Thanks everyone for all your kind words. The 2020 Great Guitar Build Off was so much fun and a terrific distraction during a difficult time. We would like to thank Crimson Guitars for coming up with and sponsoring this this event. It was not an easy process and they should be commended for all the hard work. We are honored to have been included with all the exceptionally talented competitors who took time out of their lives to make this build-off something truly remarkable. All the instruments offer a unique glimpse into the builder’s creative perspectives and we are humbled to have shared the stage with so many skilled artisans. We were lucky enough to get to know some of you and have had so much fun trying to make the world a more fun place through friendship and guitar building. We urge everyone to deep dive into the massive talent pool that is the “Un-Official” portion of this event. This is where the rubber meets the road and the builders here are imposing their will on the workshop and dominating any materials that dare to resist. Your efforts have earned the respect of the guitar community.
I think your guitar was my favourite but the one I'd least like to own (except the awful charcoal one) because I wouldn't know what to do with it 🤣 Nice work though. You folks were the real flag bearers for the competition.
Y’all’s guitar was awesome. Fabric fretboard. Are you kidding me? I hope to be able to buy one of y’all’s fabric top guitars at some point. Quality work and class act comment.
@@LRBerry Copyrighting (patenting)is the death of guitars. I just heard the other day Jeff Kiesel tried to patent every single color of fretboards. There was also that big fight years ago with the cream/black guitar pickup combo. Its all nuts.
Tamar should have been a bit higher, that design was great. Dan could definitely have been a couple of places up as well. Phil had probably the most beautiful guitar, but he didn't do it all himself did he? Wonderbread guitars had the most extreme build, but I'm not sure I'd want to gig with it. As for Diresta, if it was being marked I'd give him a "U". The fact he's only one place below Tamar is depressing.
If it was a direct voting system, like a poll, I bet that the results would be very different. But it's doesn't matter at the end. Maybe next year they could implement a viewers' favorite.
I think there were other factors in where Phil placed -- they missed the submission deadline, and plus some assholes screwed with the ebay auction, bidding it up with no intention to actually pay. Sucks, but even Phil said he should not win. Phil's a classy guy, IMO.
@@Craftlngo I think he was just doing something he could get built in time. Give him another shot next year and see what he comes up with. Not all of them are going to be winners every time. After all, imagine how badly wrong Ben's could have gone- its beautiful, but it might equally have snapped like match sticks!
I wasn't a fan of Diresta's and #1 for me was Tamar's, the finish on the Angove guitar was really nice. But what really matters was the money that was raised for the charities.
The only one I didn't like was diresta's. Mildly distressed Tamar wasnt higher but there are some beautiful guitars there. The colour on the angove was lovely.
My thoughts too. Tamar’s guitar was amazing!!! I was surprised and bummed that she placed so low. But... she’s not really a guitar builder. Same with Jimmy Diresta. I guess we can’t be too surprised that the custom guitar builders finished ahead of the woodworker/cabinet maker.
Yeah she raised more donations than BigD and auctioned for more than BigD. not sure how much the views/likes.subscriptions thing made things fairer or not. IMO the reality is she did at least as well as most of the others in this list and the ranking is more of a close call than a meaningful rank.
Great job, and thank you for putting together this awesome video! (and everything else of course) I see a number of comments about the amazing work that Dan and Tamar did, among others. Let's all keep in mind what a significant role the handicap system played in the rankings. Not to detract at all from any of the beautiful work done by any of the builders, but you can see how a smaller channel like mine would rank high as a result of the math. In the end, beautiful guitars raised a lot of money for great causes and that's what matters.
Same, but you have to take into consideration that most of the viewers and buyers are guitar players, the amount of people interested in buying a bass might significantly lower
Tamar's guitar is the one I wish I could have bid on. I thought it looked so cool, and had so many distinct tones to play with. I vote that next year Jimmy Diresta gets relegated to the unofficial league to make way for some of the unofficial builders to be promoted to the official league.
Wonderbread guitars certainly made a beast. I'm a new fan of their channel too. My favourite was actually Tamar's, it was just a simple and beautiful finish that looked great.
Absolute crime that Tamar and Dan were both so low on the board. Credit to Angove and Crimson for interesting approaches to the body, but the other builds struck me as fairly straight-forward otherwise. Even the triple-neck was... "just" a triple-neck. Tamar and Dan brought truly unique ideas to the wiring as well as the finishing and body design -- thought theirs were the most beautiful designs by far. Absolutely would have put up cash for Tamar's build if I had it.
Agreed. Didn't really like the triple neck, but I can see why it sold for a lot and got views. The Angrove was just too aggressive for my taste. Loved the finish on McKnight's, but, for me, it didn't have the individuality of Dan's, Tamar's, or Ben's. In saying that, BigD's was the one I'd want.
I can't pick a favorite because they're all so cool in their own respective ways. Congratulations to all the participants and thank you so very much Crimson Guitars and Ben Crowe for sponsoring this event. Next years competition will be crazy.

The unofficial build off is showing us all that there are some fantastic builders on here that should (and now are) get more people watching and subscribing to their channels. I’m looking forward to seeing the winner compete alongside the official entrants next year. Thank you to all that took part in this amazing big competition for not only giving us all some great builds to watch but for all you’ve done for your chosen charities.
Great job, Ben. Kudos to the builders and congrats to the charities who benefit from the work and the generosity of the community. This is a wonderful pearl in the oyster of a year that badly needs something positive. Cheers from your friends in British Columbia, Canada!
Indeed. It was their channel sizes that made the difference there because of the handicap system. They both did beautiful work and raised lots for their charities.
Surprised that you didn't mention that Diresta's new jeans are available to buy, via his merch store. 🤣🤣 Agree with the other commenters that Tamar should have been higher. That was a beautiful guitar -- had the tuners on the right way up and everything!
The winner was pretty out there and well deserving for creativity and effort alone, but I think for the regular instruments the best 3 were McKnight, Tamar and Brad.
Amazing!! Crimson guitars, and Ben in particular, thank you for what you guys have done. From start to finish this was epic!! Really opened my eyes to other builders channels too which is great. Congratulations to all involved. I'm gutted it's over, but here's to 2021. Love from Australia
Congrats to all the participants and winners of the guitars for making the contest a great success for charity! I'm looking forward to next year's contest. An acoustic guitar buildoff could be fun. Guitars and guitar builders rule! Thanks
Ben,you and all the other builders here should be very proud. All phenomenal looking instruments and all so stylistically unique to each builder involved. The winners here are us the viewers (and of course everyone's chosen charities)
I've loved every min of the whole competition and still enjoying the unofficial entries, no winners or losers just great comradery and great fundraising. Glad it's happening again next year, I may even become an unofficial entry! All fine instruments!
I really enjoyed following this competition, even though I thought some of the judging was sketchy. Tamar's entry should have been much higher, but I digress. This was a LOT of fun, and it's comforting to know there are still good people in this mad world of ours. Congratulations to all contestants!
Yes like a small piece of exotic wood that has to be used somewhere on the guitar that is visible when playing it and you have to use over 75% of the piece .
I think the real winners are the charities and the good folks who bought the guitars, I loved watching this contest and the resulting guitars are all great, Ben you've pulled off a minor miracle and you should be proud of the result.
One of the things that impressed me the most was the diversity of guitars produced. There was something for just about every taste and application. From daily driver gigable guitars, to works of art, to works of insanity. Impressive guitars, all of them. Congratulations to all the builders and their charities.
Ben, words aren't enough mate. Well done you. We've all enjoyed your videos for the build and, past builds. Be proud of yourself mate, youve raised a lot of Dosh worldwide
Ben. Thank you for sponsoring the build off. Watching you and the rest of the builders was one of the few truley good things to happen over this stange year and i learned a trick or two from every builder. Please keep up the Great work.
Really enjoyed watching yours and all the other builders the past 6 months. Made lockdown way more bearable. Nearly 40 large US for charity too! Inspirational stuff man! :)))
Thanks Ben and all the other builders. It really was a great idea and was a great result for the charities. Next year include the top builders of the unofficial competition in the official one.
Congratz to the Wonderbread Boys, Brad Angove, BigD, Guns&Guitars, 3x3 and Crimson. This big push this year helped to get the wagon rolling. Without the winners, that would be far slower. By taking it over the top, it also will be a bit calmer in that regard cause it was already done. The unofficial entries have lots of a-mazing stuff in the works. A guitar that looks like local cows, an Icecream Sandwich of some bonehead, huge walnut binding, setbacks, SciFi stuff and more. I hope that you can get that raffle going next year. Lots of people have some loose money but can't get a guitar or bass of that level. There'll be a lot more green for the charities and more new traffic on the channels as well. Next time, you all should link to your videos in your ebay auctions to insure that someone who just stumbles over your guitar on ebay can be sucked in from both directions.
Congratulations to all that took part! You have all made amazing guitars and done wonderful things for your charities 👏🏼 Everybody’s videos have been great to watch! I applaud each and every one of you! I look forward to next year’s competition and hopefully I’ll be entering the build-along myself! 🎸
Well done to all the competitors! Magnificent builds by all. And the big winner was all the charities that you have all supported. Look forward to the un-official competition (again some extremely talented builders) 2021, that build off hasn’t begun. Yet.......!
I hope with the GGBO as a charity it can be a raffle, I can’t justify buying one of those beautiful guitars. But I would buy $100 in raffle tickets for a shot at one.
Yep. That was the only disappointment for me, that each guitar would go to someone with the largest pockets. And I think that #wonderbread were always going to find that person. But this was a fantastic idea, only marred by international law. Really looking forward to next years GGBO2021. But don;' forget there are over a hundred others still building instruments, out there. Go and give them your support. As i could never have afforded any of the guitars that were in the "Big Boy" (apologies to Tamar!), i will hopefully manage to convince one of my favourite Officially Unofficial entrants to let me buy their creation, as it would be cool to have at least something that resulted from this brilliant idea,
@@jimmusson I certainly would. In fact I was all lined up to do so, then the changed the rules, again. :( I _get it,_ it was a legal issue, but it's a shame.
Obviously yours has the most concentrated and intense labor crammed into it, which made it fascinating to watch. For me, this was an inspiring competition. I resumed guitar building after a lapse of about 37 years. Cooped up because of our shelter in place, I dusted off some old templates I drew in high school and started making sawdust again. Since then I’ve put five guitars on the wall, and am about to try building my own necks. As a designer and builder, I won’t be satisfied until I can truly call myself a luthier, and again, the gang that makes up the 2020 GGBO has opened my eyes to the possibilities.
Watching all these builds really inspired me. Dan and Phil had the sweetest builds in my opinion but that being said I am totally blown away by the unofficial builds. Especially the King Bespoke carved body build. I am looking forward to the finalists in that category.
Congratulations to all the folks involved in this fantastic event. Timing was amazingly serendipitous and great to get some positive memories out of 2020, I'm sure we are all greatful for the wonderful distraction this has provided in troubled times. Thank you Ben for guiding the ship through some stormy patches and thanks to all the Builders involved for getting onboard. The results in my opinion are very fair and well deserved. Amazing undiscovered talent in this wonderful community and seeing this develop into an annual event 👍✌😎
Congratulations to everyone, especially the charities who benefit from this spectacular endeavor! I wonder why it took this long to make this a thing? Totally brilliant, kids! Love to you all, and thank you for providing such a lovely distraction during this gawdawful year of distancing and the despair ❤️💋💋❤️
Impressed with the builds, but no surprise there. More impressed with the overall enthusiasm that the builders put into the competition and the results of their respective labours. Each instrument had its own unique features and discussion will no doubt rage over winners and losers. But in the end there are 8 very lucky guitar buyers around the world and who knows how many lucky recipients of the fine work the charities will no doubt do with the money raised. Ben, you and your team are stars for organising this. In a troubled and somewhat awful year, this has been a ray of sunshine for all concerned. While I may never be able to afford one of your fine guitars, I feel richer for having played a tiny tiny part in this venture. You have my eternal thumbs up.
All of them win! What is more... every charity wins! Continuing to watch the unofficial build alongside now.... lots of brilliant stuff... Well done Ben and all at Crimson for such an inspirational idea... You ROCK!
Congratulations to all the competitors and thank you for putting in so much time and effort for charity. Thanks to Crimson for an epic idea and for organising the whole thing.
Great job on this charity event, Ben! Beautiful guitars by the official and unofficial participants! Amazing and talented craftsmen out there, and I’m sure there are many more who’d like to participate next year! Cheers!
@ Tamar Hannah @3x3Customs Reading through the comments, it seems clear that you are the people's champion. You may not have won the contest, but you won a hell of a lot of respect from all of us.
Hers was my favorite build followed closely by Dans bass.. Phils looked stunning but there was less building there.. still, that one in a shop would be bought in seconds imo. B
Great work by everyone involved, and good on ya for donating your time and creativity to your chosen charities. Got to say, I enjoyed every second I got to play that Texas Toast beast of a guitar, it was super cool.
haven't seen end yet and kinda doesn't matter to me considering the purpose and spirit of competition...but think Crimsons efforts to make this reality and hopefully more of them is just a great thing for all of us who just love guitars and how they improve our lives daily.....THANK YOU CRIMSON GUITARS....a purchase of some sort from your company is on my to do list....
Well done to all. Considering it was the first time this has happened, it was a great success. I'm sure the pressure was on the contestants to fit the build in around their busy schedules and GGBO will now become a fixed date in their calendars. I have to say, though, that some/all of the unofficial builds are setting standards that even our RUclips 'celebs' will struggle to compete with and I hope they get the recognition they deserve. The big brands should be worried! 😄
Well done Ben, you should be extremely proud of yourself and what you have raised for charity. proud of your build and everyone else who took part.... there was some fantastic unofficial builds really liked Odin build
The biggest winner were us who watched !!!! it was fun , entertaining, amusing and well i learned a few things to boot .. good job everyone , almost everyone :) always seems to be one dud ..
Totally awesome by all builders. I have my favorite, but I’m just here to say “job well done to all participants!” And thanks to Crimson Guitars for this brilliant idea! I’m usually not in the “everybody deserves a trophy” camp. But the spirit of this competition in such a grueling year puts me in that camp for now. Good job to all!🤘🏻
Great event, great instruments and congratulations for the money raised. You can all be proud of yourself, and of your results. I cannot wait for 2021 👏👏👏👏👏👏 you are all amazing people ❤️🎸
A fantastic montage. I really love the horologically influenced hardware finishing on Ben's guitar. And the finish on Phil McKnight's build? Stunning 😍
Watching all the videos has been fantastic, I hope you are going to take nominations for channels for the 2021 GGBO. So many great builders discovered off the back of this competition.
Great result for all the charities and some great builds too. Good entertainment and fascinating viewing. A win all round. Top effort Ben, really pleased to see it will happen again next year😁👍👍
Here’s one thing (of many) that I have learned. When it comes time for me to buy a high end guitar, I will stay away from the big names and buy from one of these smaller builders. Fantastic work.
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, watching each build and getting exposed to channels I had otherwise not seen before. Great efforts all round for charity. Loving the unofficial build along entries too, so very inspiring. Looking forward to next year 👍
Well Done to all the builders. And a special thanks to Ben for all his hard work in making this build-off such a huge success. I enjoyed the hours of watching these skilled Masters of their Craft. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!! Oh and a special Hello to everyone from Sunny South Africa!!
This whole thing was awesome. I've watched basically every video posted about this and a bunch of unofficial ones. 3x3 was definitely the surprise of the competition for me. I thought her build was excellent and should have placed higher. Seeing as next year will be '21, you should have 21 builders in it.
The idea and what stand behind it is great, the wave it generate within the community is supper great and I watched, enjoyed all crazy ideas and learned a lot. Well Done !!!! Wish you that 2021 will double itself and will be even greater success. Who knows, maybe in a year or two I may even join it :-)
Great competition, I looked foreword to all the new videos as they came out. Ben has to be my favorite single neck. Fearless in design and unbelievable patience in execution. Texas Toast brought a gun to a knife fight, clearly, and deserved the win. Kudos to all involved, it has been awesome!
congratz to everyone involved for raising the money for their respective charities and to Texas Toast for winning the competition, I loved watching all the videos of the builds, great work Crimson Guitars for putting this all together, can't wait for next years great guitar build off challenge.
I loved this competition! While I think that Texas Toast's guitar was amazing, I feel like they were the only one's working as a team... I could be wrong on that. I think it's to be expected that a small team could come up with something like they did. Personally I'm more impressed with what the others cranked out given they did it themselves. I definitely agree that they deserved to win though.
Over all, this turned out the way that I thought it would. The one guitar I would have bid on but thought i had no chance at was the 2nd place guitar. That was awesome.
Well done to all involved. Some lovely work in all the guitars but more important is the money raised for charity, so I'm not going to pick what I think was the best. Looking forward to 2021! I must comment on the editing though- far too many half- second cuts, which are tiring to watch.
In the "making it" podcast he didnt sound really happy about his build. But he said he had timeproblems and he build 3-4 day before the competition ended.

Thanks brohterman
I’m still watching the unofficial entries. So much talent out there👍🏼
Yep. Me too.
Tim Beaton have you see the Blue Rockers build!? ruclips.net/video/DAgBYXU3CfQ/видео.html
Look forward to the un-official competition (again some extremely talented builders)
2021, that build off hasn’t begun.
Yet.......!
Congratulations to everyone participated GGBO 2020! Already looking forward to 2021!
Thanks for sponsoring this, Ben, its the best thing that's happened this year.
I hope with the GGBO as a charity it can be a raffle, I can’t justify buying one of those beautiful guitars. But I would buy $100 in raffle tickets for a shot at one.
Fingers crossed we can do that. B
As i could never have afforded any of the guitars that were in the "Big Boy" (apologies to Tamar!), i will hopefully manage to convince one of my favourite Officially Unofficial entrants to let me buy their creation, as it would be cool to have at least something that resulted from this brilliant idea,
A lot of people would buy $100 in raffle tickets
@@jimmusson I certainly would. In fact I was all lined up to do so, then the changed the rules, again. :( I _get it,_ it was a legal issue, but it's a shame.
Great idea
Amazing undiscovered talent in this wonderful community and seeing this develop into an annual event
👍✌😎
You ROCK!
Congrats Ben! Wonderful contest! Great people too... a bit surprised that Chris and the other guy won!
Cheers!
Saludos desde Puerto Rico. Para mi tu guitarra fué la mejor. To win in 2021.
Establish for next year, the rule that the guitar body that you provide is the one that must be used.
Yeah.. I think that may be a good idea... B
So much creativity - spawned by the King (Crimson) himself - the guitar world owes all of you a big THANKS!!!!!!!!
Congratulations everyone! What an amazing charitable contribution?! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I cannot wait for 2021 👏👏👏👏👏👏 you are all amazing people ❤️🎸
Thumbs up to all involved. Great sentiments behind the builds and a cool way to bring the community together 👍
A fantastic montage. I really love the horologically influenced hardware finishing on Ben's guitar. And the finish on Phil McKnight's build? Stunning 😍
Everyone did great... I really liked Tamars Build the best visually.
Watching all the videos has been fantastic, I hope you are going to take nominations for channels for the 2021 GGBO. So many great builders discovered off the back of this competition.
Well done Ben 🤘you should be proud of yourself for starting all this off 👍
Loved the competition. Some really inventive designs and builds. Great job raising so much for charities. Looking forward to the GGBO 2021
oh man that triple neck weapon from Texas Toast!!!!!! CRASS and CRAZY I love it!!!
This was a lot of fun to watch and raised a lot of money for some great charities. A shining spot in an otherwise weird year!!!!
I built my own first guitar during this! It came out so much better than I thought it would. so cool, anyone can do it.
Derek Lenerd’s T-Style was my favorite, the flame top was just stunning! Great work to all!
Great result for all the charities and some great builds too. Good entertainment and fascinating viewing. A win all round.
Top effort Ben, really pleased to see it will happen again next year😁👍👍
All of those guitars turned amazing, great job everyone!
Here’s one thing (of many) that I have learned. When it comes time for me to buy a high end guitar, I will stay away from the big names and buy from one of these smaller builders. Fantastic work.
As long as you plan on keeping it, as unfortunately you won't get much if you decide to sell it. The used-guitar market isn't kind to small builders!
Dude that build from Dam Thompson really kicks bASS, press "B" to pay respect.
Or............
SLAP LIKE NOW!
Epico!
B
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, watching each build and getting exposed to channels I had otherwise not seen before. Great efforts all round for charity. Loving the unofficial build along entries too, so very inspiring. Looking forward to next year 👍
Unbiasedly for Ben’s industrial/medieval take on the BFG. It’d be so metal on a viking ship’s prow. Wow!
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated. Cheers and stay safe _/,,/
Without handicap she would have been 5th based on sale price and voting.. I think she should have been 1st or 2nd tbh. B
The idea and what stand behind it is great, the wave it generate within the community is supper great and I watched, enjoyed all crazy ideas and learned a lot.
Well Done !!!!
Wish you that 2021 will double itself and will be even greater success.
Who knows, maybe in a year or two I may even join it :-)
Congratulations, Matt and The Other Guy!
Thanks Andy
Great competition, I looked foreword to all the new videos as they came out.
Ben has to be my favorite single neck. Fearless in design and unbelievable patience in execution.
Texas Toast brought a gun to a knife fight, clearly, and deserved the win.
Kudos to all involved, it has been awesome!
Thanks for it, it was a great thing, charity first with the fantastic work of many talented people, NICE!!!!
congratz to everyone involved for raising the money for their respective charities and to Texas Toast for winning the competition, I loved watching all the videos of the builds, great work Crimson Guitars for putting this all together, can't wait for next years great guitar build off challenge.
Loved all the builds. Can't wait to see the next GGBO. Great job everyone!
What a great initiative Ben. Fantastic Result. Can't wait for new years eve now. Some real cracking efforts and results guitar wise.
Kinda surprised Tamar Hannah wasn't a bit higher, that was a gorgeous guitar, and the video where she fixed that initial mistake was so inspiring.
You are all fantastic. Great fun. Can't wait to see next year.
Diresta has made some amazing guitars, I really feel like he phoned this one in
In the "making it" podcast he didnt sound really happy about his build. But he said he had timeproblems and he build 3-4 day before the competition ended.
Well done to everyone, substantial amount of money raised for good causes - roll on The Great Guitar Build Off 2021
Wow, So good! I really enjoyed watching along the way.
