  • my little homage to a rare version of Jaco's composition Havona. This one it was recorded in 1975 earlier than the most famous version of Weather Report's album Heavy Weather. Alex Darqui on piano, Jaco Pastorius fretless jazz bass, and Lenny White on drums. Enjoy

How many times have I entered "havona" into the search bar hoping that something like this existed, only to be assaulted with horrible cover bands or "bass-lesson" butcherings? The WR version is my fave, but this is absolute historical gold and beautiful in it's own right! Thank you!!!!!! (oh, and very tasty video montage as well)

This Version of Havona is I bit of Heaven on earth, Jaco' s up in heaven with a great bunch of players and our good Lord has the best seat in the House"
I miss JP more than I can express in mere words. I feel a kinship with him and I will be honored to walk with him some day in heaven and tell Jaco just how much we all miss and love him. Oh yea I would ask him if I could play his fretless.

I have read that Jaco auditioned for the bass chair in Tony William's New Lifetime band. This would have been recorded a little bit after that time. Great version. Thanks for posting!

As a black man I know that Jaco being Latino definitely was a big part in the flavor of his playing. That being said, he is still my number one favorite bass player ever

Maestro Jaco! Bravo! I think this was one of the piece's they were considering for Jaco's first release. Sounds like Herbie and Lenny White. What a session and no words to describe Jaco except maybe thank you man! And Happy belated Birthday!

interesting recording, if a bit crude and unrehearsed.
zawinul's arrangement of this song, however, and jaco's solo in the other - weather report - edition are simply breathtaking.

Interesting version of this great piece, (as it would most definitely be with these great musicians on this date). But the slower tempo and the solos, which seem to be searching, aren't near the astounding recording of Havona by Weather Report. Fascinating to see how the lives of these great pieces of music with their different arrangements, different players, and different stages of their development can sound.

Thank you for this :) Interesting! nice embryonic version; you can see that the famous version is faithful to the concept but the genius' of Zawinul and Shorter just added that WR flavour. But I must admit that this version is more Jazz, as the WR is more Jazz-Rock, I guess. anyway, thank you!!
