In summary: - in a suprise - both versions likely work for Rep - Price is reasonable - Works fairly well - Different options for stright or slanted - Different options for attaching to the rack to make it more convenient - Limited current competition Result: Dont buy - wait for one of COOP's preferred companies to make it, lol
misleading statement, he said to not buy it if you are looking for top tier one in terms of quality, than to wait and see what other companies are making, which is a completely fair statement. He also said you can buy it if you don't need it to be perfect, just something thats pretty good, and good value.
The Smith machine was invented by Jack LaLanne, who rigged up a sliding apparatus in his gym in the 1950s. It was spotted by Rudy Smith, who commissioned Paul Martin to improve it. Smith then installed the modified model in a gym he was managing at the time, Vic Tanny's gym in Los Angeles.
One of the problems seems to be that it takes up rack space. I am interested in the VTS review. In particular, the single arm movements and how it is stored when not in use. Thanks for the review!
I have a VTS Lite and I’m looking to switch to this. Honestly surprised how generally positive the reviews of the VTS have been, I don’t love mine, I cut my hand on it all the time getting the bar in and out, it’s super hard to remove/ put back on, and the bar sways and can sometimes be unsafe because it becomes unrackable. I personally wouldn’t recommend it, but I’m no Coop lol
agreed. I have that exact same rack in this video except I have 41" crossmembers which would provide more room. Think a better fit would be to move the smith as close to the front uprights and maybe reverse the orientation of the smith itself so that the hook latches face towards the front of the rack to get it even closer to the front. This would give me the option to place spotter arms if I still want to do nonfixed barbell work. I'd lose my strap safeties though so will wait to see what rep comes with
This is purely a guess, but I suspect the reason that you find it more difficult to twist and rack the bar at the top is because you’ve squeezed it into a 47” rack. It’s possible that has slightly warped the alignment a bit. I’ll be curious how it feels on a Bell of Steel rack. Great review though!
He always says it is his opinion. I appreciate hearing his opinion. I personally like Rogue and he is critical a lot of times about Rogue, I still appreciate his review. Thank you Coop 💯
For me - the SMITH machine adds some 'safety' for my aging body - yes- it may not have some of the benefits of 'free lifting//standing' - but being alone and past injuries - I find it safer for me, And if your 'think' - you can 'design' specific exercises - HA - and hopefully no injuries. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA
Jack LaLanne invented the original machine concept. It picked up the 'Smith Machine' name as it was developed further and popularized by Jack's friend Rudy Smith. Rudy is the one who really got the machine out there and his name stuck to it!
Great Review. Can't wait to see what other companies do. I will wait. Also the dust in garage sticking to oil.. so freaking true.. Which is why I haven't made the jump for a home one yet. THANKS COOP🎉 HAPPY new year🎉
I've got a knock-off glider version that I love. Incline presses, upright rows, calf raises, split squats just feel amazing on them. Another cool part is using speciality bars for it!
Smith machines have grown in me after using one regularly for many months now. Upright rows, split squats and reverse lunges, calf raises, incline and shoulder presses, and back squats are the main movements I use it for. Once you learn and mark/memorize the spots for the safety catches, being able to go to failure on a wide variety of movements is awesome.
I forget what video it was but at one point he mentioned that Bells of Steel has a habit of releasing a ton of equipment and then if a product doesn’t sell well they discontinue it leaving those who did buy in shit out of luck if there is a problem or they need parts for whatever reason. He does mention in this video that they came in early on this product release yet again so he may also just be anticipating they will need a version 2
@@themartinantunez yep this is it. BoS goes fast but often they often miss the mark because things aren't thought out enough. If you don't expect future iterations or more things compatible with the piece you bought though they're a great option
@@YunisRajab they are the most modular company out right now. Both your statements are untrue. They still even support their original racks, releasing new attachments. This cannot be said about either rep or titan.
2 things: 1. On the Ares 2.0 the way you have it could you still use the Lat Pulldown?? 2. Would this fit an 80” height rep 5000? Loved the review thanks!!
Jack LaLanne invented the smith machine. Rudy Smith commissioned Paul Martin to improve it. Rudy Smith then installed it in a gym that he was managing. It is named after Rudy Smith.
Hey Coop, love the review. I have to use a S.M. to lift heavy as I've hurt my shoulders multiple times and the SM seems to be the only way I can press heavy safely. There's something about being able to consistently place the bar in the exact position that prevents me getting hurt again.
I have a good amount of bells equipment and I almost pulled the trigger on this but I am going to wait. Also was close on VTS as well but am going to wait. Feel like this is the start of many more to come
Smith machines have an angle primary due to the legacy construction of prior smith machines. The early manufacturers created angles on the smith to mimick the mean bar travel in a clean and jerk from the floor to the shoulder which at the time was a very popular lift in the U.S. due to the earlier popularity of Olympic weightlifting in the U.S.
I really like Bells of Steel and everything they bring to the home gym community. It seems like it would be better to just get a stand alone smith machine unless this attachment was easier to remove from the rack. Also your thumbnail has it attached to the front of the rack but the video has it inside. Just wondering why you went with it there. Thanks!
Can you do a video with this vs VTS? In particular, I would like to know if there is a way to BYOB this and have it set up to remove the bar quickly after each workout, like we can with the VTS.
Pls review the bolt fitness smith. Btw, welcome to the smith machine nation. Natty Lifting for 40+ yrs (4yrs comp), smith machine provide the needed options for life long lifting. Iso and injury work around most importantly. A real game changer for home gym cause u can mimic many machines w/o the expense and space. My BoS is coming in april. 😊 Keep up the good work Coop!
You need to loosen the upper bolts, push the bar into the upper position in the highest racked position then tighten the bolts. It will hold in this position with the correct spacing.
please review the VTS lite rack attachment and compare to Ares V1. As I am one of those dummies who bought that version to only have the better version come out. I also have the basement gym version 80" and would love to know how to set VTS up on that.
I’ve been BB squatting forever with not much progress and I’m considering on the smith machine since a lot of bodybuilders do use them. Would love to see bulletproof review.
Wonder if it'll work for a Titan. 3x3 5/8 is the same as their hydra which I'm guessing it fits. I'll probably just get the Titan smith machine anyhow.
This is interesting but I'm leaning more towards the VTS lite since I think it would be more compatible with my REP PR-4000 and Ares 1.0 (while still not being perfect, I'd have to remove one of units to fully utilize my Ares).
Jack LaLanne, an American fitness expert, invented the Smith machine in the 1950s. Rudy Smith, an executive at Tanny's Gym, improved the design and installed it in his gym. The machine is named after Rudy Smith.
Please do the VTS/Lite review!!! Would be nice to know if it works on the rep rack on the same upright you have here with enough space to perform all the movements.
Does this set up interfere with the lat pulldown/low row? I have an 80 inch rep rack with Ares 2.0, doesn’t seem like you can rack it high and out of the way with my shorter rack.
Would be nice to have a version that makes use of the weight stack. I really don't see why there are no other options than the inspire ft2 that does this.
A little more innovation is still needed. I think if the smith uprights were able to slide back and forward and secured to crossmembers holes when in use it will be great. Also, the counter balance is important. Can’t wait to see what others come out with.
Hey Coop, how did you mount this Smith attachment to the top and bottom crossmember and avoided mounting it to an upright? BoS told me that atleast one mounted side has to be on an upright and the other side can mount to a crossmember if desired. This advice was given for a 90" rack that i asked about. Is your REP rack in the video shorter than 90" or something?
Would this work on an 80 inch PR-5000? Also, I've been thinking about getting a PR-5000. Debating 16 inch crossmember or 30 inch. Am I right in thinking I could use this with an Ares 2.0 in a 16 inch crossmember and just bench/squat outside the rack?
Good review, Coop. I can attest that their customer service is very responsive to answering questions about compatibility as I have contacted them twice - once for their new cable stack and again for this smith attachment. Unfortunately neither are compatible with my 72" Light Commercial rack which was quite disappointing and made me regret investing in their ecosystem. If anyone has recommendations I'd love to hear them.
I would think at least the vts base trolley will be around for a few years. The latch, hook, and the rest is obviously being updated on the fly. It'd be prettyyyy expensive for bpf to redesign the trolley.
Is this better than the bulletproof fitness vts rack attachment that acts like a smith machine attached on the power rack? Is this better or something like the Bullproof attachment is better?

I got that same impression. He didn’t mention any flaw in the design that isn’t inherent to smith machines.

Yes to the VTS review. I've been waiting on the bigger channels to review it.

I've had my bolt rack smith machine add-on for 2 years. best addition to my gym i've made in a long time

I recommend exploring the VTS lite option with Rogue spacing, it’s the combo that is most compatible with specialty bars (SSB, MG4CN, etc)
Nothing better than an incline bench on a good smith machine
My fav chest movement until I got the iso-handles and now both arms move independently
Garage Gym Reviews would love a review on the Force USA C10

It’s called honesty
Would love to see reviews on the VTS and your bolt attachment. Thanks, Coop 💪
Please review the SYL TS 2.0
The VTS still seems like the winner, especially with their “feather” bar AND iso handles. Bulletproof ALL DAY LONG BABY!!
Totally agree, I have the VTS with the iso handles and waiting for the "feather" bar to arrive. Once I got everything adjusted, it moves flawlessly.
Plus those new latches are coming so hopefully swapping bars/handles is less of a hassle than it is now
Excellence. VTS review next please!
Best of both worlds
Can you do a review of the Bolt Fitness one? Seems like a nice addition to a 4 post rack
Yes VTS review please
Fair review, main drawback is you can't lift inside of rack as spotters or safeties won't work.
Yes review the VTS please

I'm in the same boat. I have a cheap RIt FIt smith attachment to fill in while I wait for something a bit better. (FWIW -- it's performing well.)
Can’t quite tell if Coop realized the stop tucks all the down in the brackets giving it a little more depth.
Yeah he ain't used a smith much.
Someone needs to put a cambered barbell on one of these

I settled for just losing the space in the rack to the smith machine and doing most of my work on the outside with spotter arms
Mini cooper your a trooper
Would love to see BOLT Fitness -Bolt on Smith Machine review
Please do a review on the Bolt Fitness smith attachment.
I'm going with the Get RXd all-in one. Ft and Smith machine. Less $ than a Rep rack with the Aries 2.0
Could you have put the smith attachment at the front of your rack and still had room for your ares handles? (Or jammer trolleys?)
Can you do a video with this vs VTS? In particular, I would like to know if there is a way to BYOB this and have it set up to remove the bar quickly after each workout, like we can with the VTS.

Bulletproof Vts🙏
VTS and VTS Lite review please and thank you
A "VTS Light" or "SYL TS 2.0" test would be nice !
Rudy Smith improved this machine and made it popular. That's why it's called the Smith
Do you think REP will come out with an attachment like this?
please review the VTS lite rack attachment and compare to Ares V1. As I am one of those dummies who bought that version to only have the better version come out. I also have the basement gym version 80" and would love to know how to set VTS up on that.

Rudy Smith manufactured the Smith Machine after Jack Lalanne invented it/conceptualized it
lm leaning towards a half rack all in one with a smith.

I want to see REP's version - keep this ability to go angled/vertical (hopefully with easier adjustability), add counterbalance.
Review SMAI's smith attachment!
Do you think the BYOB version would work with a regular cambered bar? Not a multi grip one a cambered bar like Titan Fitness and EliteFTS one
Gluck'd!
+1 please review the VTS systems
atm im looking at the Body power MFT elite
Hey, crazy question, but what kind of watch is that?
How many of those shirts you got Coop? Happy you found your Steve Jobs uniform!

When is the Rogue functional trainer review dropping?
On the byob version how do you get the safety hooks on it ?
You should have mentioned that Rep has said they are working on a Smith attachment.
So for those Rep Fitness racks, you may want to hold out.

What setup do have when you show the clip of you using the smith machine. Looks like your setup is red in color
Smith machines take their name after Rudy Smith, the bodybuilding champion who helped design and popularize them.
Coop, great review. FYI, you are a bit too obsessed with what you deem to be the ideal knurling.
So this will fit on 2x3 like the Titan T3?
I’m also curious about a VTS review. I think it’s super cool, but very much looks like a prototype that will be replaced with a version 2.0 very soon.
