Fantastic comparison video! It must have been a huge time sink for you but you created the definitive paint stripper review that's helping people years after you made it. Thanks so much!
Thank you for taking the time to make this comparison video on currently available metal paint stripper products. I've been putting off a valve cover restoration project trying to find a non-methylene chloride paint stripper that might actually work. This was very helpful. Great video!
The aircraft stripper before it was changed was unbelievable. It worked fast, deep and if you didn't care about nose hairs you'd apply without a respirator! LOL.
Here I was needing to strip paint and I tried klean strip meant for metal from Home Depot, nothing for the rims I'm restoring. Got Aircraft stripper and while it removed some, it's not much better than klean strip from what it used to be.
@@Albert87nl it is a nasty solvent yes, but if you use a face sheild, respirator, and chemical resistant gloves and try to work outside it poses no more danger than burnt toast. But I thank you for recommending Jasco, as I had nearly lost faith once the KleenStrip failed miserably on my rockers. Keep up the good work & happy creating ~
Hi, I actually love how u did this experiment. Using the different strippers on different parts of the car really shows how it could be effective on other items that u might want to use it on. I am looking to refinish my kitchen table and cabinets and this video really helped me choose the citrastrip. It seems it will do a great job at taking off the top layer only, so I don't damage the wood. Thank u for spending the time to do this video. U r awesome 💜
Thank you for the Video. In my opinion, the way the paint strippers without methylene chloride perform, the paint stripper manufacturers better do something to improve their products or they are going to go broke.
Not trying to tell my life story here, but I used to work in an aircraft paint shop. Before I started they would use methylene chloride stripper. They'd spray an airplane down, leave the hangar for lunch and then get to scraping. By the time I started they adopted a new stripper without methylene chloride and they would spray planes with it at the end of the day and leave them overnight just so it had time to work. I totally understand why this stuff is off of the shelves but there's no denying that it worked great. Most of these paint stripper brands tout "works after 15 minutes" but the old super harsh stuff would do it in 15 seconds. No joke. Great video! Thanks for making it.
I use the old paint stripper for years many years 40 years without a respirator with no ill effects and it worked very well and save me a whole lot of time the new stripper is a waste of money and cost twice as much
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is just what I needed to see. I needed to strip a car and was able to while I could still get the air craft stripper in the auto parts store with the Methylene Chloride in it. But, right when I got to the bumper cover of my car, all of a sudden I couldn’t find the aircraft stripper anywhere. It was like the ones I bought were the last of it. Then it was back in the stores again but without Methylene Chloride and let me tell you! That stuff DOES NOT WORK PERIOD. Do NOT buy It…. You will be wasting your money. That’s why I’m so thankful for this video so I could actually see what would work. And the future is not looking that bright. I also researched and found out why they took the Methylene Chloride out. It was dummies using it in closed confined space with on ventilation and no PPE.
Correct!! Exactly what happened. They were probably using gallons of it to strip a car in a close garage without ventilation and PPE and have ruined it for everyone else. If you try to work outside where possible and use the correct PPE then im sure thousands of people were absolutely fine. There's no substitute to Dichloromethane tbf.. it s a bad ass stripper!!
Love the videos man, keep them coming and good luck. I finally made some real progress on my Z and welded in the passenger side floor pan. It was rough but not near as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for helping motivate me!
Great job on the video, Min. Such a well thought out comparison of products definitely takes time and energy. Kudos! It realy helped me to choose the Jasco for my project - restoring the finish on my 2000 lb 1969 Bridgeport milling machine.

I can tell you from experience. Get some good industrial squirt bottles and spray the best stripper you have. Spraying it is not only faster but it apply the stripper evenly and you can get a thick coat on. Using a brush thins out the amount you are using. Also, whatever bottles you use for this will be rendered useless after a few fill ups. The stripper will destroy the pump.
yeah I tested this myself awhile ago and I applied one part with a brush and one part just by spraying and yeah using the brush just doesn't work at all.
Nice video, I've been looking at getting a 280z as a future project car and want to go about restoring the same way you do. I will say your videos have helped greatly in my research as I am still a beginner when it comes to cars. Also, I must compliment you on the way you conducted your testing. It always annoys me to see people conduct flawed tests and get inaccurate results. Keep it up friend.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very informative. Methylene Chloride would strip those layers in about 110 seconds. By the time you had moved about 12 inched down the piece, the first areas were already bubbling. I feel so safe knowing it now takes 15 times longer to strip paint. Not hating on you, just frustrated with my government protecting me from me. Thanks again.
Thank you for making this video! I am just about to begin chemically stripping my 1955 GMC truck. I was leaning toward Aircraft Remover, as I've used it with great results in the past. I've also used Jasco with good results, too. I realize ingredients have changed in recent years. But your video confirms for me that these two are still the best of the bunch.
I paid 80 bucks for air craft stripper and it did nothing ,the old stuff although not safe worked almost immediately with out the wait time, as long as you were safe the old stuff was safe as well
Thanks man. This was a great practical test. Well thought out and executed. Methylene chloride works great and so finding a replacement that actually works. Jasco is it.

and that's why we have regulations and laws to protect the environment. People always want something fast and easy and they really dont care if it damages the environment or other people. As long as they dont have to use any elbow grease...
Appreciate the effort put in here... Starting a project 69 Dart soon and itll need stripped. Now i know what to buy!! Thanks!! Great project car btw...had a 78 eons ago, and it was such a fun car to drive!! Miss it!!👍👍
biggest issue with the methylere chloride replacement products is they flash off too fast to be useful. you end up having to apply them 3-4 times. multistrip and citristrip you can lay them on thick and though they don't work as fast you only have to apply it once and let it sit for a few hours. let them sit overnight and it will take it down to bare metal. They can also be sprayed with an airless pump which should give you some idea's if you are using this for production work
With paint stripper gels containing methylene chloride you're supposed to use a type of paper, similar looking to baking paper to cover over the paint stripper gel, whilst it's clinging to the workpiece.
Glad to see you back. Its been awhile. I was thinking you may have got overwhelmed with the body work and took a big break! But, more likely the holidays and the NC weather during this time of year makes it kind of unpleasant to work on a Z car. Can't wait for whats next.
Blue Bear GL 600 soy strip. I did 3 layer of paint and primer on a Porsche in a weekend. SLow dry and if you cover it with plastic no dry. Spread easy, doesn't hurt your eyes. No smell. Not cheap but awesome. Made of concentrated soy stripper. Used it for years.
Thanks for a helpful experiment. I've used Aircraft Remover and Jasco, and I also prefer the Jasco. FYI, I just bought a new can at Lowes last week (May 2022), the price is now over $25 a quart.

I found the same thing with the Jasco stripper that you chose. The Kwik-Strip is made by the same company as Jasco (and possibly the Citristrip) but I found the Jasco to work faster and clean up easier, as well. Thanks for this review it confirmed by findings!
I use the citrus strip for my car rims since I have tires on them & don’t want to damage it Incase I spill some on them. this does the job very well I leave it overnight . since it does take 24hr to do what the quality of the Jasco/Aircraft . Plus the smell is a big plus for since I work in a close area. I guess it depends how fast you want the job done. Thank you for doing this comparison of products 👌🏽
Thanks for the comparison. You did a lot of work, and its helpful to know what to purchase. for reference with the original Lightning Strip and plastic wrap i would have already stripped, prepped and applied two part epoxy primer and been cleaning the paint gun after 2 hours, for a deck lid. of course my generation didn't have or use car seats.

That's because it is useless. I mean, compared to the old methylene chloride aircraft stripper all of the "alternatives" are laughable. This is especially obvious when you're trying to strip a truly tough finish.
Thank you for making this video. It was exactly the information i was looking for and you did a phenomenal job hitting every single point. very entertaining too!
I miss the OG Aircraft paint stripper. They should have made the cans big enough to put more warning labels on it. Maybe then people would’ve known to not drink it, huff it or use it as a personal lubricant.
Great work.....Im in the market for some effective stripper for paint on metal. Based on your video outcome, i will get the Jasco Premium paint and epoxy removal for my project. thank you and good luck with your project restoring.
When using the aircraft paint stripper it works better with a brush cut its bristles down to half inch (STIFFER) and dabbed on. Also cover with plastic to keep the gases contained allowing it to work on releasing paint better.
Wish I watched this before I spent on 3 different strippers. So far I've been using 3 year old KleanStrip Stripper that jellied up but still works 10x better then newer formulas but it's hard to apply in it's gelation state.
I had a gallon jug of the citrus strip the original formula. I would use that stuff with a stainless steel Brillo pad. And with that Brillo pad and just a little bit of the product I could strip paint like you wouldn't believe fast. A kid that used to come to my garage and I would help him out from time to time unfortunately I gave him a key. He used the whole gallon of that citrus strip trying to remove a bumper sticker. It makes me heart sick to see these sorry excuses for paint thinner. As useless as these things are you might as well just use the elbow grease and sand everything. How sad everything just going to crap God bless you all. And thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to make a great video. God bless you too.
its really important when applying stripper to only brush in one direction and ONLY ONE STROKE. You won't get results by brushing over the parts you already touch in that manner at all. The back and forth motion disrupts the chemical reaction and introduces air into the chemical. You want to brush in one direction only and overlap barely enough to connect strokes. The dabbing and back and forth is making it ineffective. READ ALL DIRECTIONS and FOLLOW them. Klean Strip and Jasco WILL be the easiest to remove PROVIDED it is applied properly, and will work FAST. 15 minutes, in my experience...
Ya I think I'll look for the older stripper (With the toxic chemicals that actually strip paint)... and just do it outside with a chem filter respirator.
Can you still find it? I think it got banned. Let me know if you know a place to be able to get it. It sucks that a couple idiots ruin it for everyone.
@@justinm4219 Who needs it! Brake cleaner is better than all the product in the vid, but probably not as good as Meth CL. I couldn't believe how it stripped my valve cover. I figured what the hell, I have some left over from a brake service. A few hours the original high heat tough paint wiped off easier than the old oil inside. I used a towels and a drill wire brush. It "cleans" the paint.
Thanks for the video, kinda sad methlyene chloride stripper would of pulled the paint off in 10 min. They keep banning all the good paints and strippers because someone offed themself
Best paint stripper? Blasting. If you're restoring cars you've already got shop air. Investing in the blaster isn't a huge cost and media is cheap and reusable for a bit. Best place to blast is in a tent outside so you don't get shit everywhere. Even sectioning off the shop will still get media everywhere. Strippers are a mess even when they had methylene chloride. They don't get rid of rust and won't easily get into all the hard to reach areas like blasting. Use the right media for the job and you're golden. Having said that, I applaud you for your testing method. It's nice to see all the common chem strippers side by side.
The OLD formula paint stripper chemical is marked up to an unreasonable price on amazon or ebay. It looks like the old fashion way to remove paint is by hand, machine sanding, heat gun, and sand blasting. Thanks for the demo.
Methylene Chloride strippers are still available to commercial users. If you have a commercial biz, or can form one, you can buy it In checking the sds sheets for the Jasco stripper, it appears to still contain methylene chloride! Buy more while you can! SDS sheets are readily available for all of the materials you used.
i had some of the old good shit laying around.. used it to start stripping paint off an old bicycle, well i got most of the paint off easily, went to buy some more just to find out about this methylene chloride ban and i couldnt find anything that actually worked. someone please recommend a product that works to me
Sadly, I do not think there is a paint stripper that works. We've tried ALL the commercial non-meth CL and they simply do not work. We are now looking into sandblasting all our stuff.

That's because it is useless. I mean, compared to the old methylene chloride aircraft stripper all of the "alternatives" are laughable. This is especially obvious when you're trying to strip a truly tough finish.
@@mathos00 I'm doing better now....I scored 10 gaIIons of the "good stuff"
Going to save a lot of time.
It is all useless. Just by methyl chloride online.
You are supposed to prep the surface with a quick scuff with 80 grit sand paper to help the stripper bite in btw!
They all did crap... The old stuff worked wonders and I could strip powdercoat in 5 minutes... Guess i will make my own.
I know but the smell was to HARH
How can I make my own, ur right the old stuff worked wonders the new stuffs like water????
This is an awesome video. I've tried so many, but always disappointed. Going to strip my alloy bike. This just saved me days of work! THANK YOU!!!
Automotive paint is so different than other paints. It would have been nice to see testing done on Latex, Oil, etc based paint.
Thank you for making this video. It was exactly the information i was looking for and you did a phenomenal job hitting every single point. very entertaining too!
Thank you for an excellent comparison test, nice job!
I miss the OG Aircraft paint stripper. They should have made the cans big enough to put more warning labels on it. Maybe then people would’ve known to not drink it, huff it or use it as a personal lubricant.
Yep, the stuff wasn't flammable. The new stuff is. It's gone because people are idiots and didn't wear any PPE while using it.
@@jamesbashaw5831 Yeah, when you have a chemical that can lift decades old paint in seconds I’d say it might be bad for skin.
Yo is it Akio’s Devil Z, I can’t wait to see how the build goes ‼️
Great work.....Im in the market for some effective stripper for paint on metal. Based on your video outcome, i will get the Jasco Premium paint and epoxy removal for my project. thank you and good luck with your project restoring.
I used Aircraft Remover by Rustoleum and fairly pleased. Removed paint down to the metal and stripped clear coat off aluminum.
Thank you for your hard work and offering great value in this video.
Why do I always watch videos like this _after_ I buy a product... lmao
Fam I wish I would have seen this before trying to strip my Datsun and quickly finding out how poorly they work
Im about to strip my Datsun😂 what do I need to know?
its really important when applying stripper to only brush in one direction and ONLY ONE STROKE.
Awesome work man if I wasn't broke I would send some money your way maybe in the future
Ya I think I'll look for the older stripper (With the toxic chemicals that actually strip paint)... and just do it outside with a chem filter respirator.
Can you still find it? I think it got banned. Let me know if you know a place to be able to get it. It sucks that a couple idiots ruin it for everyone.
its illegal to sell to consumers so no one bothers to makes it anymore. you can buy it commercially though if you want 5gal buckets or 55g drums
@@justinm4219 Where can I get 5gal buckets? Meth CL is the ONLY stuff that works for car resto I need for the shop.

Absolutely excellent video, learnt a lot, helped me a lot.
This was so helpful. Thank you!
Excellent video, very informative and eye-opener. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, kinda sad methlyene chloride stripper would of pulled the paint off in 10 min. They keep banning all the good paints and strippers because someone offed themself
Wow Thanks God Bless which is best for old paint stains on Clothes
This is an excellent video. Thank you so much!
Great comparison. Thanks
The OLD formula paint stripper chemical is marked up to an unreasonable price on amazon or ebay. It looks like the old fashion way to remove paint is by hand, machine sanding, heat gun, and sand blasting. Thanks for the demo.
On the citristrip citrus extract is part of the paint stripping formula
Very helpful video. The current prices on the good products are a bit higher in 2022, around $24 for the Jasco or the Aircraft.
I found that laying a xylene soaked rag on a painted surface worked well.
Methylene Chloride strippers are still available to commercial users. If you have a commercial biz, or can form one, you can buy it
In checking the sds sheets for the Jasco stripper, it appears to still contain methylene chloride! Buy more while you can! SDS sheets are readily available for all of the materials you used.
excellent demonstration!
Thank you for the information and your time
Very, very helpful! Thank you so much!
Have you tried Drano?
i had some of the old good shit laying around.. used it to start stripping paint off an old bicycle, well i got most of the paint off easily, went to buy some more just to find out about this methylene chloride ban and i couldnt find anything that actually worked. someone please recommend a product that works to me
Sadly, I do not think there is a paint stripper that works. We've tried ALL the commercial non-meth CL and they simply do not work. We are now looking into sandblasting all our stuff.
