Singing this as a gay man really made me cry cause it made me think of the struggles people of the LGBTQ+ go through where if they express how they truly feel, they'll let their families down and instead feel they must be someone they're not. I'm sorry. I don't mean to get that deep and personal. It was just something I was thinking of while singing this.

This is a beautiful song, beautifully composed and orchestrated from the beautiful Disney animation " Mulan," I have had the opportunity to have sung this song many times and still love singing it when the opportunity arises, it always captures my heart, just goes to show you should never be afraid of being yourself and learn about yourself everyday.

There’s something so bittersweet about singing this song, looking in the mirror with my short hair and clothes that I love and remembering how much i resonated with this song a few years ago. Back when my hair was long and I was forced to wear skirts every day for school, I would sometimes look in the mirror and just cry because I didn’t look like myself, I felt like I was wearing a costume or putting on a show. Sending love to all the people going through similar things, whether you are trans, nonbinary, a bit genderqueer like me, gay, bi, ace, whatever, I’d just like to let you all know that it really does get better and you will be able to be comfortable in your own skin❤
This is a song about a girl who doesn’t want to let her family down but she knows what’s right and what she has to do for her father and she doesn’t want her family to feel disgraced by her because she wants to fight in her fathers place and protect him because he’s sick and old and instead of letting her father risk his life she went in his place instead and fought for him. It’s not about identity or anything like that its about bravery, respect and loyalty and stepping the place of people who aren’t in a position to fight
