    Bobby Davro’s Notebook
    Richard has been playing I Spy with a 3 year old, and also reveals the cover of his new book, Would You Rather? His guests are the disrespectful young imps from the Off Menu podcast (after Richard was so well behaved on theirs) Ed Gamble and James Acaster.
    They discuss how many people believed Richard was a competition winner on their podcast - and how the pair have fared with some genuine competition winning guests, Richard’s constructive criticism of Off Menu, how Dan Akroyd turned out to be the Brian Blessed of OM, how brilliant a contestant Richard was on Taskmaster and how Champion of Champions is progressing, plus performing comedy on a cruise ship, what Ed’s new advertising slogan means and who would be the funniest person to lose a partner to.

    0. Great episode, but James Acaster jokes about Rich's thinly-veiled tweets (I didn't verify whether they exist) and Stew googling himself were hilarious.
    1. Stew is a great comedian, and he is still one of the very best, but I don't understand why he's decided that he doesn't like Richard anymore. It's too immature and stupid. He should ask to get on RHLSTP to promote his film (King Rocker). It's completely silly that he's suddenly appearing on every obscure podcast in the world except the one hosted by his old comedy partner.
    2. I was thrilled when Richard won Taskmaster, and I hope he does more TV as a panelist/participant.
    3. The one place where I assume I agree with Stew (re. Richard) is that I think Richard is perhaps spreading himself a bit too thin and hasn't been honing/crafting/polishing/refining his stand-up shows as much as he could. The ideas for Richard's shows are often great, and I think with more work perhaps some of them can be turned into masterpieces.
    --
    On a separate note: when Richard started releasing "Retro RHLSTP", my astonishment kept growing week-by-week when the Prof. Mary Beard episode failed to appear. Finally, it came out a few weeks ago. I hope she makes it back to RHLSTP again soon, and I hope some more non-comedians (e.g., Prof. Andrew George) are also invited.

    Sorry for the long comment and I hope I haven't offended anyone.

      I totally apply myself to stand up shows and put an awful lot of work into them and hone them over the tour as well. If you don't like them by the end of that then it's not due to lack of me trying. I think they're pretty good myself, but 1000s of hours of work go into each one. The internet stuff is nearly all improvised so that's a different matter.

    If you fantasize about James Acaster being your boyfriend, you might want to take a pass on this. If you fantasize about him being your son, though, it's juicy. Stop worrying that he's starving, lonely, or overworked. See that he's on his way to being healthy and happy. We're talking grandchildren inside the decade, ladies. Primo.

    I love it when Rich's guests take the piss out of him for his mean spirited trolling. He always pretends it's not happening, but he squirms, as he should, and backs off for awhile.Then goes back to picking at things his guest feels bad about. Rachel Parris and Sarah Millican are also good at calling him out.

    • @Herring1967
      @Herring1967  3 месяца назад +5

      The piss taking (both ways I hope) is a sign of affection and respect and not mean spirited. The fact I only do it with certain guests is a compliment to them and I am nearly always the main victim of the joke in any case. So I think this is a misread of the comedy in these situations. It is fun, however, to do an interview that isn't a complete suck up to the guest and where failures are discussed as well as successes. I think it works because my career has had many failures. But I do agree, setting up the guests to be rude back to me (Sarah Millican doesn't seem to need any excuse) is one of the highlights of the podcast.

    I've just been rewatching most of series 10, and in fairness, when Richard says "these are beautiful" in regards to Katherine's masks in the last episode, it's not at all in some poor-attempt-at-not-being condescending way. He states it quite simply and matter of factly, it sounds perfectly like he's being genuine. Maybe he wasn't, but it SOUNDS legit lol Also I've realized when looking closely at the last live task, even if Daisy's "biscuit bridge" hadn't collapsed (which prompted her to completely give up and just start tossing shit), she was still breaking the rules in what she was TRYING to do. Her final rendering would've had some of the biscuits rammed up underneath/next to one or both of the coconuts. The task instructed that only the biscuits or mints could touch the spaghetti, and only the spaghetti could touch the coconuts.
    I just still frankly have a real problem with her asking in the studio if her and Richard could be given different point totals for the "speaking backwards" task. To my memory (and I consider myself just as big a TM fan as James), such a thing has NEVER been broached before in any team tasks, it's honestly a really shitty thing to do. Especially on that given task where both of them were equally to blame in their failure. Even if she HAD clearly done better according to the video playback, it's still a shitty thing to do, and sure as damn well meant it, it wasn't simply a joke.
