  • My friend Jay Versluis is streaming the format "3D Shenanigans". Great content, maybe join us next time (wednesdays at 5pm EST).
    Please check his channel out here: / wphosting
    In one of the livestreams the questions came up: What is the difference between bump, normal and displacement map? And which one should you use?
    In this video i show the maps and explain how they work.
    The texture I used is from Texturehaven, you can download it here:

    Thank you for the wonderful explanations, Christina! As others already mentioned, showing the effects "live" really makes them understandable.
    I tried to explain the difference of the effects of bump map vs. normal map to a friend working in Blender, but this shows it so much better :)
    Maybe you could mention how the normal mapping actually works in that the colors give each pixel a vector direction where red influences the X, green the Y and blue the Z direction.

      Thank you very much for watching and your comment. I was thinking about mentioning the colors by axis, but then I would also have had to explain the difference between DirectX and OpenGL normals (y is flipped) and I thought that would be just confusing for the users, let alone all the mixed colors for angles inbetween the axis.

    Great explanation. I already knew most of this but I have been using blender for 20 years now and it took me a LONG time before I realized the difference between these three maps. But you gave a great explanation for beginners I wish I had seen this 20 years ago when I was first starting with 3d software. It would have solved a lot of confusion.

    Excellent, as always, Christina. It's been a good idea, because I think, like you, that explaining this in a chat is very difficult. I keep watching Mr Versluis live, but without entering the chat. One thing, tell him that to change the color of some material he likes, something that happened in the last live shows, just go into the nodes and add one of Hue-Saturation from the Color section to his diffuse texture. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Greetings and apologies for the mistakes : ^ )

    • @ChristinaMcKay
      @ChristinaMcKay  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting,
      It is my fault, because I asked him to stay away from the nodes so it doesn't get a mess again during the stream like the day before.
      I hope you were not offended. If that is the reason you stay away from the chat, I am really sorry, Marcos :-(
      Please join us again, you gave great tips.
      And sure, I will tell him that.
      There is nothing to apologize for, your English is great! The weekend isn't long anymore, but have a nice sunday and a great week!

      Marcos! Tell me more about the Hue/Saturation node, why should I change the hue/saturation? Glad to hear you’re watching the streams, I’ll give you a shout out next time ;-) Always nice to hear from you!

      @@WPguru Hi, Jay. If I remember correctly, in one of the videos you didn't use a texture you liked from the Extreme PBR addon because it didn't match the color you were looking for. The solution is simple enough, I leave a one minute video that I hope will clarify what I wanted to say. Sorry about the video quality, my laptop is quite old. And apologies for my English too. all channels can be used interchangeably, when they derive from a photo. just play with photoshop to generate them with the special tool or manually for the advanced and tweak your mixing in your 3D software. when they come from 3D scanned objects though, each channel represents a true property of the real texrure, so it is better to use them correctly. quality 3D scans use photgrammetey or laser scanners combined with multiple lights sources that accurately capture all texture and gloss.
    very nice tutorial, and wonderful voice :)

    Thank you for the clear explaination. I understood displacement but I never really got bump and height maps, particularly whether they should be used together or not with mixes in blender.
    Hate maps have entered my vocabulary :)

    Hi Christina. Thanks for another informative tutorial. Quick tip. 10:10 The word "height" is pronounced to sound like "kite", and not "kate".

      Thanks for watching and your comment.
      Yepp, I learned that meanwhile, but thanks. For me as a German it was kind of logical that height is pronounced the same as eight, weight etc.
      But now I know, that they aren't hate maps :D
      I am just getting back into making tutorials, and in the 3 already recorded I pronounced it correct. :-)

    I didn't get it, I for example have plane 1 polygon, I need to apply normal and height to it, but there's not enough geometry for displacement to work, although in substance painter it looks OK. What is it all about?

    • @ChristinaMcKay
      @ChristinaMcKay  3 года назад

      I explained that you have to have a highly subdivided mesh to use the displacement. You can use the option in Substance but that doesn't divide your real mesh. Although you can bake the normal map and then use it on a low poly mesh, or even one face, that doesn't work with the displacement. The displacement really deforms the mesh. If you only have one face, there is nothing that can be deformed.
      Thanks for watching and your comment.

    I don't understand why use displacement map when you can't use it on low poly mesh? instead of that we could use high poly mesh directly with all details.

    • @fuglong
      @fuglong 2 года назад +2

      You use normal maps on low poly mesh iirc. You make a high poly version, add surface details, then bake into normal map and delete the high poly version. Then your low poly has high poly details
