Why We Don't Use Contraception in Our Marriage

  • Jackie and Bobby give their reasons for not using contraception in their marriage. While sharing the Church’s beautiful teaching on sex and marriage, they explain why sex is more than recreational. The biological and theological purpose of sex is to bear children.
    Whenever a husband and wife give themselves to one another freely, totally, faithfully, and fruitfully, they are saying “I do” just as they did on their wedding day.

    “These two meanings or values of marriage (the unitive and procreative) cannot be separated without altering the couple’s spiritual life and compromising the goods of marriage and the future of the family. The conjugal love of man and woman thus stands under the twofold obligation of fidelity and fecundity” (CCC 2363).

    I'm a convert to Catholicism and I recently had to break off my engagement to my fiancée. We could not see eye to eye on issues like contraception, being open to life, abortion and same sex marriage. I tried to get her to watch these videos with me to help her understand where the Church comes from on these issues but she flat out refused. It's been tough for me. I think she is a wonderful person but I also feel that these issues are important to me and I can't compromise on what I believe is right and true. Please pray for her and myself.

      Yeah we’re called to enjoy sex with our spouse but I do not beleive we’re called to be constantly pregnant

    • @NjorunsDream
      @NjorunsDream Год назад

      @@katBerk In other passages of the Bible we are called to be open to life and be fruitful in marriage. I would encourage looking at videos about natural family planning. The vast majority of Catholic women I know, who don’t use birth control pills or condoms, have pretty regular sex with their husbands, and have NOT been “constantly pregnant.” Most of them don’t have more than 3 children. For one thing, while breastfeeding most women can’t get pregnant for at least 6 months, because of the lactation hormones and the menstrual cycle re-regulating itself. For a second thing, you are only ovulating ONE day out of an on-average 28 day cycle for most women. You are not at high risk for getting pregnant about 99% of your cycle. Ask women who have struggled for years to get pregnant even when they know when their fertile day is- it’s a struggle, because not every copulation during fertile days ends up in pregnancy, because the sperm and egg have to also be in healthy condition, and the slightest thing can throw that off, from diet, to medicine, to a variety of factors. Given how statistically anomalous a pregnancy is compared to non-pregnancy when having unprotected sex, I’m convinced of two things. People who get pregnant when they’re being frivolous with casual sexual, get pregnant as a lesson from God in responsibility and consequences. People who get pregnant who are actively trying to in marriage are blessed by God to procreate, and people who are not blessed with high fertility are being called by God to do one of two things, either detox their body from unhealthy environmental factors so they can bring a baby into a healthier environment, or, they’re being called to adopt a child in need of a home first. I can’t tell you how many women I’ve talked to who struggled for YEARS to get pregnant, only to adopt a child and end up getting pregnant a year or two later without even trying, I think because God wanted them to adopt before blessing them with creating a child. God really is at the wheel in these decisions, that truth may make people uncomfortable but it’s still the truth.

      For some women, like me, who have PCOS, hormonal contraceptives are a life saver because they decrease the chance of getting endometrial or ovarian cancer. There are many great books and websites on improving female hormonal health if you do a bit of googling. God bless.

      Enjoyment is secondary but not unimportant. Think of eating, for instance. We enjoy a lot of foods but if we were starving we would eat something we didn’t like because the primary purpose of eating is for nutrition. With sex, the primary purpose is bonding of the couple as well as procreation. If you believe God created us, I’d guess he decided sex should be enjoyable so that people want to engage in it and hence, bring more children into the world. Of course, the enjoyment aspect would also strengthen the bond of the married couple.

If you're married it is a sin to use contraception and if not you would commit sin by fornication. Both of these scenarios are mortally sinful and may cost you your soul.

    Protestant/evangelical here. How do you feel about vasectomies or sex for married couples that comes after their children have grown up? It’s dangerous to inseminate older women because their wombs are no longer able to bear children, but consistent sex between a couple brings fidelity and unity even at older ages. Most dads get vasectomies for that reason, including mine. How does the Church approach this?

  • @andrewbennett6089
    @andrewbennett6089 4 года назад +2

    Using it out of fear is actually a good point that other commenters and theologians had never said before. It sounds to me like many of the reasons for using CC are based in potential dangers of pregnancy (which seems to go against the below argument that contraception is based in selfishness - could it be a way to ensure that we can still enjoy the unity and closeness that sex brings without putting the other person in danger?) But then one must decide whether, if we are making a choice (sex) that could potentially lead to a life-threatening pregnancy, whether being “open to life” is something like not wearing a seatbelt and expecting God to keep us safe in a car crash. If there was a way to reduce or eliminate the probability of a crash, why would we not take it (contraception) so that we can keep driving, rather than just not driving at all (I.e. not get married)?
    But also we often find that the chance of pregnancy isn’t necessarily reduced by CC?

What you two are teaching is so important for the younger generation. (well obviously for the older gen. too). Thank you.

    13:22 “Natural family planning” is a method of contraception. So why do you say you don’t use contraception? You say that NFP is “totally different” yet it does the exact same thing that you said was the problem with contraception. Please explain. Thank you.

    • @user-rz8vp1bd2y
      @user-rz8vp1bd2y 3 года назад +1

      It doesn't. With other forms of contraception you are putting something in your body whether in your venous system or genital parts to prevent a sperm from fertilizing with an egg. With NFP, you just don't have sex some days, ABSTINENCE. When you have sex using NFP there is no barrier protection or anything you just do not have sex every single day! Hope this helps a little. I would suggest researching natural family planning.

    My parents had 11 children. They used natural family planning and tried to avoid pregnancy with it , my mom was at her wits end. Didn’t love us . NFP doesn’t work. I don’t believe we’re meant to be distracted from God. Having too many kids distracts you. I have 2 and I have an amazing time bringing them Gods love . Imagine I was pregnant constantly due to how fertile I am… my relationship with my husband would suffer because both pregnancies I was placed on pelvic rest. , my relationship with my kids suffer, etc. my vocation is my family and showing my children Gods love . Don’t forget , in the Bible we are instructed to not deny each other our bodies … Jesus wants us to have sex with our spouses to keep us bonded .

      NFP is designed not to work. It will space pregnancies apart a little bit, so you get kids maybe a year and a half apart, instead of nine and a half months apart. If you are trying not to have a kid, period, well, the efficacy for that is very low, which is precisely why it's allowed.

    • @impasse0124
      @impasse0124 3 года назад +2

      So this is a commonly misunderstood thing even amongst well-meaning Catholics. NFP is only meant to be used in circumstances where there is a serious reason to avoid pregnancy, i.e. a major health concern, money struggles, etc. It’s not meant to be used all the time. The issue is not just the method of birth control (artificial vs NFP) but also the mentality. When people use NFP all the time, they’re also guilty of sin (although the culpability is less if they don’t know that it’s a sin) because one of the very first commands God ever gives is to be fruitful and multiply. I think so many Catholics think that because the Church approves NFP that they approve it all the time which is not true.
