Thanks for another excellent video! The biggest takeaway for me is the lack of software customization. I hope they improve this. I understand the appeal of presets, but we should be able to tweak those presets to our liking thereafter.

  • @adambuzzeo

Oh my lord the flex. I standby my original comment about them just starting over from scratch and making an optional adapter for older wheels. Even if you don't notice it during a race that doesn't mean it's not happening, with the entire QR being plastic that does not bode well for longevity. Thanks for everything you do Karl, you helped me a lot especially in the beginning of my journey.

    • @Leynad778
      @Leynad778 Год назад +5

By far the most flex seems to come from the wheel itself which has probably a shaft made of far cheaper plastic than the Cf-Nylon and seems the weakest link. Thrustmaster should've released a better wheel with the base for optional purchase and to show what this QR is really capable of. It might me better than the Fanatec QR after all, even that's not a benchmark😛

@@BoosiveFPV I would not say terrible, but it does not seem great as I would have expected for the money. It would have been okay or even great with like 2 wheels specifics for this wheel base, one like round and one formula/GT3 style. CSL DD, came out 2 years (?) or something ago. WAY better and cheaper. FFB noticeable less powerful, ok, but I don't like more than 10 nm average.

So I really enjoyed the video. I wanted to add that I just received my T818 about six days. And I have seen another review that complained about the amount of flex between the wheel and the quick release. Weirdly I don't have any. My quick-release adapter fits tight and it does not move when it's attached to the base. 🤷

Thank you so much Karl. I only play console, so this wouldn’t be something I could use anyway, but if they bring something out for console, I don’t think it’ll be much better than this. Pass from me.
Even though Logitech charges 1K for their wheelbase it does come with
    1) A wheel with magnetic shifters
    2) a much much better quick release, can’t even compare them, and
    3) seemingly a much better driving experience from what reviews tells me.
So that’s where I’m leaning at the moment, maybe I’ll look into Asetek if they make theirs console compatible 😊

It's gonna be interesting to see what they will realise this year for t818 base. Thanks for the review Karl. I use it now for a week and enjoy it very much for ACC, AMS2,R3E,AC and DR. Weak point of TM rims is that the screws and bolts loosen after a while, introducing flex. Glad I am not the only other person with the extreme oscillation problem. Several titles I tried worked well, but those that didn't... was a lot of work to smooth it out and it doesn't feel 100%. The original AC was probably the best experience, but it still felt a bit muddy in places where it shouldn't. Just didn't feel all that crisp (if that is a term to be applied to FFB). DiRT Rally 2.0 was really bad out of the box. It was the one where I had the extreme oscillation problem, and even a very small input was translated into extreme swings. It was undrivable. I was able to counteract that with increasing the deadzone to 3 in the DR2.0 control panel, put it to Performance preset in TM control, and then recalibrate it about 4 times. It got the issue under control, but I lost a lot of definition in the FFB and steering was not nearly as precise as I had it with my previous TS-PC. Games like Forza Horizon 4 also exhibited this extreme oscillation and massive input reporting with slight wheel changes. I wonder if this isn't a driver and firmware issue with how it is measuring the vertical/0% angle of the wheel. I'm hoping it is firmware, because if their sensing ability at vertical is not right at the hardware level...
Anyway, not entirely pleased with the performance of this unit for the money paid. The extra it cost to get the secondary base for permanent mounting is another big miss by TM.

Those 4 M6 bolt holes on the T818 designed to be used to attach one of the two mounting brackets available (table mount or rig mount), and not to attach directly to your rig, which is why they have non standard measurements.
With ACC Kunos introduced an additional damping setting with 1.8 which should help mitigate those oscillations. I'd recommend setting it at around 50% and work from there with a DD wheel - assuming you haven't already done so.
It's a shame. I was really hoping this wheelbase was going to be good as I've got a few TM wheels, and I'm not overly happy with my Simucube - it's not consistent enough across titles and some titles just feel bad with it.

I have no major oscillations in ACC with ingame 55% force, 0 damp, 100 dyn damp, 0 road feel, and driver at 33% damp and extreme mode; going to performance mode I felt I needed at least 50% damper to minimize the oscillations. In my experience doing the damper in driver was better than doing it in game.
I do disagree with the extreme feeling like an overdriven mode, which some other reviewers have mentioned as well, and feel the other modes to be increasingly smoothed out while the extreme is giving the appropriate jolt when going over a sausage at 200kph instead of a bump. I am using only 69% force though since I'm coming from a T300 and as such didn't feel the need to max this one out on power, so that could be a factor with my differing experience of extreme mode over the 100% force tests.
I do also notice the vibration of the motor when sitting idle, though I've found that once you launch a game and the base is getting an FFB signal, that goes away just like with rotating it while idle. Maybe has something to do with the lack of signal while idle, and disappearing after rotation due to the base starting to apply the autocenter it has when a game isn't running. It is a weird one to be sure.

Its very noticeable in open wheel cars. The forcefeedback is an improvement from the TS PC racer but I'm not pleased with how the wheel rim flex's. I thought about getting a more expensive wheel base and then changed my mind. Why? None of the sim racing games are perfect. Some car physics feel better than others. There's too much inconsistencies in various titles.

@@KarlGosling I'm on fanatec DD1 and in Dirt rally 2.0 I need to use Wheel Friction about 50-100+% value of self align torque (with natural friction 1%, natural inertia 8% in base). Example I have DD1 base limited to 10Nm(67% in Linear-mode) and in game Self Align Torque is at 50(so about 5.0Nm in use), then Wheel Friction usually between 25-60 (in 4wd as low as 25-30 can be good, in rwd maybe need up to 60 to kill excessive oscillation, and in fwd can maybe use under 25), Tyre Friction 50, Suspension 30 (60% of self align torque value maybe also helps to reduce some of the oscillations).
Since that TM 818 base/software doesn't have natural friction and inertia settings u might have to use even more of Wheel Friction than I do.

I was fed up, this was late to come, so I jumped ship to Simagic with Alpha Mini and FX rim (plus a GTS one I got after): day and night difference.
Proper high quality rims, a professional quick release, a small perfect and solid base, a control software with few quirks but complete and full of options.
TM is behind and this is not even close to looking like it is catching up - even their most premium rim, the SF1000, is a joke compared to decent rims.
Thanks for the review, it felt proper, exhaustive and clear.

So many weird choices with this wheel. Surely including a cockpit mounting plate would be a better move than having every review mention how it can't mount to cockpits without spending extra money or drilling holes. Not waiting until they had a new wheel with the new QR native, in order to show how much less flex there will be. Making the QR adaptors a complete PITA to remove, making you spend even more money to take advantage of the main selling point of this wheelbase, which is to keep using your existing wheels.
After spending the money for the cockpit mount, plus 4 more QR adaptors, it really isn't that much of a deal to stick in the TM ecosystem vs selling my current wheels and hopping into a new one. It's a shame because it sounds like the FFB itself is great from most reviews

The highest powered wheel I've tried is the Logi DD and I also experienced this effect. My Thrust TX, PXN V10, G920, Fanatec belt wheels, and even my buddies CSL DD 8nm also all experienced this to a degree. I NEED to know which wheels are smoother in this aspect. I'd like to take my hands off the wheel in games like dirt rally to check my alignment mid rally stage etc. I crash a lot and like to understand what's broken other than the slashed tires 🤣

Please allow me to comment on the word plastic. When good companies design products, they consider many aspects, many of which are not directly seen by consumers, and one of them is safety. Safety is a complicated subject. This tells you why the bumper of expensive cars are also plastic as you can imagine the reasons. A racing wheel with a lot of force is a product with high risk to the consumer. For example connecting the wheel with a part that can break at certain force can be a part of the design for safety. Covering a product with plastic, can be a shield for electrical chock in some cases.
So, using different material may in some cases be used as cost cutting but can also be as a feature for safety. I may argue that making a product covered with strong industrial metal is a marketing over engineering design concept to make people see the product as strong, durable and premium which can sacrifice safety in some cases. We all know the weak part in those well engineered products is software or other internal parts.
So, to me I learned how to differentiate between fake and good designs. There are designs that look so fancy but are stronger and durable when compared to designs that are tanks from outside with weak parts inside them.
Let's enjoy what we buy. It is the entertainment industry and sharing experiences will always.
I bought the T818 and my first impression is awesome. How durable the T818 is? I do not know. Time will tell. Other products from Thrustmaster are very durable.
    Regards.

I can't really agree with all points you mention. The base is optional since not everybody needs it - including both the desktop mount and rig mount at an extra cost would be silly for someone who has a drill.
I have the sf1000 and 488 challenge rim. The sf has zero flex. The 488 a small bit when I really use force to wiggle it, but while racing you simply don't notice it.
The vibration you feel when not moving the wheel comes from the engine, more DD bases have this. As soon as ffb signals are sent this stops, so while playing you don't have this.
Then the ffb itself. I can only compare it with the Moza R9. The T818 has stronger ffb and when setup correctly in the sim itself - the ffb is awesome.
Removing the quickrelease adapter is obviously not what it's made for - there is a reason why that thing comes out so difficult, it has to be very tightly secured so you don't have flex. So yes, for each rim you have you buy the 35,- adapator so you can switch the wheel in 5 seconds.
And about the flex - Barry didn't insert the screw in the quickrelease, another youtuber did a review with a betaversion of the adapter which did have a huge flex. So I think the whole flex discussion is a bit overblown - there is no flex during normal play unless you forcefully wiggle the wheel.
