10 great bands that immediately come to my mind... The Byrds The Velvet Underground Sonic Youth The Stooges Fugazi Love Canned Heat Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band The Doors The Sonics
That’s a good list, and as you said, there could be several other good lists. For mine i’d like to mention: Grand Funk Railroad ZZ Top The Stooges Ramones Talking Heads New York Dolls Green On Red Giant Sand The Velvet Underground The Seeds This list is for this week, and it’s in no particular order. Just bands i love.
Interesting list, Adam. I'm surprised that both this list and the British one basically ignored punk, snubbing first The Clash and The Sex Pistols, and then The Ramones. Also, I think Talking Heads are more influential than REM. I don't have a problem with REM being on there, but only if my beloved Heads are a few notches higher! And Steely Dan! I think they deserve a spot just based on how beloved they are, attracting fans of multiple genres. Who doesn't love Steely Dan? But hey, it's your list, and it's a good one, and I admire the work it must have taken in putting it together. I'm looking forward to the day when you compile a Lou Reed and/or Velvet Underground ranking. I'm in the minority in that I actually prefer Lou's solo career, especially from the early 80s to the turn of the century, I think he qualifies as one of the great American songwriters. So please consider that idea, if you haven't already.
There are a lot of American bands I'm supposed to like, but they rarely cross from liked to loved. Looking at my list compiled over the last 13 months of the albums I've been playing, shows the following list of American bands 1 Steely Dan 2 Tedeschi Trucks Band 3 Grin 4 R.E.M. 5 Eagles 6 Cate Brothers 7 Fountains Of Wayne 8 Jim Carroll Band 9 Lord Huron 10 Television On the positive side, it's unique to me and it shows that I'm not as stuck in the '70s as the British list. But it also shows that I don't love those cool bands like The Velvet Underground etc. In terms of their places in my overall listings, Steely Dan were 6th, Tedeschi Trucks 17th, Grin 32nd and in tenth place, Television were 88th. The bands that I'm a little surprised that didn't make it are Funkadelic and the Pixies.
I was surprised how badly the American bands fared in my plays, so I went back to see what it looked like in terms of albums. All the eleven albums below are in my top 100 most played albums, at the moment. 1 The Royal Scam - Steely Dan 2 Let Me Get By - Tedeschi Trucks Band 3 The Very Best of Grin - Grin 4 Automatic For The People - R.E.M. 5 Can't Buy A Thrill - Steely Dan 6 Catholic Boy - The Jim Carroll Band 7 Marquee Moon - Television 8= Countdown To Ecstacy - Steely Dan 8= Katy Lied - Steely Dan 8= Revelator - Tedeschi Trucks Band 11 Hotel California - Eagles Arguably, The Jim Carroll band falls into the same category as Springsteen, Petty, Seger etc, but it's an album that deserves more attention, as it sounds like a cross between Television and Lou Reed.
1. Tom Petty/Heartbreakers 2. Van Halen 3. Eagles 4. Doors 5. Aerosmith 6. Cars 7. Doobie Brothers 8. CCR 9. Chicago 10. ZZ Top Honorable Mention: R.E.M. I got to keep TPHB at the top spot because they were very much a band even if it was dominated by Tom's vision. Bob Dylan and Springsteen would be up there too if you wanted to include solo artists. I do like your list however!
I agree with the top 3 here. i am also glad that CCR made the list and that Steely Dan got a mention ( even though they would definitely be high up on my personal Top 10 list). Heart are another band that deserve a mention IMO
Honorable mentions. Are you ready Adam? Alice Cooper: Both the band and the man who continued. So many albums. So many styles. So many gems. The legend of the band and the persistant nature of the man later on. I think many take Alice Cooper for granted but when he is gone he will be missed by the many. Blue Öyster Cult: My favorite on this honorable mention list and perhaps overall. To me even the weaker tracks are enjoyable. So much going on and so much personality and variation in their music. I sort of understand why they never became since they are hard to categorize but they are up nosing at #1 American band for me! Dream Theater: Even more extreme than Metallica in several ways and not for everyone but the number one band in their category. Perhaps the first and still going on strong. Journey: Too commerical for being on a list like this? Maybe but there is a reason they still tour despite all their issues and line-up changes. People love the hits. They do also have gems and a sound that might make them the quintessential AOR-band of all time. Kansas: Prog rock was very much a english game. ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd.. Kansas was the american answer and what an answer. They later became sort of a AOR-band and lost lots of cred. Still a good band though who did pick back up on the prog in later years. Pearl Jam: Nirvana was the main grunge band but Pearl Jam has been the most persistent and with time perhaps the one with most artistic value. So odd and commerical at the same time. Not afraid of going totally uncommerical or into new subgenres. Toto: Steely Dans forgotten younger brother in America but has over the years done so much. Because of their AOR-nature they will never really reach the respect they want and deserve but lots to discover. I think many haters could find a few gems if they just took the time. All right. I hope you all have a great rest of your day!
@@rockrecordsreviewed1880 I am rather new to Kansas myself but really liking what I hear. Start from the beginning is my advice. While musically complex I feel a more easy listen than many other prog acts.
Hi Adam. Glad your on mend. Great list as usual. I really would have squeezed Talking Heads in. Even though it was 30 years ago Nirvana may well be the last new band that really made think woah, something really fresh and exciting. My teenage years were long gone but I loved them.
Great list again Adam. Did you omit The Band because they were four parts Canadian ? Can't argue with your top four except I would've had the Allman Brothers very near the top. A wise and knowledgeable choice to go for the Beach Boys at number one though. We could argue that it was mostly all Brian but it wouldn't quite be true, and the music was just so sublime. So many great bands could almost make the cut but this is a damn good ranking. Well done.
For me 10. B52’s 9. The Doors 8. Dinosaur Jr. 7. The Byrds 6. Talking Heads 5. CCR 4. Pixies 3. Pear Jam 2. The Replacements 1. R.E.M. honorable mention- the Connells, Sugar, Sonic Youth , The Feelies, Pavement, Superchunk, and 10000 maniacs
for sales and influence: Kiss. for influence and touring everywhere: Black Flag. the Byrds pretty much started country rock, and their alumni continued to flourish. Captain Beefheart inspired many British punks. Mission of Burma could pretty much be ground zero for US post punk. would I remove any band from your list to insert any of these? no. I could make a case for the Residents, but I think I'd come off as a music snob, so I'll not do that.
The greatest eccentric American musical genius is Frank Zappa, IMO, far beyond Brian Wilson. Also, I much prefer Van Halen over Aerosmith. I like to say that Van Halen's debut is better than any 10 Aerosmith greatest hits that one could put together. Give that exercise a try. Like your videos!
I will not comment on sales in the US and completely ignore that aspect - quality, impact, influence are the only valid criteria for me (otherwise I would end up with those bands I never would voluntarily listen to, that make part of your list). I also tried to pick bands that represent "America" in the way that they could only come from that background and could never be mistaken for British or other. I list 11 because 1 may not qualify as they may be just be recognised as the vehicle of their leader. 11. Santana 10. Tedeschi Trucks Band (the best American Band of the last 15 years) 9. REM 8. Velvet Underground 7. Wussy (may include Ass Ponys) 6. CCR 5. Ramones (4. Mothers of Invention) 3. Lynyrd Skynyrd 2. Allman Brothers Band 1. Doors
Tedeschi Trucks Band are impressive (especially live) and may yet get some kind of breakthrough to a larger audience. Their embrace of a wide variety of American sounds (hard rock, southern rock, soul, gospel, jazz, country, etc.) make them contenders for this list. I'd also agree with Zappa's inclusion. Although the Mothers of Invention only officially lasted for a half-dozen years, their albums (from FREAK OUT to BURNT WEENIE/WEASELS) totally changed what rock could say and do. Their shows were theatre before Bowie, Alice Cooper, KISS & Meatloaf. After the Mothers were disbanded, Zappa continued to draft some of the best musicians around to play a range of music unmatched by any other act on the planet. Although one could debate what constitutes a "rock band", there should be no doubt about the significant contributions the various members brought to Zappa's compositions. Over 50 'official' albums and that number again (and counting) of archival material means that Frank Zappa's legacy will continue to grow. If we're talking influence (over sales), I'd add Pere Ubu as the band that helped add the "art" to art rock of Talking Heads, Devo, Pixies, Radiohead, etc. The diversity of American bands is certainly amazing.
