Excellent video. I'm here to refresh my Inventor skills since I might get a job using the software. However, I don't want to sound like a hater, but this constraint command is soooo much easier in Solidworks. So switching from Solidworks to Inventor, I was really struggling with this command. But thanks to this video i understand it a lot better know specially the Assemble command. Thanks John.

Inventor is ridiculously cumbersome with its mating process.

Sorry for the late reply. I used contact sets. If you right click on a part in the browser there is an option to add it to a contact set. Do that on all the parts you want to bump into each other and then enable the contact solver. With the solver running you can drag parts on the screen and they will bump into other while you are dragging them around.

I do have good internet, no doubt about that.
You are correct. If you have all the drawings and specs it might be easier to build all the parts first. Most of the time I am building from scratch so I do build my parts in the assembly. Inventor is really built for creating parts in the assembly. All you ahve to do is double click a part and you can edit from within the assembly.

That depends on the environment. In the assembly environment you can right click on a part and select contact set. Do this on several parts, then go to the inspect tab and select activate contact solver. This will make parts selected as contact set to react to each other in the assembly environment. In the dynamic sim environment you can add a 2D or 3D contact joint. Let me know if that helps or if you want a short video on it.

I would lean toward using a revolve to create the door knob and possibly event the escutcheon. Once you have both created you will need to use an axis to axis mate to line up the door knob stem with the hole in the escutcheon. I would control the depth with a flush constraint at the bottom of the stem and the back of the escutcheon, perhaps with an offset to control the depth. It's kind of hard to explain without seeing exactly what you are trying to do.

  • @JohnHelfen
    @JohnHelfen  12 лет назад

You probably need to make them flexible. By default subassemblies are locked in position when placed in another assembly. If you right click the subassembly in the browser you can make if flexible. I think this will fix the issue.

I am not sure I follow. Yes, threaded holes and the fasteners in them will cause interference. By default each assembly has a representation in the browser that will turn off all fasteners to you can ignore interference form fasteners, since you expect that type of interference. Let me know if this helps.

Hello John. Very nice video. Do you have, by any chance, one that goes through the building of the trebuchet parts, with it's properties and etc? I looked at your videos but couldn't find it. It would be nice to see how you did all the modelling, the constraints (which there is video) and the dynamic simulation (which you also have the video).

Hum...that is a very interesting question. There is a bend tool that may be able to be used to accomplish this. You may also be able to complete this in 3DS Max and import the model into inventor. What is the purpose of the part. I have seen a lot of parts, but not sure if I have ever seen that before.

Can you provide more detail as to what specifically you are trying to build. I really don't do a huge amount of surface modeling because most of what I build can be done in solids. Surface modeling is an art in itself. The only command I really use is sculpt to create solids from intersecting surfaces.

When I right click in the constraints folder to drive constraints I only see replace component part and create note, as apposed to the first subassy i put in the assembly which lets me go into drive constraints :-(.

Hi, there is a gap between "Treb Arm" and both "Exernal Retaining Rings". How can we constrain it, so that the Treb Arm can move between both those rings along the axis (either in assembly environment or using the joints in simulation environment)? It's not important here for the kinematics, but it's kind of important for simulations. I'm really lost at this one ;/

If you check for interferences in your assembly does the fasteners threads get flagged? I usually bypass this by not selecting the fasteners when i do this check. But in some cases the bolt hole is not a through hole(bolt and nut). It is a tapped hole with a specific depth and checking to see if you fastener is correct length. In your assembly you have few fasteners so checking them manually is easy. But in some assemblies, I have thousands of fasteners. Is there a solution to this check?

I have a working hinge assembly but when I try and place it in a new assembly for example a door with 2 hinges, either only one of the hinges works as it should or neither work and I cannot access the driven constraints option in the browser bar. When I get one of the hinges to work the other simply follows the door stiff rather than bending at the hinge.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Best regards

you must have awesome internet speed,, uploading 47 min HD video takes some time! :D
i think if you have specifications given,, its easy to make parts separately and put them in assembly,, but if you are making something new or without specs,, we should build new parts within assembly,, i dn know if you can do it in inventor but in SW i do this way :)
