  • Batman Forever was released in 1995 , who would have thought all this time later in 2022 that we could possibly see some new developments?
Many scenes were left on the cutting room floor---- taking out plot points, plots, and character screen time.
It just so happens that there might be an extended cut on the way on HBO Max.

It’s those deleted scenes we have been shown that really shows that Joel Schumacher could have made a more mature Batman film then what was in the final film. A lot of the elements you see at play in the deleted scenes are some stuff we saw in his other film that made him a good candidate to be a Batman director with The Lost Boys.

I've seen some of those deleted scenes, and I was very impressed. Even without a musical score - which I presume, or at least hope, was written - the scene of Bruce's "vision quest" in the cave, where he finds his father's diary and encounters the giant bat that inspired him to become Batman, is one of the most powerful I have seen in a superhero film.

One interesting thing from the original script featured Bruce mentioning to Alfred that that he killed Jack Napier and ever since his parents died, he became violent and mad to the world, and even after he killed him, he felt it wasn't enough to venge his parents and admits he regrets killing him because he is stuck in a dark place he could never forgive himself. And later on when Batman tries to find Riddler, he runs into a hall of mirror as Riddler voice comes out of speakers about how he is a killer like him and Harvey, "just try to ask these guys" with the mirrors showing Joker, Penguin and Catwoman in each mirror to make him feel guilty and make him loose his grip.

After watching your videos on it, I recently rewatched Batman Forever and... it was better than I remembered it. I cringed at some of it (the villains, the "anatomically erotic" costumes, etc) but the character stuff with Bruce was legitimately good and having more of it would make the film even better. It's a shame Schumacher never got to see his version of the movie appreciated by the general audience, but it's never too late to make that version available to said audience. And overall, I feel like Schumacher may be one of the most underappreciated flmmakers of the 90s, remembered for Batman and Robin when he should be remembered for the masterpiece that is Falling Down.

Forever was always my favorite of the Burton and Schumacher movies. It’s the only one of the four that’s actually about Bruce and gives him a character arc. Joel made some good movies in his time, so I’m glad that over the years it’s been shown that there was fair amount of good stuff there that just was unfortunately buried.

"Batman: Unchained" has been a legend since the late 90's, for me anyway.
Schumacher's original vision and film would've been fucking AWESOME!
And this whole thing is proof positive that WB/DC has been fucking with Batman directors since AT LEAST the mid 90's, because they want to reach that all important "little kid" demographic... which has historically made WB/DC no money.
Marvel has the kiddie market cornered, unfortunately.
Their cookie cutter, saccharine safe kid flicks are just too powerful a juggernaut to be competed with... SO PLEASE, WB... PLEASE DC... STOP TRYING!
Do your own thing... your characters are mature, dealing with mature subject matter, and they always have been. Even the DCAU dealt with subject matter FAR more mature than the *supposed* audience they were going for... and THAT has arguably been their biggest success.

Except Warner's real problem isn't just worrying about merchandise. It's being extreme in reaction. Forever and more B&R was them going over reaction mode after Returns pissed off the proto-Karens and McDonald's. Nolan and later Reeves is Warner being once more overreacting as a result of B&R.
The only time Warner were hands off was the Chris Reeve Superman movies where all they could do is simply allow the production company do their thing and sign off on what they approve of. It's all about balance....and also respecting the source material; something the studio hasn't been doing well on even more so the last 9 years

@@SuperWolsey That's primarily because, when SUPERMAN came out in 1978, big-budget movie promotions by fast-food restaurants were still about a decade away; even McDonald's Happy Meals didn't exist yet. When Taco Bell promoted Tim Burton's BATMAN in the summer of '89, it not only put them on the map but accelerated a marketing trend that, while it had already started, hadn't quite taken off yet.
As much as I love BATMAN RETURNS, however, I think Warners made the right decision - fiscally, if not necessarily creatively. BATMAN FOREVER was very popular at the time and succeeded at the box office more than RETURNS did.

    • @SeasideDetective2
      @SeasideDetective2 2 года назад +3

I'm hoping BATMAN: UNCHAINED can still be made some day, perhaps as an animated film so that, even in his seventies, Michael Keaton can reprise the role. Heck, I say, why not remake the entire series as animated films? Disney has been doing live-action remakes, but I think they've gone in the wrong direction.
Tim Burton's BATMAN is a terrific movie, but I think its characterization of the Joker was flawed. And BATMAN RETURNS had a very intriguing plot, but proceeded to waste it. Channel Awesome's "FanScription" crafted an alternate version of BATMAN RETURNS that features Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, and I think it is much better than what we got. And I can think of so much more that could be done!

This movie and The Crow: City of Angels have a lot in common when it comes to having a ton of pivotal footage being removed (both their respective soundtracks even had PJ Harvey songs attached). I'd say that the Batman Forever cut we currently have turned out much better than The Crow: City of Angels cuts we currently have (the Miramax/Dimension Pictures distributed a version they referred to as a "director's cut", which the director, Tim Pope, had absolutely nothing to do with). It's a shame what the Weinsteins did to City of Angels and I hope we get to see Tim Pope's true vision someday (as the script, written by David S. Goyer, may be the best he's ever written for a comic movie). Hopefully these mid-90s movies can get their due someday. If you couldn't tell, Vee, I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Crow: City of Angels, as it's quite the rabbit-hole to venture down (the IMDb deleted scenes page may be the longest I've ever seen for a movie).

Batman Forever is a classic. I love this movie. Val Kilmer was a perfect Batman/Bruce Wayne. Nicole Kidman was stunning, she’s leaps and bounds better than most female co-stars nowadays. Alfred was perfect. Seeing my Hero Jim Carrey as a Riddler was phenomenal. Especially, letting him he Jim Carrey. I feel like now he would feel the need to “gO DaRkEr” for social stimulation of his commitment to the project. Seeing Tommy Lee Jones having fun playing a character straight from the comics/animated series was so fucking cool. Growing into loving Chris O’Donnell as Robin for saving Batman from his demise in those tons of sand after escaping the fire was soo cool.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heya Julian. Thank you for sending me this video. I watched some of his other videos, to get a perspective of where he stands within the DCEU (Comic and Movie-wise) and I have to say he is very critical. I either agree 100% or 0% due to his aggressiveness. Putting that aside, I had seen the interview a while back when Joel was alive, and thought nothing of it (that being the mention of a director's cut.) After looking at this video and some of Screen Rant's information on these deleted scenes, I believe the DC cut should be released. The beginning shot of Harvey breaking out of Arkham already sets a darker tone for the movie, despite how campy it is. I also read that Nygma was supposed to go through somewhat of a “training phase” like Cory Smith’s Riddler in Gotham. Wanting to be more like Bruce Wayne while also despising him. Fighting these two inner demons would also give him more connection with Two-Face. Just like Vee said “They’re the same currency, just two different sides of the coin”. The ending was also supposed to be completely different, adding on to the fact that B&R wasn’t supposed to be a cash grab. Last thing I want to mention was how Bruce had a need for responsibility for Dick because HE caused his parents death. Where Vee is wrong however, is Batman killing Penguin. These are different universes, Burton’s and Schumacher’s.
Thank you for sending me this video and the recommendation for Batman B&W. Enjoy your weekend break and we’ll watch the Batman when we come back 😉

    • @Reivanhist
      @Reivanhist 2 года назад +2

@@Reddison He is just wrong about other universes. Schumacher did exactly the third film, and the fact that this sequel just plays a big role in the director's version. He works with the fact that this Batman killed villains. Gotham remembers it, Bruce himself remembers it. This is literally the beginning of his arc in this film. Bruce wants to be better, to protect Dick from these mistakes, but he is constantly reminded of them.

Having watched a lot of the deleted scenes, I do think Forever was a missed opportunity for Warner Bros. It could have been the great third act in the Batman series. Val Kilmer was a great choice to play the Dark Knight. I especially love the scene where he’s in the cave where he fell, and the red book is turned to Thomas Wayne’s last entry, saying that Bruce’s mother had her heart set on the particular theatre show that eventually got them killed, so the show that Bruce wanted to watch would have to wait. Bruce gets some tearful closure in that moment, as he realizes his parents’ death was not his fault. Suddenly, the giant bat appears, and Bruce, standing face to face with it, is rejuvenated enough to rise, as Bruce Wayne AND Batman. Though not because he has to be, but now…because he chooses to be. #becauseimbatman

He tried to reveal his identity, but in vain. He fought off the thugs in a tux, which could have exposed him to the masses.
THE BEST PART- Lastly he grabbed a machine gun from a thug, and was willing to kill twoface before 2face shot the wires. Unfortunately the flashback played in his head, and he was distracted moments before he was seriously going to pull the trigger and violate his code. A thug knocks him down. Val Kilmer was always my favorite Batman and now seeing this it almost pisses me off to see how potentially amazing this movie could have been. Overall, I still like this movie. The only thing I absolutely HATE is the Two Face character. Tommy Lee Jones is a fantastic actor, but he played it way over the top to where it's almost cringe worthy. Jim Carrey was over the top, but it worked because that's just what he does and he plays that intelligent comedic psychopath perfectly. If they would have taken Two Face out and killed the Grayson's in some other way and added more of this psychological element as you mentioned this movie could have been truly great.
Btw, I may be a little slow on the uptake, but I just realized that all the Batman movies are simply about mental health issues and how every case is different. Batman, Robin, and all the villains seem to deal with some certain mental illness or condition (think about it 🤔) I guess that's why Arkham Asylum is so prominent in Gotham. 😅

It's funny you made this video when you did. Literally just yesterday I was thinking, what if WB made Batman Forever better.
Although I was thinking almost remake the entire movie, keep the Val Kilmer Batman/Bruce Wayne stuff and Robin stuff. Then use green screen or something to replace Tommy Lee Jones' Two Face and Jim Carey's Riddler with better acted versions, maybe de-age Billy Dee Williams and get him back in the role.
This practice happened in some recent movies where an actor would quit or get fired and they just green screened over them with a new actor in the role. Perfect, just do it for Batman Forever.

  • @MrFirebird467

For those curious, there's a fan cut called "Red Book Edition", from the deleted scenes involving a book Bruce reads in said scenes. It's the most well-known fan-cut of Batman Forever to my knowledge, and it's easily found with a google search.
Personally, having seen both cuts, I do think that the fan edit is better structurally. The original film is a good balance imo of B&R's pure camp, and Tim Burton's character-driven story-telling, but you can feel some of that cut content if you watch both. I would definitely love to see a restored "Schumacher Edition", mostly just to put that footage out in HD. It's still not a great movie, but there was clearly an attempt by Joel to merge his style with Burton's in those missing scenes, something he seemed to abandon by B&R.

In 2020, after Schumaher passed away, Warner openly stated they would like to release his cut of the movie, but they lost all the footage in those 25 years since the release of the theatrical cut.
It is a shame, Joel is not around anymore, and Val is going through some hard health issues, and a new cut that could redeem this movie (which I think even in its theatrical cut is still pretty good) just cant be made.
Also, we should stop pretending Returns was "dark and mature"...it was goofy and pretty dumb, some blood and a woman in tight leather dont make a movie "dark and mature".

Batman Forever is not the best, but it's not bad either. I put in the same category of Green Lantern, Suicide Squad 2016, Justice League 2017 and Birds of Prey movies. There are good elements, but missed opportunities. In the case of Batman Forever, one good element is that it was truly the first Batman movie to delve into Bruce's mind. Not saying that Batman and Batman Returns hasn't Bruce facing struggles, but both movies are more focused on its villains, while in Forever there is a focus on Bruce. And when I watched the deleted scenes, while it wouldn't make the movie the best, it would've improved a lot.

Look, I don’t love BvS or anything, but that Martha thing gets way too much hate, and actually makes perfect sense. Batman doesn’t see Superman as a person, only a threat. Superman does know about Batman’s family, and a convenient coincidence. In that moment, Clark was gonna die, and he uses the only thing he has left, an appeal to Bruce’s humanity, one that would resonate loudly in Bruce’s mind. It humanized him, and Bruce was finally willing to listen. Is it like the epic, come to jesus moment they want it to be? No, but it makes sense.

Should Batman feel all that much guilt about killing? Not TOO much, I'd declare. Yes, he did blow up an entire chemical factory full of henchmen and place a rapidly ticking bomb on another crook, but the rest? Not all that heinous, in my opinion. For starters, I would NEVER apologize for killing the Joker. The way I see it, Jack Napier was not human, but the equivalent of a man-eating tiger that had to be shot so everyone else in the jungle village would be safe. And how is Batman directly to blame for what happened to the Penguin? He couldn't have known for sure that Oswald would panic and crash backward through that window.

I really don’t like the cave scene where he comes out and say’s “I’m Batman” so confidently after facing the bat. It feels so false after his depressive uncertainty about who he is. Whilst a Schumacher cut would be great to see I can see why they aren’t releasing. The answer being because there’s not a lot of new content added to it. Making the theory that Schumacher cut is so much darker and better actually good marketing for the main film itself. Also I personally wouldn’t like to explore Bruce Wayne’s past more. The series centres around Batman, meaning development and origins can be done for any of the films. Why do it in the third instalment of a franchise? I personally like this film in a guilty way. It’s not grounded it’s slapstick. It’s comedic but I can get behind that. I don’t watch the Schumacher films the same way I watch the Nolan films. The villains are the centre piece of the story because the story itself is comedic. Bruce Wayne can’t be comedic. He’s lived a traumatic life and still retains his morals to become brooding. Whether you take someone like the riddler. He’s a psycho. That hyped up comedic energy makes jim Carey so enjoyable to watch but also in some scene unpredictably creepy. I still find it funny that Tommy lee jones and Jim Carey didn’t like each other despite the fact that their duo and constant bouncing back is my favourite part of the film. So a Schumacher cut yeah would be good if it was released but I wouldn’t want a darker Batman forever. I love for the film for it’s comedy
