It blows me away how often I find your videos when researching projects I'm working on. You freaking rock dude!

POR-15 might appear to be the most expensive but it’s amazing how much square footage it can cover! When that’s taken into consideration, it probably ranks one of the cheapest out there. Coupled with being the best for stopping rust, it’s an overall amazing product!
Thanks for the feedback.
Been using this product to all my rust repairs , it works
But it's professional use only.
Thousands of people do it themselves with POR-15.
Did you use the metal prep before the POR ?
This is why I love this channel, this project took 60 days to complete, any other channel would have 5 videos from this with updates weekly, but you just put the setup and results all in the same video.
I can attest I used the Rust-Oleum rust reformer in the trunk of my car to cover up some surface rust but don't have to worry about impacts in that area so it works great for me.

Unlike Consumer Reports, which injects a lot of politics into their so-called tests, this guy gets down in the trenches, and checks out stuff us guys really use. Excellent! I also really appreciate the country of origin information, which Consumer Reports promised they would start supplying 15 years ago, but never did.
@@Ebooger they aren't what they used to be..
Not surprised the POR-15 ran away with this one, it's legendary among us old-car enthusiasts. Rust never sleeps! Love your testing methodology, too. As a metallurgical engineer, I've done some work with the SAE J2334 cyclic corrosion test. You might take a look at it and incorporate some element of wet/dry cycles if you ever do longer term corrosion tests in the future.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@ProjectFarm is this your normal voice? are you like "honey, im going to the bathroom. im comparing the efffectiveness of these 4 toilet papers.. ok lets go"
@ProjectFarm so if using on a car say I get the por 15. I would still need to use a primer over top, and then paint of course and finally clear coat to be used on painted surfaces is this correct? I see many people saying need to sand down and use bondo and sometimes metal filler. But on my car the rust isn't that severe. The paint is only beginning to bubble and very slightly crack in small spots. So I feel sanding would be a bad option

Yes he rocks 😎👍
Totally agree, pleasantly surprised.
Testing of the products (especially shop items) is great. Oils, paints, welders, tools ...
Probably the high quality brands like Rust Oleum do test their products. In the past I worked for a large chemical company, and they did extensive testing of paints and coatings in lab. They even had an outdoor testing area. They would put samples out there for years at a time like in a matrix of panels.
You are reproducing that kind of testing on a practical level, its very useful for consumers.
Thanks! Thanks for supporting the channel! I really appreciate it!
Project Farm : We're gonna test that!
Company's : visible sweating.
It's kind of strange to see the "control" test end up in the middle of the pack.
The Rust Reformer looks like an incredible deal for the price.
Thanks for the video, not only is it entertaining but very useful information.
Yeah, I am somewhat concerned by that. It is almost like we are not understanding the point of these rust converters and are testing them against criteria that is unfair. I am not saying I THINK that is the case, just wondering if people with more wisdom than me could posit a test that would have left the paint at the bottom.
These tests were very simular to the bed lining tests in a way. They call got blasted by the rust accelerent solution.
Or... the fact is whatever coating the rust is "converted into" is just poor and there is no fixing a poor material coating. Which makes me think that POR-15 just adds something like plastic truck bed liner as a protectent.
Paint is a great sealer. This test was more about preventing future rust, less about converting existing, so you're right that it didn't necessarily test the intent of the products.
A test that showed the performance of a paint that says all rust must be removed prior to application would have better shown whether the products actually neutralized the existing rust.
You are welcome!
Fantastic comparison. I am amazed at the work and time you put in to this. Excellent video as always. I don't know how you get so much information into a small segment. I struggle to get alot of repair videos down less than 20mins....
Thanks for this testing!

@@ProjectFarm I'm about to get started on a "stop the rust" project on my trailer. I know POR15 from my off-roading days but its been a long time, so I needed this. Thank you for this and many other reviews.
Sad you didnt include the best one out there... Rust Bullet! arg
He did that already
Last fall I "restored" my 2008 F-250 instead of buying a new truck. Essentially I removed the bed, cut out and replaced bed rails, cut out rot on the wheel wheels and replaced that, cut out and replaced cab corners and parts of the inner rockers and then repainted the truck. After doing this I sprayed the underside of the cab with Chassis Saver which is a product very similar to POR15 and then sprayed fluid film. I sprayed the entire underside of the cab in fluid film over the Chassis Saver paint and the underside still looks great after a salt filled Northern winter. I used fluid film because it is only like $30 a gallon. I used the gun too so I could spray all inside the rockers and through the bed rails. Obviously as you know nothing will totally stop rust. I am basically trying to get my truck to last another 5-7 years before buying a new one. Frequent coats of fluid film over the chassis saver is what I am trying and so far it seems good. I will be putting another coat of fluid film on in fall before the winter again. Once the coat is on it looks like cosmoline is coating the entire underside. It never really dries and is more like a light grease than anything.

You guys won't be disappointed. Be forwarned, it will stick like hell to concrete, so make sure you don't get it on the garage floor. I certainly couldn't get it off (I didn't notice till it dried) It's also incredibly scratch and ding resistant, which made me glad I picked it to use on my suspension and subframe.

MUST add *Dawn* dish soap to the mix too (that cheap stuff is garbage). Ive used it at the shop over everything else for decades. The Uni-First guy used to wonder why we never used the pumice soap until I washed my hands with Dawn in front of him😂🤣
Dawn does an awesome job. It’s what they use to degrease bridges, as it’s environmentally friendly. It’s also used to clean animals after an oil spill. It’s definitely awesome stuff and very cheap.
Would like to see Super Clean in those test
I did the bottom of my 90 Cavalier Z24 with that back around 2005. Red rusty metal primer with black enamel after a fairly complete sandblast ( on my back masked up the ugly way.). Undercoat sprayed after . By the next winter it was ugly with rust worse than before. I’d used rust oleum for many years prior to their taking the lead out of it with great results. Nowadays I annually spray the base and tape door drains let soak with 2” deep mix of used ATF / bar n chain oil and cheap petroleum jelly. It’s messy but seems to stop rust in its tracks as well as can be expected even in areas that can’t be gotten at .
Beyond that all you can do is move south because the rust always wins in the end
I appreciate how you fill all of your time with useful information. Many utubes of this sort would have been 3 times as long and not as informative.

I'm glad to see the POR-15 work so well. I used Rustoleum Rust Reformer on my Jeep's underbody and after one winter it got pretty bad with rust. This April I painted on the POR-15 and after a bunch of beach sand, rain, and mud it's looks like the day I painted it. I am curious how the road salt this winter will treat it!
If you got the one with aluminum powder in it you should be pretty good. The black ones are no where near as good.

Por-15 long term has proved to be total junk, really disappointed.
Trying aqua steel rust converter and lanoguard this time.
I live in the north east and used POR-15. It looked good for a few years but after that the rust came through. It must have been holding the rust underneath until it got so bad it flaked off. I regretted putting it on my frame because it just excelled the rot on the frame.
I use fluid film now on all my vehicles, seems to work the best for preventing rust from starting.

Thanks for this excellent review. I was considering what product I should use to treat my rusty Chevy frame. I was leaning towards POR-15 anyways due to past experience/conversations with friends in the auto body industry. I think this review has sealed the deal
POR-15 claiming that's it's permanent is no lie. I used their 3 part system years back and that stuff is mean.
Great testing as always!
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Yep, I used their system to reline the interior of a 20 gallon gas tank. Brilliant stuff.
I can also give a long term review of POR-15. I used it about 20+ years ago on an old car frame to stop it from rusting.. It still looks great with no rust.
The old "you get what you pay for" seems to have held true on this one.
Thanks Todd. Great testing as usual.

POR stands for paint over rust
Another great video! Confirmed my experience with POR-15 being one of the best around. Would love to see an eval with Evaporust followed by scrape/paint.
Same!
Evaporust is not the same as a rust encapsulator. It is meant to return rusty metal to a bare metal if submerged.

I Used Por 15 on a light duty dump truck dump bed with great, awesome results. All did was use a powered wire wheel to remove light rust, cleaned the bed with compressed air and then wiped down with a degreaser, cleaner and allowed to dry well. I spread the Por 15 very thin with a brush and roller and shockingly it held up very well to loads of Class five rock, gravel bing dumped on it. I will be doing the same project afain with another dump truck next week using Por 15 again. If POR 15 gets on your skin its almost impossible to remove, trust me..

For the impact tests, to be more valid... you need to do at least 3 shots at each sample, and average the results. LOVE your tests! I use POR 15 and you do NOT want to get it on your hands. It is a BEAR to remove! lol
It will come off after about a week.
Thanks so much! Thanks for the constructive feedback.

I would like to see some tests for different types of fishing lines: monofilament, fluorocarbon and braided. Knot strength, knick resistance, tensile strength, twist resistance and age control. Different knots and line weights. So many options, it's hard to choose.
Thanks for the suggestions.
@@ProjectFarm Another vote for fishing line!
Berkley has videos on knot strength.
Basically, if you're using a braid you use a palomar or modified palomar knot, and every one of them will exceed the test rating.
If you're using a mono or flourocarbon, use a trilene knot and you'll exceed the test rating.
I have used many, many lines. I've had some I loved for their strength and abrasion resistance, but they wind knotted and were a pain when trying to cast on windy days. Mono that worked amazing for a few months, then took a set and turned into a big ball of shit trying to go through the guides.
I have it narrowed down to just a few that stay in the boat now. Sensation in 6,8,10 lb for various size spinning reels and leader. Basic standard fireline in 6 and 10 lb for various size reels. 30lb braid for the baitcasters that I'll be using to flip and drop in trees and heavy weeds. And lastly 10-12lb flourocarbon for leader material if you need that weightless plastic worm to jig slower, or you can't get away from those slimey pike.
Maybe he don't fish.
The POR 15 is amazing. I used it on my 66 Chevelle SS for when I did a frame off restoration for the frame and under body and over 20 years later it still looks perfect ...no rust no chips. Looks as good as when I first did it. This stuff is the best !!!! And when you brush it on it smooths out like if you sprayed it on. A can of it covers a large area so it actually works out cheaper than anything else.

But while control of coating thickness would certainly be a variable, I don't know who that would be factored out especially when comparing spray vs. brush-on products. Keep up the outstanding work!!
I've used the eastwood internal frame coating/fluid film on my one car that has never seen a winter since I bought it used. I have no complaints. I painted the frame the best I could with por15. No more rust has popped out. It wasn't bubbly rust just surface. Best looking midwest car its age around. Trying woolwax now on my winter/family hauling truck. Por15 is great just not in the sun.
Definitely hates the sun. I used a bit on my bumper and it turned transparent and has rust coming through.
Need to use the uv stable top coat if exposed to the sun
@@craigwiess1656 Very true, I have heard of some people rattle can spraying por15 while it was still tacky and had good results just using normal rustoleum to keep it from becoming chalky.
Always the best sir. Thanks for your time!
Thanks and you are welcome!
Always love and appreciate your testing vids...please the content coming :D it is really helpful to making informed decisions on these products :D
Thanks, will do!
I've been using Eastwood for years on all of my projects, and it holds up really good for the long term. One nice thing is they have a version with a 3ft whip that you can spray the inside of the frame, and not just the outside.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@ProjectFarm also another thing to take into consideration.
You can very easily touch up Eastwood by just spraying more. POR15, doesn't let you do that.
@@DaffyDuc69 Not only that but you're not able to use POR 15on bare metal whereas you can with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator
Recently I’ve used the Eastwood rust encapsulator and I really like that plastic tube / spray nozzle configuration.
Thanks Todd for doing this. I am working on my Jeep to slow/stop the rust inside and outside the frame, underneath the body and even inside the doors. This helps. I owe you a Klondike ice cream bar.
lol. Thanks in advance for the ice cream bar!
All the por 15 products are amazing. I would recommend you look into por 15 frame paint for your project as well. It's a high solids paint that is very durable. I used it on the floor of a car that doesn't have carpet over it and it's been 2 years and there isn't a scratch or sign of rust.
@@1leafsfan6 Thank you for the recommendation. It's already on order from Amazon. I think they must love Todd's channel.
There's no stopping, only slowing. One thing that has to be made more apparent with all rust control products is that coating it with something will NEVER be a 100% solution. The only real fix is to media blast it down to bare metal and coat it fresh.
Man I watched this after I painted the underside of my van with rustoleums rust reformer and a top layer of Rustoleums undercarriage paint and now I am very glad that I went with that option. Great work showing the products.
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
Another outstanding test, you always do a great job!
Thanks and you are welcome!
Perfect timing...I have two landing gear on my trailer rusting I was prepping to paint...thank you as always for helping us find the best tested solutions.
Glad to hear!
This test was So Awesome..i just signed up for Patreon for $2 Aussie dollars per month, which is huge for me because i'm a free-loading jerk, usually. Massive respect for your amazing techniques and presentation. Great work, as always..... *THANKS!!* PS- you got me for 12mths minimum
Thanks so much! Thanks for becoming a Patreon! Glad you enjoy the videos!
I'm going to be doing some minor rust repair on my Sprinter this spring, I bought POR-15 last year and found it very messy to work with and am glad I made the right choice. Thank you for all your work. Keep it up!
Thanks and will do!
Thanks my guy! This was a lot of work for you and totally a needed video for us repair guys
You are welcome!
As others have mentioned, the can of POR 15 will cover a lot of area. A lot of the weight in the spray products is propellant, so I would bet there is much less total coverage for any of the spray products. Perhaps weighing the cans before and after application would provide useful comparative data about the cost per application, or an estimate on total area that can be covered with each product.
Thanks for the feedback.
Great! Perfect timing, just started looking for a good product. Thanks!!!
Thank you and hope you enjoy the video!
@@ProjectFarm I always do, you've saved me lot's of time and money.
I had to look this up again for some rust issue. Thanks again.
You are welcome!
You have made many helpful videos, this among them! Thank you, sir.
You are welcome!
This confirms my decision to use Rust Reformer on my truck restoration projects because of budget. Dries quickly and is paintable. All the parts I’ve used this on over the years are still looking awesome and I still have money for the rest of the parts needed. Awesome video as always! 🙌🏼
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.
I expected por15 to win going into the video, as I've used it and it's good stuff. I was thoroughly impressed by how well the Rustoleum performed with how cheap it is compared to some of the others. Thanks for the great content!
You are welcome!
your testing methods are fantastic ! the makers of these products should be paying you for this. I used the rustoleum on my truck frame about 7 months ago and it is doing fine.
Thanks! Great to hear the rustoleum worked out for you!
Well done, sir. Nice video. Thank you!
