My employer turned on my webcam whilst I was working. I work remotely and I did my due diligence on reading terms of contract before I signed. We use a different app, non of those mentioned here. I knew that the monitoring through cam was not part of the contract. I put a piece of tape on the laptop camera and a couple of days after I was receiving messages from my superiors asking for status on my work. It was message after message after message. I stated, what up with the messages? They did not say anything and to this day they have said shit. If my production numbers are high, I don't understand what the point is of all this monitoring. It's harassment.
That is crazy! What a horrible breach of your privacy. There seems to be a ton of new companies offering this tech so it’s not surprising it’s a different one that what was mentioned in the video. Honestly who cares what you are doing as long as you are performing well at your job. It’s ridiculous to think spying on their employees is at all reasonable.
I'm a fed govt employee with a production based job. There were tools used well before the pandemic to track productivity but also monitored for security purposes. Once the pandemic kicked off and some were permitted to WFH, thankfully the Union made sure to keep monitoring and surveillance practices to only what's required. Our front-line managers were also cool about not ambushing us with surprise work audits. But, tbf most of our frontline managers were promoted from within so they understand how the perception of a (or complete) lack of trust can affect what was already an unstable and shrinking workforce. Unions help. As does understandable laptop hardware and how to disable (and quickly re-enable) them!
Unfortunately at the company I am at. After reporting my emails being locked so I cannot send emails. When I reported it to someone in our corporate office. I was told every once in a while people check the emails. However, they are suppose to show who locked the email and it did not. Reported to the Vp and Director. Now I know why so many it is hard for them to hire.
The purpose of working at home is to spend more time with your young children or to have time to care for a disabled or sick parent if you are getting your work done, then your boss should know that. If a child care center closes at 3 pm that day then you can get things done before that time to pickup your child.
Measure only the time the employee spent on what programs and tell them beforehand. Don’t abuse your employees but don’t let the lazy ones victimise themselves.
