Outstanding! I was having trouble learning how to use the loft command (in Inventor Professional 2019, no less, the much later version) and this was a huge help to me! Thank you!
@Banchuba Glad you liked the video. I haven't worked with Maya yet, just haven't had a chance. I would guess you would need to use a generic format like iges or sat to move back and forth, but I am not so sure how well that will work. I know 3DS Max will read inventor files, but I am not sure if Maya does yet.
Hi John, just tried that and your were on the money, that was my problem,so just need to remember to project geometry onto my current work-plane if I want to use in current sketch and can turn it into construction geometry if need be! Thanks John
Thanks for the swift reply John, funny that you say that about the exam and mention Thom Tremblay aswell,I just started using Autodesk university and the first lecture I listened to was Thom's on sheet metal and he said the same thing, great lecture! You both have made me feel more positive as I was getting downbeat,I'm in ireland and mature student, change of career as family business went after 35 years building powerboats, just can't get a teacher here so doing it by myself, want a job? Chat again
Hi John. Thanks for this great beginner-loft tutorial. Its probably the best on youtube at the moment! (And, it works fpr Inventor 2011 too)Kind Regards
John, that is sooo cool what you are making. Because i overthink to try inventor and i was searching for a good beginner tutorial. And that IS A VERY GOOD tutorial AND insteresting one too! I have one question. I love too to work with maya 2012. Could i build in Maya a object and put it in inventor and work there with it? And after it, back to maya?
John, I have tried mimicking tour tutorial step by step. Yet when I select one of my spline lines as a rail it highlights both as if I was looking at a wire frame of the bottle. Then I recieve an error message " The attempted loft operation found a rail curve intersecting a section more then one time. Try with a differant rail curve or modify the rail curve so that intersects each section only once." Please help. Also when you highlight a line its red? How do you change to red from white?!Thanks
hi John, just trying your loft tutorial with you at the moment using inventor 2012 and for some reason it wont let me tangent constraint on ellipse to circle, strange!Any idea why that would happen?
Sorry John, meant to add would it have anything to do with any settings in applications as I have not been using 2012 long?Just tried it again and it wont do it,the circle will highlight if I go over it as long as I dont pick something on the sketch ribbon!!!
How do I connect the sketches to the rail, whether this takes the form of a quarter ellipse? When I do I get a warning about intersection, or when the warning does not appear, the "holt" does not follow the ellipse-shaped rail. Thank you
John, thanks for that, much appreciated! I've been following some of your tutorials recently and their 5 star as easy to follow, passed the associate exam in november and looking towards the professional,is it hard and is there anything I need to focus on? Thanks John
@65564james My guess is you have not projected the circle geometry to the current sketch. Once you do that it creates a relationship between the circle and the new circle in the sketch with the ellipse. Once it has been projected to the sketch you should be able to add the constraint.
Great Vids I cannot find anything on inventor on how to design conveyor systems. How do you use frame generator? Nothing on youtube about this. Great uploads thoe A++++++
When creating the rail sketch you need to project points from the loft sketches into the rail sketch. If you are already doing that I would need to see the sketch and file.
I have a problem with lofting. I want to loft 31 airfoil sections on a constant distance from each other. I always have 2 arrows while lofting, but for some reason at a certain section the 2 arrows become one and the loftthe loft says it intersects so it can't loft. any idea what might be my fault?
I don;t see a link to a file did you post the file somewhere that I can download it? If not, you will need to describe what you are trying to design. As soon as I see what you are working on I may be able to help. Even if you want to create a video of the problem you are having and post it to your youtube channel.
@65564james It is hard, but some would argue that associates is harder because you don't use the software. In the professional you must use the software to solve problems. Google "AU certification prep" a coworker of mine, Thom Tremblay, has a couple certification prep classes online that would probably help. The key to the professional exam is understanding a road range of functionality, things like sheetmetal, weldments, part modeling, drawings, etc...
Anyone have any tips that will help me reduce errors with the loft tool? It is frustrating to have to adjust my curves when inventor tells me they need to be more smooth..
A finger...like a human finger? What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to test ergonomics or model a character? If you are doing ergonomics testing I wouldn't use a loft unless you were doing something very specific. If you are trying to design a character I would look at 3DS Max or Maya which are products built for that purpose.

Sorry for the late reply. Do you mean a bottle that has a base that looks like a flower with petals and transitions to something like an ellipse?
Thanks John. Nice clear video.
Awesome Tutorial! Thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You cleared up some confusion for me.

When you say 3D heart do you mean a realistic heart or an extruded valentine type heart? They are different in both looks and difficulty.
I would guess that the end points of the lines are not touching. Can you post the file somewhere and send me a link? I can take a look.

@65564james Edit he sketch with the ellipse and project the circle to the sketch. The project geometry option is in the sketch toolbar.

I finally made it work. Thanks anyway.
i have a sketch that i want to use as a rail but its not a solid line, its connected lines and the rail chioce cant accept it as one rail....
thank you so much for you advice. But I tried to do that, and I couldn't. Can you see the file? I would apreciate your help. really.. Martha

There is another tutorial foe the same example...find out loft videos on youtube.
Whats autodesk inventor profession 2012?
Thnx Sir....
Thank you so much. I tried to do what you told me, and I failed.
I know you can build it in Inventor, I will see what I can come up with. No promises.
i failed will go back and try again

i am thinking on 3d valentin heart
