The car doesn't slow down at all in the gravel trap, so it was from 280+ kmh to 0 in the blink of an eye. It's a miracle he didn't have any broken ribs or anything, considering he impacted on the less protected part of the car

Max got lucky there was a tyre barrier to cushion his blow unlike grosjean who literally drive head first into a steel wall while piercing it in the process (if it wasn't for the halo he would have died)

This footage just puts it into so much better perspective in terms of how big that crash was. Thank god Max was able to walk away relatively okay
The helicopter footage didnt give a good idea how fast he hit the barrier. It looked like the gravel took most of the energy out of the car and he made a relatively soft impact. But then you see this footage and you realize the gravel really didnt do much and he hit that barrier at an astonishing speed. It's absolutely incredible that he walked out of there. So glad he's okay.

I wonder if maybe it was a good thing it did, the one alternative might have been for the wheels to catch on the gravel and tumble the car sideways into the fence. That would have been unbelievably bad.
@@alvaro4k On one side having the wheels dig into the gravel would have slowed the car down a lot before the big impact because of the massive graveltrap there (like Alonso's crash in Australia 2016) On the other side you never know what could happen when going in those barriers head first for example

G forces are starting to become dangerous in this sort of accident. The team would now exactly how many g he pulled. The tyre barriers do help but g forces would still be high.

not championship wise... 2020 italian gp, lewis goes thru a red light and enters the pits, honest but minor mistake, equal a stop go penalty for ten seconds (about 30 seconds lost) ... but if you take out ur rival and put him in the hospital, its only 10 seconds which he doesnt have to serve in 3 laps so u can just create a 10 second gap and can still be allowed to win ... i dont understand the precedent this sets for f1

No its not. What do you think people in 1993 thought when they didn't have death in 11 years? They thought modern safety is fantastic! Then bang 2 drivers died in 1994 (tbh this wasn't related to car build quality and strength, both were due to poor decisions from the team). What about in 2013? They didn't have a death since 1994, that's 19 years. Then bang Bianchi died. We're in the exact same spot. We think it's safe but there will always be another death. It is a deadly sport.

These type of angles are something the TV cameras never show. In a way I'm glad, because that is very concerning to see!
@shredderkrang They do show footages if the driver comes out alive. The amount of times they've shown Grosjeans incident is almost uncountable at this point. They just don't have a camera there.
One of my favorite camera places is Albert Park corner 3, where drivers go right up to the wall (if they still have it there after the 2016 Alonso incident).
Sudden impacts like these are scary, which is why you don't have cameramen sit too close on high impact zones as it can also become dangerous for them.

The tire barrier really absorb most of the impact. If that is concrete wall, Max would be dead.
I keep replaying it, the way it comes directly towards the fans, the fans reactions, the sound… I love F1. Glad max was okay.

@@emanuelvellios... The rear tyre of Verstappen was kicked off the rim by Lewis’s front tyre. There’s no tether to the rubber. It easily could have ended up in the stands.
Very lucky it didn't do a Villeneuve at Suzuka.

This shot really puts into perspective how dangerous and scary this sport is, is amazing that max can just walk out of that with just bruises and im glad he did.
Use to be much more dangerous and had a much different breed of racers. Now it's much safer and the drivers look like they came from band camp.

There were some stupid people who would have cheered but that is a very very small amount of people who shouldn't be considered fans. If you watch the broadcast all the fans cheer when Max gets out unharmed
10-15 years ago, that could of been a totally different outcome 🤯 safety has come so far
silverstone 1999 both right leg bones broken for schumacher for a much lighter accident, and HANS wasn't even mandatory. Sure death would have been today

Think the ever increasing weight limit is also not helping these crashes as they are doing a lot more damage to barriers than what they did previously

@@fischlimonade in part yes, but also the power units are approx 50% heavier than the V8s. Next years cars are due to be heavier as well but won’t be as fast so less energy in crashes.

Imagine what crashing in an F1 car made in the 80's and 90's was like, when they were basically made out of paper mache. Good to see Max walk away from this one.
Saw a Simtek crash about same spot and circumstance in 1990 I think it was and very few tyres in barrier but driver was ok, car destroyed. Most sickening sound I ever heard.
If this was the 90s you would still survive this crash and walk away
they didnt go half as fast as they do now
JJ Lehto crashed there 1994 on testing and he almost died. He was never the same after that and was dropped out of Benetton in same year i think.

Cheering was likely reacting to the racing before the crash on the TV screens which are a fair few seconds behind real time
Yep. I was sat one stand to the right of this and there was no cheering, just shock as we all witnessed a mighty large crash. I looked around others near me and we were all anxious. When Max got out, largely unaided, we all clapped and cheered that he was alive and appeared relatively ok. Nothing to do with the colour of your skin, being English, being a Max or Lewis fanboy. The F1 crowd is simply an F1 sporting fan, and very well informed and mainly egalitarian. I felt proud of how human and as one we were, and sad to read such tripe across social media later.
The people close to and directly at the scene of the accident did not applaud. But jimmy broadbent also criticized it after the race in a live stream from insta that many fans cheered when max flew off.

I heard a woman was taken to hospital due to carbon cuts. Meaning she was technically more injured than a guy getting into a 51G crash, whist sitting still... These cars are amazing.

When the camera is fixed, it makes it a lot more real. That video definitely looked like a 51G crash…official footage did not.

HANS doesn‘t really help during a sideways impact like this. But sure, the crash structures of today‘s cars are much more durable than 20 years ago.

Niki Lauda survived a near fatal accident in 1976...way worse than this..
@@maggietemp4770 nope, not way worse. Lauda’s car just catched fire. In that time it was near fatal. Lauda’s crash maybe was 12g if I look at the footage. Max his crash was 51g. A much more sudden stop and much higher speed for Max.

I was there and we weren't shown the crash until 20 seconds later.
@@ignaciotorovillacura6342 if you are at another part of the circuit it’s often really difficult to tell I 100% didn’t realise how bad it was till I saw it later on, most people where I was were just like “ohh shit” but there were some cheers but probably cus Lewis rival was out and they did not realise how bad it was.

What's most amazing about this is how far we've come in terms of safety. This crash really reminds me of Senna's crash, the sheer speed he hit that barrier and to walk away almost completely OK is insane.
and now imagine if 2021 safety of f1 existed when senna was still around...

Those first few corners at Silverstone this year were some of the most intense racing ever. Whether you're a Hamilton fan, or a Verstappen fan, if you're an F1 fan you have to concede that these two have given us a great contest this season.

I’m sat with my son at the front on your video, blue shirt, straw hat, lucky to get front row seats in my wheelchair. I didn’t realise how fast that was and it was my first visit, what a great day out. Plus I get to see myself!!!
hi! I’m going to be sat at copse corner next year, how was your experience for it? Is this the terrace part?
@@katiehargreaves3756 Hi I’m in front of the terrace so you have the added benefit of some cover, if your seats are right at the front maybe not. Your race cover will be ok but this is a fast corner so they’re pat pretty quickly and if there’s the Red Arrows they’re then if it’s like last year won’t see most of it. This will be the same for anything happening the start finish line. There’s a screen opposite to show you the racing but unless you’ve got good eyesight you may want some binoculars to see the actual leaderboard. I’d pick this seat again for viewing but as you can see it would be nice to be a little nearer.

This video really shows just how hard he hit the barriers, the aerial shots don't show that as much. So glad Max was able to walk away from this without any injury.

People in the stands did get hurt and apparently a woman had to go to the hospital because of a bad cut to her arm.
This is the kind of no-penalty, "hard" racing that some fans want though. Just a crash with 2 aggressive drivers and nothing else to watch afterwards.

Seems to me that the cheering in this video starts because they're just getting their first view of the cars coming around the corner, and it immediately stops as soon as Max starts to spin. I don't think the fans here deserve any of the criticism that's been out there.

Of course they were. I’ve sat at Silverstone many times and it is what you see. A cheer then total shock then relief. Racing fans are probably sat drinking tea not getting slowly inebriated as in another sport I don’t need to mention..

Thanks for the upload. There have been so many posts and comments about this incident, people falsely claiming that the British fans cheered when Max crashed.
This video is definitive proof that they did not cheer the crash. They were extremely concerned about him.
You can hear a slight roar in the background which is the crowd at the rest of the track after seeing the contact... Then it goes quiet as he slides across the gravel. With a concerned "oooooh" upon impact.
The sound in the TV coverage was delayed whilst being broadcast, and it gave a misleading account of what happened, as the cheers appeared to be at the same time as the crash.
Again thanks for the upload, great vantage point and proof that we did not cheer the crash! 👍🏻

That is a disgusting impact, the TV coverage did not do it justice. THANK GOD he's ok. What an awesome battle we get to see this year. That was one of the most exciting first (half) laps I've seen this year for sure.
I can guarantee you it will probably be the last. Max knows now that he can’t get his elbows out with Lewis anymore. They both will keep their distance moving forward.

Yes, it is 'unreal', because that's not what happened. She just get a nervous shock because of the sound and fell over as she was trying to get out of the way.

@@cavscott8841 I am saying that the fans that are featured on this video look like Max fans due to the orange hats/shirts they are wearing. Thus these specific fans are not cheering for his crash. As others mentioned above, there were other sections of the track where fans literally got up and started cheering when he crashed (those are likely Hamilton's fans).

People were lambasting the british for cheering and being toxic fans because Max crashed.
Its obvious most were just as shocked as anyone, i didnt hear any cheering here, mostly a dismayed groan.
Well you see a phone does not have the ability to have high quality audio. All you can really here is the people next to him and the cars are still passing by. Granted the people there in that section weren't cheering but the rest watching from other ares that didn't get to see the crash right in front of them sounded like monkeys.

Yes the contact was Lewis’s fault but I’m a big Max fan and I believe he is to blame, if Max wasn’t defending so aggressively Lewis wouldn’t have dived up the inside so aggressively. You can’t defend like a mad man and not expect the drivers you’re defending from to use the same aggression and dive up the inside.
Max was too aggressive which started a chain reaction of aggressive attack which unfortunately resulted in a accident.

Also you don't have to expect for max to give up the lead when he is ahead in the corner in the first lap of a very important race like Silverstone. I've heard some people say max should have done like leclerc just going out and lose the position, but lecrack is not competing for the championship and even the 2nd place was gold for that Ferrari.
