If Luffy and Co. can grow why not Crocodile? He’s dangerous because of his intelligence and now he’s got more strength to enact his goals.

Alabasta was the arc where I truly got invested into one piece and it was pretty much all due to crocodile. He was so ominous and cold. It was the first time I thought that the Straw Hats path to achieving Luffy’s goals in particular really wasn’t going to be easy as he genuinely posed a real threat to the Straw Hats, so I feel like Crocodile set a gold standard in some ways for a good one piece villain in my eyes.

Crocodile has that effect that people looking back on the series may mistakenly say that he's not that special of a villain, but its because they forget that he's the one that DEFINED what a great One Piece villian is, there was no one like him before him, and the greats that came after took his template and made improvements

I think he is either a former slave saved by the Revolutionary Army and is a secret associate or he's the maternal uncle of Luffy (Luffy's mum's brother). Oda has stated out of all the characters in OP a young Crocodile was the most similar to Luffy personality wise. • @Rubberman202
    @Rubberman202 5 месяцев назад +28

There's a reason why Crocodile remains one of the most popular One Piece characters even to this day, he left a REALLY good first impression! For me, what I love most about Crocodile as a villain is how he has so many "oh, you bastard!" moments but is crafty enough to not only let them interfere with his plans, but even outright ties them into his plans. The most notable example of this is the whole bomb thing, Crocodile tells Vivi about it not expecting her to actually find it, but if she somehow does, the bomb is on a timer and is too heavy to actually move it a safe distance away before it goes off. On top of Crocodile just giving Vivi and the Straw Hat Pirates false hope that they could actually do something about this, it helps keep them distracted while he goes to the crypt and has Robin read the Poneglyphs. Of course, Pell does end up showing up and carrying the bomb away, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process, but I view that as a "evil cannot comprehend good" moment; he didn't account for that because to him, why would anyone throw away their life for someone else. This actually feeds into Crocodile's lack of trust he has for anyone, now that I think about it. See, Crocodile is such a fascinating and layered character, which is impressive considering we don't know Crocodile's backstory or why he is the way he is now, and that helps with his popularity, I feel. Definitely an A-Class villain, in my opinion at least.

Doflamingo is NOT a more effective villain than Crocodile, strictly for one specific reason:
      Zero Tension
Never once, in the entire Dressrosa arc (and that's a long @$$ arc) do I ever feel like Luffy is going to lose to Doffy. The second Luffy puts up his foot to protect Law and take over that fight, all tension evaporates as I'm just waiting for Luffy to put the final nail in Doffy's coffin.
Crocodile was a threat that I honestly did not know how Luffy would overcome. Even after he discovered Croc's weakness to water, it seemed like he was able to absorb it anyway, and Luffy legitimately almost dies THREE TIMES fighting him. It was an absolute nail-biting conclusion.
The same cannot be said for his fight with Doffy. At that point in the story, Luffy had already defeated two warlords, and that was BEFORE his two years of training with Reyleigh, and since we had yet to see him go all out and be pushed to his limits since the time skip, I knew we were just waiting for him to pull whatever new movement had in his arsenal and waist his @$$, which is exactly what happened.
I know Oda tried REALLY hard to still make Doffy seem like a threat by introducing "awakened Devil Fruit powers" (I'm sorry, it STILL sounds corny to me) and having Luffy's haki run out, but it all just comes across superfluous padding that unessesarily drags the fight out even longer than it needed to be, and it was already long as heck.

Bon Clay - Best Buddy Now
No Longer Active but may come back: Doflamingo (In person for now) Big Mom (Probably Survived Volcano)
No longer Active, Morgans, Kuro, Arlong, Krieg, Hody, Kaido, Jack,
So it's about 50/50, but many of the main antagonists end up picking themselves back up.

One of the things that I loved about Crocodile was the conversations he had with Luffy instead of just smack-talk (or getting into someone's head). My favorite being their agreement over the ludicrousness of Vivi not wanting anyone to die especially when a revolt is taking place. It gave credence and not just dismissal to everything Crocodile said, even though Luffy would fight him to keep Vivi and his dream alive.

Crcodile coming out of Impel Down in his clothes shows that its not just an outfit for him. It’s more akin to a uniform, a statement that he is above you simply by what he wears. A General isn’t a General without his uniform, and just by looking at him does he make this statement.

Crocodile is the Frieza of the One Piece world. He starts off as the big bad that must be taken down no matter what. Eventually turned into an unintentional ally but may become an obstacle in the way of Luffy once again to become the King of the Pirates.
And the next villain that we should look at next is Foxy, the polar opposite of Crocodile.

I see some people in the comments saying that crocodile suffers from being an early villain and being weaker than it should. But I honestly don't think this is true for Crocodile.
He was a force of nature, even as a "retired" pirate he was beaten the shit out of everyone in his way, and only lost because Luffy had quite literally God on his side.
Crocodile put the straw hats down more times than Kaido, and not only the straw hats, as he is able to easily beat Robin and the royal guards as well. He display a level of power that we will only see again in Enel, and he is almost a God. Even retired and without Haki, Crocs with the Cross Guild could probably run the ones against CP9. (That would be a really cool history to watch).
And when we see him again, he is just facing everyone in Marineford, from random figurants all the way up to Akainu. Crocodile has always been a menace.

I want to say that Alabasta is probably what set the tone for what One Piece is in general. Up until that point, it was mostly a villain of the week sort of thing. The heroes show up, beat the villain, and move on to the next one. And to be fair, that was because it was still in the stage of gathering and building up it's heroes first. But Alabasta is when the story shifted from plucky pirates leading a carefree life of adventure, to all the grand tales you see after. Political intrigue, multiple battles, maps to keep track of the events, large scale armies, and the heroes breaking into a weight class that can start making an impact on the world at large. This became the format for most of the major arcs going forward.

One thing that I really enjoy was when Crocodile was defeated, the symphony of the new world was playing.
Is soo fitting in the context of Luffy defeating his first big obstacle to enter the big league.
The calm part where Vivi is seeing Crocodile flying, almost like a miracle come true + flashback of when luffy say that he will beat that dude (is soo simple but effective)
And the final part, the glorious ending where King Cobrah is thanking Luffy as the music ends.
I really cannot express how much I love that decision

I want to see a review of Trafalgar D Law as a villain; a lot of people seem to forget: the guy literally pulled hearts from chests, destroyed the entire Punk Hazard lab with one sword stroke, cut through Vertigo (who is grossly undervalued as a haki master) and he orchestrated the only successful plan to unseat an emperor against Kaido, even unseating a second yonko in the process and executing his years long revenge scheme as an added bonus…
Way too many fans have slept on his potential as a foil character to luffy and penultimate villain: if BB can have 2 DF, why can’t Law copy that physiology in himself with a simple procedure and boom now he has the OP and both of BB’s DF. Making him beyond any character we’ve seen so far with 3 of the strongest fruit powers and confirmed conquerors haki

I’m probably not the first person to come up with this theory, but I think the secret about crocodile that ivankov knows about crocodile is that crocodile may have been enslaved by the celestial dragons at some point. Seeing how ivankov was also enslaved they could have somehow crossed paths, probably during the god valley incident where crocodile could have escaped, and the fact that crocodile is prideful enough that he wouldn’t want information like that getting out.

I think MOST of Luffys enemies are not done after being defeated. Only Hordy, Arlong and Don Krieg were done for i believe, and maybe Donflamingo, but hes coming back for sure. even Captain Black still sails about. Buggy just got bigger from it, CP9 rose in rank, Jacko joined the marines as Hinas simp, Alvita sails with Buggy, Ceasar joined up with Judge, Enel found a new army, Katakuri is still the second in command. Even Moria was still doing his thing. Oh and Kaido and Big Mom might be dead, but probably not.
The Lord of the Coast is probably still eating peoples arms.

11:22 I'd like to think part of why Crocodile laughs here is because he's just now realising that this was a side benefit of stealing, and that he'd been focused enough on his plans of using rain powder to create a drought to harm public morale & sow distrust in the king that he simply hadn't considered how the lack of rain benefit him as a result of his devil fruit. He's hearing Luffy say that and having a little giggle like "Oh yeah, I guess that did work to my advantage"

I have to admit, I like that you’re doing this. This should be fun to see where every main villain from One Piece ranks.
If I may throw a war spear in the ring, I would like to see you do Don Krieg next. With no devil fruit, Fishman genetics, or direct cyborg implants (but admittedly a lot of foul play), he almost killed Luffy (even though he technically lost the fight). Plus his gear was pretty sick.

Watching this video made me realize that there's a very real chance Crocodile could actually have a chance of fulfilling his dreams from Alabasta as well. I love the way you ended this video:
"Even though this may not have been his plan, he's now put into a position to go after the one piece"
The reality is, with Buggys wild fate of failing upwards, Crocodile and the Cross Guild have the real potential to fail into Pluton. Especially if something were to go awry with Swamp nakama's "dream of meeting Blackbeard". This shift in him feels eerily like Sabaody- in that Carabou is looking for a way to preserve himself, and then in a fatesome twist he could actually be trying to meet with our favorite genius jester.
