      Matthew Harrop what about no mans sky or mighty number 9, though I myself never really played, only watching from RUclips, plus I hear no man's sky updated enough to be quite good, not great but good.

      I myself never played any game with any pre-conceived notion, the only game I ever did, was spore, I play until space, but never really enjoyed anything past the land creatures, the tribes sucked, the cities meh, the space not really fun, so I guess spore is the only one I have personal experience, I mean now a days with replays I just stop after the land creatures, but I feel like they should have further develop the later segments to match the earlier segments.

      JudgeMathas Too Human for me. The entire setting is so fantastic and yet every ounce of gameplay felt half finished or just janky. The idea of the gods just having incredible technology really sold me on the concept, only to be let down by stick mashing.

    The thing with the 'story' in Absolver is that it is just there for the sake of being there. Since the early days of development, the game has always been about creating your own unique style and arena PVP. It reminds me A LOT of Blade Symphony. Everything until the final boss feels like it's just there to gear you up and allow you to learn moves for the actual endgame, PVP.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, but that's probably a huge mistake right there. They should have focused on a really compelling story with engaging characters instead for sure. Thinking back to a classic from the past in my opinion another game focused on melee combat was Oni from back when Bungie was still making PC games. That game might not have had the best level design, but it's (melee) combat was superb and it's story was decent. It had plenty of combat moves to discover and never felt grindy or unfair. It had good boss fights and while linear as heck by modern standards, it was really an immersive experience. The Ghost in the Shell vibe obviously was strong in Oni, so anyone not into the whole anime setting might not have been that impressed possibly, but from a gameplay perspective Oni is easily a hundred times better than Absolver is. I think I would agree with your comparison with Blade Symphony to Absolver, except there's no real point in Absolver to play much PvP IMHO. It gets boring before you know it.

    • @MapleBull95
      @MapleBull95 7 лет назад +2

      That is a really good point, but you're missing a very crucial point. Oni was developed by several multi-million dollar companies. Absolver was developed by Sloclap, a team of 6 people. You're comparing a game made by indie developers to a game made by behemoths. It's true that it could have been better in other aspects beside combat mechanics, though. They probably just didn't want to hire someone to write a story.

      The developers are planning to add more. Notice how there wasn't a credits scene at the "end" of the game? We just played the prologue.
      Also, not just talking out of my ass, they have said they were planning to add more styles and attacks. Hell, the ending is pretty much the Mentor telling you "hey, have fun, until we add more of the story. Meanwhile, we are going to watch the meta morph and change while adding moves that work well with it".
      A good game to compare this to is Warframe. They started out as a "Just be a space ninja" simulator. Just going from planet to planet being a ninja with only self imposed goals really guiding you. But they started to add small bits of story, then as they got more confident (and talent) they added larger and larger stories.
      I predict, give this a few years, and the game will actually become complete. Until then, everyone should treat the actual "end game" to creating your own school. That is what I am doing
      EDIT: Lol, didn't even wait to hear Mathas say "the ending felt like a prequel". Oh how right he is.

    Most fighting games have little to no single player content. The meat is in the PVP. This is released for half the price of a fighting game, and offers just about the same content and depth.

    This game is not a pve game. It is a pvp game. The amazing combat system you mentioned is for pvp. The stale npcs you mentioned are to learn moves from for pvp. The amazing boss fights you mentioned is for pvp. The wide as a puddle and deep as an ocean game you mentioned... Is for pvp.
    That said, I would love to see more pve content. And they plan more content. I want this game to also be for co op, not just pvp. It has potential, it hasn't missed an opportunity, it's just still working on it.
    Also note, the pvp is fun as shit and is honestly worth the whole cost of the game in and of it's self.

    Well said, man. I'mm enjoying the game a whole lot myself, but like a lot of other folks have said, this game is going to need constant love from its dev team if it wants to survive the first three months. It has a huge community already, as far as I can tell, and I'm sure the feedback is going to spur Sloclap to work hard to keep introducing more content and bug fixes.
    For now, though, I'm pretty happy with my buy. It was worth the preorder.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 7 лет назад

      I doubt this will last even one month. The game barely has 5 hours of real content and by the time you've gotten to a point of exploring 1 vs 1 against other players, you'll find out there's not much there to keep playing for.

    Figured I'd add this, seeing I'm about halfway into the video and I heard Mathas talk about there not being any legendary equips to farm for. There are. As far as I've seen, you've only spent about.. seven, maybe eight hours into the game? Some of the bosses, for the majority Jinn and the Marked Ones /do/ drop loot. They only drop it at a very low rate. I've heard people say they got Jinn's mask, or Jinn's sword. Same with Ama Saba's mask, the marked one you fight in Bird Caller's Outpost. So, there are loot you can grind and farm for. However with the review, as many have already mentioned, the meat is in the PvP. PvE is fun, short and sweet. It shouldn't be the length of a Dark Souls game in my opinion, but hey, that's just me. I like the game's story as it is, the lore is promising and nice, but SloClap could certainly improve in some aspects, which I'm sure if the game survives that they will.
    Edit: Okay now, woah.. You're legitly comparing a 3D action adventure martial arts game, to a 2D side perspective fighting game like Street Fighter? Like, I understand what you mean with the 1v1, but Absolver is far different than Street Fighter. It's like you're comparing apples to oranges. Or apples to pears. It doesn't work that way, my friend. From my experience fighting in PvP, which isn't a whole lot like say Tru3Talent or GreyMaiden, I've seen that this is far more straight forward than say Street Fighter is, but has the same concepts. You master your combat deck, as opposed to a character, while learning your opponent's combat deck in the matter of a 1v1 PvP match. You have a lot less time learning their deck if they don't rematch you, which is where the fun of 1v1 PvP in Absolver comes from. It's mindgames, like Dark Souls has in its PvP. If anything Absolver is the love child between Dark Souls and For Honor, with the overall aesthetic of Dark Souls with its world and overall multiple enemies versus you in the PvE, yet has For Honor's 1v1 PvP in the fact you have different stances, while in For Honor you use your right stick to block attacks whereas in Absolver you use it to use different moves from different stances. If you compared this PvP to Dark Souls I would've understood that, since both use mind games, both are action adventure games with great combat if done well and mastered right.

      Spacing, Punishes, low crushes, high crushes, frame priority, block stun, mix-ups, conditioning, cancels, a set string of moves depending on your set combo deck can be compared to a move-list (albeit a smaller one (Which is something that exists in the fighting game space already)), and an emphasis on reads to actually get in meaningful damage. Listen, I get your argument, and I get why so many people are against the idea of considering Absolver a fighting game in the vain of Street Fighter and Tekken. But the essence and spirit is there, WAY more so than it exists in For Honor and high level Dark Souls PvP. For Honor had an emphasis on blocking and parrying as your defensive options, and depending on match ups you can simply attack to stuff longer attack animations. Your offensive game had the likes of heavy cancels and unblockables, but for the most part your damage primarily came from lights, and quick unblockables. Spacing didn't matter as moves practically sucked you into a vortex.
      In the case of Dark Souls, in terms of melee combat, Dark souls was primarily predictions, spacing, punishing, and was dominated by parry lords that knew the animations of every weapon type. You also had the issue of stats and items greatly effecting the how to matches played out, being able to roll one extra time to exhaust your opponent's stamina was a big deal. I often compared my time with Dark Souls 2's PvP to a fighting game do to how methodical things felt, but after playing a few fighting games my mind drastically changed on that silly idea. There was way too much variance in the decider of a winner, winning in Absolver feels earned, and losing comes with lessons that can be immediately applied to win in a rematch (Not to say the same isn't true for both Souls and For Honor, I simply feel there's more to absorb and learn).
      Absolver is surprisingly deep, way more so than I thought it would be, a lot of care needs to be put into crafting a combat deck as your deck decides how much control you have over your character, and the approaches of your opponent. Your deck decides your punishes, mix-up potential, how effective you can make your spacing, how you can condition your opponent to react, how many moves you have to avoid lows/highs/thrusts, and your defensive option for dealing with moves you see coming. Hell there are even moves that force your opponent to guess which side you are attacking from. Also much like Tekken, some moves are intentionally designed to track dashes. Game knowledge is just as important in Absolver as it would be any fighting game.
      I also love that in the event your opponent has memorized the strings of your combat deck, you can simply save up three tension gauges, pull out a weapon, and make them guess what your new strings are.
      I fucking love Absolver.

    • @dutchvikingrsagas
      @dutchvikingrsagas 7 лет назад

      I never said or hinted at the fact I didn't believe Absolver to have some similarities to say Street Fighter or Tekken, however with the way he worded it, he compared it to Street Fighter, which is wrong. As you already said, and as I stated in my comment, your combat deck is completely customizable to your style and your wants and wishes for your deck. With Street Fighter or Tekken that is not the case. You can only pick other characters, but their fighting styles/moves aren't customizable. Only thing that I saw was customizable in Street Fighter IV was the Super. I'm not against considering Absolver a fighting game in the vain of Street Fighter, but I don't see it as such either. If anything I see it more as a mixture of an arena fighter like For Honor and maybe Tekken with the way the mix-ups are used, but not so much with Street Fighter. However this is what I've seen from my experience in my 20+ hours and on the stream I've done so far.

    Loved the review, i'd love to see absolver added to over time. I've just finished my first time beating all the bosses. On the part of the story i've noticed that as you progress through the pvp combat trials you can refight each boss they have brand new cutscenes which add more to the story, i'm no where near seeing them all but i feel like a more fleshed out story might be put together once i've seen them all?

    I disagree on several points. For $26, this is a massive amount of content. Add in endgame PvP and I'll be coming back to this again and again. This game is for people who wanted a lot more out of For Honor, not for people who wanted more out of Destiny. Also, the world is bland? Agree to disagree their, bro. It strikes me more as nuanced. Not bland at all. This game has much more depth than you think. Hundreds of moves to make your own string. I think you reviewed a fighting game with looter rpg elements as if it were a looter rpg.

      not to mention, there are also rare spawns that has rare combat moves or even rare drop items. Heck, i spent hours grinding for sword moves, to an extent of running a whole map just to give a sword to that specific NPC so that they MIGHT perform the moves i want to learn.

    It may feel like a "demo" at the moment, but I hear that SloClap is going to add more styles, weapons, armors, masks, and other story content... FOR FREE! FOR 25 bucks that is amazing! I think that you should rejudge this game after said content comes out.

      The combat system is much deeper and more fun imo. People complain about the size of the map and lenght of the campaign but that's silly. There's no story mode(where you can play the whole thing coop) and single player bosses in For Honor. The game is also half the price of For Honor.

    I get that your're not complaining. This is a review after all but compalining about the size/lenght of the map and story in a multiplayer pvp game is kind of silly... The game is "For Honor-like" but it has way more depth in combat, more game modes, an actual story, bosses and it's half the price of For Honor. Just the fact that we have a singleplayer mode is good enough for a game like that. Saying "there's nothing much to the game once you play a while" is like saying there's nothing much to a sports game or a FPS game...

    I only felt the story shining through during the pre-boss battle cut-scenes. If you reach certain online levels and do the fight again, the character(s) will have new, cool dialogue. One of my favourite lines is from the second time you fight with Cargal and Kilnor, who explain that you don't need a mask to reform, confirming that re-spawning is an actual in universe thing. Other than that, sadly, the few NPC's you can talk to will just spout incomprehensible names at you, or give you really obvious game-play advice. Its so frustrating, its almost as if they have a story there, and are only letting us see a bit of it. I'm praying for future content patches, since I think a sequel is unlikely.

  • @SlyphYT
    @SlyphYT 7 лет назад

    I agree with a few things you said. But, the game is centered around PVP. They basically pulled a For Honor in that aspect but just executed it better. What you said as this is more of a "Demo" or "Pre-Sequel" would be really cool. Absolver is a unique game so Sloclap had very little to go off of to execute their planned gameplay mechanics and Absolver would act more like a test for them. I would love to see a sequel that goes more in depth in the story or even added content in their free DLC they are releasing.

  • @lckzinvites

    Absolver, like many others fighting games, sadly is not a game for everyone. The core mechanic is the game, you fight and thats it. The reward is beating your opponent, even better if he was a good player. Thats not enough of a reward for most people. I do think the game could really use some ranked system, but I'm pretty sure it's already on the dev plans.

    The game has a pvp focus so I'm not too bothered about the story right now. Rare items come from combat trials. Some bosses do drop masks rarely tbh. 3v1 fights are some of my favourite. It helps you learn positioning and set you up for 3v3 when that's released. The story continues a bit at certain pvp levels. I think the game excels in 1v1 combat.

  • @PhantomBones101

    Maybe this game was a test for the mechanics. If we want more they may make something with the mechanics and a better story and world. But we also have to address the fact that there are points when lag ruins the fights or causes you to drop out of the world because it didn't load all the way.

I could see why people didn't like it because it was in some ways a departure of it predecessor and lacked various themes and gameplay mechanics that the original had in strides .
    Anyways then I played Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and finally understood got why everyone hate Invisible War.

    I disagree. This game has some mad depth when it comes to PVP.
    I mean yeah. Four styles does seem small, right? Hmmmm. Not really. You see, imagine the styles as archtypes in a fighting game instead of a separate character. You have your zoner, your grappler, counter-attacker, footsies specialist, etc. This is coming from someone who has watched other people play the shit out of the PVP and coming from someone who is currently PLAYING the shit out of the PVP.
    At least in my opinion, the opposite is true. This game was built around the idea of PVP first, and then the PVE elements were thought of.

    I knew from the start the story wasn't going to be this amazing thing it's clearly a game that was ment to be competitive and pvp focused. You should of never gone into it thinking you where getting the last guardian but with martial arts. If you think a competitive pvp game with fighting that feels near perfect and almost life like this game might just be your jam. I don't normally care for competitive games but the moment I got my first kill in a 1v1 it was like I just beat a dark souls boss first try read the patterns perfectly attacked when I needed to. Fought him again and he was like fighting a different boss it felt amazing. Learning is the name of the game if you spam and mash lose focus or just don't pay attention it's a frustrating game to be sure but as you get better so do other players it gets to the point where one attack or block determines who wins or loses its exhilarating to put it bluntly. I recommend it to anyone who has a competitive streak.

    Man, I was so excited for Absolver since it's first announcement. Kung-Fu Dark Souls, since me up. But I gradually saw the same flaws that spoiled my enjoyment of games like Necropolis, and STRAFE. Promising an experience it simply couldn't deliver on. I'm glad I bought Necropolis so I learned my lesson to wait out the reviews for STRAFE and Absolver. And while I will definitely be picking up Absolver when it goes on sale at some point, I will always be salty about the experience that was promised by Necropolis, and it never delivered on. It's boring, unimmersive, tedious, unfair at times and not by design, and simply downright cheap. And I really wanted to like Necropolis.

    Unfulfilled potential? Red steel 2. The game itself was great (Best sword combat and gunplay on the wii EVER, Switching between gun and katana was flawless), and the world itself is interesting (Some sort of futuristic-ish Wild west setting, maybe post apocalyptic if the manual is to be believed), But it was just too short. In the end it felt like some necessary stuff was missing (NG+) and the story was really undeveloped. Sadly, because of the fact it shared its name with red steel 1, a horrible mess of a game, it was a commercial flop and Ubisoft will probably never touch it again.
    I would be estatic (is that the word?) if you reviewed the game!

    As for the question, I think I would have to say Black & White 2. I am still hoping we will one day see another creature focused God game that will really deliver upon the original promise of the Black & White series. The potential is totally there. In reality the two games that tried the concept kind of succumbed under it's own weight. I personally would not blame the gesture based control scheme for it's failure, because there's actually something very immersive about that in a God game. But it probably would have helped had the game been more transparent about what the creature learned and or how to exploit that. Again, I would love to see a Black & White 3 someday.

My biggest gripe is that I've had so many bugs and glitches. Currently my game refuses to give me a trophy I earned and a couple days ago my save file was corrupted. I was told it was irreversible and that I should've made an online storage save. (I was able to recover my save eventually after an hour of tinkering) But on the subject of PVE environments and gameplay this game lacks. It's bosses are phenomenal but I don't think that's what the developers were intending. The lore of the game is that the enemies you fight in it are lost prospects, so they never became absolvers and can't present as big of a challenge to you as others. So once you've beaten the game(becoming an absolver yourself) you go into PVP to fight fellow absolver for a true test using everything you've learned in the short 4-6 hour story. And once you reach a few certain ranks 3 bosses are repeatable and add a few short notes of dialogue that actually add a lot to the lore.
    In short, this game has so much potential. It's not that they missed it, it's just that they wanted to get this game to us as fast as possible that way when new content rolls around we are ready and waiting for the new challenge.
    They've already said they are going to do 3V3 but if you look at some of the environments they actually have certain areas they could open up for a PVE focused update.
    Now on the matter of gear, yeah the NPC loot is very forgettable, but by playing pvp I've gotten to customize my character and make it perfect for how I would enjoy it to be.
    The RNG is very tight lipped with better items but it's worth the grind if you can get invested in the world.
    I've watched a few of your videos in the past man and you've got great content.
    When I saw this, I had to watch it. Keep it up man.
    Sincerest Alex GG

    Absolver is a PvP game and you say it's lacking PvE content. I brought Absolver for PvP, and so did most people who did the slightest amount of research. It would be like buying Dark Souls and say it was lacking because it didn't have an easy mode for the people who wanted it.

    Most fighting games have pretty pitiful stories, at best (or worst) rivaling American wrestling, and not really offering anything of particular quality. Absolver offers a much richer flavor why people are running around punching each other, at the risk of almost, if not just quite, reaching into something bigger than it is.

    Wait this game is only thirty dollars with promises of no DLC or paid content? yeah it is, and you can trust the words of a company like DEVOLVER DIDGITAL, this game is no where near done. There is coming content and there is one thing you're forgetting here; Armour and weapons which are both truly important are possible to be unlocked through PVP and you obviously didnt play enough PVP to unlock the armour and weapons that can change the way you play when combined with the schools and ability to create your own fighting styles. You left out alot in this review which are pin points in the sellings of Absolver and you truly didn't seem to go into the PVP aspect of the game enough. I could be wrong, maybe you have tons of hours in the pvp and gotten the randomised drops from the PVP, but either way you didn't state the true gifts this game brings out with its online gameplay.

    The game that was the biggest letdown? Diablo3 for sure.
    Back to Absolver. What needs to be said is that all future content will be released for free, so those 30 bucks buy you everything. For a halfpriced game, 9 bosses isn't that bad (Demon's Souls had about 18) and you can come for them at higher level. Plus, who knows what bosses they might release in the future.
    I also like how you have to go out there for moves. Ones you know where to find that move you want it's just awesome to hunt those baddies. And I believe you can learn them of players too? Never paid much attention to that :| That would be great for those that don't want to grind the game. Just enter duals, those are great ones people know what they are doing and if you can learn the moves there as well ...

    Destiny. Wheres the damn story!? I know there's some but it pales in comparison to Halo... Maybe not One but Bungie knows how to would build by know and it's not with Grimoire cards. The ever rising lvl cap also sucks because it's done with gear! You thought you were done grinding? Say hello to the next expansion. But don't worry cuz it's totally not an MMO (it just has some of the worst things MMOs have). I blow $100 on the day one get everything including free next gen console upgrade when the time comes pack. Made it through the first expansion grumbling about needing new gear (exotic upgrading or replacing sucks!) and gave up after the new story bit but before the first checkpoint of the new strike. Didn't even bother with the House of Whatever. I hope they do better with Two, not for me because I'm not going back but for those who still dig it. I wish I was one of you. Watch over you fellow Guardians my stay strong may Titen brothers and sisters, as you have the Last City. May it stand forever and the traveler never fall. Cayde-6 almost makes it all worth it... almost.

    You run past enemies without fighting and unlocking new moves??? Afraid of falling? You just suck lol the point of the game is like streetfighter. Combat trials with ur unique character. Duh.. your own unique streer fighter character. Ofcourse there arent doff characters, you make your own. Street fighter has no loot, just lots of characters and moves. Soon enough absolver will have more moves...

    Colour me completely and utterly unimpressed with this game. It has more hype behind it than the actual game seems to justify. I might be a tad biased, because I don't think the art style really does it for me. There's simply something very generic or impersonal about it. It lacks immersion instantly. It starts with the lack of faces on characters and ends with this weird flatly coloured world design.
    It gets a few bonus points for being melee focused, but the level design really feels very very generic leading to nowhere. There's no purpose within this world. Literally. It's 5 hours of passing through a randomly put together world of mostly these impersonal or generic level assets. Sorry, but it's a very very boring experience front to end. Also, the game developer has really forgotten to implement a good multi-opponent fighting system. There's no good way to fight multiple opponents.
    Also, can we please oh please agree that being focused on gathering loot alone is a very flawed way of meaningful game design?? A game like Borderlands worked because it's missions were fun, it had a bunch of cool and funny characters with good writing and great voice overs and you basically had a couple of playstyles you could try with the various classes. It was easy to get sucked into that world for the fun it brought. It's loot system with an insane variety of weaponry worked well within that framework, but at no point was the main selling point or rather 'best part of the game'. I think developers should really take a good look at why Borderlands was cool and why Absolver is just plain boring in comparison. When I think of it, the developer probably also should take a very good look at old games like Oni made by Bungie back when they still made PC games actually. That game had a better combat system, despite being more shallow. The fighting in Absolver kind of feels disconnected, when anyone who's ever played a 2D fighting game knows you need to have this connection with the enemy for it to really work well. Don't get me wrong, I dislike the overly automatic nature of the Batman Arkham / Shadow of Mordor fighting of multiple opponents, but there's something very satisfying about how that system works. Now if only you could actually decide for yourself which enemy to attack using directions. We need modern games with a mix of the old Oni and more recent Batman Arkham.

    Judge imma have to dislike the video im sorry theres just too much misinformation on this one. First yes the loot has variable stats and some are quite noticible. Second yes rare loot drops from jinn mesca i.e he's katana and mask. Third you do get more lore once you hit level 20 on pvp and go back to some bosses. Those are just a few i caught also the game is a pvp experience mostly. The pve is setting you up so of course it is lackluster but i found it engaging. The meat of the game is pvp and also for the price absolver delivers a fenomenal experience with more updates to come free of charge. In a business now overfloded with micro transactions filler to drag the game out absolver is very fresh and also quite competitive and enjoyable. I just hope it doesnt die out. Also i like how they give you no direction in the game. Its literal you are a martial artist trying to find the best of the best lost prospects so you can become an absolver and actually fight the best of the best. I personally loved the premise. Once you become an absolver its like you surpassed all these bosses who were whopping your ass. Now you stand above them in rank i dont know it just felt really good

    • @ChilluminatiPod
      @ChilluminatiPod 7 лет назад +13

      It's not that I WANT the grind or loot to keep me going. But when playing the game, looking for something, ANYTHING, to keep me playing I found very little. The story doesn't exist, the world is dry and empty and uninteresting beyond pretty sights, the PvP is fun but not as replayable as something like Streetfight/Mortal Kombat etc..., and the loot (something they do market) is negligible. I adore the mechanics but there's nothing SURROUNDING the mechanics to keep me playing. And with all the talk of upcoming free DLC etc, they clearly want you to continue playing past the very quick PvE content.

    • @TheGerudan
      @TheGerudan 7 лет назад +1

      But having loot that you have to grind only creates the illusion of motivation...I don't know...maybe that is enough for most people, but I have played too many MMOs to care for just loot anymore. If loot is your only motivation to play the game, while the actual mechanics have become boring, the story isn't engaging (or isn't there in the first place), then maybe the game isn't worth playing after all.

      It's lacking in content the same way any fighting game is lacking in content, and it's half the price of most good fighters these days. Fighting against the same 3-4 bosses, and same conceptual mechanics without any real depth does not constitute as to having endless content.
      It may have a little replay ability with just the singular fact that you can fight people in pvp.. But even games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and even the old king of fighters games had more depth, variety and story.
      Absolver has a cool concept to it.. But it was very poorly administered.
      This game will be dead here very soon from the bland monotony of its nature.
