Stop worrying so much about what means of transport you have. The motorbike is for daily trips and for adventure trips. Not to outdo your mates or to show off...Take care of it, but don't worry about trifles!

I just purchased the triumph speed 400. I’ve been riding 22 years, I have owned big 1500cc cruisers. I test road the 400, and It’s my favorite bike I have ever ridden. For the price, and my age, it’s perfect. I pick mine up Saturday. Speed isn’t everything.

    Hi Freddie,
I test rode the 400x it's a quality bike but just didn't do it for me at all.
Sold my himalayan, which I preferred to the triumph and bought the classic 350 without a test ride(decided on looks and quality alone)
This little bike has stolen my heart & soul, can't ask for more than that! Love my little "Ruby"
Keep up the great work you two. Just keeps getting better & better.

Yes, very uncomfortable viewing. A scheming shyster of the highest order. Proof if anyone was in doubt that the legal system is an ass. And he’s by far not the only one to have stolen millions. The hyperbole around Norton at the time was excruciating. The best outcome would have been to put the tainted brand to bed permanently. I have zero interest in an offshore owned and backed “heritage” brand that’s just a name.

I bought an MT07 in 2021. I saw all the videos about it and it was the bike to have at the time. I sat on the Ninja 400 and it fit me great because of the size and the weight. I often wondered how the 400 would have felt in the curves after a day of riding the MT07 in those curves. I wasn't disappointed but that thought was still in the back of my mind. So when the ZX4RR came out I wanted one. Still unsure about a new model I weighted for about 9 months. I was at the dealership one day and they had one. I was so tired of the sound of the parallel twin and wanted an in line 4 so bad. I even contemplated a ZX6R even though I would never have used most of the power of that bike. I even sat on one and it was just too tall. It was a beautiful all black bike. I had to take a picture of it. The second time I went back to the dealers I was going to buy it, then I saw they had the ZX4RR. I traded in the MT07 right there and then. I've been so happy with it, that I'm riding it every day, if I can, since buying it in November. Joy, joy.

Freddie, your enthusiasm, positive outlook, and passion for biking in all forms is infectious. I really enjoy both of your RUclips channels even though the bikes and riding are completely unlike what I have myself (I ride a 2000 BMW R1150GS and a 2018 BMW R1200GS in the countryside of Southeast Texas and consider myself very fortunate to have those bikes and the access to rural riding compared to what many people have). Nor would I want to take a 3-4 week trip to India or Sri Lanka. I spent a year as a 11-12 year old living in Lahore, Pakistan back around 1964 and that was enough of that sort of experience. If a monitor lizard had taken an interest in me and approached like that one did with you and Monika I think I would have left the country on the next thing smoking.

Excellent vid once again and a sublime selection of features. The R12 9T really gets my goat! It's heavy, air cooled (ie as basic as can be) and the BASE model, without necessary adornments, is £14.5k. Give me 3x Triumph 400s any day, for the price. BMW should get Stuart Gardner as CEO. A perfect fit.

    Mr. Dobbs,
Just a quick word from a fellow motorcycle gentleman - this one from Sydney (AUS).
    My garage is as follows:
    2011 BMW R1200GS
    2020 BMW G310GS
    2021 KTM 1290 Adventure S
    And, my pride and joy:
    2022 Vespa GTS 150
I've ridden across Australia, USA, Mexico, and Peru - all on large capacity motorcycles.
The Vespa brings me so much joy for the same reasons as REs do for you - heritage looks (and relative heritage performance).
Whilst your Triumph Bonneville will likely always be "your motorcycle" I hope that a Classic 350 finds a permanent place in your garage so that you may have that deep connection to a motorcycle - just like I do with my little black wasp.
    Cheers,
    Cameron

I remember my motorcycle driving test back in the 70's. Cones were set up on the street. I was ready, but my horn didn't work. He didn't let me test. Off I went and rode a perfect 2nd gear wheelie down the street. I saw him watching intently in my mirror. Next test after horn was fixed, he didn't even check my horn. He simply signed off on my paper and told me I didn't need to ride through the cones.

I saw this coming. The Speed 400 is everyone's fun little everyday/weekend bike. It's not going to take you comfortably cross country, but it's great for riding to work or just having a great Sunday morning ride. Brilliant! I'd own one.
Passed my road test the first time on my RD400C. They put me down for "poor clutch control", but on a 2 stroke, you have to play with the clutch at low speeds or the bike will surge and buck.

Freddy, I've said it before and I'll happily go on record once again... To me, it was the Vit/Svartpilen 401 that, 6 years ago, paved the way for standard / naked bike fans eager to try out how seemingly negligible displacements can still be matched with a solid power to weight ratio and ensure tons of fun. Of course, one might always argue that the OG Duke 390 was really the one to blame in the first place - and it did indeed set off an absolute frenzy in thee

Advice for Clair. If your dream is a Speed Twin 900. Don't wait go get one. Not having ridden a bike for 30 years, I did my basic skills test and got my learners permit. My Dream was a Bonneville I was worried a 900 might be to big and powerful. I stopped in at a Triumph Dealer the next morning. They had a Red 2018 Street Twin. It looked like the bike I had been dreaming off. I rode it home. It was a really nice easy bike to ride and gain experience on. You wont regret a Speed Twin 900 or a Used Street Twin if you can find one. They are really popular.

Do they still allow more room in the cone test for scooters? I remember finding it quite tight doing my test but thankfully passed and the guy sitting the test on his scooter passed too but they widened the cones for him significantly. Might be an option for Davide - not saying you need to find a way around multiple fails but we all know that passing your bike test is only the beginning of learning to ride.

If you wanted a RE Classic 350, you won't want a Triumph 400 - with very little character, comparably. I really can't see how you've put them side by side, Freddie; the phrase "chalk and cheese" springs to mind. Classic riders don't buy for the BHP (I'm not one, by the way).

Yes that’s a big power reduction but I love the look of the 400 X and don’t ride particularly fast. I took the 400 X for a test ride on Saturday, really enjoyed the bike but really missed the build quality of the BMW. Also there has been a lot of quality issues with the 400 X, oil leaks, bad paint, immobiliser issues to name a few. I’ve decided to keep the BMW for now and maybe consider something else next year.

Freddie I have a question. Why would anybody buy a brand new bike? You talked about the new 400 Triumph for $5k or the Enfield 350 for 450 less. But here in the good old USA, you could buy a used Sportster probably with under 20k miles for 3-5k. It would be a 1000 or most likely a 1200cc that would be the old style motor and would be reliable and resale would get you most or all of your money back. Is the triumph or Enfield small displacement bike gonna hold valve? Dude you just can’t beat a lot of cc’s. I know across the pond Harley’s aren’t that cheap, but life’s to short to ride a little bike.

For me the Bonnieville is the bike that you say to yourself "I only need this bike everything else is just excessive".

The Triumph 400 isn't a bad looking bike & power-wise smokes the RE, but only the RE looks that cool, like the olden days, when I was young, when women wanted me & men wanted to be like me, etc....

RE Have to de-restrict the classic 350 for the EU Market as they do in Brazil with an ECU flash or Triumph are going to leave them in the dust. 70ish mph top whack is just not safe for overtakes and holding with faster traffic on EU motorways, the Classic has the potential for 80mph, it'll always be down on power beside these but with 80mph available and, to my mind at least, far more authentic classic charm I think the little 350 can still compete for sales but only if RE pull their finger out.

I think that the Speed 400 and the Classic are aimed at diferent demographics, Triumph may say that the 400 is a retro design but in reality it ain't. The backend looks as though the designers lost interest when they got past the seat and just settled for the least attractive design they had. You'll have to take a trip downunder Freddy, no licence worries, no long queues at counters and plenty of open space and, as you may have noticed we do things in a more relaxed way here. Mind you it would take a good month just to do Queensland and NSW. 🙂

I have been to see the Triumph 400’s, they did nothing for me, they seem to have no personality. I think it is just re rebadged Bajaj. The 350 Classic on the other hand has loads of character. Very soon RE will be releasing the Hunter 450 which I feel will be worth waiting for.

Caveat on dream bikes, most shouldn’t buy their dream bike as your first or maybe even second bike, especially if it’s a 140 HP monster you will probably total within a week. It’s ok to own a few cheaper bikes before your dream bike

I like the Triumph 400 Speed Twin. But won’t buy it, its seat height is too high, for me. The 900 speed twin sits marginally lower. (More feet on the ground)
Am 5 foot 4 with 27 inch inside leg. That’s my problem, together with abdominal issues.
I own the 350 Meteor, and got the seat insides changed it’s now 30mm lower.😊
I also own the Honda Rebel 500, as it’s 690mm seat, I can flat foot it, thus giving me much more confidence.
I would have the Triumph if it was 30mm lower

holy shi7 that triumph rider was lucky if he was on that bike, that is disgusting driving and i hope the payout was HUGE ! I also reckon he was talking about a Himmy and not a classic 350, the Himmy is somewhat comparable to the 400x, the 350 is not.

Hello Freddie - I hope you are well. I clicked on this video because I test rode a Triumph 400. I was away from home, saw Triumph offering test rides on FaceBook marketing, and thought - why not, its an OK looking bike. My bike is a Suzuki gsx-f 650. With that in mind, I was really disappointed with the Triumph. It was really quite flat at low RPM and very "snatchy" when it got into high RPM. It was lightweight, but even without much bulk, the brakes were also (in my view) just mediocre. Overall, although it rode nicely, there just wasn't anything special about it at all, and were it not for your video, I'd probably have never thought about it again. Boring. Hey ho - everyone is different, we can't all like the same thing :-) Best regards, Lisa

Then and only then will you realize what this company is all about and trust me you will need parts and a lot of them. Not impressed with the garage that installed your cam just making your owm marks is grossly inaccurate, correctly timed you may have better performance. If I had used marks to put it back as original installation it would be 4° retarded as it was incorrectly timed from factory. Using the cam setting tool along with the tdc tool is how it should be done. Ps the times I'm getting are far better than yours.
