Another great conversation. I live in Vietnam and married to a Vietnamese woman. We have a little boy. I am able to earn enough money for her to stay at home (at least for the first couple of years) to look after our boy. We both work hard. When it comes to applying for a visa, it is necessary that my wife demonstrate she is in full time employment. This is deeply unfair and deprecates the work she does as a mother.

@@jeffa847 I think Elias meant that he lives in Vietnam while not being a Vietnamese. This means that he lives there most likely on a spouse visa. It is a common condition across many countries that when a foreign spouse applies for a spouse visa, the native spouse has to earn certain amount of money per year. I think this is what Elias is talking about.

Imagine telling women “don’t get drunk with strange men because it’s risky” and failing to realize that men too do well to abide the same rule. This is common sense. All people should realize the reality of why this rule is good for you.

As a sex coach I hear so many woman that I work with promoting and advocating for polyamory and other social sexual behaviors based on historically male behavior. This talk and Louise Perry’s work is SO refreshing and needed to truly empower woman to thrive sexually. So much of the narrative from sex positive communities these days are actually so unhealthy for woman and pressure them to accept behaviors and expectations that go against their biological, emotional, and spiritual truths. Hook-up culture is just a symptom of an emotionally unhealthy person in need of healing. That goes for men and women.

As a man born in the early 1950s I have to say I completely agree with Louise. If more came round to the ideas she talks about the world would become a far better place, a kinder world, a world with more respect for the individual and a much happier place.

absolutely every metric about our contemporary era is far, far worse and for the most point are at critical crisis stages and percentage-wise people -men and women - are profounfly discontent to where mental illness a sucide are at levels never seen before.
The stats for children raised outside of a NORMAL traditional two parent family are bleak - and that status has never bern at higher rate.
None of these facts of the matter bode well for what will transpire in the hext 30 years as the consequences of allthese horrible metrics realize their impact on western civilization

It is very hard swimming against the tide. I agree. Takes guts and suffering . At least the suffering is understood and intentional . As another said I am also a father of a daughter . I liked girls when I was growing up but my expectation was that I would meet and marry one. I tried but a couple of false starts ( not marriages but girlfriends ) later I eventually met my wife. I have learnt that having imits seems to be liberating.
I'm Christian, but before Louise Perry and Mary Harrington came to the scene, the most lucid commentator about sex I read was Camille Paglia. _Sexual Personae_ is still one of my favorite books, and "No Law in the Arena" from 1994 with its blatantly Pagan attitude toward sexuality was an anchor point for my understanding. I would love to hear Louise read it out loud and comment on it.
People engaged in Abrahamic religions really can't enjoy sex. Paganism is much older and more connected to nature, and has a much healthier view of sexuality.
I dated 6 women in my dating years who were raised in Christian churches. One was a minister's daughter--- like my grandmother was also.
My parents lived by Christian principles and were a good measure to compare. They never took us to church, but did not intefere as I was searching for spiritual meaning.
A lay priest advised me that taking our children to church was not necessary.
Church is not the same relationship that we develop directly with Jesus Christ.

At one service where communion was going to be given, one Ordained Minister and the Pastor asked me to go outside just before the service started. They said I was welcome to come back into the service but was not allowed to take communion from the Ordained Minister. He said I was not one of them.

The writer of Sex & The City is now 60-years-old & said putting career 1st & not marrying & having children was a huge mistake. The young women & men need to hear these stories. However, I did not live a "liberal" lifestyle (parties, promiscuity, etc.). I am far from sad or lonely. I am early retired, and I do not own any cats or pets.
Funny that during the years when "Sex & the City" aired, I never saw it or even knew of it.
Sadness and loneliness are issues within oneself, unrelated to the choice of marriage and children.
Consider also that many people are widowed eventually or on bad terms with their children.
There are no guarantees in life, and at the end of life, every person makes the passage of death alone, even if others are around.

Furthermore most of the married women I know who had kids were working moms. They didn't have to choose. There's a few single ones who are retired and travel, have plenty of friends and hobbies.

I hypothocize: birth control methods/medical interventions for both male (vasectomy) and females (birth control pill now plus other methods) are causing genital/reproductive cancers (prostate/uterine) , impotence, inability to get pregnant, depression and other medical/mental health issues.

Louise is the female Jordan Peterson. Novel ideas to our age that just hit home. Her conception of patriarchy is so accurate. I thought feminists were just delusion when they were speaking about patriarchy but I see her point now. She said on Chris Williamsons podcast “you love your mother..you don’t necessarily respect her though” and it just made so much sense. I think the solution to this is to attribute status to feminine characteristics. Which I think is actually pretty possible because status can be attributed to a lot of different things. This would help men and women both because if you think about it, a lot of the things men and women get made fun of for are feminine things. “You’re soft” is a big insult to a man but is still an insult to a woman too. I was also brought up Catholic & stayed in there for a good while, accessing much of thr great Catholic spiritual resources (esp of the religious Orders) eg Lectio Divina, Ignatian spirituality & Awareness Examen etc etc. Then the new translation of the Mass, reactionary & linguistically poor, was dumped on us from on high & that was the final straw (misogyny had my hand on the exit door knob)! Have been Anglican since I came across a brilliant female parish priest.
Heather is not fully correct. Evangelic traditions tend to think that the only tradition that counts in the literally biblical. They are a minority- all the churches recognise the importance of tradition in the church, alongside scriptural tradition. Most evangelicals get Catholicism totally wrong... I did a Theology degree at a Catholic university (mostly biblical studies) and followed up at an Anglican theological college. There was no difference in how biblical texts were approached, and I learned different things from different lecturers across the two institutions. :)

Something ironic occured decades ago, during the so-called sexual revolution. Back in the 1950's I'd see couples smooching in public, walking hand in hand, hugging openly...it seemed quite natural. Then that demonstrative behavior between the sexes, in public, started to vanish to the point I haven't seen those things in many years. How did this happen, and why? I have yet to see anyone mention this phenomenon.
I’ve always considered sex as sacred. Promiscuity is not in my nature. I’ve been tricked and let down by men who claimed they loved me but did not form any bond with me. They would act like I was the problem for becoming attached. I felt so manipulated.
I’m in America and our culture is so over sexualized. Marriages don’t last and even the ones that do suffer infidelity often. It’s so sad. People have been so influenced by the media to believe it’s okay to be sexually immoral.
I’m a divorced single mother. I can’t trust men intentions anymore. I’ve been lied to way too many times.
My ex husband was caught in a child sex sting. This is the path sexually immoral behavior can lead to. They keep wanting more and different experiences. They become sadistic.

Sex is not sacred at all. If you are christian / religious its a natural drive god gave you that we can spread and multiply and reward us the same time with so much pleasure that we really cannot resist doing it.
In a monogamous relationship (which is not the norm) it is fundamental to have trust and build it on passion, sex. It's an intimate conversation you need to have on a regular basis.
Sex is the most human aspect you can have.

Well I’m a Christian woman and I Iive in a country that’s mostly atheist, where sex work of every kind is legal, and dating is positively demonic. Every single man has felt it is okay to touch my body on the first date without asking - even the Catholic date who said grace before eating! And once we chat about saving intimacy for marriage -they’re out the door or see it as a challenge to try and get through my values. I can’t believe I’ve prayed for discernment, for stamina, for strength in dating and forgot to pray to God to actually send me my kind husband. Careful what you pray for. Ha! ✝️💚💙

I sympathise with you. As a very happy asexual person, I think the whole issue of sex for women is problematic. And always has been. Religion has not been particularly protective of women in this regard either. Some very religious people still believe that married women should submit to their husbands and that marital rape should not be a criminal offence.
Does that kind of approach even work for men? In a society where paid sex work is legal, don’t most requests for casual sex result in requests for payment (if the woman is willing to do it at all) or in rejection (if she isn’t)?

My mother was a part of NOW in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s and she did not want to have to go out into the world to work. She told me she did not want to be a man and have to fight in the office. And the most important thing she could do was raise us children. The next generation. She chose to fight in the PTA for us. And to fight in the church, for women around the world.
She never fought for women. Get real.

I’m a 40 yr old married Christian woman who is also a mother & I’m American.. Louise is right, the points made in the book are pretty obvious but I can understand how the younger generation wouldn’t know these things. There were a few things that I learned & I do appreciate the statistics & specific examples but yeah I agree w/most of her conclusions. It’s kind of like duh men & women are different & duh sex is special & better in long term committed relationships & duh porn is harmful … and duh having social ethical restrictions is actually healthy & helpful. But boy is our current culture trying to pretend these aren’t realities.
Belle, as a Christian studies interviewer has much more room to share her perspective and Louise is quite interesting and has such a rich and powerful emotional intelligence. Totally worth a listen gents!

Nonsense. Feminism has been struggling g against biblical patriarchy from the onset.
When I was in University, a man was accused of sexual assault. He was in our group of ethnic minority students, I did not know him personally. There were some other guys like him who were later accused. Afterwards, we had talks and workshops, we already had them but more than the usual about consent and the like. And one organizer at such an event expressed great frustration "the guys who need this talk are not here, only the guys who would never do this are here." I think that was reality in a nutshell. If a guy is intent on getting what he wants, he is not going to attend your consent workshop.
Not having a stable family structure seem to be a root cause. Good fathers develop boys into good men. Fathers also help girls develop agency and accountability. A little heavy with “expect more from men”. I don’t think there’s a strong case feminism has helped men; quite the opposite. My real fear is it’s actually creating misogyny. Good discussion though. If I’m listening and feel compelled to comment…..you’ve succeeded in thought generation.

Should we stop taking men as a monolith group and accept that “men” exhibit a range of behaviors. So to expect more of men is to ignore that there is a very specific subset of the group that is responsible for the majority of deviant behavior.

@@britneyt9253 I’m 70 and raised in a western country. Prior to the mid 1970’s women were treated socially, politically, legally and financially as second class citizens. It was the feminist movement of professional women, including certain female lawyers and businesswomen, that changed that.
It should be viewed as separate from the sexual revolution of the 1960’s which came about as a result of the Pill and the push by advertising, tv and SOME feminists to ‘try it before you buy it’ .

I think we can see her character arc
The ones who "let them off the hook" first disarm the social/legal policing as they want exposure to danger, and then are surprised at the consequences. These are the views evolved for child rearing, not applicable to running a society.
I think it was Theodore Dalrymple, in his book "Life at the Bottom" (I could be mistaken - but really interesting book) who went on a bit about how well-to-do but morally impoverished people have always flouted prudence and been able to afford to mitigate many of the consequences. Unfortunately those loose morals trickel through society to people who can't afford to deal with the negative consequences of their behaviour.
For example, a wealthy yound bachelor can afford to pay for a child he fathered out of wedlock without marrying the mother, but most men typically don't have the money for that and have no decent options.
So here's a radical idea, dont have sex with people you don't want to raise a child with.

Great interview! Being an American, I sometimes have trouble understanding what these people are actually saying sometimes. I turned on the captions so I could understand all that was said. I saw Louise Perry in another interview recently and she is particularly hard to understand, all her words sound mumbled together under her breath. It's like when she speaks she doesn't articulate each syllable or word, like it's kind of all mumbled together in a word salad! It's not all British speaking people but the accent that Louise Perry has is especially hard to make out. Am I crazy? I have much respect for Louise Perry, she is so thoughtful and precise, and I find her willingness to be accused of extremism for refusing to hold insanely radical views a breath of fresh air. What I don't understand is how she can hold a very traditional view of marriage while still clinging to radical feminist ideas on prostitution and pornography ... those seem rather opposing worlds, and I don't see how she can hold to one (marriage) without undermining support for the other (prostitution and pornography). It will be interesting to see if her views change over time.
I can't help but see how the erosion of support and even respect for marriage in our culture has declined with the mainstreaming of prostitution and porn, both of which are completely normalized and liberated from shame. It seems to me the path back to marriage has to involve re-shaming of anti-marriage activities like prostitution and pornography.
People would choose marriage and not other things if it was genuinely worth it to them. The last thing the world needs is people who don't really want to get married and raise kids, but do it anyway because they were conned by the life script.

Since time began women have taken very seriously raising their children. Most but not all. I have always thought that the sexual side of my marriage should be taken very seriously. I have never taken the view that sex is a light hearted entertainment. In fact I once asked my husband if he viewed having access to his wife’s body was similar to a dog peeing up a lamp post to say this woman is mine. He said a very strong yes. I felt something similar in relation to him and would have cut any woman looking at him as a recreation with horror and cut her down to size very rapidly. It’s an feasible animal reaction I think.

Before the sexual revolution sex was not enchanting, it was duty. People often were not even physically attracted to one each other. It was called wifely duties for a reason.

Marriage and committed sexual unions were a way for early tribes to ensure their survival and also cement bonds inter community and between communities, as well as, if there is polygamy, satisfy the male desire but in an ordered way. It wasn’t necessarily or at all about love. A lot of this no longer the case and marriage has become and romance and mutual & individual fulfilment. The Jewish /Christian marriage eg Mary & Joseph was arranged marriage, a world away from our current model.
The "satisfaction" of male desire is impossible. The only real option for men is self discipline. Even dogs can be trained to control themselves.

I think opposition to pornography is not, and never will be properly a feminist position. The main reason feminists are against pornography is because they wish to have resentful power over men, and most of that power comes through sex.
I’ll back up a little; women have two main powers (though they should be basically one and the same): power through sexuality, and the Godlike power to create life (obviously that is somewhat contingent on men... certainly more so historically). I think Jordan Peterson recently said western women are starting, on average, to have children (or more probably a child) around the age of 38... even I was surprised by that (I’m not actually convinced).
I’ve often pointed out that women want to have 5, 10 perhaps even 15 years of freedom (particularly sexual freedom, though they’d probably have you believe its more about ‘higher’ attainments such as career... I don’t know... I dare say the, what was it? 80%? of Twitter staff that Elon Musk ‘let go’ would probably have had you believe they were ‘high attainment’ and indispensable) but it looks like I may have entirely underestimated the ‘even’ 15 yrs) rather that 20yrs of ‘empowered, emancipated, independence’ is something like the norm... that’s really shocking!
The point is, a large percentage of women have apparently transcended their ‘Godlike’ potential... (obviously I don’t mean Godlike, in any hubristic sense) and put their sexualised ‘you go girl’ on the ontological throne of being; in a state of anomie, men by default look to women for their compass. That’s true even in relatively religious communities, let alone entirely spiritually untethered society.

In the 70s as a child I didn't know anyone who was not nominally Christian. The curriculum in government schools included reading the Bible and learning the basic tenets of Christianity. I don't remember any fire and brimstone. And I don't think it harmed my generations attitude to sex.
Louise is right, historically this pendulum does swing. How far it will swing will I believe depend on how long it takes to swing. That's how pendulums work, the further they swing in one direction, the further they will swing back. Had the pendulum swinged in the 1980s it would not swing as far as it would today but it didn't do this then.
You specifically raise the question of the LGBT+ community. Ultimately I think that will depend on how they and their activists behave. Presently, even the most socially conservative have a will to put them in mental hospitals. But they do want them outside of the mainstream, and kept right away from children and schools. I think how far this might shift depends on how hard this community pushes for access to children, as this is the issue that turns people from merely being sick of them, to finding them discusting and threatening. So it depends on them, and at the moment they are not doing themselves favours.
Outside of religion, more and more people see incentives for a more traditional life. People are recognising advantages of happiness etc. This recognition is in fact the pendulum.

“Fire and brimestone” sermons in Christianity was always rare and is more Calvinist and only common in fundamentalist parts of the US. As a Catholic I have NEVER heard a sermon like this about sex and in fact I don’t know if I even heard a sermon on sexual ethics. It’s more taught that happy marriage brings you joy (married couples have the most sex and are most happy with their sex lives) and the safest and best place statistically to raise children is with and by their biological parents. I think divorcing sex from procreation and the well-being of children is what makes people obsess about only sex and not it’s results.

Even when we were almost universally Christian, almost everyone was Anglican (Church of England) or Roman Catholic. Both are very moderate faiths, preaching forgiveness and love thy neighbour. I think many online post what they believe or have been told happens in churches without having gone to one. I believe in what you say about separating sex from marriage and procreation. I would add that Christian marriages could, historically be quite informal, so many more people are actually married, than is recognised today.
