Je suis un élève de 4 professeurs parmi les bourbakistes : Henri Cartan, Schwartz, Chevalley, Pierre Samuel, Jacques Cartier. Ceux qui ont eu de loin le plus grand impact sur moi sont Cartan et Chevalley. Mon DEA et ma thèse étaient avec Chevalley précisément. Grothendieck, bien qu'il ne m'a pas encadré, était pour quelque chose dans ma formation puisque je travaillais sur des objets mathématiques créés par lui.
Sans le moindre doute, les livres de Bourbaki ne sont pas destinés aux étudiants des premières années d'université. Ce sont des livres pour futurs enseignants chercheurs en mathématiques, et surtout en mathématiques pures. Je suis enseignant à l'université, et les livres de Bourbaki me servent pour fabriquer des exercices et des sujets d'examen. Bien entendu, pour la recherche proprement dite, les livres de Bourbaki ne suffisent pas du tout, même quand il s'agit de mathématiques pures. D'ailleurs aucun document ne suffit pour la recherche. Il en faut plusieurs, des dizaines en plus des articles, vieux et récents.
Questions de pédagogie : Cartan est un brilliant pédagogue et c'est un réel plaisir de travailler son cours à partir de ses polycopiéss et mes notes manuscrites et des références qu'il nous indique. Il encadre très bien ses assistants également. Schwartz était amusant en amphi, mais sa pédagogie n'était pas du tout efficace.
Avec Chevalley, on apprend à travailler dur pour surmonter des obstacles. Il est en permanence concret et abstrait et refuse par tempérament de contourner des obstacles. Il veut toujours les aplatir. Une fois, dans la rédaction de ma thèse, il s'est mis en colère contre moi parce que j'ai contourné une difficulté de calcul en faisant appel à un espace isomorphe à l'espace considéré initialement. Il pensait que je ratais peut-être quelque phénomène intéressant. Quelques minutes après, il a accepté ma démarche..
Question mathématiques appliquées :
Durant l'après guerre mondiale, les mathematiciens ont refusé en majorité et systématiquement toute recherche à but militaire. Grothendieck en particulier est particulièrement hostile.
Question de septisisme des étudiants et des critiques anti-bourbakistes:
Tout le long de mes études et recherches, j'ai senti que je suis '' largué '' par rapport à certains de mes camarades, notamment ceux de l'ENS. Heureusement j'avais conscience qu'ils bénéficiaient d'accès facile et rapide à tous les documents alors que moi, je devais surmonter plein d'obstacles pour faire de la bibliographie. Jussieu, jusqu'aux débuts des années 70 est resté sans bibliothèque mathématique. Il fallait aller à Sainte Geneviève, à la Sorbonne pour y trouver une place assise et quelques vieux livres de mathématiques. C'est cette conscience là qui m'a permis de tenir bon.. Accéder à des documents de '' vulgarisation mathématique'', d' aperçus sur les applications industrielles ou autres était absolument impossible.

Il ne faut pas oublier la discussion sur la nécessité de nettoyer les œuvres mathématiques et de mettre de l'ordre dans la science mathématique avancée notamment par Hilbert et son programme. Bourbaki est une réponse française à cette exigence des mathématiciens du monde
J'ai perdu mes mots , ce texte m'a généré un flux d'émotions mix en me rappelant des moments nostalgiques surtout quand j'ai découvert la première fois la collection BOURBAKI

Please note that Jordan’s Cours d’Anlayse was the same book that G. H. Hardy said enabled him to initiate into the culture of mathematics. Quoting from A Mathematician’s Apology, “My eyes were first opened by Professor Love who taught me for a few terms and gave me my first serious conception of analysis. But the great debt which I owe to him - for he was after all primarily an applied mathematician - was his advice to read Jordan’s famous Course d’analyse; and I shall never forget the astonishment with which I read that remarkable work, the first inspiration for so many mathematicians of my generation, and learnt for the first time as I read it what mathematics really meant”.

Ce que je retiens de cet échange c’est que l’intention de Bourbaki est de créer des livres facilitant la construction de structures mathématiques en présentant dans un langage de réunification les structures mathématiques bien connues de tous. Pour arriver à ce résultat ils ont du monter un tout petit peu en abstraction; ce qui vraisemblablement n’a pas été apprécié par tous.
ca a encourage tout le monde a mettre un point d honneur a la rigueur dans les maths du 20eme siecles, je dirais que c;est pour cela que c est une contribution majeure

Je suis tombé sur Théorie des Ensembles à la bibliothèque de la Vilette lorsque j'étais lycéen. J'ai découvert que le raisonnement mathématique pouvait être entièrement réduit - en théorie - à sa syntaxe, ce qui m'a fasciné. Cela m'a d'ailleurs incité à rédiger plus rigoureusement mes démonstrations.

Ben... pas sûr de comprendre ce à quoi vous faites référence (que voulez-vous dire précisément ? vous pensez à Gödel ?).
Ce que vous dites me paraît évident : ce qui est bien conçu s'énonce clairement. S'il en était autrement (si l'on ne pouvait pas tirer complètement partie de la syntaxe de la "langue mathématique" pour raisonner), il n'y aurait plus de raisonnement mathématique digne de ce nom. Bref, pour tout ce qui est démontrable (je n'ai pas dit simplement "vrai" bien sûr), il existe une démonstration syntaxiquement impeccable s'appuyant (par exemple) sur la théorie ZFC+axiome du choix et qui concrètement/en pratique, va s'écrire (encore par exemple) avec le calcul des prédicats... Mais j'ai l'impression de dire des évidences sans intérêt...

Though Bourbaki was founded together by Andre Weil and Henri Cartan, we have to note that Cartan (b. 1904) was already two years older than Weil (b. 1906), but entered the Ecole Normale Superior one year later than Weil did in 1922. Moreover, Henri Cartan himself has said that his illustrious mathematician father Élie Cartan never tried to persuade Henri to take up mathematics as a career. Then again, it was on Weil’s suggestion that he pursue researches in several complex variables that Henri spent his entire research career primarily on this subject.
Compared with this slightly passive demeanor of Henri Cartan, we have to remember that Andre Weil was personally groomed, from an early age of 16, by Jacques Hadamard to be the pre-eminent mathematician of the new post world war I generation. By selecting mathematics books for Weil to read, and suggesting travel plans throughout Europe for Weil to meet with mathematicians of the highest calibre, and holding weekly seminars at his house where latest research papers were studied and presented, Hadamard had trained Andre Weil to be a highly driven and capable mathematician equipped with all the culture and intelligence that Western Civilization had to offer.

Quel grand génie...Tout est précis.. Ça m'a beaucoup servi. J'en ai lu la partie algębre en parallęle ave le Livre de Godement: Cours d'algebre. Godement donne l'impression de perçer et y rester sur le point étudié..Reinvente tout ouvre l'appétit pour relire encore!
. Dixmier donne l'impression de vouloir vite quitter en vous annonçant: ne chercher pas à y ajouter autre chose juste assimiler,construire bâtir.C'est un chef d'oeuvre. A prendre tel quel!Il inculque et grave les maths à jamais! Il va générer les idées mathématiques que vous trouverez ailleurs!
La partie Analyse d'un style trés léger dissippant la fausse peur que sent les étudiants dans les manuels d'Analyse.
Enfin, Je regarde l'architecture de Dixmier dés le début s'exquisser graduellement,se construit de bas en haut tel un monument splendide qu'on admire de tous les côtés

Serre aprés avoir forcé la porte de Bourbaki a verrouillé ses livres face aux lecteurs! Pardon: Avis personnel dû à mes incapacités!
Jacques Dixmier a été mon prof de maths en section Maths/Physique (MP) les deux années de premier cycle à Jussieu. Il était d'une clarté exemplaire et je comprenais tout ce qu'il enseignait sans aucun effort. C'était un très grand pédagogue. J'aimais déjà beaucoup les maths. En première scientifique j'avais 18 de moyenne. J'ai été admis en math sup mais j'ai refusé car je ne voulais faire que des maths. Ensuite j'ai fait de l'informatique théorique (théorie des automates et des langages et je me suis spécialisé dans la sémantique des langage de programmation et, en particulier, la sémantique dénotationnelle. Mon livre de chevet était le livre de Joseph Stoy : Denotational Semantics: The Scott-Strachey Approach to Programming Language Semantics, MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1977. L'enseignement de Jacques Dixmier m'a été d'un très grand secours.
Le groupe Bourbaki a fait un travail considérable et merveilleux. Ceux qui le dénigre n'ont probablement rien compris au sens de leur travail ni, plus généralement, aux mathématiques en général.

Des grands mathématiciens de tt les temps
Jean-Pierre Serre and Alexandre Grothendieck respected Andre Weil greatly, even to the extent of believing Weil to be the incarnation of Krishna. It is for this reason that Grothendieck proposed to Bourbaki that the foundations of mathematics should be re-written using category theory, instead of using set theory as Bourbaki had done in the 1930s. In category theory one deals with objects and morphisms between objects only, whereas with sets one is dealing with elements that are members of a set. These membership issues lead to logical contradictions which had caused a crisis in the foundations of mathematics in the 1930s. However, just b’coz the set theoretic foundations of mathematics are re-worked using category theory, it doesn’t mean that these set theoretic contradictions would go away. Mathematics would continue to have to deal with them. Grothendieck was certainly not unaware of this fact, being the leading mathematician in the world. Yet, still he proposed to work within the confines of category theory.
So, it is a testament to the greatest respect that Grothendieck had for Andre Weil that he proposed to develop mathematical foundation based on category theory, b’coz he envisioned the greater part of his mathematical life would be concentrated on the Weil Conjectures, which had unified number theory and algebraic geometry. Such was the respect and idolism that Andre Weil commanded among his Bourbaki offsprings. But Andre Weil did not agree to change the foundations that Bourbaki had already built on set theory in the 1930s. So Grothendieck left Bourbaki bitterly, after having been a member for a period of 10 years. If Bourbaki had re-written its mathematical foundations in terms of category theory, as proposed by Grothendieck, it would have enabled a global division of labor, where French and other European mathematicians could focus on geometry and analysis, while the mathematical culture in India traditionally based on number theory, algebra and LOGIC could have flourished. This was another way in which the association of Andre Weil with India between 1930 and 1932 caused a set back to Indian mathematics by more than 100 years, from which it is yet to recover.

@@maitreyo137 Srinivasan Ramanujan (1887-1920) is widely ackonwledged to be the greatest mathematician in the 20th/21st centuries. As exemplified by Ramanujan, engaging in research-level activities in mathematics is a highly individual experience, if one went by the Indian tradition. However, during the period 1933 - 75, the Bourbaki conferences were re-defining the culture of mathematics as an artifact of European/Western civilization, in which groups of researchers gather together in annual conferences to engage in intense, deep discussions in mathematics. Being a poor country, India could not afford such modes of research activities where permanently tenured academic researchers could engage in deep, original research as a group activity. There are many other ways in which Indian math suffered a setback by 100+ years because of the mediocre culture of mathematics that Bourbaki promoted. In this short passage, I’m giving just one of the main reasons. Hope this clarifies.

@@maitreyo137 No, Serre was in the second generation of Bourbaki. The influence of Bourbaki culture on India started with Andre Weil, one of the original founders of Bourbaki. Andre Weil actually spent a year-and-a-half (1930-32) in India and was deeply attached to Indian religious traditions. For a period of about 70 years, starting from 1933 and extending through multiple generations of Bourbaki, Indian researchers had to abandon their own traditions of mathematics and had to follow the rules set by the European/Western powers, which was overwhelmingly influenced by Bourbaki’s view of mathematics.

Alain Connes is quite mistaken in his opening comments that the Bourbaki ethos was to sacrifice their individual egos. The three older Bourbakians here (apart from Alain Connes himself) - Jean-Pierre Serre, Jacques Diximier and Pierre Cartier - attended Bourbaki seminars mostly out of self-interest. Their self-interest was to bring themselves to the cutting-edge knowledge in mathematics, which the earlier generation of Bourbaki had decisively established. The ethos of suppression of the individual ego, in contribution to a larger common ideal was propounded by Andre Weil. Andre Weil was able to establish a decisive advantage in his mathematical knowledge, among all his Ecole Normale collegemates, because of his early training and personal grooming by Jacques Hadamard.
Bourbaki was founded by Andre Weil and Henri Cartan, when they were together at the University of Strasbourg. This was immediately after Andre Weil came back from India. As an aside, I state here that Andre Weil’s association with India during the period January 1930 to May 1932 caused a setback to the mathematical culture in India by more than 100 years. Anyways, let us leave that aside for now. Andre Weil was introduced to Jacques Hadamard at a very early age, and not long afterwards regularly attended the Hadamard seminar.
Quoting from his autobiography, “It is true that, in the meantime, I had become acquainted with Grevy, and then with Hadamard, and my future plans were taking shape. … … … All those who were acquainted with Hadamard know that until the end of his very long life, he retained an extraordinary freshness of mind and character: in many respects, his reactions remained those of a fourteen-year-old boy. His kindness knew no bounds. The warmth with which Hadamard received me in 1921 [note: Andre Weil would have been just a 15-year old boy in 1921] eliminated all distance between us. He seemed to me more like a peer, infinitely more knowledgeable but hardly any older; he needed no effort at all to make himself accessible to me. Soon he had the opportunity to do me a favor that had a decisive effect on my future. Every year the Lycée Saint Louis awarded an endowment prize to the best student in 'math. elem'. The prize consisted of the equivalent in books of the annual interest of the endowment fund. I was allowed to choose those books myself, and sought Hadamard’s advice on the selection. Thus it was that at the annual 'solemn award ceremony' (any one who attended a French lycee at the time can picture the scene) I received Jordan’s three-volume Cours d’Analyse and Thomson and Tait’s two-volume Treatise of Natural Philosophy. Thanks to Hadamard, I learnt analysis from Jordan (infinitely better than learning it from Goursat as most of my classmates did) and I was initiated into differential geometry by Thomson and Tait. Naturally I did not read these hefty volumes immediately; I think, however, that I did begin with Jordan the following year."

Si tu veux te procurer les écrits de bourbaki tu peux en trouver sur Amazon à des prix relativement élevés 50 euros le livres mais effectivement le contenu est riches en mathématiques seulement les étudiants en mathématiques physique ou sciences de l’ingénieur niveau master peuvent comprendre tout dépend de ton niveau...
J'ai trouvé les 28 volumes au prix de 1095€ ça fait un peu chères mais j'aimerais savoir si c'est toujours actuelle le contenu des livres et que ce que j'en pourrait en retirer

@@CCc-ui7wb si tu veux le groupe bourbaki a été fondé sur par ses grand mathématicien français en vue de reprendre les mathématiques dans leur fondements et de leurs donner des bases extraordinairement solides que se soit pour la théories dés ensembles la géométrie algébrique et l’analyse franchement si tu est comme moi passionné de mathématiques et que tu veux te donner le privilège de lire bourbaki sache qu’il faut d’abord que tu soit un minimum caler dans le sujet par exemples pour les morphismes de groupes en algèbre certes difficile à comprendre mais ça reste un sujets toute à fait passionnant.
Si tu comprend bourbaki les maths d’aujourd’hui C’est du pipi de chat clairement ahaha

This was the key ingredient missing from other modes of organization found within Western Civilization.

Les plus grands scientifiques sont extremenent encrés, habituelement. C'est du au fait notamment qu ils ont su gardé leur esprit d enfant ainsi que la naivete et l emerveillement quon a dans la jeunesse, qui permet de franchir tous les murs
Bourbaki et l'égo de côté ? C'est bien la première fois que j'entends Alain Connes dire une sottise (faut dire que je ne comprends pas la plupart de ce qu'il dit hormis lorsqu'il vulgarise "merveilleusement" pour reprendre un adverbe qu'il affectionne, avec légèreté et humour) !
Connes parlent entre eux lors des séminaires je pense.

J’ai été étudiante aux cours de Maths1 de Monsieur Jacques Dixmier, dont j’ai beaucoup apprécié les cours, si clairs, rigoureux, et dont nous avions tout compris en sortant de son exposé.
J’ai aussi suivi les cours de Messieurs Cartan, Dubreil et Chevalley. A la même époque.

1) India carries important lessons for the future of mathematics in the 21st century. Buddhism was born in India, during ancient times. However, there is hardly any followers of Buddhism in India today. Buddha himself was born as a prince in the aristocratic classes among the princely states of India. Buddhism quickly spread among the ruling classes in India. Its principles and beliefs promoted the centralization of knowledge and power, and repudiation of any individual experience. Whereas the native Hinduism was practiced by the common people, among whom the Brahmins survived by providing priestly services during marriages, burial and temple worship. Then Buddhism spread even faster into China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, and other East Asian countries, while the Brahmins had to endure poverty and hunger. However, over a period of centuries, people in India realized that Buddhism is just a fashionable template of glamorous beliefs and customs fit for quickly converting entire nations during their times of prosperity and yet having no original thought content. So Buddhism left India's shores. Similarly, Bourbaki is a highly templatized, stylized treatment of mathematics without any deep content. In the 21st century, Indian culture would expose the low class and fraudulent nature of the ancestor worshipping Bourbaki cult.
2) I'm not the first mathematician, of global repute, who started obsessing with India and its associated culture. As early as 1930, Andre Weil was willing to invest his entire professional career in India, when he took up a position as a Professor at Aligarh Muslim University near Lucknow, India. Andre Weil was willing leave the cultural centers of European civilization. Why? In 1930, India was considered a colonial backwater, among the European intelligentsia. Yet, Andre Weil knew which way his bread was buttered. Even in 1930, Weil knew well the hypocritical and self-serving lifestyle of the European intellectual. All that talk of India being a backwater was just propaganda, Andre Weil realized, b'coz he knew from his native Jewish faith in the Old Testament scriptures, that India was where Jews went to, in ancient times, seeking refuge from violence and extermination unleashed by the European colonizers and persecutors.
3) Even though Andre Weil was deeply respectful of India and its culture, and similarly Grothendieck in his reclusive years was deeply involved with Eastern mysticism of J. Krishnamurthi and Ramakrishna and writings of Gandhi, however, it was Jean-Pierre Serre that is responsible for the current state of mathematics, where there is a prolonged break between the West and Indian culture. At every opportunity, Serre leaped up to take visiting positions at Harvard and Princeton in America, without showing similar enthusiasm to associate with India. Serre thought he had bet on the right horse. But that is the problem with history. Judgment of history is inescapable. With hindsight, mathematicians in the 21st century will realize that Serre has not done anything original in mathematics. Serre is more like a Buddhist scribe who installed himself in the centers of high culture in ancient Buddhist times. Serre's choice of associating with Harvard and Princeton, foregoing earlier devotion shown by Andre Weil to India, was what instituted an attitude of scepticism on India, among the second and later generations of Bourbaki. It is with this insolent attitude that you are asking if I'm Indian, as if being aware of deep importance of India to global mathematical research today should be of concern only to Indian, but not to Westerners like yourself.
4) What do you think I am? Vietnamese, Ecuadorian? I am Indian by birth, but I have been living in the United States for more than 25 years. I also have a doctoral degree in mathematics from an accredited university in the U.S. As a mathematician, I am as global and international in scope as any Westerner like yourself. But going beyond that, I have uniquely a deep understanding of the importance of Indian culture for mathematical research in the 21st century. I have been communicating my discoveries to mathematicians in leading American universities for many years. When I started my communications in 2008, there were no Fields Medallists of Indian origin, even though it had been 72 years since the first Fields medals were given to Lars Ahlfors and Jesse Douglas in 1936. After my communications started, Fields medals were given back-to-back, in 2014 and 2018, to two mathematicians of Indian origin. Corruption, nepotism and fraudulence of Bourbaki is getting exposed. No escape! Verdict of history is inescapable!

@@rvpl06 la méthode bourbarki a été un échec pedagogique car on apprenait à utiliser les concepts sans savoir à quoi il servait : les applications et les fonctions ont été confondus, les espaces affines et vectoriels aussi et les règles de calcul de vecteur ont été formulés comme un algèbre théorique sans lien avec des cas concrets, le théorème de thalès était démontré sans utiliser une pratique et sans avoir bien compris les règles de proportions, on ne savait en troisième calcul le périmètre ou la surface d'un triangle mais on utiliser un langage spécial comme segment, bissectrice, repère orthonormé,

Non vous faites erreur, Bourbaki n'a jamais souhaité la reforme des maths modernes de l'enseignement au collège et au lycée. Le travail de Bourbaki est un travail de refonte qui s'adressait aux mathématiciens, pas aux élèves qui débutent.
Malheureusement l'amalgame est souvent fait entre Bourbaki et la réforme de l'enseignement des maths modernes.
