La Brie is the voice of the band...they would not be DT without him. They are true road warrior professionals. Would you rather they cancel because James is not feeling his best? DT would never disappoint their fans.
This is what ruined his voice. His inability to admit he needs to rest his voice. Personally think he shouldve taken a chill pill when he got hit with the bad shrimp
@@Moskal91 Easier said than done. I don’t know where you people get the idea that he makes all these decisions himself. Everything he does gets directed by Petrucci or the label, like how he had to perform Tokyo right after his food poisoning. Not his choice. He admits he needs rest, but he doesn’t get to have it when touring, he’s not an idiot like the rest of you
@@Moskal91 I saw DT in Boston a couple of nights ago, early. the tour and James sounded pretty good.

I'm not sure why James apparently had a year's worth of mucus stuck in his throat, but it gave the "Shaman, take my hand" line a pretty cool sound.
It wasn't mucus....he was on his knees begging Petrucci not to fire his out of tune ass

Ive heard Labrie in 2015/16 and his vocals live are very nearly as good as images and words era considering his age, very good, he has regained much of his power control and high pitch just not quite as high, which to be honest was a little too high anyway, unless you had the lyrics sheet in front of you, you couldnt make out what he said.
James got food poisoning shortly after Images & Words and it permanently affected his range and took years to recover.

I didn't attend any shows from the 2022 tour, but I'm pretty sure he sounds far better here than any date from the 2022 tour I've heard. He isn't lipsyncing/being supported from pre-recorded vocals here at least. I wouldn't be disappointed if I saw this live.
I went to a 2022 show and left feeling like Labrie did a fantastic job. He even hit some notes I was surprised with. But if I watch back on some videos it does not sound like how I remember, I have to wonder if the videos make it sound worse than it really is. When it’s recording on my phone and stuff. Or if it’s so loud while you are there that you just can’t even tell. Either way probably the best concert experience I’ve ever had
@@austinbramer558 Yeah, stuff definitely comes across different on video compared to in person to some extent at least. When you're in the moment, just taking it all in, I can see why you'd probably ignore/not focus on the flaws in the performance - this was exactly the case for me when I saw Genesis live last year on their reunion tour.
Though fwiw, I've heard on r/dreamtheater and other places that the audio mix of the 2022 shows was atrociously bad, heard reports from many people that just left mid-show due to it. Looking at the 2022 clips in hindsight, you can audibly hear vocal backing tracks on 6:00 and Bridges, very easy to hear and seperate the live vocals and the pre-recorded ones. They almost sounded exactly like the album versions, too!
Think that they can't use their own sound technician during a festival, that's why Labrie have to sing louder than in their own gigs an that's why it sounds worse. It happens with all the bands

The delay on LaBrie's voice is a little stand out ish and annoying? Great concert otherwise I would say.

Someone already explained it here. TL:DR, they're not using their own sound technicians, they use Wacken's, and they're set for the loudest possible sound (it's a lot of people after all) and for bands with a harder sound than DT, so their sound is affected while someone like Behemoth or Cannibal Corpse benefits from this sound.
And, as an extra, James really sounded off during the entire concert. Not sure if he was sick or hadn't warmed up his voice properly, but in the first three songs he did really bad but this one, at the end of their show, was decent enough.

He's singing gruffer here to appeal more to the metal fans, cos they generally wouldn't listen to a prog band like Dream Theater with tenor male vocals, that could be one reason no?
