  • In this simple line and wash demonstration for beginners I celebrate the ordinary by sketching an electricity pylon. You can follow step by step as I use grey fine liner and watercolour to creating some interesting textures and using simple techniques to sketch and paint. Line & wash is fab for beginners as its a straight forward and accessible form of creative artwork.

I like this sort of subject matter because it's everywhere and never usually gets a second glance. Electricity substations are really interesting; even phone masts. Across the road from me there's a telegraph pole, and just recently guys have been adding new cables, mysterious boxes, those shiny heavy duty clips and what have you - probably something to do with digital switch over or something, but it's taking on the look of a totem pole or a wayside shrine to modern technology.

Yes, absolutely. There is some interesting form and textures to capture in that technology. It very easy to swan through life without actually looking at things. Drawing gives us the gift of really studying things. 📖

Yes, the ordinary 😊. Waiting outside the doc's office a few days ago, I decided to sketch & paint just the light post and the few shrubs around it.

That’s a funky telegraph pole..makes the one outside my house look boring but easier for me to sketch!lol!Great tip running your knuckle up against the pad!Would you use a ruler for straight objects if you were sketching on a sheet of paper or just free hand?I like the simplicity of this and looking forward to having a go!Really love the sky effect! Thanks Doug..❤

Most welcome as ever Beverly. I don't often use rulars to be honest. I prefer the wobbly lines anywhere. I will do some videos on skies and backgrounds soon.
