Luffy going after the vivre card kinda makes sense here. He's already super exhausted, having kept going for days, cheating his body with Iva's adrenaline boost way past its limits. And this is where the adrenaline ran out. So Luffy's pretty much delirious with exhaustion, and sees the important thing Ace told him to always carry fall. Of course he'd reach for it.
I've never seen her so devastated, haha. I actually love Luffy's reaction to this. Because One Piece is this world of insanely resilient people, they're insanely hard to kill, even when people explode they're still alive, and Luffy has always saved people as long as he was there, he felt like he could do something and never experienced a proper loss, typical shonen hero, right? But the fact that he lost the person closest to him, despite being there and trying everything to save him, he still fails, he just completely breaks because his brain can't handle it. It's amazing.

The masterpiece: Created a character loved by everyone with hardly any appearance and then giving him an end that makes fans cry seas and oceans. Only in One Piece.
Fun fact: people told oda that he shouldn’t kill off ace because they were selling a lot of ace merch. Oda definitely made this anime make you think the unthinkable. Honestly, I think that’s what great! Because it’s not “oh great he’s saved, let’s go home now.” Which makes those sad moments that happen hit home.
Tbh, I also cry every time I rewatch it. Garp tears me up every time, because he stands between his duty (which he fully believes in) and his family. It's hardbreaking to see him step in, because you know how much it pains him to do it. These flashbacks actually served a phenomenal purpose.
I appreciate how they touched on why Ace did this later on, with Garp talking about even in the face of the greatest dangers, Roger would never turn his back, because his crew was behind him.
This part was spoiled for me before I watched One Piece but that didn’t make it any less sad when I was watching this part, Ace is my fav character of all time and this part will always make me tear up any time I see it or even think about it 😔
When Luffy cries you cry too cause he's such a positive and dense character so when he cries you just can't help but feel for him and cry with him such a powerful show

I once read someone saying that, unlike other protagonists, Luffy really lost faith in himself and that what made post-marineford so heartbreaking was to see this usually goofy, optimistic and joyful character completely broken by grief, self-doubt and self-contempt. Yes, Naruto went through his own process when Jiraiya died but Luffy had it harder imo, starting for the fact that he saw it all happening and went through hell (almost literally) to rescue his brother. I dare say that if One Piece had different artwork style, let's say like Berserk's, it would strike as a dark manga.

It wasn't luffy fault for grabbing the vivre card. Luffy was already fully out of energy. It was Ace fault for turning to fight instead of leaving. And he could hurt ace because Ace was trying to defend luffy. If Akainu punched through him then he would have hit luffy. But ace used his body to shield him.
yeah..oda used his hot head personality to tell a great story rather then the easy way out..he basically proved ace was dammned but is hard to hate cause he saved luffy after making people mad

Dude i hate when people say it was over the paper. It wasn’t even luffy didn’t reach down for the paper he was still standing there and I doubt luffy was faster than akainu. Also ace shouldn’t have let akainu get to him he thought more about whitebeards name than what everyone just did for him at the moment. I’m not mad at him for that and I was devastated but you can’t blame luffy.

When Ace died it made me cry but I knew that when he died he was an important plot point for Luffy to try and get stronger so he can protect his Nakama as well as give him the first person he genuinely hates, Sakazuki.

There's only a handful of times that a show legit hit me in the feels, got me choked up, teary eyed, etc. One Piece and HunterXHunter are the only ones that had moments that really hit hard. Everything else is basically "that sucks" and might be a little irritated. When something goes, changes, or is lost on One Piece, you feel it. A character's reaction is felt even if the animation is exaggerated because you know the character. Who they were, what they went through, who they are now, and overall what could destroy them emotionally. Filler stuff aside, the most accomplished writers of a generation have been in anime like One Piece.

To me, how I rationalized it is I don't view it as Luffy's mistake for going for the vivre card - it is Ace's own fault for letting Akainu's trash talks going into his head. Akainu, at least to me, was clearly trying to provoke Ace, and Ace fell for it, resulting in putting Whitebeard's and his crewmates' sacrifices in vein.
@@godelemender8009 he couldn't dodge cuz he was out of stamina. He had been fighting nonstop for a few days so he collapsed from exhaustion. So even if he hadn't gone for the card ace woulda died.
@@kentaro5121 I doubt he fought for days Luffy’s stamina doesn’t last that long most his battles are short but they seem long because it’s episodes and there’s a lot of flashbacks and other extra stuff Marineford at best was probably a few hours but definitely not a few days but it seemed like Luffy had a lot of energy to continue moving he probably didn’t notice Akainu launching at him until the last second before Ace took the hit

To me, how I rationalized it is I don't view it as Luffy's mistake for going for the vivre card - it is Ace's own fault for letting Akainu's trash talks going into his head. Akainu, at least to me, was clearly trying to provoke Ace, and Ace fell for it, resulting in putting Whitebeard's and his crewmates' sacrifices in vein.

@@godelemender8009 he couldn't dodge cuz he was out of stamina. He had been fighting nonstop for a few days so he collapsed from exhaustion. So even if he hadn't gone for the card ace woulda died.

Luffy’s stamina doesn’t last that long most his battles are short but they seem long because it’s episodes and there’s a lot of flashbacks and other extra stuff Marineford at best was probably a few hours but definitely not a few days but it seemed like Luffy had a lot of energy to continue moving he probably didn’t notice Akainu launching at him until the last second before Ace took the hit
