    Just found your channel after buying too much at the farmers market. It was so much more cheaper, I went a little crazy😂

      Thank ya for watching and commenting Arkansas_Native, welcome to the channel!! I heard that, buying in bulk is the way to go if ya have a way to preserve what ya bought!! I grew several squash plants in the past, more than what I needed just in case a few plants didn't make it, and I ended up with a ton of squash, that vacuum sealer was the way to go for sure!! I preciate ya stopping by the channel, have a great week!! Dan

      I am in NC. The cut off date to plant squash from seed is Aug so we have lots of time to get round two in.

    I saw your dill pickle mix in the background. Have you ever tried to make the bread & butter pickle mix and use it for yellow squash? I do it every year, and it's REALLY good if you like sweeter pickles. I take the squash that get too big for my taste, cut them into spears and trim out the seeds. Then I pack them in jars like cucumber spears and put the brine over them - just like cucumber pickles. I also add so onions and sweet banana peppers sometimes. I LOVE them! They stay surprisingly crisp, and I don't have to feel bad when I miss a squash and it gets too big. Thanks for the video - Arms Family Homestead referred me over here, and I'm looking forward to doing some binge watching to catch up here. :)

      Hey Julie, ya know I never thought about doing that!! I like bread and butter hot pickles, if you ever seen those, but I like bread and butter pickles as well. I'm glad you posted this up, I might try this with some squash, I'll miss one every now and then and it gets too big!! I sure thank you for stopping by our channel and a big thank you if you subscribed as well. Check out the giveaway when you get a chance. Thank you again.........Dan

    Interesting. Just learned to flash freeze them for 2 hours minimum and then shrink them in vacuum seal them so they aren't soft afterwards.

      Yes sir, flash freezing that squash makes it easier to put into those vacuum seal bags!! Thank ya for watching and commenting Mr Jeffery, welcome to our community and the channel!! Dan

    I love fried squash I could eat a plate full by myself. Just bread it up and fry in Olive Oil, or whatever oil you prefer.. Love it on the grill with onions, tomatoes. Dan are you guys going to get any of the storms headed for LA?

    • @HomeInTheSticks
      @HomeInTheSticks  7 лет назад

      Hey Ken, I'm all about eating squash exactly as you described, I did some fresh squash on the grill a couple 6 days ago, turned out really good!!! We're definitely watching the storms, my Dad lives in New Orleans so he's watching it pretty good himself. The last storm track I saw had 2 models present, 1 showing a track straight towards east central MS, towards us. Lord wills, it will die down hopefully!! Thanks for watching Ken!! Dan

    I'm hoping I get some yellow squash this year. Squash bugs got it last year. Right now I've got some spaghetti and butternut on the vine.
    I bet your chickens would like some of that leftover squash too.

      Yes mam, the hens love squash, sometimes I'll go to the store and buy the "old" butternut squash on discount, cut it in half and put it in the coop and watch the girls go at it!! Your garden is looking really good DaelithTN, I hope your squash makes for ya!!! Dan

    I saw a video yesterday of Tangi the Cavers Wife saying that she doesn't blanch squash. I blanched yellow squash last year and it was terrible. Such mush! I don't blanch zucchini, but I shred it. I'm not sure why I did it last year. I'd love to see how you cook it after you freezer it. Thanks for sharing!

    • @HomeInTheSticks
      @HomeInTheSticks  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Renee, the yellow squash gets cut into medallions, vacuumed sealed and straight into the freezer. I have some squash from 2014 that we still cook and they taste wonderful. I'll check and see if we have any squash in the freezer left and I'll sure do a cooking video on how we cook yellow squash at our home place!!! Thank you for watching Renee!!! Dan

      Home In The Sticks that's great! I'm the only one that eats yellow squash at my house, so I didn't plant any this year. I'll plant some next year, and maybe trade for some this year, and freeze extras just for me like you've done.

    Would like to see a recipe with using squash from last year. I am curious the texture when you open after frozen. Thanks :)

      K Rutkoski, I'll sure get a video up when I get to cooking some of the squash we put up!!! Key thing is to pat the squash down after washing it so when it hits the freezer, no left over water can freeze up possibly causing freezer burn!!! Dan

    does this work the same for zucchini?

    • @HomeInTheSticks
      @HomeInTheSticks  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Bryce, that's something I haven't tried vacuum sealing yet. We have some zucchini out in the earth garden growing now. Hopefully they'll make and we can give it a shot. I don't see why it wouldn't work, cutting the zucchini into medallions and vacuum sealing them......I'll sure enough get a video up if we do get some zucchini this season!! Dan
