Another option may be to start as a temp. Some large companies will staff up for big projects. I did that a few years ago...went in for a two week assignment and ended up working there for four years. Dave is right. Once they see you have a strong work ethic and add value, they don't want to lose you.
5:00~ I currently agree with this. though not "2 weeks" but basically creating a dedicated piece of work for that prospective employer. They get more realistic perspective on the candidate way better than a resume of paper and text.
The problem with offering a free trial is that in most serious jobs you will be taking over another persons position as they move on or up. This usually takes 1-2 months to get on track with all their projects, be introduced to all their relevant clients and learn relevant company policies/procedures related to the role. A two week trial is a total waste of time for everyone.
Something all my broke friends know nothing about, how to find a good job. I will do anything to get my foot in the door. I started my IT career by building an app for a sports team. I used that app to get my foot in the door by demoing it to a perspective employer. I was able to show, this is what I can do. I was hired on the spot. That was over 30 years ago. Latest job I have, I started to look before my last job came to an end. Far easier to get a job, when you already have a job.
I interviewed with a company once who wanted me to work for free for three months before then paying me $500 a month to be an "on call" employee. Gotta have a real passion for the work to take that kind of deal!
@TheLifeBidder no its not. The person im on about workes the 6 months for free along side their normall job and then after that 6 months they where hired and started to get payed for their work but if thwy hadnt of done the 6months for free they'd of never been hired for more money than their original job.
Respect to Dave, but do not offer free work to prove yourself or accept that offer as an employer . It's illegal and very gimmicky. Interns receive college credit in exchange for their work and employers are limited in what work an intern is allowed to do. Finding work isn't a majic formula, it's hitting the job sites every day, matching your resume and cover letter for every good job, and connecting with your network. I have my awesome current job because I worked my way through large temp agency till I connected with the direct hire person. It took me 3 years and 3 jobs to find my fit, and all the pain was worth it. The other day, a friend asked me how they're supposed to put the time into finding a job when they work full time, my answer was, I worked full time, and went/go to school part time, and had/have a relationship, and pets. You do it if it matters to you no matter what.
I agree. If everyone did the "two weeks for free", then employers wouldn't need to hire anyone, or would have fewer employees. Conceptually it's a good idea, but realistically, not so much.
There is no such thing as an ideal job. All jobs have certain tradeoff's that one has to compromise on. And the best jobs are all found through personal connections and whom you know, not what you know.
Pros of my job: I get to live in the town I grew up in and I'm a 5 minute drive away from the lake I grew up on. My job is easy and pays decent. I work 9 hour days and get a three day weekend every other week. My health insurance is 100% covered by the company. I get 150 hours of vacation time a year and what I don't use gets rolled over onto sick leave. The work environment is friendly. I don't have to stay out of town very often (maybe 1 week out of the entire year) and I don't get a lot of overtime. I have very little stress. Cons of my job: I live 35 miles from my office and have to commute. The company I work for was very close to shutting its doors for a few years so I didn't get much in terms of pay increases and the company had to downsize significantly (30 employees down to 10). I could make a lot more pretty much anywhere else (20k plus a year at most places). My 401k isn't very good and my company does not provide a match. I'd say I'm ideal with my employment because going anywhere else I'd have to sacrifice several of the pros I currently have and the extra money just isn't worth it to me.
What is the difference between 150 hours of vacation and just being paid more per hour but unpaid vacation and being paid more to cover the health insurance and then some?
The problem is few people value the arts. There is a reason they call them starving artist. It's hard work to make it in that business and you can spend a lifetime trying and never make it.
For graphic designers the best way to do is to create their own products and promote the heck out of them on social media. Also there are ways to find good clients, networking is key too. Also, web design is key these days.
doesn't always work! Great advice but truly it doesn't always work. My husband did several of those suggestions and still didn't get hired. HOWEVER, when he did finally get hired it was through someone he knew and they did a trial run of him for - guess what - 2 weeks. I think it just depends on God's timing for you to get a job but you shouldn't be slack in your methods.
Sooooo true!!! The question should be asked is passion vs income? I choose income all day bc passion doesn’t provide income until later. I would follow income then do passion on the side until it’s an income
i did the test drive one time when i was done the guy didnt hire me the day after he let me go i got a job in the same field better paying then the first guy was gonna pay the second guy called me out of the blue the first guy was talking to the second guy and told him I know a great guy i just cant use him so there were good feeling all around
You have to know somebody to get a job. Employers treat employees bad, lack the ability to lead and blame their own shortcomings on others. Employers lie about the job duties, earnings, benefits and make their job sound like a good place to be and then reality sets in and all the employees leave for better opportunities. [Journey of Oppression & Broke = JOB] My Getting-a-JOB experience has been very poor in the past twenty years due to abuse of position power, nepotism, unreasonable expectations and LAZY people... One of the employees at McDonalds wants me to come back to work because no-one will do the work expected of the job, maybe the wannabe managers should have treated me better and not accused me of being a slacker and milking the time clock.

My family may be moving as well. We are desperate to get our income up, but it's been tough finding anything. There are just no good jobs in our area of Indiana, the kind a man can do to make a decent living for his family. All we have are fast food places and Walmart. Even looking out an hour drive from us there's still nothing and I wouldn't want to drive that far anyway. Hope you find what you are looking for! It's tough out there.

Corporate retirement isn't a pension anymore. They offer 401(k)s usually. They wouldn't be "taking responsibility" of her retirement.
