Rus, I just made these the other night on my SNS plancha. WOW! I couldn’t believe the flavor, easily our favorite burgers I’ve done, and they are stupid simple to make.
Jill, this burger is right up your alley for sure! I hope you do a video on this if you haven't already! Please let me know. The history is so interesting to me! I love all of these historical burger, recipes, etc. and knowing the stories make them that much better!
Hey Russ.. I’m on the Arkansas/Oklahoma line.. I go to OKC quite often to visit our son and his fam… the Oklahoma onion burger is by far my favorite burger.. I make them all the time! Thanks for making me hungry!
Thanks Russ - This is also my go-to burger. - I often do 2 x 3.5 oz patties per burger for those with a bigger appetite. Simple, easy to make (and fast!) and Soooo tasty! - Cheers!
Your welcome! Yes sir, after one bite of these years ago I was hooked. Absolutely my favorite way to cook and eat a burger. Thanks for checking the video out!
Yes, I did it. Couldn't find the Mandolin. I did the next best thing. I bought a new one!!! Passed an onion through it 4-5 times and thought is this thing even cutting? Lifted the mandolin and there sits a small pile of shredded onions. Cut - ZERO resistance. Amazingly sharp. Formed a ball of meat, lightly pressed into a patty, seasoned both sides. Put it in a Cast Iron Skillet that was being heated up. Put on a pile of the shredded onions and pressed more. Cooked a few minutes and flipped. Cooked more and being left handed, I broiled the bun to toast it. Added cheese, covered and once melted took it off and put it on a toasted bun. Added pickles, mustard crowned it with the toasted bun top. Delicious burger. I think the cast iron skillet was key to helping make this a delicious burger. I don't like the weight of cast iron. But I do like the results!!!!
This looks soooo good. I’d much rather have that one vs those real super thick burgers piled ten inches high. This is simple and very tasty. Thank ya Rus! Love your channel.
Hi ! I don't know English well, but I've been watching your releases for 4 years now. You are a cool person and a cook! When the war is over, I will definitely visit your state
Hey Rus the relationship to this burger and White Castle makes sense. I grew up on White Castles so I'm pretty sure I'd be smashing 5 of these right there with you!! Great tip warming the spatula too! Have a great week Bud!!
Best one I’ve ever had is at Little Mikes in Oklahoma City. Couple of places in Enid used to be really good until they got on food channel. Now just tourist traps. Little Mikes throws on onions. Little later reaches in cold drawer and pulls out big honking meatball. Slams it on onions and mashes little more with well seasoned spatula. Touch of salt/pepper. Maybe some else but I’ve never seen anything. If you ordered fries big potato is run through press and immediately into fryer. They plate it up and have bar where you make it your own. 4-5 types mustard. Mayo, Miracle Whip, ketchup. Lettuces. Pickles, jalapeños, tomatoes etc. So good. Very reasonable prices.
Would love to check it out someday! I know there are many places in Oklahoma that does these, and I'm sure they all have different twist to them. I like how you said he throws the meatball on top of the onions. I've never seen that before, and that really reminds me of the White Castle method, but probably way better. Thanks for checking the video out!
When I made the Oklahoma Onion Burger for the first time a few months ago I was super impressed at how it tasted with so little on it. One of my favorite burgers by far.

Food history is fascinating. I think what was made out of necessity, all those years ago, such as in the Great Depression, during the 1930s, can be a culinary treasure, in North America, as well as in other parts of the world. Due to economic circumstances, these days, many people need to make their money go further, and that type of burger would definitely do it. More onions is never a bad thing, in my opinion. That burger looks great. Cheers, Russ! ✌️
I'm not exactly sure why these Oklahoma onion burgers have suddenly shown up everywhere. They are an Oklahoma tradition that's been around for a long time. But FYI, they sounded so tasty that I had to try my own "veganized" version. I've made them with store-bought vegan mushroom & quinoa burgers (cheap) as well as more traditional tasting plain vegan burgers using a little olive oil for frying. I put a lid on to fully steam the buns (best way) and melt the vegan cheese slices (Violife is the GOAT) in the last minute. And both versions were delicious AF! And the best thing of all: no animal had to live in misery or be slaughtered for my pleasure!
