Britt, the song is about temptation, not infidelity. The protagonist is tempted to stray but in the end stays true to his wife by being reminded by his ring. We all have temptations in life. It's how we deal with them that shows our character. He stayed true in the end.
Well depending on what you would call infidelity, because in the song it says he was in her arms, kissing her lips, and wanting to be her "loving man"... So at least emotional cheating and if you consider any physical contact with another person cheating then the holding and kissing would count as cheating as well!
@@larryg7126 Agreed, seeing things in public might cause a momentary thought...but if that ring means anything you dismiss it right there and remind yourself how grateful, blessed, and thankful you are to have the ONE in your life. This is PRIME Randy Travis. I grew up with this voice playing on the radio of the tractor I was driving.... Some times when I hear those songs again, I can still smell the dirt in the air
@@cynthiachessani6788 Not all do, the old John Deere that I always had to drive didn't, didn't have a cab, just an umbrella to keep the sun off. I brought along an old radio that you could barely hear above the drone of the tractor, and I played whatever rock station the radio would pick up, until I just had to give up and put it on country. Hi Britt. This masterpiece was written by the duo of Paul Overstreet and Don Schultz. For another great song from Randy, try either He walked on water or diggin up bones.
So refreshing to see old-school Country music gaining acceptance across cultural barriers. Randy Travis's voice is instantly recognizeable whether singing or speaking in a movie part, as he did a few times. Smooth as molases, fluid, and baritone resonant to stir the soul deep.
The timbre of his rich baritone voice is unparalleled. My favorite Randy Travis songs are Reasons I Cheat; Promises; Take Another Swing At Me; This is Me; Look Heart, No Hands; Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man; That’s Where I Draw the Line; I Told You So; The Box; He Walked On Water; Three Wooden Crosses; Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart; It’s Just a Matter of Time; On the Other Hand; and Forever and Ever Amen.
This song just reminds me of a song Elvis sang that's called " It's your baby (you rock it)." Because if cheater can cheat on their spouses or significant other, then they will cheat on the one they are cheating with sooner or later.
Randy Travis is one of my favorite country singers. I've worked construction my whole life. In a lot of blue collar trades they won't allow you to wear rings for safety reasons. One of the best quotes I will always remember, “cheaters never prosper". Love your reactions, you always pick some really great songs. KEEP IT UP!!!👍
Randy Travis was found by talent scouts singing while washing dishes. I was told by other truck drivers that he was working as a dish washer at a truck stop when he was found!
Hi Britt, glad you are reviewing Randy Travis, he came along when we needed a traditional country singer in 80s, suggest you review "Its just a matter of time" a song from the late fifties by Brook Benton. Have a great day.
Although really, he's not singing about cheating so much as about someone who was tempted to but in the end just can't do it. This song was such a huge hit and on the radio all the time and people loved to slow dance to it.
Did you know at the country awards when Randy was just starting out Dolly Parton went in audience and sat in Randy’s lap you could tell he was shy and uncomfortable. Love Randy God Bless him and his wife and may I say with no judgement second wife. His first marriage was with his manager who was a lot older then him I think more than 20 years
Back in the day I sang like Randy. Then came throat cancer. several surgeries later I do good to talk at all. I've been a huge fan of Randy's since day one. For a good slice of this music I recommend "I thought he walked on water" "The reasons I cheat" "Digging Up Bones" , "Storms of Life"
I’ve always loved Randy Travis’s voice! His live performance of “Promises” is awesome! He also has collabs with George Jones (A Few Old Country Boys) and Josh Turner (Long Black Train/Three wooden Crosses) that are superb!

Woderful! :) Randy's first Numer-One-Single, back in '86. :) He recorded a great duet with George Jones, called "A few old Country Boys", you should check that one out. And if you like Randy Travis, you'll like Keith Whitley... "I'm no stranger to the rain" or "Don't close your eyes". Great stuff! (y)
Randy got his very early start in a little country music place between Charlotte and Gastonia, NC. He was the featured artist on Friday night. He is a NC native.
Lovery country song sung buy randy travis ive got a few albums of is with song on it me favourite song of is what a great voice ay lovery backing to the song as well great upload video cheers again
Britt Randy's voice is quintessential country all the way. He has a large catalog of great songs. You should react to "I thought he walked on water" or "Look heart no hands", "Digging up Bones" and there are many more.
Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote this song and it always bugged me because the narrator did cheat on his wife in the second verse. However, if you listen to Paul Overstreet’s version the second verse goes “When you placed your hand on mine, I could feel desire. And when I looked into your eyes, I found myself. And I know with just one kiss, we could start a fire. But that fire would just start burning someone else.” I much prefer that and I’m not sure why Randy Travis and his producer changed it. Either way, great reaction, Britt!!
That's so interesting. Songwriting is all about word choice. Sometimes you might modify a lyric to make the idea clearer but this one changes a major point in the song.
You’re right, that ring mean everything. That’s why the wedding ring goes on your finger first, then the engagement ring. It’s worn on the left finger because there’s a vein that runs straight to your heart.
The Smothers Brothers show was VERY controversial in the late sixties. They were vocally anti-Vietnam war, and had popular bands and artists who sang anti-war songs like Pete Seeger, who the censors originally wouldn't let play on the show, but they got him back months later to sing Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, with obvious anti-war and anti-President Nixon lyrics. People like Rob Reiner and Steve Martin were writers for the Smothers Brothers, and the show also had a recurring skit called "Share a Little Tea with Goldie", about a cute hippy girl who drinks marijuana-laced tea who always greeted her viewers the same way..."High!" The brothers were fired and their show was cancelled because they bucked the censors and insisted a skit with a mock sermon by comic David Steinberg be included in the show, and when the censors wouldn't allow it, they delivered a show that was several minutes too short. The main joke they didn't allow would pass the censors easily a few years later, and now. E! showed reruns of the CBS show in the 80's.
The one thing I think is important to remember is that he was tempted, but he is reminded that he has a bigger, commitment and more important commitment to himself into his wife. He’s human so he’s tempted but thank goodness he reminds himself. He has a bigger commitment to himself and his wife.
Randy Travis is what might be called a country crooner. And he's so likable that you can't help but listen and think about what he's explaining. Even though it ain't right! Lol
