Awesome Dan! -plus 3 here now but still two feet if snow. Will test the mini Speed 400,but for now (as a Speed Twin 1200 owner) I’m not focused on the lower end. The new Tiger though….
I so wanted to like this bike but after a test ride yesterday I think I'm going to ask for my deposit back. It looks great, the engine is punchy for a 400 single but i just didn't like the front end. The suspension felt overly firm to the point of being uncomfortable on Britain's broken roads and it felt slightly heavy steering as though an oversized front tyre was fitted. I found the throttle sensitive just off idle but that's all too common on todays bikes desperately trying to hit emission targets. Ultimately the bike felt as though development was only 90% complete and it had a slight unfinished, rough feel to it. Next one for to try will be the new Himalayan, perhaps that's going to be my next bike.
@@BikingChap regarding your thoughts on the suspension I disagree, I think the suspension is really perfect for a “budget” bike in fact it’s better than most of the bikes I’ve owned. I can’t fault it. I’m 77kg and it seems like a custom suspension tune. But I’ve never ridden cruiser bikes so can’t compare there.

Wheel size, brake size tyre size and brand, sprocket size difference, handlebar difference, suspension difference (extra 1cm travel), seat is two piece, exhaust end can difference - Is all that worth £600 difference? maybe. I dunno.
If I had a situation where I could get significant offroad use - yes. As it is where I would be completely on-road - no. I will bet though the scrambler outsells the Speed because it looks cooler.
I had the Honda for 3 years and if she had more torque and also 40 hp I would never have sold her. It's the most nimble bike, pretty much a 125 with a big engine, great for town use. I sat today on the speed, and it felt like the little fat cousin, but have to ride her first to get to a conclusion.
or the RE Scram 452 but RE are going to have to put it on a diet to compete on weight with either in your shortlist. Scram 411s only a few kg lighter than Himmy 411 so it might still be lardy compared to the 400x or the Huskie 401 when it finally arrives. Adjustable suspension on the '24 svartpilen might swing for me [i like my 390 adv suspenders even if the looks leave me cold]. Test rides will tell. Some 400x reviews claim harsh suspension and heavy handling, some the opposite so i guess I need to book a day out of work for back to back demo rides to make my own opinion when its dryer/warmer. oh the sacrifices we all make 😊
@@sp33d35I would say that the 400x handles better than the drz400sm, different size front wheels. The 400x is less twitchy at higher speeds and is absolutely perfect for spirited highway city commuting.
agree. kinda. depends on what type of offroad you do and where. Most offroad bikers prefer lower down pull and lower wet weight over everything else. The 400x seems to win on those counts based on Indian reviews but I cant validate that myself. I will try both. The RE has a bigger front wheel and i think more travel neither really make much difference for my type of mild green laning [grass, mud and tractor ruts. If you want a faired ADV or need to traverse rocks the Himmy is gonna have an advantage. Personally, I would take the lightest bike that was a best fit for where i will [if honest to myself] will spend most time (potholed B roads, back lanes and the occaisional BoAT twin track when curious/lost). oh and tubless tyres. too old to faff around with tubes miles from anywhere.

5 foot 7" and a smidge and only 29" inseam [long body] but my parents paid for the Napolean complex addon when I was commisioned. I pity those string beans that are forced to ride r1200GS, larger KTMs and Ducati DesertXs just to stop themselves looking like circus clowns on normal bikes 😊 I sat on a 400x in the, feels easily managable compared to my current 855mm seat KTM 390 adv. as weight is light/low.
@@sp33d35 I'm a 29 inseam too and found the scrambler 400 well within my reach, nice bike, I have one on order. Thanks for joining in the fun banter today. 🙂👍
I'm not sure if the service intervals are a bit of a smoke screen thing, given I personally would not be leaving the oil in for a year or if you are riding a shed load and get to the 10,000 miles in less than a year, say 9 months, same applies, would you really trust it for that length of time or milage, OK fully synthetic oil might be OK but I feel most owners would change it and the filter at no more than 5,000 😉
I'd do it every 3,500 just like a car, regardless of what the manual says. Probably gonna wanna clean the air filter and lube/adjust the chain at least that often, so might as well do oil and filter at the same time.
It looks good, but I am not a Triumph fan even though they are English. Despite being a patriotic type, I'd rather have a Fantic Caballero Scrambler 500 [449cc]. It also looks better than this Triumph to me. I'm keeping my KTM 390 Duke Mk 2. Lighter than the Triumph. Superb handler. It's my second bike in Chiang Rai behind my Yamaha SCR950. Although, I use my Yamaha Aerox 155 twist and go on a daily basis. Good review, Dan. Nick
These new Triumph 400s seem nice but I have a serious bone of contention - no centre stands! Royal Enfield has managed to get them on every platform in its range, why can't Triumph?
It's to maintain the road clearance. Giving a centre stand will eat into it which wouldn't make it much of a scrambler on Indian roads with speed breakers. They might offer it as an accessory.
@@Sahu6492 most adventure bikes and many scramblers (including other Triumph Ccramblers) have a centre stand option - this doesn't seem to. The Scrambler 400X has less ground clearance than a Himalayan 411 or 452 - the Himis come with a centre stand.
Personally, I dont get the appeal of centerstands. They make sense on a long distance tourer or adventure bike where you expect to be doing a lot of maintenance on the side of the road. But on a low maintenance, lightweight bike like this I don't see the point? When you're out and about the kickstand works fine and when you're at home doing maintenance twice a year, you can just use a bike stand in your garage.
Limiter is approx 9100 rpms, I did audio check on another video hitting the limiter. You would think that knowing the peak power is at 8K would make the presenter realize the overrun limiter is not 12k.
All the 400X test are on tar....does'nt anyone go OPFFROADS ?i.e. gravel roads ? What about engine protection when falling down ? C'mon someone...give us an OFF ROAD test !!!
Sorry but watching you ride a new bike with no respect of the fact it hadn’t been run in made me cringe!!!! I wouldn’t be surprised if if you find trouble getting dealerships giving you future bikes.
Ah, that's just ruined it for me. 845mm seat height?????? on a 400???? Just because it's supposed to be a "scrambler". 800mm is my max for my leg length. I'm not going to all the hassle of getting one of these things lowered just because it's a "scrambler". USELESS. Make a lower seat height version Triumph!!!! And I mean THIS bike, not another stupid feet forward 'cruiser' version of it. I'm not interested in cruisers, I like THIS bike
Alex if I was you I'd go and have a sit on one. The seat height is actually 835mm and I like you usually prefer a seat height max of 800 but I could touch the floor no problem 🙂 which surprised me. The street does have a lower height of 790 mm. 🙂
It got 835mm of seat height 901mm of width of handlebars 195mm of ground clearance 150mm of suspension travel manufactured by a company called endurance in India.

Hi, what is the your code for the phone case? Thanks.
EBD10
Thank you...good job on the content...that's what she said. lol cheers
All new engine from triumph according to the brochure. In reality it’s essentially the bajaj / new ktm390 duke engine.
dual front disk will look nicer
Would be overkill for a 40 hp single.
@@RRP1992exactly, and raises the cost 😊
Yeah, would look cooler for sure.
Berkshire roads?
Yes indeed.
I'd like to see a comparison of this bike with the new 2024 Husqvarna 401
or the RE Scram 452 but RE are going to have to put it on a diet to compete on weight with either in your shortlist.
The 400x is less twitchy at higher speeds and is absolutely perfect for spirited highway city commuting.
looks cool & sounds cool. speedo is a bit naff though.
Cheap bike, cheap speedo, I guess.
unrelated to today's video but does anyone know when triumph is going to send out some daytona 660's for youtubers to make videos on?
Not sure, I think I'll probably be able to ride one from the dealer before I would be able to from Triumph UK. As soon as I can, you'll see it here.
@@Englishbikerdan very much looking forward to it!
한국에서 영상 잘봤다 고맙다😊
Hi Dan, would you recommend this bike as an entry level ride? I’m 194cm so I need to also consider that. Thanks a lot
Absolutely.
Similar price point to Himalayan.
More road oriented of the two.
agree. kinda. depends on what type of offroad you do and where.
Funny Ride 😂
As a 5' 5" and a 'smidgey' bit not so tall guy ( never forget that smidgey bit 😂 )..I will never understand..'WHY' do people think 5' 8" is 'short'. That's 'our' word..leave it out 😂😂😂😂😂...average more like. Loved the video all the same. Subscribed 👍🙂
I'm 5ft 9 and I feel short.
Everybody is taller than me 😀
@@letni9506 🤔🤔🤔 look again...but this time..look 'down' 😂😂😂👍
5 foot 7" and a smidge and only 29" inseam [long body] but my parents paid for the Napolean complex addon when I was commisioned.
All my friends over over 6 foot. I need new friends! Thanks for the sub mate! Appreciated! 💪
Nice bike. Cockpit is dated though. It's not a classic display, just 15 years behind.
I regard that as a good thing. I don't want a motorcycle that I can log into with my cellphone.
Price means they have to make some concessions. You can't have it all.
Would you rather have a Triumph 400x or Honda 500x?
Honda 500X.
@@Englishbikerdan Can you elaborate on the answer? I'm shopping for a first larger (than 50cc) bike
I'll guarantee you that those front forks are not showa 😏
Skoda what now?
Ahem, 😂
Royal Enfield has managed to get them on every platform in its range, why can't Triumph?
my royal enfield gt650 did not come with a center stand.
@@notstevelam but the Interceptor 650 which is based on the same platform does. Like I said, every platform has a centre stand available.
Thanks, but no thnaks, i'll be choosing the Honda CB500F
This is the great thing about having so much choice! Enjoy the 500!
@@Englishbikerdan Which one of those two would you choose personally?
Nice Bajaj 400.
The 400 platform is so interesting, I do wonder if they could cobble together a daytona style small sport bike or a small adventure, like KTM has
I would be betting there will be a faired version and a Tiger 400 in the future.
Change the gear bro at 70.
Did you say redline at 12000 rpm? Lol.
Limiter is approx 9100 rpms, I did audio check on another video hitting the limiter. You would think that knowing the peak power is at 8K would make the presenter realize the overrun limiter is not 12k.
We'll that's what the speedo would indicate, but probably not accurate! I'm not no expert here, just a normal dude who likes arsing about on bikes. 😀
It is basically a KTM 390 engine. Lol
Certainly similar. No bad thing either.
No they are different engines,
All the 400X test are on tar....does'nt anyone go OPFFROADS ?i.e. gravel roads ? What about engine protection when falling down ? C'mon someone...give us an OFF ROAD test !!!
Plastic bash plate with the coolant directly behind that plastic plate.
Revzilla channel take both 400's off road up the highest road in India.
Nathanthepostman has just done one
@@realstevieb7201 yep, watched it, he's always good with a review.
As soon as I can get a press bike, yes. But that's probably going to be spring.
Sounds like a murray walker imoression at times. Not ever so relaxing.
I'm honoured to be in such esteemed company.
Can't do with a vibey motor - very annoying.
Nah.... love a motor with character and that means vibes.
Sorry but watching you ride a new bike with no respect of the fact it hadn’t been run in made me cringe!!!!
I wouldn’t be surprised if if you find trouble getting dealerships giving you future bikes.
You really think demo bikes are ridden slowly by riders? 😂
It's a really nice looking bike, except for those horrible golden fork legs. What a shame about those, what were you thinking, Triumph?
Any other Scrambler 400 x owners here? ☺️
Go for the Speed 400
Alex if I was you I'd go and have a sit on one. The seat height is actually 835mm and I like you usually prefer a seat height max of 800 but I could touch the floor no problem 🙂 which surprised me. The street does have a lower height of 790 mm. 🙂
It got 835mm of seat height
901mm of width of handlebars
195mm of ground clearance
150mm of suspension travel manufactured by a company called endurance in India.
You can't lower this bike, because it doesn't have a rear shock with linkage!
@@Englishbikerdan Just checked the speed 400. Looks identical (cool!) So what's with the different seat height??? different suspension settings? frame and seat are the same.... ???
Gold forks being a treno, it actually doesn’t fit this bikes color scheme and style.
I agree
Actually, this bike is a choice. Honda NX(?)500, Transalp……..I live in the mountains and, whilst there are some open roads that need accounting for, it’s the tracks that beckon. This bike needs to be taken off road for a sizing I think. Otherwise it’s a fun commuter on current assessment.
