I've had the exact same code and evap leak for over 2 years now. I could NEVER find the leak, but I'm sure it's the rollover valve now. Thanks so much for this video. Extremely helpful. Just dropped the tank to install a new skid plate...grrr...gonna have to drop it again. Thanks!
Question around the 13:42 mark you make mention of finding a broken plastic T evap piece, and I have to wonder if that was the source of the leak and not the rollover valve?
FYI later model TJs have the evap canister in the rear so there are more connections on the passenger side than what you show, just in case folks with a 04 try to do this, they need to be aware. Thanks for posting!
This may be the problem on mine. Im popping the 0456, 0455 codes for Gross large leak and small leak. Great Video. Only one thing I would have done differently......siphon the gas into the newer tank AFTER I had it mounted up....make it easier to lift an empty tank vs a full one. I was also looking at possibly trying to replace those rollover valves with ones from a 99-2006 dodge ran 15/25/3500 as alot of Dodge parts interchange with our TJs
@@Garagecouple Hey good video on the e vac leak. A couple of questions. First how did you make a smoke machine to test the lines . How did you find out it was the roll over value. Was it with the smoke machine. And did you drop your tank when you checked your lines with the smoke machine. Thanks your your videos
Had this issue. Did the same thing, bought a used tank. Rollover valve on that one broke as well. If you're creative, you can actually replace the rollover valves in the tank with the current ones for RAM trucks. I need to make a video on it. It's takes a bit to do it tho. I might just drop 1700 and get a Gen right tank
Don't you LOVE waiting to see if that CEL light comes on?! On my 06 Rubi Unlimited 6 speed the filler neck cracked AND the valve on the passenger side too! I did an insert on the valve and built a new neck while removing the ball and cage piece in the fill neck. Then I bought a ''Flex style'' rad hose to use as the filler hose and it lets the body flex without cracking the neck at the tank. I put a new Bosch pump in while I was in there only to have it fail and light the CEL 200 miles later?! Pulled it out and found the regulator O ring was cut when they built it so I dug one out of my ''collection'' and it has been good for a few thousand now. I NEVER want to drop the tank again!
I just bought an 01 TJ yesterday with 155k on it. Did my best to make sure it was as. Good as a 20 yr old vehicle could be. Have you done a rebuild on the engine yet? Fingers crossed that I got a good one
Out of the literal hundreds of Jeep TJ owners I know, I've never heard of this issue lol... Pro tips for those reading this: Those "rollover valves" are just fuel tank vent valves. You can remove the factory ones (or plug them off) and install generic universal ones for less than $50 a pair. Also, I'm not sure where you looked but, there's replacement fuel tanks all over the web and often found locally through 4x4 shops. Very easily obtained. I would've replaced those hard plastic lines (and any tees etc.) before resorting to a full tank swap. And you didn't let us see it actually fix the problem. No offense man but, I would've trouble shot that more before doing all that work and spending all that money. Hope you got it fixed though!
Hello ,great video, i have 1 question i have a 97 tj and coming off the gas tank i have a tee that comes from the roll over valves and a metal and rubber line that is at the front of the engine on drivers side that it appears to be on a bracket with the main fuel line ,does the metal end plug into that tee on the roll over valves or the opposite end thats just rubber??? i started a frame off restoration last june and i am now reasembling stuff, the jeep was basically a yard rig with no fenders, i know one end plugs into the evap canister on the drivers side fender just dont know if its the metal end or the rubber,ps i just got the motor installed with the trani and i watched your pinion angle video and gained some knowledge thank you so much with out people like you were or what would one do! thank you!, Mark!.
Wow, that sounds like a ton of fun! I hope you enjoy every second of the build. Im not really sure about your vehicle, I know they are different on different model years. Good luck!
my tank had a busted filler so i found a tank but it had a busted roll over valve , like you said they dont make tj gas tanks so luckily my tj is registered on the reservation so no emissions for it,so i just blocked off the valve and line .wish there was a way to remake tj gas tank it would help alot of people.
Hey Greg, I have an 01 Wrangler, standard Transmission, and the transfer case is dry throughout! I just discovered transmission fluid around the fuel tank vent hose, and it is dripping! Where could it be coming from? No check engine light! I'm stumped! Thanks!
There are no aftermarket fuel tanks with the rollover value attached? I’m shopping for a tj and I thought it had enough aftermarket support that tanks would be available...
OMG I'm dealing with trying to find and clear that same check engine code so I can get it inspected! I changed the gas cap, put in a fuel cleaner and kept driving with new gas hoping it would clear. Going through my 2nd tank of fuel now, hoping it would clear. 😂 Thanks for making this video. I never would have thought to check this.
Which years are those valves replaceable? I have an 02 with the same problem. The whole top of that valve is somehow melted! I’m having a hard time finding a replacement tank that’s not crazy expensive. Even the dealer can’t order them. But that valve is like $20. How do I know which years are replaceable without needing to find a whole tank?
Not for this model year jeep wrangler. The ones for this gas tank are non-serviceable - trust me - we searched everywhere, spoke with dealer - spoke with countless people. It doesn't exist for the 01 19 gallon tank
Great info, I just picked up a 98 Jeep TJ and cant believe how much I am falling in love with it already. I did just post a video on my channel about it if your interested in having a look.
Thank you for the information . I had no clue there is a problem with finding a vent valve for the fuel tank. Can you tell me the brand name of the OB2 Bluetooth reader? I would like to purchase one for my 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Thanks for taking the time to educate us through your videos!
Hi looking for help. I have 2000 TJ 4.0 130k miles with a Check engine light p0301. I replaced the spark plugs and coil packs with oem ones. I believe the fuel pump regulator is going bad because it takes a few try’s to start but after it does it runs perfectly fine. Could this be the reason I have a code? Thank you 🙏🏼
in Australia its not an issue at all , never reported as a problem to the dealer network by a customer , must be cold weather related , after market no one has come across this problem either that i know off after 30 years in parts and service
Jeep's are made for after market mods, meaning a new after market tank almost same size with after market roll over valve if it did not come with one ,,,or outside roll of over valve,,,, custom made fittings,,
They are cross corner from each other. And the sensor leads are in opposite cross corner. Using the female blade connectors crimped to the 10 gauge wire and then attach to the pins And use the jumper cables to get power from the battery to the pigtails attach to the proper polarity. I’ve never dropped a tank with more than a 1/4 tank of fuel. Because I’ve always transferred my fuel to another receptacle The plug has nothing to do with simply supplying power. Even a drill battery will work
Mine comes on and goes off as well, have also been told it’s the O2 censor. Mine also won’t hardly take gas and will sputter when climbing in RPMs everyone and then while making a knocking noise from the gas tank area. Have not replaced censor yet
Autozone will read your codes and reset your check engine light for free, or lend you an OBD reader for free. $10 isn't a big investment to have your own, but it's not necessary.
Garage Couple watches video second time around that is a super bummer they dont make tanks no more, wonder if you can buy an aftermarket replacement or a plug and play fuel cell ?
Garage Couple did you ever think of putting your own brass valve into the tank, sandwiched with washers & rubber gasket like drill out the plastic fitting reach into the tank put a 90 degree air fitting that will attach to the rubber return hose but seal the hole with large washers and rubber gasket very similar design on steel wheels and the metal valve stem air fittings
Yeah, I did think about it. It seemed like a lot of work and there were no guarantees that it would work. These systems detect tiny little leaks and to be honest I didn't want to see the check engine light on anymore so I replaced it with this tank.
