I'm a low alto. The amount of times my voice cracked was remarkable.
I'm a low mezzo-soprano and this was... not easy.
I'm a 1st soprano and had the opposite problem as you, I was able to get all of the low notes except for "as they tear your world apart." xD
I am also a low alto, and I can't sing this song without singing it a third or fifth down. If not, it sounds terrible.
I'm a countertenor and this wasn't hard at all!
Update: I can now sing this without my voice cracking at all!

I had to sing this at a school musical last year and was nearly in tears. It was one of the most emotional songs I have ever sung. I would personally like to thank Anne Hathaway for her glorious performance of this piece. She was absolutely beautiful.

I don't know either, but I assume it means you can feel the song as you were the singer.. if it means sth else, please, could sb let us know??
Females have two parts to their voices, a chest voice and a head voice. When you use your chest voice (the lower half of your range) they call it a belt. Some people can stretch their "belt" really high-- look at Idina Menzel singing Defying Gravity. The head voice is the higher stuff, usually used by sopranos (think Laura Benanti in Into the Woods.) If you can't stretch that louder, lower part to the higher notes, singers are supposed to learn how to "mix" or use parts of their head and chest voice to sing. Felicia Ricci has done a bunch of videos on how to do it. It protects you from developing throat problems. So she's saying she can't just use her lower register to sing it, so she has to blend in some of her upper register (the head voice) as well. Hope this helped!

When Anne Hathaway sings this song she goes through so many emotions. She was sad then it all hit her and she was devastated. Then she seemed angry and in that last minute she was numb. That is why that scene was so intense

The memories of singing this as well as Les miserables songs during my school choir days. Sure miss those days and years of practicing but i truly enjoyed every practice since it was Les miserables.
Im sure I'm with everyone else when I say I can't freaking sing this song (or On my Own) without sobbing. Hey. At least it's in character, right?

Finally a song with lyric's that say all that I have lived and tasted....the essence of this song is the vanity that a person feels when they get old. And look back over all the cracks and crevices they have never been able to pull themselves out of. And even in my own life time I have lived two separate births and been given two separate lives in one span of time. From my natural birth of my mother and dad...I was young and wild and crazy. Did horrible things and spent a long stretch in prison for a horrendous crime. Was married, had three children, divorced and one of those kids died over drug overdose. And his child ( grand child ) also died of overdose. While in prison I got " born again " a second life commenced and a new wife and new children but even with that my circumstances never changed. It was being born again with the same old ideas lacing me up again. The dreams of becoming a Jesus freak and living that " Heavenly " life with Christ as my shepherd, died in all the same old ways that my first marriage did. Two complete different life times in one and yet both predominately the same. The whole idea of creation only reminds me of vanity...the cruelty that God displays when He hates you. His hands are never upon you to treat you with His purported kindness. His guardian angels are not as guardian as they are portrayed to be when you hear the gospel at the church. This song says...hoping God is forgiving....yes that's the cliche that we read about in the Book called The Bible. But the reality of it hardly assembles itself into your own life. The thoughts and intents of the heart never get out of the sewage of life. Because life was never meant to be anything but a drain. It drains you for everything and then kills you in the end, graveyard dead. Vanity composes this song about a " Dream ". Because life in its deepest official mode has no absolute promises....except death. That is with all truth the absolute only promise you have received that will fulfill its mark upon you. Everything else that you achieved has been a long journey of complete uselessness and a waste of time and effort. Building, saving, working, slaving, enduring, and finally death. Nothing can save you from it. It's inevitable and will take everything you ever owned or struggled for and give it to someone else. They will reap what you have spent a life time sowing and achieving. It's always doing for the next of kin's benefit...they reap the harvest of your sweat and toil. Life is vanity...death makes it so. Oh yes there's the old cliche that you are going to heaven and entertain the angels of God and be with Jesus the Savior. But there are tremendous conditions that go along with that so called journey. And there are Spiritual attributes that you must maintain all your life to get to that point. God is not going to just give heaven cause " You Been A Good Little Human Being ". He has certain barriers and conditions that go along with every word that is found in scripture. It's not like I go to church so I have heaven as my home. I pay my tithes and I am on the side that is winning....gonna get me a piece of the sky .....
This song " I Dreamed A Dream " is exactly the human nature of all humanity....living a long miserable life just to end up dead...dust and ashes in the ground or in the urn......and that's all it is Vern...you know what I mean?
