It’s always felt significant to me that when Buggy talks about how ‘brightly’ Shanks shone, the panel doesn’t show a memory of Shanks doing anything cool. He’s not fighting, he’s not exhibiting any skills or prowess- he’s being patted on the head by Roger. I think Buggy’s real dream was inheriting Roger’s will. He perceives that Shanks inherits it, because of the straw hat and the way Roger treats him. Buggy can’t achieve his dream because it’s been given to Shanks (or so he thinks.) That’s why he is willing to follow and support Shanks- because it’s through that inherited will that Roger will survive past death. When Shanks refuses to go after the One Piece, it’s not just the sting of him throwing away what Buggy wanted most and didn’t feel capable of- it’s the sting of seeing Roger’s will thrown away. The way he speaks during this scene points to it too. He doesn’t say ‘Didn’t you say you would’ to Shanks, he says ‘Didn’t you tell Roger you would.’ It’s not so much about Shanks himself as it is about Buggy’s love for Roger. I think that’s why it hurt Buggy so deeply, even though I doubt he understands this consciously.
This further hits when you realize how much Buggy copies Roger. Doing things in the flashiest way possible, calling Rayleigh/Mr 3 partner, even his look. Chin growth, cravat, bandanna, tricorn hat, sash & pirate captain's coat (fair enough most people wear a sash and coat but still.

Also Luffy growing from fighting fair to fighring dirty is a neat little detail I hadn't noticed. Luffy was so naive but after learning that pirates don't necessarily all have a code of conduct in battle, he's accepted that as a trutth and lesson learned for years to come.
that is only half true tho. Luffy's enitre stance on fighting fair/dirty only applies to his opponents. he doesn't hold them to any standards of fairness. but Luffy holds himself to the highest of standards when it comes to fighting fair. And it's not a matter of morality, Luffy wants to be the strongest so when it comes to besting an oppononet he sees as someone he NEEDS to beat to become pirate king (Katakuri, Kaido etc), he fights fair. That does not mean Luffy wouldn't be pragmatic in high stakes situations, he did not reject Kid, Law, Zoro and Killer fighting alongside him against Kaido (although they were all competetive about it) but if Luffy had a choice in it, he would have chosen to beat Kaido by himself (which is what the fight eventually turns into, barring the few interruptions from Momo & Yamato) even if it meant certain defeat (which is exactly what happens not once, not twice, but thrice) because if he couldn't beat the likes of Kaido and Katakuri fairly, he would never become pirate king.
Early one piece villains were so wonderfully delusional. Dumbasses like Buggy, Krieg and arlong all thinking they could rule the grandline, even though each of them had experience with how terrifying the peaks of power in this world are. Buggy knew Roger and whitebeard firsthand, Krieg got clapped by mihawk, arlong was battered by kizaru. And they still think they can be the greatest...

I disagree that Buggy was a joke as villain. He completely dominated the strawhats, defeated Zoro quite handedly giving credit to his claim that he is not afraid of any swordman, he also gave Luffy a run for his money and would probably have won the fight if he wouldn't have his body parts bound. He was a solid villain. Much more threatening than lets say Hody for example who was a complete joke, getting completely clapped by Zoro instantly in his own element even and then only relying on drugs for more power. And even then he accomplished nothing noteworthy except tanking alot of damage due to being drugged and backstabbing his own ally Vander Decken, without whom he couldn't even have posed a threat to fishman island with Luffy & Jinbe opposing him. Did he turn into a joke at the end of Orange Town arc? Sure but he certainly wasn't a joke during the start or middle of it. Even right up until his body parts were bound he posed a real threat to the strawhats.
1:20 I don't think anyone noticed this but, in between Buggy and Shanks you can sort of make out a sort of early artwork for Spandam. I mean, look at the metal face and shape and everything, it kinda looks like spandam if you don't look at him too much or in a close perspective. This just shows how early he was thinking about future villans in One Piece.
I think the inconsistency in Luffy's philosophy about fighting dirty can be chalked up to character development, even if it may not have been planned that way
Crocodile showed Luffy that when it comes to fighting, the only code real pirates follow is their own. If it doesn’t keep you from chasing your ambitions, then it’s fair game.
not *his* atoms, if you recall it, the awakening of a paramecia, usually has to do with affecting the environment around you with the powers of your fruit, so if he manages to awaken it, that could very well be a possibility
It might be a coincidence but Buggy is also the only one who has ever damaged Luffy's strawhat. He stabbed it and left 3 marks on it which are still visible in some recent panels which reminds me of Shanks' 3 scars that Blackbeard left on his face offscreen. All of those four guys are the current Yonko...
Me too, I really want Luffy to achieve Pirate King but then almost immediately relinquish that title to Buggy. Though I'm not entirely sure what king of the pirates means yet.
@@KingKazon99 Luffy would totally give up the title of Pirate King the moment anyone tries to ascribe significance to it. He simply desires the freedom that comes with the title of Pirate King. On the other hand, Buggy views the title of Pirate King as Roger's legacy and therefore aims to uphold it. So Luffy relinquished the title to Buggy, everyone doing the shocked Enel face and the Strawhats laughing while they race back to their ship is the way I see One Piece ending.
It would be wild if he somehow gets the other warlords to join Cross Guild. That would basically be the Rocks Pirates 2.0. Matter of fact, it would be insane if Buggy inherited Xebec's will this whole time. It would sure be one heck of a joke that Oda played on us.
Buggy is my favorite non-Straw Hat Pirate character in One Piece, I just can't get enough of this guy! I get the feeling Oda liked him so much that he keeps finding excuses to keep him involved in the plot, even when he doesn't do anything involved with the Straw Hat Pirates. Given how much he keeps failing upwards, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually does find One Piece first, by some miraculous piece of dumb luck. What sticks out about him, for me anyway, is how he was introduced vs. what he became afterward. While he was still comedic in his introduction arc, Oda still tried to make him seem menacing and cruel, and had him use his own men as shields when Luffy bounced one of his Buggy Balls back at him. He's mellowed out considerably since then, and I'd like to think it was his misadventures immediately after being defeated by Luffy that gave him character growth and taught him to value his crew more, especially after seeing they memorialized him when they thought he was dead. There are also some odd continuity things regarding involving his flashback, but that doesn't impact his character all that much, it's just a bunch of weird contrivances. That said, I DO like how Oda managed to keep the whole "I hate Shanks because of this one treasure he prevented me from getting (even though it was mostly Buggy's fault)" thing despite Buggy and Shanks seemingly still continuing to be friends after this flashback years later, when it's revealed that Buggy is using that as a cover for the real reason he's resentful of Shanks: he thought Shanks (as the clear favorite of the two with their captain Gol D. Roger) would want to uphold Roger's legacy and go to Laugh Tale and was offended that he didn't want to immediately do that. It's details like this that make Buggy feel like a richer character than I initially gave him credit for, and again, he was already one of my favorite characters before this, and I just find it super impressive (and flashy)!
To be fair to the government on the Impel Down thing, Buggy was the first person to join Luffy's breakout squad (albeit reluctantly), and he was directly responsible for releasing half the bulk of the final army that aided in the breakout, who then went on to be full-time members of his crew. So, calling him a ringleader isn't exactly wrong.
I started reading One Piece in 2003, shortly after it was published in Shonen Jump here in Canada, and even then, at 7 years old, I loved Buggy. He was so scary at first, but Luffy being able to turn someone so intimidating as Buggy made me love Luffy even more. Seeing Buggy's chibi adventures was one of my favourite parts of every chapter. And then his return in Loguetown!! I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling of seeing Luffy grin before Buggy executes him. His return in Impel Down! Slowly amassing former villains to his side. For me, that was just as exciting as the return to Sabaody. Oda has created a villain and a rival for Luffy so likeable that some of us want him to beat the main character to his goals. That is a remarkable feat of writing.
3:30 - I'd like to think the inconsistency of Luffy saying "There's no such thing as fighting dirty in a battle between Pirates" to Karakuri is character growth. When he complained about fair fights in East Blue, he was still a naive rookie that expected other Pirates to hold themselves to his standards and how he perceived Shanks. But by time he reached Whole Cake Island, he's much more weathered and experienced, and knows full well that many of his enemies will take every advantage they can get to kill him, so he doesn't really see enemies playing every card they have as dirty tricks amymore. Either that or his morals have shifted to the point where he's more accepting of people thay don't fight how he would.

At the end of every arc i always looked forward to the obligatory "Shanks Update" chapter. At some point that changed. Now i look forward to the "Buggy Update". Watching villains grow alongside protagonists is exciting. He's on par with Blackbeard in that regard
Recently it's turned out the reverse of what Buggy said is happening. Luffybis turning into a Pirate God, while Buggy may be turning into the next Pirate King
A better comparison for how heartbreaking it was for buggy to hear shanks change his mind is like, if the strawhats suddenly heard luffy says, he wont be the pirate king.
Tbh, I kinda like the way that the live action version portrayed buggy. He is shown as a lot more dangerous and very cunning, but still keeps up some form of comedic relief to come.
Buggy has grown to be legit one of the greatest characters in One Piece with an actual shot at being the Pirate King. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he actually pulls it off. The biggest thing he's missing is having a way to read Poneglyphs.
Buggy’s devil fruit is very simple. Its simplicity is a product of the story being very early in its production. It’s as simple as it is broad, which gives it so much potential
What I love is buggy made his declaration at his lowest point at the mercy of 2 former warlords who are insane powerhouses in their own right and buggy basically said you guy are cowards the only reason you don’t want the one piece is because you don’t want it bad enough while mihawk and croc are torturing him out of boredom
Its a pretty iconic scene to be honest. They are standing ontop of him looking down on him all the while he is looking down on their weak ambitions and how they are settling for something as minor as having an organisation that can't be defeated by the marines.
For who to review next as a villain, I personally wouldn't mind Hody Jones being one of the next ones up. At first glance, yes, he's essentially Arlong's worse self, but like most of Oda's characters, there's more to what he says and does than one would think given how the Fishman Island Arc was handled.
I think so as well. Question is just how does he get there? He still needs to find the Road poneglyphs or get copies of them. So either he backtrackts to Alabasta, BM Territory etc to get them or defeat Shanks/BB/Luffy or just gets them handed to him somehow... I wonder how he plans on getting those. Not to mention he'd need someone like Robin to decipher them as well. (Which I think generally is a plot hole in One Piece, why is noone thinking about the need to translate/decipher them except for Big Mom with Pudding? Like how did Law/Kid except to read them? They made like 0 effort to aquire anyone who can read them)
I think Luffy's change in opinion is just a reflection of character growth and understanding of what he has to deal with if he wants to become the king of the pirates
I had a theory a while back, that if Buggy trained his powers hard enough, or awakened his fruit's full potential, he could probably divide himself down to nearly an atomic scale, turning himself into a deadly mist that could selectively recombine within his enemies and destroy them. Or maybe his power would extend to things around him, enabling him to disintegrate anything.
At the very least he could dodge every attack by splitting into atoms. How his offensive power would look like is another story I don't think it would fit well into the One Piece way of fighting powers to just creep inside someone and explode them...
I, with absolutely no shred of irony, want Buggy to become King of the Pirates. Not as like an accident or a gag or a figurehead or whatever, my man deserves the W. He's a very capable guy, has the forces of a Yonko at his disposal, and has the knowledge and experience from the Oro Jackson like Shanks. Sure he sucks at fighting compared to the other big names, but he's really inventive with his powers (not to mention actual inventions).
You misunderstand, he didn’t use a reverse Happy Ending, he used the happy ending itself. A very scary move to have used on you without your permission
I wouldn't call the change in Luffy's mind about fighting with honor inconsistency but rather a total understandable evolution of his character after his adventures, fights and, you know, witnessing his dear brother being killed in cold(?) blood.
He says though that "he doesn't care if he got to this position/point by sheer luck or by accident, and now he wants to go get the one pice" That implies that he sees his status as positive. Otherwise he wouldn't refer to it as being "lucky" no?
I feel like those two Luffy quotes show how much he’s grown since the start. He’s realized how in a life or death battle, there is no such thing as fairness.
3:35 it's not inconsistent it's called character development and yes i'm aware that i'm implying that one of Luffy's earliest signs of growth as a character in the story came from the first encounter against Buggy...
I honestly think his fight with buggy is when luffy realized that fighting dirty is just part of piracy. So I believe that's why he said what he said against katakuri.
I hope he gets to at least fully awaken his Devil Fruit. If he can split up his body, what is to say a fully awakened fruit would do? Chop up and separate the world around him?
The Skull Island depicted/described ( allegedly) in Captain John Treasure map could also be original Jaya. So the gold/treasure Buggy is after is already in the Moon.( Ark Maxim)

Luffy finds the One Piece, but then boogie shows up and destroys it by accident
A better comparison for how heartbreaking it was for buggy to hear shanks change his mind is like, if the strawhats suddenly heard luffy says, he wont be the pirate king.
Tbh, I kinda like the way that the live action version portrayed buggy. He is shown as a lot more dangerous and very cunning, but still keeps up some form of comedic relief to come.
It still amazes me how this character change from being a comedic villain to one of the four most powerful pirate captains in the world.
Yeah like you said. Buggy has transcended the role of villain. He's a larger than life figure, both within the series and the fandom.
Love how Shanks is literally Logan Paul in your Buggy investment thesis.
He’s going to find the wrong treasure😭 but make everybody think he actually found the one piece 🏴☠️
I know why Buggy can't be defeated he has plot armor.
Hello, CEO of Shanks Corp. Buggy was removed from office because someone found his nose in a panty drawer. Thank you.
I've always loved Buggy as a character, but after watching this, he easily becomes one of my favourites in the entire series
Buggy has grown to be legit one of the greatest characters in One Piece with an actual shot at being the Pirate King. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he actually pulls it off. The biggest thing he's missing is having a way to read Poneglyphs.
Or a Pirate God.
@@merafirewing6591 Oh, do you think Eneru is going join Cross Guild then?
@@lordcthulhu8472 Eneru is just going to be a wild card.
We all know buggy will get credit for finding the one piece when luffy finds it
Always nice when I get to see glr do a video about the best character in one piece
you make the manga breaks bearable. Thank you man on the internet
You know Buggy would've been living a comfortable, quiet life in the East Blue, if it weren't for that meddling Strawhat
this is the sort of content i signed up for
Reading old one piece kinda makes me respect Oda's growth as an artist over the last 25 years.
Always a good day when I can watch a glr vid during my lunch break
For who to review next as a villain, I personally wouldn't mind Hody Jones being one of the next ones up. At first glance, yes, he's essentially Arlong's worse self, but like most of Oda's characters, there's more to what he says and does than one would think given how the Fishman Island Arc was handled.
I've said it since the early 2000s. He'll be the first one to find the One Piece and he'll not care because it's not actually treasure.
They made like 0 effort to aquire anyone who can read them)
I’m dying for the Moria video. I love Thriller Bark and how ridiculous Moria is.
Like him or not Buggy's goated and he never once used his Captain's name to make a name for himself. That's how respectful he is. I hope he gets haki.
OG Buggy on chapter 16 looks like Crocodile with clown make-up on
I think Luffy's change in opinion is just a reflection of character growth and understanding of what he has to deal with if he wants to become the king of the pirates
Buggy D. Clown, the future God of the Pirates.
My theory is that it will be revealed to the masses that there is somebody on the "empty" throne but the public believes it is buggy
It would be hilarious if buggy was telling this story and he became the pirate King while luffy actually became Pirate God😂😂
I wouldn't call the change in Luffy's mind about fighting with honor inconsistency but rather a total understandable evolution of his character after his adventures, fights and, you know, witnessing his dear brother being killed in cold(?) blood.
10:01 The One Piece is real
I respect the decision to not give buggy a special tier outside the system.
buggys cross guild outfit looks like he has awakened fruit user clouds.
I don't think Buggy even wants to be an emperor or be known as a powerful figure so much that the government wants to get rid of him.
He says though that "he doesn't care if he got to this position/point by sheer luck or by accident, and now he wants to go get the one pice" That implies that he sees his status as positive. Otherwise he wouldn't refer to it as being "lucky" no?
Imagine if Buggy's fruit's first user is the second person to ever set sail at sea after Joyboy
Am I the only person when he sees buggy. Sing out loud. The
Strains of time.
Buggy doesn't love gold. He just says that to get into its bed
Cant wait for the villain analisys episode for Shanks
I hope he gets to at least fully awaken his Devil Fruit. If he can split up his body, what is to say a fully awakened fruit would do? Chop up and separate the world around him?
I liked what they did with the Netflix Buggy, but I really really wish they had kept the ball kick scene from the manga
The Skull Island depicted/described ( allegedly) in Captain John Treasure map could also be original Jaya. So the gold/treasure Buggy is after is already in the Moon.( Ark Maxim)
Buggy is like a fine wine:it only gets better with age
1:25 Looks like the Rocks pirate with the beard thay Moria resurrected
