It was always a real buzz for me to hear that solo back in the early 80s when I was just starting to play guitar myself and I still love that solo today !

Fascinating to hear you talk about these guitar solos Adam. The only thing that would have made it better, would have been if you'd been able to play the solos or snippets of them.

Some of my favourites include (in no particular order) Child in Time (Ritchie Blackmore), No Quarter live from The Song Remains the Same (Jimmy Page), Five String Blues ( Roy Buchanan), The Boston Rag ( Jeff Baxter) This is the Day ( Captain Beefheart) , All Right Now ( Paul Kossof) and Song for Donna (Gary Moore).

Hi, Adam, great video. I'm curious to hear more about your own career as a guitar player, but if you don't want to get too personal in these comments, no problem. Here's a short list. As you said, Led Zep provides myriad possibilities, but instead of the obvious ones, Heartbreaker, Stairway to Heaven, I'm going to go with the haunting jazziness of No Quarter and the stomping jazziness of The Wanton Song. I also have a song from the Pretenders's debut, but it's Mystery Achievement. I love how that song just builds in intensity, and the eviscerating solo is a large part of that effect. Candy's Room by Springsteen (is he the soloist on that song?) is short and fairly simple but oh so powerful, like the Pretenders pick it's instrumental (pun intended!) in the song's buildup in intensity. Oh Neil, there are so many to choose from, often in the same song. How about Cowgirl in the Sand? And of course the multiple solos in Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black), the way they tear up the amps, tear up the listener, literally and figuratively, tear up the very idea of music. I've always been partial to the one in Don't Fear the Reaper by BOC. And I'm going to end with another short, simple guitar solo that never fails to raise my temperature, in a good way, the one in Air by Talking Heads, maybe because a temperature raising guitar solo is the last thing you expect in a Talking Heads song! Have a great day, and thanks so much for your great work.

Absolutely love all the solos you mention there..Mystery Achievement..what a song! Am happy to talk about my music career but I tend not to on here as I like to keep it separate. You can email me at the RRR address (see intro vid) if you'd like to know more..Thanks for the interest.

For me Steve Hackett's guitar solo on Firth of Fifth is the best followed by Highway Star. Hope you do some more top 10's.

Nice list. I like that you mix both classics, some more personal and commerical tracks. The more I look and read about music the less I like elitism. A big overall problem with the world today is that many people get stuck in their own limited area and act totally upon that. Not seeing the broader picture. A good solo is a good solo no matter if it's pop, heavy metal, country, 60's rock or jazz-fusion!

Superb list Adam with many of my favourites. We all love the virtuoso players but some of the early rock and roll guitarists deserve a mention too. The solos on Heartbreak Hotel and Peggy Sue are just two of many great examples. I also like the 'less is more' players like Paul Kossof. The solo on Alright Now is so easy and so familiar but it's perfect. Even simpler is Mick Ralphs solo on Bad Company's Feel Like Making Love, but it's a lesson in touch and tone, and one of my favourites. Mick Taylor was a master at building a solo and Time Waits For No One is a masterclass. Thanks again for a great list and your reasoning behind it. Very well argued.

Great video, I wish you had time to do more. Your approach to music is very inciteful and real. Back in the day I may have chosen something like Free Bird as my favorite solo, and while that's a fine solo, as I've aged, I've come to appreciate the more subtle side of the guitar. I'm actually more a fan of rhythm guitar than I am soloing and I don't worship the so-called classic rock "Guitar Gods" so I'm an anomaly. Anyway, some of my favorite solos include Mick Taylor on Sway, Knopfler on Sultans of Swing.

    • @rockrecordsreviewed1880
      @rockrecordsreviewed1880  2 года назад +1

Freebird is actually one of my least favourite solos, as experienced players will tell you it's just a series of tricks'n'repetitive licks...there's not a great deal of artistry or narrative about it.....so I'm in full agreement with you re subtlety..Mick Taylor is a great player..and Knopfler is a a legend!

@@rockrecordsreviewed1880 I'm not a player, but an avid listener, and while the younger me may have been impressed by the flash of Free Bird, over the years I've come to feel it's rather empty beneath the surface, your explanation is likely the reason why. You mentioned Hotel California and that would rank up there for me as well. I actually LOVE all of the guitar work Felder did with the Eagles. Walsh is the popular choice (and for great reason) but Felder is so overlooked...Brilliant player, IMO.

3: Deep Purple/Ritchie Blackmore - Highway star - Live Version Made In Japan
4: Thin Lizzy/Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson - The Cowboy Song.. Live version
5: Lynyrd Skynyrd/Allen Collins/Steve Gains - Freebird - Live version from One More From the Road .... The deluxe version in particular is unedited and undubbed
    6: AC/DC/Angus Young - Whole Lotta Rosie
    7: Rush/Alex Lifeson - Limelight
8: Judas Priest/Glenn Tipton, KK Downing - Painkiller

my favorite guitar solo has always been Pete Shelley’s 2 note siren solo on “Boredom” by the Buzzcocks. it’s kind of an anti-solo, but I love it. I also really enjoy Jeff Lynne’s searing cry of sorrow on “Showdown” by ELO.

  • @stefanlacny814

Fascinating and very enjoyable, thanks. As a non-player, it's hard for me to rank great guitar solos, but Neil's Cortez the Killer and George's Something have to be up there. Can't argue with Reelin' in the Years either, but then what about Peg, or Kid Charlemagne? Can I go in an alternative direction with the Dan and suggest Walter's beautiful solo on Bad Sneakers?
Sticking with alternatives, for Gilmour I choose Dogs over Comfortably Numb. It sings to me.
For Bowie songs, I'll go for Earl Slick on Station to Station; for King Crimson, it's Fripp on Starless; for Genesis, it's Hackett on The Lamia; for the Mac, it's Buckingham on Go Your Own Way; and I'll finish with one that I'm sure wouldn't make anyone's list, but it's Eric Stewart on 10cc's Rock 'n' Roll Lullaby. It's so sweet.

I'd probably also put something oddball in there, maybe Bill Nelson, Zappa, Bigelf, who did some original thinking ... but hey, gotta put up a straw man to encourage discussion..

Hi Julian, yes I can play Freebird , but I'm not a huge fan of the solo it as it's essentially a collection of tricks and licks with not much arc to it - that said it's dynamic and effective and undoubtedly a classic. Eruption/Eddie were groundbreaking....Crazy Train is Ok but I'm not a huge fan of the tone Randy Rhodes uses, and again it's a lot of licks, I don't hear much arc development (which are the types of solos I like, myself,)....I do mention Sultans of Swing at the end of the video, and Knopfler is a brilliant player with an unmistakable tone and touch - and I couldn't agree more re Jimi Hendrix, who - along with Jeff Beck - is the standard everyone else aspires to....thanks for the list and comments!
