Black2/White 2 makes sense because they're literally continuations of the story from Black/White. Other third games usually took place a long time after the original games and had a different story.

I really wouldn't say that, especially with gen V specifically. It's not that the story is nonexistant, it just takes a backseat to the gameplay and worldbuilding in general. Black and White (and to a lesser extent, B/W 2) put a lot more emphasis on story.
