Draw eyes on your drones, I used a magic marker and drew a set of eyes on the front and back of my drones. It sounds silly , but most birds have excellent vision. Since I put the eyes on them I’ve had zero bird encounters. Another good tip is if any bird starts being aggressive toward your drone, come to a stop and as soon as forward movement has stopped hit the throttle and go straight up. This is something no bird can do and when they see the drone doing it does make them stop chasing and diving at your drone. I have not had to use the vertical flight method since I put the eyes on my drones. Barn swallows are as bad as gulls when your near their barn, the eyes even worked on them.

I'm glad to know that it works better too. I never noticed the blue/green dot before. I will try that next time I fly too. Thanks!
I really wish that DJI would offer different Hi-Vis color options for their drones. I have been considering wrapping my Mini 4 in reflective tape just to be able to see it better in the sky. A grey drone in a grey sky you can lose sight of the small drone pretty quick.
Great video as always. I can't remember where I saw it, but cruise control is great for steady footage. Especially if you want a video of you coming and going through the scene. I've set the C1 button for cruise control and you can just point it in the direction you want it to fly, get it going and hit the C1 button. That way you can keep your hands at your side and it will look a little more natural as your moving though the scene.

Another great tip for birds being aggressive with the drone is to fly straight up as soon as they are starting to be a pest. 1. Birds can't fly up as fast as the drone. 2. Usually predators to birds come from above so they see it above them and get scared away
These are great! I only have the Mini and Mavic 3 Pros, but some of these tips are universal. I fly near the lake 90% of the time, so gulls are a huge issue for me. Ordering some tape now!

An even easier way to grade D-Log-M video is to apply a LUT. DJI provides a free, downloadable LUT file that AUTOMATICALLY converts the Log file to Rec709 WITHOUT using your contrast and saturation sliders. Once you've applied the LUT, you can use your sliders to fine-tune your contrast and saturation to taste. Most decent video editing software supports LUTs, and they're simply MUCH easier than trying to grade with your contrast and saturation sliders manually.
Ordered my mini 4 and ordered a sd for the controller and one for the drone. I guess if something happened, I’d pull the card from the controller and plug it into drone.
On the mini 2 have the similar guide to locate the drone and guide it to home point by clicking the attitude box on the bottom left side and change it to the maps and it will show the position of the drone and there's a line attached to the home point and drone and the only thing is to point the drone towards the "H" and push forward and follow the line - is the fastest direct way back to "H"
Wtih regards to the tape there are two possible issues from what I've noticed: - reflective tapes are metallic, so it can make the signal reception a bit funky (less so if only applied to the body of Mini4) - Mini 4 is really pushing the 249g weight barrier, so adding anything to it can take it over the legal limit and potentially cause trouble
Interesting things to consider! I also wonder about if placed in the wrong spots, if reflections could interfere with your camera lense/footage. I always wonder about this with the lights people put on as well. Anyone have any input/guidance on these by chance? TIA!
I had ordered flamboyant skins before because of the bird threat and it was very expensive. Visibility for me has also been an issue too, so I used yellow tape for rear aspect marking. The reflective tape is an all around great idea and I just order it......thanks for the tips. Great video!
Great video. You can also quick transfer your photos/videos over WiFi through the DJI fly app straight to your device, useful if you want to show off your footage in a hurry before editing.
Great concise patter as ever. Can you try to include what features you explain on the 4, that the mini3 pro also has? We're feeling a bit forgotten out here
Wow, you just saved me with the subject tracking. I got into drones because I have a cat, that loves to climb trees, and he wears an Insta360 go 3. So I wanted a 3rd person vuew to switch to in editing. But it wouldn't track him for long. I think this will work. If You want to have some fun then start flying around inside the canopy of trees with obstacle avoidance off 😂 it holds your skills really fast!
Well thank you Russ. Kind of you to explore these drones and their capabilities. I don’t have the 4 yet, but I’ll return here and get up to speed a lot faster no doubt. Time is money, so thanks for the donation (smile).
So glad I found you and your video. I'll be looking at/for more. I am veery much a novice and just got a Mini 4 Pro. This video was perfect!! Thank you
I tried the direct file transfer on a whim before even watching this video. Sooo much simpler than my old Mavic 2! I had files on the internal memory and was getting ready to use the smart controller to transfer the files. What a relief to find out that wasn't necessary. Not having to power up the drone is even better. I'm really digging the Mini Pro 4. Thankfully, the transition from Mavic 2 was easy. The little guy stays in the air so long ya have to keep thinking of what to do next!
Thanks! This was too good. I fly the Mavic 3 Pro but got the M4P six. months ago. First time using it for travel and the two tips regarding file download and proper direction of controller were gold. I have always had to unfold the drone and remove gimbal covers to turn on the drone just to download files. I am not sure if the M3P does this but will check. As for now that tip alone will save me countless hours when downloading footage via USB-C.
I just added a mini 4K to my fleet and just connected it to the computer to see if I could download footage directly from it after seeing your tip. It works even with this budget drone... Nice!
Speaking of gear, I got my Symik case recently and love it! My goal is to modify it slightly by standing up the charging hub (removing some lower foam) and installing a weather proof USB-C connector so I can charge my batteries without having to remove them. Other than that, love the case!
Hi Russ, Your first comment re subject tracking is great. I might check that out on my Air 2 to see if that too (three 2's = six! :) ) behaves this way. 🙃🤠
Great tips! Here is an add-on to your direct file transfer tip. I just connected my Mini 4 Pro to my Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra via USB-C cable and was able to transfer photos and videos directly! In addition to direct laptop transfer I'm going to keep this in my back pocket.
Thanks for the tips Russ, they are all very good! I never knew about the homepoint turning green that is awesome! I often get confused regarding the logs? A while back I watched another video that claims HLG is best?
That 10 bit depth is more like a raw file format with more dynamic range for better post processing... thanks for that tip. As for birds, I also watched that other fellow's video and bought both the tape and the light.
I fly nearly every day even when its freezing outside. One of his videos talks about flying your drone from inside your car. So I am warm and comfortable why enjoying myself. Have tried flying from inside my home, but this drastically lowers the range.
I'm new to the drone and real estate photography, and the idea of Quick Shots is appealing. But I've found that there's normally power lines or phone lines nearby. Any suggestions for using Quick Shots with something like that nearby? (Not sure how good the Mini 4 Pro is at detecting those wires, and I don't want to crash it in to an "unseen" phone line.)
Just a comment about the blue green drone symbol and pointing. I've seen people get really wrapped around the axle because the stmbol isn't green when controller isn't facing directly at the drone. The indicator goes green when the SIGNAL is the strongest...which isn't always when the controller is facing squarely to the drone. I hope that helps. I've seen people telling others in forums to calibrate their controller's compass based upon the dot being blue when they were square with the drone. Radio waves don't obey that rule.
HLG is 10-bit in the same way as D-LOG M is. HLG just uses other color metrics so you can use that footage to export drone footages to HDR. But, for normal videos that are going to get posted on RUclips, I mostly just use 'Normal' mode on my DJI Mavic 3 Pro. Because that drone have a Hasselblad lens / camera and the 'Normal' mode is also tuned by 'Hasselblad'. So, the colors and quality you get with 'Normal' mode on that drone, even though 'Normal' mode is just 8-bit, is still really really great. Now, the DJI Mini 4 Pro doesn't have a Hasselblad camera, so it might be the case that manual tuning / color grading the D-LOG M footages might be a better choice on that drone.
I always use three 3-mile collision-avoidance strobes on the top and sides; which I think keeps birds at bay around my high-bird environment at La Jolla Cove.
Thanks Russ! I have been being your channel subscriber for many years and every episode I learn something new! Would you provide a link for purchasing the bright color tape? A stupid question, on the DJI4 Mini Pro remote, I always struggle to exit from the Quickshot mode back to Normal control mode, what is the best way to exit out Quickshot Mode? Thank you !!! And what setup do you use on your controller? The mount and the tablet? :) Can we use a tablet on an RC2 controller even if it already have a screen when a lot of people over your shoulders when to see something?
Thanks for another informative video, I was wondering what monitor you were using on your controller in this video? I have 4 DJI drones, but started using the Mini 4 Pro for most of my flying. I have the CrystalSky 7.85" Ultra-Bright Drone Monitor but have not used it lately becuase I broke my super nice bracket that is no longer available.
I bought that tape too ...wondering if a red or orange high vis skin would work. Coming down from the Mavic 3 Pro, I always feel like bystanders look at the Mini 4 Pro as a toy. Maybe a bright red or yellow would look more official too. People don't get it. Fly the Mav3 Pro and they see that camera, and you get a totally different feel from them.
The return to home beacon is very useful. If it is orange you might not be able to get back to your home spot. If it is red you know that you should look for a landing site immediately and get your drone on the ground safely so you can retrieve it.
Long time since I watched one of your videos. I still have the original DJI Mavic Pro (still going strong) and I’m planning to buy the DJI Mini 5 Pro when it comes out later this year(?).
Pretty cool vid. All these tips are also applicable to the Air 3 as well. All the same features. I have red reflextive tape on my drone. was attacked once before I put it on, and never since....
did the tape put the gulls off? I am surrounded by them in my area but your giving advice you haven't tried in the video as you state you just got your roll and haven't
Looking to get a Mini 4 Pro soon. Can you manually input LAT/LONG Coordinates to fly a waypoint mission? Just found your channel and I love it. Thanks.
Russ, please do test the tape and let us know how that goes. i bet this is very high interest for all of us that have a small Mini drone in our drone lineup. Cheers!
Great video, I am currently saving my pennies for a Mini 4, this video convinced me I am doing the right thing. I had sea gulls knock a prop off of my Yuneec Typhoon H one day while filming over the ocean, luckily being a hexa-copter it didn't end up in Davey Jones Locker, but man that was scary! Why do you use a tablet instead of the RC2 controller? Which tablet are you using? Thanks again for the great tips!
More good tips here, thanks. Now, POV Waypoint versus Cruise Control, what are your thoughts regarding smoothness of filming in either? I watched another RUclipsr setting up and demonstrating Cruise Control and now I'm confused as to what works best.🤨🤔
When the AR "H" is extremely helpful is flying at night in a pitch black rural area. This is when there are little to no ambient lighting (literally flying blind). Sound crazy, but I fly this way about every other night. When you take off, fly up to near 400 feet so you won't hit any trees. Then turn to the left or right (yaw) and look for a distant light. Fly towards it and look down (this is just exploring, but very exciting as I am curious by nature). Then fly to the next lit up area and keep doing this until the battery gets low (I usually start my return at 40%). So how can I find my way back if there is no lights at your house? Look for the AR "H" and fly towards it. Sure, you can just press the RTH button, but where's the fun in that?
I use the green indicator all the time for pointing the controller. My only issue with it is the home point within the attitude indicator often blocks much of the drone symbol. There must be a way around that, but I haven't taken the time to figure it out.
Great video, one question when you plug into PC via USB can you leave wings folded down and just switch on? I always take gimble guard off though as camera moves?
Can you active track more than 1 object in the shot at a time? For example I am wanting to record some youth football games and I want those overhead "Madden" views of the game and would like to follow the flow of the play with all the running backs in the backfield because of of them will end up with the ball. I want to keep them all in the shot
Im currious if the RTH visual path adapts to the obstacles in the surrounding environment or merely provides a direct straight line. Your example is in an open area so perhaps unnecessary but does the path shown adapt and adjust for obstacles?
Here is a link to that reflective tape: amzn.to/3xfQWQU
What is the name of the mount you've got on your RC 2? And what software do you use on your computer to edit your shots?

HLG is 10-bit in the same way as D-LOG M is. HLG just uses other color metrics so you can use that footage to export drone footages to HDR.
But, for normal videos that are going to get posted on RUclips, I mostly just use 'Normal' mode on my DJI Mavic 3 Pro.

Thank you !!! And what setup do you use on your controller? The mount and the tablet? :)
Can we use a tablet on an RC2 controller even if it already have a screen when a lot of people over your shoulders when to see something?
Thanks for another informative video, I was wondering what monitor you were using on your controller in this video? I have 4 DJI drones, but started using the Mini 4 Pro for most of my flying. I have the CrystalSky 7.85" Ultra-Bright Drone Monitor but have not used it lately becuase I broke my super nice bracket that is no longer available.
Thank you for the tips. We are getting our Mini 4 Pro on Monday and are very excited to try these features!!
what a great video,,absolutely spot on,,,
Hello! How did the reflective tape test go? Were you able to find the time to try it yet? Cheers!
Still waiting for the gulls to arrive. I did see one today, so the next couple days there should be hundreds
Hi. Can i use my nd filter while using d log m? Is there can disturb my color grading process? Tq.
Great video Russ. I wish DJI would add that home point "H" display on the mini 2 and mini 3 as well with a software update. I love that feature.
It really is useful!
I find that cruse control is the ultimate! I get the smoothest footage! You have to try it!
you always have very informative videos🙂
The return to home beacon is very useful. If it is orange you might not be able to get back to your home spot. If it is red you know that you should look for a landing site immediately and get your drone on the ground safely so you can retrieve it.
Hi there. I want to try the reflective tape thing too. My question is does it have to be two colors or can it just be red?
Long time since I watched one of your videos. I still have the original DJI Mavic Pro (still going strong) and I’m planning to buy the DJI Mini 5 Pro when it comes out later this year(?).
Pretty cool vid. All these tips are also applicable to the Air 3 as well. All the same features. I have red reflextive tape on my drone. was attacked once before I put it on,
and never since....
Following you from Sweden 😎
Awesome video. What about best video setting for night time or sunsets!!
did the tape put the gulls off? I am surrounded by them in my area but your giving advice you haven't tried in the video as you state you just got your roll and haven't
Looking to get a Mini 4 Pro soon. Can you manually input LAT/LONG Coordinates to fly a waypoint mission?
Just found your channel and I love it. Thanks.
That’s for a very informative video! 👍
What main frame on your controller are you using? looks like it is hook on your c-cable?
Great video, thank you. If I buy one in the U.K. now will it be limited to 120m altitude?
Russ, please do test the tape and let us know how that goes. i bet this is very high interest for all of us that have a small Mini drone in our drone lineup. Cheers!
What are you using for your RC monitor and the bracket you use to attach to your RC
Got mine yesterday.. Testflying Saturday/Sunday
Oh, I thought you said testifying.
@@TentoesMe +1😃
I use the green indicator all the time for pointing the controller. My only issue with it is the home point within the attitude indicator often blocks much of the drone symbol. There must be a way around that, but I haven't taken the time to figure it out.
Great. Well done. Thx for these Hacks.
Did you try out the reflective tape? How did it work?
Great video, one question when you plug into PC via USB can you leave wings folded down and just switch on? I always take gimble guard off though as camera moves?
Can you active track more than 1 object in the shot at a time? For example I am wanting to record some youth football games and I want those overhead "Madden" views of the game and would like to follow the flow of the play with all the running backs in the backfield because of of them will end up with the ball. I want to keep them all in the shot
Thank you very much for the valuable tips, they will make all the difference for me!
Does that subject scanning work in D-Log M? Can you show a comparison to illustrate WHY you like D log M?
Good info. Thanks for your time. Which tablet attachment are you using with the controller? PLMK ASAP. 😎🙏🏼
I know you've covered this before, but which tablet and mount are you using on the mini 4 controller. I just bought one at Costco.
Im currious if the RTH visual path adapts to the obstacles in the surrounding environment or merely provides a direct straight line. Your example is in an open area so perhaps unnecessary but does the path shown adapt and adjust for obstacles?
