I love this but how things have changed. Each person is an individual in the way that they dress now. Some people hate formal dressing while others relish at the idea of dressing up.
It's the cleanliness part that should never go out of style.

i asked my parents about the old days before they passed away, they told me saturday was bath day, hot baths were a big expense. They took sponge baths the rest of the week. Some apartments had share bathrooms in the hall ways. And people wore there clothes for two days, but skipped a day ,so you werent seen in the same clothes. im guessing 1930's and 40's.

I'm just old fashioned but I wear a belt with shirt tucked in. I do not wear a suit to school or work like these kids but keep myself well groomed. Some of it is from the army, but much of it comes from my upbringing especially my father. You want to be treated like a man, try to look like one. It definitely gains respect and trust and defines your character.

As I was born in 1951, I can say that the standards presented are familiar to me and variations were suspect. It didn't take much to be critiqued, even an untucked shirt was cause for concern. One young lady I remember from grade school got scolded by sister (I went to Catholic school) because her bangs were slightly teased. It amuses me to see this with the perspective of today's dress codes.

I think it's great that people used to get dressed up to go to dinner and the movies. It made it an event, something to look forward to. And I appreciate it when other people bathe before they leave the house. You want to wear shorts and flip-flops to this very nice restaurant on Valentine's Day? That's between you and the woman you came here with, but please take a shower first.

@mooncat1965 I agree. Dress has become an afterthought. And I missed the memo that made flip flops de rigueur for pretty much any and all dress occasions. I too am old enough to remember when people actually dressed for success. Now its pretty much anything goes.

My daughter graduated 2 weeks ago. I was shocked at the way people dressed for the event. I'm only 45, but I guess I missed where women stopped wearing panty hose and started pairing flip-flops with a dress -- the few that actually bothered to wear a dress that is. The woman in front of me had her thong hanging out of her extremely low cut jeans. Most of the men wore ball caps the during the entire indoor ceremony. And the air horns were totally unacceptable.

People today could learn so much from this. I love the way they dressed in the 1940's, and I think this video should be shown in school.
It seems everyone now always looks like a mess. I believe people should wear what they want as long as it looks clean and they look like they actually put a little effort into their appearance.

Well, sort of. Have you notice in the old days, people seem to dress more elegantly at home and in public? This video was a major contribution to that. In today's society, we all look like slobs. When was the last time your neighbor comb his hair or bathe? You see, people's grooming habits have change since the 1940's.

I grew up in the 80s and early 90s and my parents were children and teens of the 50s, and we all had issues. However I adored 80s style as well as 50s, and who do I think dress like crap? people now, in the 2000s. none have style. So I go ahead and keep dressing like I always have and screw anyone who dislikes that.

I don't think they should have skipped the bathing portion of the film. Many people don't do that correctly; they forget the belly button hole, between each of their toes, the creases between their legs and genitals, the butthole, and fat people forget to lift up every roll and their necks. It is also important to dry every crevice completely as any moisture left on your body will cause odor.

@nanlisa...I went to the private catholic schools for 6 years we were required to wear a white pressed shirt, a suit, a tie with a tie clasp, short neatly combed hair and well polished black leather shoes. We were dressed like that every day 6 1/2 hours a day, five days a week. We did not change class rooms for each class we sat in the same seat "all day" except for lunch time. You were not allowed to speak to any student sitting around you and you had to sit with your hands clasped on the desk

Talk about dressing for school: when I was in school back in the 70's, the kids used to wear bleached jeans, hip-hugger jeans, jackets with writing all over them, and a few of the girls wore hot pants. One girl came to school with so much make-up that one of the teachers said something to her about it.
But y parents never allowed me to dress like that. I always wore conservative clothes. I got made fun of, But you know what, I really don't care. They always taught me to dress like a lady.

Nobody else is responsible but us. There's a difference between being "presentable" and going the full 9 yards. Back in the day, going through the anything close to what you present was strictly reserved for "date nights" or "Sunday Church" attendance when being dressed to the nines was only expected for such occasions, not everyday. It's a matter of determining what's appropriate for the occasion. Back in those days going to that length daily would only get you stared at for being overdone.

Agreed! Wearing pajamas in public (very slobby), going days without bathing. Just nasty.

@whatevr192 the graduates were in caps and gowns, obviously .... I'm talking about the parents and guests that were there for the ceremony. But as far as a school dress code, it's VERY lax.

Amen to what you just said. When I shop at Wal Mart I grab what I need get in the check-out line and get out of there fast. I do not like to linger at Wal Mart.

@whatevr192 Hey, sorry to hear about that. Like I said you wouldn't have had a problem in my time 25 years+ ago. Plus the dresses went past the knee then too. The only girls in short skirts were the cheerleaders and pep squad. Even our dance team wore matching full length ladies' suits in school colors to the pep rallies. If you look at my slide shows from my yearbooks you get an idea of what was worn in my area at the time. Good Luck :-)
