Is a plexi a jtm45 or is it a general term for Marshall 60s amps? I’ve been looking for an amp to upgrade and I think a Marshall is what I’m looking for
@@Hillelfan02 When people talk about late 60s Marshall "Plexi" they are referring to the Marshall 100w Super Lead. There is also a very rare 50w version of the Super Lead called the JTM50 or "Black Flag Plexi" that looks exactly like a late JTM45. It looks like the JTM50 is what James is playing in the video. So yeeeaaahh... if you are ever lucky enough to find a '66 Black Flag Plexi in good playable condition, expect to pay anywhere between US$7000 - 10000. Oh and 1966 Fuzz Faces with the Red Dot NKTs start from $2000 and then up (and there's no guarantee it will even be a "good" one or that the resistors haven't mis-biased over the years)
Cool! Thanks for this James Santiago. I'll add that I only realized, when watching Jimi in footage from Fillmore/Band of Gypsies/Machine Gun, how close to the bridge he would tend to pick when on the neck pickup selection, and I find that really can help for avoiding the tubby square wave sound that can result with neck pickups and fuzz, including the fuzz face.
This is an amazing video every Fuzz Face neophyte should watch. To the point, precise, great tone… As for most of us mortals not having a cranked Plexi at our disposal: putting an OD in breakup mode downstream of the fuzz, and into a clean amp, seems to do the trick nicely enough.
I really like your approach. It gave me a working knowledge how these devices sound in the real world. I wasn't going to watch the whole presentation but got pulled in.
I’ve always avoided the strat and the fuzz thing, but I’m starting to build some confidence on my strat type guitar and my first FF is on the way, thanks for the tips. You have a great touch, and obviously know your sht thx 🙏 🤠✌️
Dude your tone is great very nice sounding sound. congrats. Over time most guitarists figure out that its about the minimal. 1 pedal and good control of the guitar strings and tone / volume knobs.
I have the MRX classic 108 mini. It's basically the same circuit as that light blue, silicon Hendrix fuzz face with a buffer button to make it play nice with other pedals or humbuckers...especially wah pedals or anything in front of it. The button also brightens the tone a bit, but for turning down the fuzz quite a bit, it reintroduces the highs, which is good for getting mellower overdrive tones from it. I'll probably eventually buy the the darker blue silicon fuzz face mini. That one will give you the Pink Floyd - Time solo sound. Dunlop owns MXR ,Way Huge Pedals, and the official Fuzz Face branding , so, yeah...
Really nice James! I heard Eric and Jimi clearly in your tone and playing. Outstanding demo! I wish you were in Houston so I could hear you play live. Now I've gotta find those pedals! Cheers - Luther
My 66 arbiter wont actually start to work until the room is below 80 degrees. Above that it barely makes sound. I usually put an ice pack under it and wait for it to reach the sweet spot which I find is around 65 degrees F.
James, I always enjoyed your videos for Voodoo Lab so it was a pleasant surprise to find your channel just now. One request: make more videos! :-) I love your tone and style.
This is how you should show a vintage fuzz and teach how to use it. Indeed tightrope is 80% Fuzz face (germanium) and a tiny bit of the Roger Mayer Octavia (grey rocket shape), im not sure if SRV had the TS9 ON but the sound in the solo's is the sickest and most brutal I've ever heard, and this guys is completely right you see Stevie rolling down the volume to sing and clean the guitar, when the solo comes he cranks the guitar volume and hell is loose. It's such and Epic performance. By the way with that FF pedal you dont need much more to make stand on the stage it sounds amazing.
Coming back to your channel, I seem to remember there being more videos than there are now? Am I misremembering or have you removed some of your videos? Atb - Luther 😎👍
Strangely so much few comments out there?! Great demo with so awesome gear! I envy you .. But the headroom volume for that amp are too hi for my ( and much people's) house..
James - I just bought the Fuzz Face JHF1 ( new old stock Dunlop circa 2015 model ) It has more mid scoop than I imagined. Fender American Pro 1 Strat at all full , btw i ran it through my Vox AC4T1 and my Orange TH30C both clean and dirty. Is it expected at low volume setting on the pedal ???
That 66 G fuzz is spectacular....I had an old red one that got stolen many years ago and been trying to get that tone again....What do you think of the Dustin Ivor FF clones that are out now ?
I am trying to get the hugest Hendrix-Stevie Ray tone possible.. not necessarily most distorted, just the hugest tone all the way..Would it be more in the amp, speakers, guitar, pickups, or pedals? Some even say the pots on the guitars matters a lot.. I got an American Strat, '66 Bassman, '70 Twin reverb, both have JBL D120 F speakers, Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Chorus, Delay, Phase 90, Harmonist.. I dont have an Octave pedal or univibe yet.. I am mostly talking about getting the huge basic tone, with or without any extra pedals..I mean would the pickups matter a lot, I got stock Fenders in it now..I heard maybe Lollars or Fender '69 were good.. what do you say? What would make the most difference?
hi James excellent tone it is possible to make a fuzz face sound like this or similar in a fender hot rod deville 212, which settings should you use, thanks for your knowledge greetings from Argentina
How is it not absolutely screeching next to you at that volume? I tried diming everything on my plexi and it's unplayable. Using a different speaker than the 4x12 by you?
Never understood why people don't like single coils. They just work with fuzz instead distortion. It's a different sound but equally punchy and roary. A good late 60/70 strat with big headstock and rosewood fretboard, a Plexi and a fuzz face. A 58/59 Le Paul and a Fender Tweed/M Bluesbreaker. I mean, I know there's really a lot mooore than that but those sounds are the holy grails. They're different but not that much, you can get a punchy treble tone and a woman tone with both of them, then for the clean side, working with you're volume and p.u combinations you've got a lot of sounds from both of them.
I read the Guitar Player pedalboard issue back in the day, and it was interesting to read about how different guitarists used pedals for unique sounds. Do you have other companion videos for that article? Thanks!
I have a question and I really need some help with this. My question is... is it enough to have a buffer pedal or two (my boss reverb and tremolo) at the end of my chain to prevent any clarity loss even if there are other pedals in front of the buffer chain? In this case does the boss buffer work even if there are other pedals enabled in front of the boss pedals, or does it only boost the signal for the pedal that is enabled and everything in front of it does not get a buffer? I really have issues to run a boss pedal at the beginning of my chain because it completely messes up my fuzz pedal and distortion pedal because of the impedance and buffer function. I would like to have a buffer pedal at the beginning of my pedal board but is it necessary to have a buffer pedal at the start even if you have a buffer pedal at the end? thanks for any help!
Are you plugging your pedals directly into the amp like a send and return jack? Or do you have it like amp to pedals to guitar? My fuzz makes and incredible hissing noise and doesn't sound like yours and i have the blue hendrix signature one that you have.
I bought a 73 fender stratocaster in the pawn shop for $190 ! A steal deal ! It pays to hunt pawn shoos for all your gear ! Many folks will sell their guitar pedal's, amps, etc. For cheap because they are Hard up for Money$$$$$ don't forget to go to your local pawn real soon ! Mike Edwards Crowley, Louisiana.
"I've got a '66 Plexi up there"
..is something I will never say.
lol ! I feel you bro
If you say you can or you can't... You're right...
Got a 66 Plexi up there and we're gonna use thel 66 germanium fuzz face

This guy has ancient and deep knowledge. I mean that.
How in the world can 20 people dislike this video? This is literally the "handbook" on how to use a vintage fuzz CORRECTLY.
They jealous of his playing
Wow this sounds so much better than every other fuzz tutorial on youtube. How do you only have 64k views?
has to do a lot with your amazing playing, but this is by far the closest ive heard anyone come to sounding like hendrix. spot on.
Him & Randy Hansen, whose live shows and Hendrix tones, are something to 'experience'!
What a fantastic demo! Great sounds, clearly knowledgable, and great playing.
Cool! Thanks for this James Santiago.

That's one hell of a good video James. Thanks for taking the time to do this

exactly!

Man! Amazing tone, knowledge, and playing!
Just beautifuly played!
Amazingly beautiful tone.
Really awesome sounds! Thanks for sharing!
One of the closest hendrix sounding demos I heard by the way... Cheers!
It sounds wonderful very vintage, you can play that strat too, univibe would of Hendrix later sound but it sounds outstanding.
I’ve always avoided the strat and the fuzz thing, but I’m starting to build some confidence on my strat type guitar and my first FF is on the way, thanks for the tips. You have a great touch, and obviously know your sht thx 🙏 🤠✌️
Masterclass and wonderful playing!
Dude your tone is great very nice sounding sound. congrats. Over time most guitarists figure out that its about the minimal. 1 pedal and good control of the guitar strings and tone / volume knobs.
kay834 Experience makes you wise. Just make it simple.
Great playing, great tone and great info. The Arbiter sounds wonderful.
Nice tone and very nice phrasing by the way!
More videos, please. Thank you, James.
thank you! just fixed my pedal placement. makes tons of sense.
It all sounded good, even at ten.
This was a really cool video and solid tips.

Awesome James, have not seen you in so long !! Miss the Tracy days man !!
Outstanding presentation
Great Video! Also great Playing!
Eric Johnson violin fuzz sound is exactly a tube screamer in a fuzz face so.. TS low gain level volume high and the fuzz 12 o’clock fuzz knob.
Really nice James! I heard Eric and Jimi clearly in your tone and playing. Outstanding demo! I wish you were in Houston so I could hear you play live. Now I've gotta find those pedals! Cheers - Luther

Those fuzzes are on point! So is your playing man
James, I always enjoyed your videos for Voodoo Lab so it was a pleasant surprise to find your channel just now. One request: make more videos! :-) I love your tone and style.
+ForViewingOnly what he said. :)

Really helpful! Great review dude.
I have a Dallas-Arbiter England FuzzFace. Just replaced the electrolytic capactors and it sounds like new.
very informative. thanks for posting the video.
Those are some sweet tones!!
Thank you so much. For the info, for the playing.
Nice video. Thank you. Short and to the point. Welath of info here.
The must unassuming guy is the one who unlocks the heavens for us
I love Hendrix and can't find tons of video explain how is hendrix doing to doing his magic
James now you have a great setup with the marshalls, fender hey your road ready...jam on..
This is a damn fine video. Thank you!
I had JUST gotten content with my fuzz sound since getting a Hendrix fuzz face and then he hits one note with that Arbiter and I'm back into my G.A.S.
And now for people who don't have an expensive amp at their disposal...
Put a good overdrive (low gain) behind your Fuzz Face. Sounds killer.
Great demo and killer tone. Thanks
Very informative video! 👍
Lovely playing mate !
What matters is the AMP, not the pedal (it does a little though....)
Sounds stunningly awesome
I never comment but...This Dude is A Fuzz Wizard!! Knowledge 🤘🎸
James is thee professor of tone!
that is the tone. *the* tone.
That Paul on the wall looks exactly like my old 74 Standard.
Brilliant. Thanks for the info!
Excellent lesson! Thank you!
thank you so much, love it!
We need a lesson on Uni Vibe ... Trower / Hendrix
Sweet sound, nice guitar too!
Really enjoyed this. 👍
I am not so much into fuzz sound (too dirty for me), but your playing is just.... beautiful! Also, beautiful vibrato!
Peja pussy
Coming back to your channel, I seem to remember there being more videos than there are now? Am I misremembering or have you removed some of your videos?
Atb - Luther 😎👍
Awesome info!
Every time I watch one of these videos I want a fuzz pedal. Maybe after Christmas. Have my eye on the Ram's Head.
Great tip ! Thanks !
Late to the party ... great video
No wonder why the voodoo labs stuff is always spot on 🎸✌️
The old germanium sounds awesome
I'm looking for These Hendrix Sounds, but can't afford all this Hardware. Whats the easiest way to get it, even If its virtually generated ?
Thanks !
Strangely so much few comments out there?! Great demo with so awesome gear! I envy you .. But the headroom volume for that amp are too hi for my ( and much people's) house..
Best tone
What transistors are in the blue Fuzz Face. I’m not sure there is such a thing as too much Fuzz.
What if you cleaned up the fuzz, but then boosted using a ts9
Nice playing.....sweet tone.
Is it expected at low volume setting on the pedal ???
great demo - thanks
excellent! just got one. really helpful
That 66 G fuzz is spectacular....I had an old red one that got stolen many years ago and been trying to get that tone again....What do you think of the Dustin Ivor FF clones that are out now ?
over priced drek...
That's an excellent demo.

How about a vid on that Fender amp and your setup
Thank you very much! Very nice video!
Thanks for posting this video. How about a wah (vox/dunlop) in front of the fuzz? Does it react the same as the bypass in the Tube Screamer?
sweet Hendrix licks brah!!
The vintage one sounds better. The modern blue one is the best value and probably good enough. Thanks for showcasing.
What a set up this guy has
Which of the mini would get me the closest little wing sound ? thank you
Ouh! Great sound man! 👌
Sir, you have a real Fuzz Face pedal made by Dallas Arbiter
from England, correct?

Today we are talking about hendrix and fuzzes through a marshall... Thats how you start a lesson
He's got more chops then a butcher shop. 👍🏻🎸🇺🇸

Hey James, can you tell me how Jimi got all those different sounds on All Along the Watchtower?
Is a germanium one better? They got a small red germanium Fuzz Face now that fits on pedal boards better.. what do you think of that one?
Are you plugging your pedals directly into the amp like a send and return jack? Or do you have it like amp to pedals to guitar? My fuzz makes and incredible hissing noise and doesn't sound like yours and i have the blue hendrix signature one that you have.
Dude is such a nonchalant awesome player...
