Great video guys I’m from the Netherlands and envy you guys with all that opportunity around the corner to ride the most amazing trails … it the rain is not changing the dirt into unridable mud, I first have to ride to south of France or even better Spain or Portugal, or even further away the Balkan or Turkey. Locally we have the TET-Routes that get’s you away from the highway. That’s why I’m riding a KTM 890 Adv-R to do al the boring Highway or Main roads to go to my destination to have some fun in the dirt. I hope that the manufactures finally waking up, and bring a 500cc Twin that is light and is capable in the dirt like the KTM EXC 500 ADV bike that is build. Again great job, and thanks for all the details shown, that is very helpful.
Only issue with the 500 is the inadequate sealing of the air box. I’ve done everything to mine and it’s the best bike I’ve ridden in recent years. Look up rtwPaul on Advrider on his world trip, currently 800 hrs/50,000 km and KTM mechanics recommended a top end job in 250 hrs. So much for all the uninformed KTM haters. Aussie Keith Jobson has a good site and just did his 200 hr review. Forget about the porky dud suspended CRF300, get a 106 kg 500. As for gearing, I’ve had 15/42 for highway travel but 15/47 is my choice although I don’t tackle tough stuff now. One thing, add extra fuel filters. I run a cap filter, aftermarket in-tank filter and a zipty racing filter before the injector. And make sure you know how to replace a fuel pump and carry a spare. Easiest bike to maintain ever. No need for an xtrig expensive shock adjuster, a simple hook tool will do it in no time. Make your own lighting tower, I’ve done it and my lights are better than an 890 Rally.
@@ivanmessina it’s not really a tower. I made my own led light system and surrounded it in a cheap Yamaha shroud then added my own screen over it. It works quite well and allows air to come up the shroud and flow behind the screen. That is one of the keys to eliminating buffeting and back pressure.

A few years back I decided that I really missed the practicality of dual-purpose bikes, I bought a 690 and fell head over heels in love. And then, tragedy struck. Can't beat an exc for serious off road adv riding.my crew are on exc 525,450,350,150 and a husky 501 and they are amazing fun on gravel back roads and will go anywhere that a bike can go!
I've got both bikes, a 21 300L and a 22 500 exc. Got the EXC because 1) after loading all my gear up for camping/adv, the weight of the ktm becomes the same weight of the 300L bare bones; 2) for safety on the highway, I want to be able to overtake vehicles and hit ~90mph if necessary - on the trail I want the 500's low end power to use for slow/safer hill climbs without requiring the momentum/speed required to do the same on the smaller engine 300L; 3) the ktm handles nimbly like a heavy mountain bike - it's way safer in the gnar gnar; 4) the ktm is balls to the wall fun fun fun in the dirt. Both bikes need seat upgrades, suspension upgrades (at least the ktm for adv and with my fat ass) and rear rack kits, bigger tanks, and the usual protection. I like the honda, but paying more to also get the ktm was the best decision I've made so far. I won't let friends and family on the 300L in the dirt with me (not gravel roads but real world single track with high exposure) until I get the red's suspension upgraded - it's too dangerous otherwise. Love this channel, you guys do great work thanks for keeping it fun and real!
Yeah we know that. That's Mark's first long stay in front of the camera and clearly he hadn't prepared anything. Some have said he didn't even know his own bike :).
I have a very similar build to this on an 2012 EXC 500. Personally 3000 miles (4850 kilometers ish) is ok for an oil change if your doing light adventure riding. The engine is designed for racing so oil changes as per book is formed around harsh riding.
Y’all crack me the hell up. First ole son draining his lizard in the background then you ratting your buddy out on all his gucci parts! I feel you man, I’ve been adventurizing my 14’ KTM exc and if she saw the list she’d leave me. Awesome build buddy! He also had a after market Crush washer on his front sprocket I believe, mine was pissing oil from the oem not long ago, good cheap part to replace if not!
Nice build. First company that builds a 38-40hp adventurized truly lightweight thumper will have T7 sales numbers. I agree with Nugget, I would like passenger pegs to be able to take the wife on occasion. My one complaint with my 450L.
@@mikeisland7382 that's my plan. We can't both ride on my CRF300L Rally long distance so I'm selling my overland rig and getting an Africa Twin Adventure Sport MT so she can ride along on for 1,400 mile trips to Colorado and back. She's all for it!
As good of a engine as you can get for throttle response and torque the Ktm 500s ergonomics and comfort are those of a big trail bike like u said dave. These bikes have incredible power that's delivered faster than the wheels can turn. If KTM put a bike together like this that is more comfortable, not as heavy as the 790 890 it would be a hot seller. All he needs is some Acerbis Z mud fork protectors, a better acerbis muffler heat shield and a extra bracket under mudguard to strengthen the back end and it is a stealth 70% trail bike and 30% road. They do vibrate and shake alot at 110 without the balance weights like u said but I love my old 525 for riding on dirt and a little road. I have tried 3 seats and sunshine coast seats is best one by far and a airhawk on top. Great vid and run down on the best bike ever built by ktm👍🏁
I get 260klm a tank (15lt) 14/49. Best all round gearing if not hitting open roads for lengths of time. (Cross country Adventures Hungry) make the ultimate foot peg for the 500exc. Motomaster Oversized disc a must. 690r windshield on standard 500 headlight mask works really well. Rex @ Fuel Torque ecu remap brings the 500 alive. Shock treatment suspension upgrade. Done 15000klm on my 500. This bike delivers in all conditions.Have Owned all the larger bikes with plenty of klms on them. But 500 more fun.
Nice build. Ridden and camped out at Nuggets a few times. Top place and blokes. Looking into adv riding in the future. Think I will need a couple bikes :)
I still have my 1989XR600RK for that very reason and the thing is bullet proof. Just need to get out more. Great divide starts in Qld and runs to Just shy of Melbourne
Great build… but for me, If I am gonna do this, I might as well base it in a 450RL. Honda reliability. I’ve seen a lot of these builds. They’ve done a 250L with the CB500 engine build, and I say that is what Honda needs to make. It weighs 350lbs and is a twin for smoothness on the road… You could get that weight down with a 300L frame and single exhaust tube. Mini-Africa Twin would be do me! Big singles are a little too thumpy for highway cruising. IMHO
After a CRF1000, now with a Husky701E, I'm also building a 500excf for adv, that I have already riden on TET (Trans Euro Trail) for few days up to a week. Next September going to TET Greece 3000km trip. I may sell my 701 if the 500 satisfies me on a 3weeks trip (no camping, I'm too old). Already Acerbis 12liters tank, AXP bash plate, waiting for larger clutch case for more oil and comfort seat. I may think of rally tower by Nomad Adv if I sell the 701. Only 1 concern is air intake very low in case of deep (drop) river crossing .
@@glennwr450 really depends on track/technical you ride, and speed you ride it. On French TET, which "easy" overall , my 500 uses 4,3liter/100km, so 250km a 8hours day ride, reaching the gas station. In the more challenging Alps, my 500 uses 5 to 5,3 liters/100km, so 200km on 8hours day trip. I'm riding cool, otherwise, on a 2hours speedy run or real enduro race, my 500 uses more than 6liters/100km, until I get exhausted , haha (I'm 65, hard time to follow younger buddies)
Currently doing the same to an 18 500exc-f, made the mistake of riding mates new 300rally, it is so comfortable to ride on road and gravel. But I do like the power of the 500. When are we getting a crf500rally We can’t plate the new ktm500 in NZ now. All new bikes must have abs That sheepskin seat is soo sexy
the open sides of the mask would worry me if i put that on my 500, especially knowing our terrain here in UK - 500 exc for me here, so glad i got one, killer bike - 6.5k miles so far this last 11mths 🙂
Dave a little bit of info on The Great Dividing Range stretches more than 3,500 kilometres (2,175 mi) from Dauan Island in the Torres Strait off the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula, running the entire length of the eastern coastline through Queensland and New South Wales, then turning west across Victoria before finally fading into the Wimmera plains as rolling hills west of the Grampians region.
The exact reason my Mum always taught me never tell bullshit because someone always knows more than you and you will always be known as a Bullshitter 😂
Great video, please send that clever subframe brace design to someone who can make it for the 500/501 as there isn't something like that out there and it's a big obstacle in using this platform for an adventure bike, thanks.
Would be interesting to see a comparison between the CRF300L Rally, 701 Enduro, Mark's KTM500 EXC Adventure and a Adventurized WR450F eg 2017 Yamaha WR450 Adv Desert Sled by Greg Yager (rideadv). WR450F has a reliable and strong engine, a solid chassis and suspension. A true competitor in a Dual Sport/Lightweight ADV shoot out made by MAD TV. To fire it up even more add the CRF450L/RL, the all mighty DRZ400 and the king of Dual Sport DR650.
Any chance you could try review an AJP PR7? Iv only ever seen 2 in the wild and there 1 & only dealership is in Brisbane but I like the idea of it apparently it’s engine is based off the old rotax engine and would be a fair rival to this from a spec sheet point of view. Cheers
No way in the world. I have zero interest in the AJP and like you've observed everyone else has almost zero interest in them. They might be good. I don't know, but they don't interest me.
I was riding my 701 today and was thinking this bike is really sorted and on top of all of that the advanced traction control helps you keep upright on the tar, particularly when it's wet and you're tired at the end of the day.

I like that guy he’s very dry, 👍😂. Good on him, I use a husky fe501 2020 as an adventure bike, I run two specs, one for hard grade 4-5 NZ South Island trails and the Cush hub ride with a 45 T sprocket for the gravel and grade 3 longer distances. Just ordered a nomad rhino clutch casing , extra 300ml oil. I’ve been running this as alight weight adventure bike since 2020 and previous to that I modified a WR450f which I had riding as good as ya could without it being a Kim or husky.. Yeh I love light weight adventure bikes, I think the hardest bit is sourcing the added extras. Good work lads 👍
@@royward8085 That's what I thought he said to me. That said for my 500 build I'll be getting billet Adventure Bike Components Clutch Cover that will add 300 ml for oil.
KTM and Husky would sell more 500 EXCF-F - adventure/rally bikes than the 690/701 if they set them up for a light weight adventure bike as you want the light weight or you more want the bigger weight of the 890/901 the middle sized bike doesnt fit that spot right.... maybe it would if they gave it a front mount tank or changed it up abit but really thats the hardest part - do you go the bigger bikes of the tenere and the 890 but 90% of the time cant go for the 3-4 days ride best you have is an overnight on a weekend not far from home and the 500 fits that can still do long enough rides or enter into a transmoto grass event if you want to on a weekend
Omg between Dave’s soft pitches, Harold’s deadpan and Nugget’s unpredictability, this was improv comedy by gold.

I won't let friends and family on the 300L in the dirt with me (not gravel roads but real world single track with high exposure) until I get the red's suspension upgraded - it's too dangerous otherwise. Love this channel, you guys do great work thanks for keeping it fun and real!
Thank you
FROM CORAL SPRINGS FL USA .❤️❤️
Lovely bike and video!
Yeah, it's a great build. Mark did a great job.
You can get cush-drive hubs for these, pretty sure Talon in the UK does them. Ultimately you could get a cush-drive with a tubeless Excel rim.
Thanks
Light is right, love my 450 exc for fast and light! Great vid Dave 👍
Thanks 👍
Then there are the Baja 500/1000 riders ADDING weight to the frame of 450s.
More weight=more compliant.
hi Dave ! I coukd not watch to the end ! mark is the man with all the extras he wanted to hide from his wife ! good laugh !!
Ta
Hey great content and we Evan get to see the nicest man on you tube NUGGET ye ah 👍🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻👍🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Legend!
Adventure Man Cave is from Portugal, not Spain. Great product and the owner/developer is a really nice guy. Great Bike! Congrats!
Yeah we know that. That's Mark's first long stay in front of the camera and clearly he hadn't prepared anything. Some have said he didn't even know his own bike :).
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV The question is, does his wife know his bike :D.
@@andrehattingh1802 A very very good point.
I have a very similar build to this on an 2012 EXC 500. Personally 3000 miles (4850 kilometers ish) is ok for an oil change if your doing light adventure riding. The engine is designed for racing so oil changes as per book is formed around harsh riding.
Agree.
Thanks Lance! Damm I missed a part!
Nice build. First company that builds a 38-40hp adventurized truly lightweight thumper will have T7 sales numbers. I agree with Nugget, I would like passenger pegs to be able to take the wife on occasion. My one complaint with my 450L.
Axiis makes pegs for the Honda.
@@dznnf7 Thanks dznnf7. Yes you can bolt on pegs but being based off a race bike there isn't actually any space for a passenger.
Well said!
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I'll just have to be a good husband and get a second bike to take the lady out on.
Spot on Muppet
Thank you.
Great video.
Is the rally screen simple enough to remove and replace. A few of us use our 500’s as ADV bikes and trail bikes.
Thanks
Yes easy
Thanks
Great build… but for me, If I am gonna do this, I might as well base it in a 450RL. Honda reliability. I’ve seen a lot of these builds.
They’ve done a 250L with the CB500 engine build, and I say that is what Honda needs to make. It weighs 350lbs and is a twin for smoothness on the road… You could get that weight down with a 300L frame and single exhaust tube. Mini-Africa Twin would be do me!
Big singles are a little too thumpy for highway cruising. IMHO
Good ideas.
This looks great!
I do mini adventure rides on a 12 250sxf and love it! My arse isnt a big fan though!
Seat concepts!
NUGGET ❤️❤️
I see that you left the stock dash/speedo, did you use the bolts that came with the AMC Rally Tower or have to buy longer ones?
That’s Mark’s bike I have no idea
Hi Gilles, just fitted 12L tank to my 500 exc-f, how many km are you getting from that tank
I'm tempted to do a build.
So what year KTM is this? Mines a 2014, and this rally screen would be awesome.
I think it was a 2015
Currently doing the same to an 18 500exc-f, made the mistake of riding mates new 300rally, it is so comfortable to ride on road and gravel. But I do like the power of the 500. When are we getting a crf500rally
We can’t plate the new ktm500 in NZ now. All new bikes must have abs
That sheepskin seat is soo sexy
Bloody ABS rules
Any thoughts on how this rally kit compares to the Rade Garage Rally kit?
Or the Moto Minded one!?
Nope, no thoughts
the open sides of the mask would worry me if i put that on my 500, especially knowing our terrain here in UK - 500 exc for me here, so glad i got one, killer bike - 6.5k miles so far this last 11mths 🙂
a Great bike
Mate You reckon you can tell me the name of the company that build the clutch cover that your mate is using on the 500?
Nope, because he couldn't remember :) sorry but I won't see Mark for weeks.
Nice build…do you know if Aaron modified his subframe, because he was carrying a bit of weight?
I don’t think he did
Dream bike
For many.
Now that 500 EXC F is a real go anywhere bike with a enough power/suspension / to cope with everything, with out too many upgrades.
It's a great bike.
Hi, have you noticed and difference in handlebars?
That bikes belongs to Mark. It's not mine.
Someone in NZ makes a cush drive rear sprocket called a Mox sprocket. Can't find any reviews on it though.
Ta
If I piss down wind from my mojave bags they are wet inside. Have you guys found a good dry bag for inside it?
GL have dry bags.
What's the handguards on the KTM mate 👍 are they husky compatible
I don't know Mark bought them from the States.
Does Mark use the Garmin Zumo XT with that cradle? Tough enough for offroad?
Not sure. What ever it was it was giving him grief as he couldn't paste all the gpx routes together.
Ta. Well at least my 3000 was better than Nugget's 1 thouasand!
The exact reason my Mum always taught me never tell bullshit because someone always knows more than you and you will always be known as a Bullshitter 😂
Hey mate! What is the service km interval with the bigger oil capacity ? Looking to increase mine on my 450
It depends on how you ride it. But adventure miles are generally kind on the engine. I was hoping 1500 to 1800 KM.
Great video, please send that clever subframe brace design to someone who can make it for the 500/501 as there isn't something like that out there and it's a big obstacle in using this platform for an adventure bike, thanks.
Beautifully made.
Adventure Men Cave is from Portugal! You have officially committed the capital offense of confusing Portugal with Spain - no more Bacalhau for you
Would be interesting to see a comparison between the CRF300L Rally, 701 Enduro, Mark's KTM500 EXC Adventure and a Adventurized WR450F eg 2017 Yamaha WR450 Adv Desert Sled by Greg Yager (rideadv).
Now that's a lot of work :)
Adventure Man Cave are Portuguese, the lad who runs it is Ricardo Silva top lad to deal with
Thank you
Thanks mate's.
No worries!
The "wife" part made me laugh so hard... Because I'm guilty to! :D
Good.
Adventure Men Cave is from Portugal...
Gotta love nugget
He has a large fan base.
13:15 Greetings to the owners's wife from Austria!
Ha ha I'll tell Mark that.
What make are the handguards
Any chance you could try review an AJP PR7? Iv only ever seen 2 in the wild and there 1 & only dealership is in Brisbane but I like the idea of it apparently it’s engine is based off the old rotax engine and would be a fair rival to this from a spec sheet point of view. Cheers
No way in the world. I have zero interest in the AJP and like you've observed everyone else has almost zero interest in them. They might be good. I don't know, but they don't interest me.
500 is a great bike but I still see the 701/690 as the better Adv bike due to servicing constraints especially the new ones.Thanks.
I was riding my 701 today and was thinking this bike is really sorted and on top of all of that the advanced traction control helps you keep upright on the tar, particularly when it's wet and you're tired at the end of the day.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV That new 701 is a magic bike. The best of big bike and small bike.Just spend a little money on it and you are good to go.Thks
They should bring out a ktm 500 exc adventure rally with no switchable ride mode !!! & keep it lite
Agree
Where did the lamb wool seat cover come from?
A sheep :). Not sure.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV haha! OK ty. I like the idea and will have one made.
The EXC has a cush drive, look deeper (right side of engine).
Yep we know.....now. Mark certainly didn't :)
Just a note
Adventure Men Cave is a company from Portugal not Spain
Very nice mods
Yes Mark doesn't know much about his bike, nor where the parts are from :)
The tower it's from Portugal.
Yes. It would be good if Mark knew that :)
When you say crf El rally, you mean like El Camino?😁(KTM used to manufacture the mxc 525,an idea close to 500exc adventure)
Ha ha
What fuel tank do you have on it?
Acerbis I think.
Great divide starts at Warburton Victoria

is there a link to the Adventure men cave tower. I want to buy one for my Husky 501
I could only find them on Facebook ;-)
Contact them on FB messenger they will respond and USA and Aus contact sellers. Approx 600 euro.
Yes Facebook
its a portuguese company not a spanish one... just to let you know. :)
@@xau Thank you.
Aw jeez… now you’ve got me thinking about selling three bikes and modding a KTM 500 out for ADV riding.
Trouble makers!
Trouble is our second name.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV The best kind of trouble. 👍
Front rally fairing from which company ????
It's shown on the video. You need to go to spec savers.
I am toying with selling my 690to get one of these. Now I'm sold
Yeah it is tempting.
😂👍🤙💪😎
Adventure Men Cave and AJP motorcycles are from Portugal

It would be so easy for ktm or any of the euro bikes to make a rally /adventure kit for the 450 or 500 and they would sell buckets off them.
Yep agree.
Thanks for your contribution.
Great build! Adventure Men Cave its from Portugal not Spain
Thank you.
what brand is the billet clutch cover please
Rekluse
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTVthank you
on the 500 it doesn't look like a rekluse?
@@royward8085 That's what I thought he said to me. That said for my 500 build I'll be getting billet Adventure Bike Components Clutch Cover that will add 300 ml for oil.
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV thanks
Flexible!
Can we get vid of the wife reacting to all the mods/standard part that she didn't know a bout
Now that would be an excellent addition.
I don’t see that bike getting over 400ks to that 17l tank. A bit of gst and mayo added there I reckon.
True mine only gets about 350!
Good to know.
