I watched this movie when I was 8 years old, and I am now 30 years old. I used to love horror movies very much, but despite that, no horror movie ever scared me except this masterpiece. For me as an Arab and Muslim, when I heard the call to prayer at the opening of the film, I got goosebumps because according to Muslims, the call to prayer expels all demons and evils from a person. The culture of exorcism is an inter-religious and real culture. My uncle was an exorcist, and what was happening to Regan in the movie is completely identical to what was happening with the people from whom he was exorcising demons, but not as in the picture in the movie. I mean the frightening appearance and sound and some physical movements such as the movement of turning the head 360. ° But in terms of behavior, the attempt to desecrate the sanctities, and speaking in languages that the person did not previously know, it is completely identical to what happens in the movie. The difference between Muslims and Christians in the process of exorcism is that Muslims exorcise spirits using the Holy Qur’an, and the Qur’an is the word of one God. We believe in Jesus, but we believe that he is the Messenger of God, not God. Holy water for Muslims is water over which the Qur’an has been read. As for Christianity, they expel spirits through the Bible, and the Bible is the word of God. They consider God to be Jesus the Son and at the same time God. Holy water is water taken from the Jordan River. I felt that the director and writer knew that exorcism in Christianity would not work because the Christian concept of God is fundamentally wrong. I apologize for saying that, but this is the reality. That is why the director and writer made the exorcism at the end of the film useless and ended the film by making Demian Karras sacrifice his life. By asking the devil to possess him and then throwing himself out of the window... proof that what I said is correct, which is that Demian Karras was having a problem with faith before he saw the devil possessing Regan, but in the end he lost his faith again and chose to sacrifice himself because the process of exorcism would not It works. Thank-you! I have always wondered what the man was singing about! I have always loved that type of singing, lovely voice/language/Arabic! It is very relaxing and great for meditating!
Louise Mitchell - It’s actually not singing. It’s a traditional way of calling muslims to prayer to the mosque or the time for prayer starts. If you hear on youtube the recitation of the Quran is also not singing. It is just the way the Quran is recited in its true form. In the Islamic narrative, the Quran is literally the words of God in Arabic and the way it was recited is the way God recited to the Angel Jibreel (peace be upon Jibreel) and pass it down to the Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and he just repeated what he heard. It’s not even poetry either, it’s a completely different arabic literature of its own which is unique and inimitable.
It shocks you from the first scene, the cold terror that assails you, the violin that cuts and splatters blood, a distant song, an unknown language that calls to prayer... it takes away all your security. I never get tired of it. Masterpiece

If you have not heard the audiobook that’s read by William Peter Blatty himself, do yourself a favor and download it. His reading of his own novel is incredible.
The Devil or demon in the Exorcist is either Satan or one of his fallen angels i.e Pazuzu. It's implied however that the demon is in-fact Satan/Lucifer and is using one of it's many names. Such a creepy, nightmare inducing film,
Lyrics: Each phrase is traditionally drawn out longer than the last. Allahu Akbar (four times) Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah (twice) Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah (twice) Hayya alassalah (twice) Hayya alal-Falah (twice) Allahu Akbar (twice) La ilaha illallah Note: after consideration, I think, for this video, each phrase is said once or twice. I believe the phrasing is stopped at the 4th phrase.
ReviewCam "Allaahu Akbar" = God is Greater (than whatever you are busy with right now) "Ash'hadu A(nn) Laa Ilaaha Illa'llaah" = I bear witness that there is no god except God [first part of the Islamic creed] "Ash'hadu Anna Muhammadan Rasoolu'llaah" = I bear witness that Mohammed is the Messenger of God [second part of the Islamic creed] "Hayya 'Ala's-Salaah" = (hence) Come towards Prayer [i.e. the canonical daily prayer] "Hayya 'Ala'l-falaah" = (and thus) Come towards Success [i.e. God will give you success] "Allaahu Akbar" = God is the Greatest [repeated as a reminder] "Laa Ilaaha Illa'llaah" = There is no god except God [again as a reminder]
Its basically must to reference islam in a movie about exorcism, because Islam has an old and still on going tradition of Exorcism (Ruqyah), the Kalimat and Takbir are fundamental in it, also the recitation of quran (Ayat ul kursi, al kahf, Nas, Ikhlas etc.) Are widely popular in these cases.
@@nicholaspiela4864so it’s a set up and introduction to father Merrin, and to show the origin of the demon. The scene right before the cut to Georgetown foreshadows the showdown at the end.

Bringing this primeval ancient sub theme in at the start of the movie really made it unique and somehow universally significant and symbolic in equal parts..awesome
Great opening scene and movie. This opening scene seems cozy and creepy at the same time. Somehow it contrasts the rest of the movie. There is a lot of open space, movement, thoughness and evil is tolerable here. In the rest of the movie everything happens in that house, evil is concentrated, undilluted and intolorable for everyone.
I love this opening as much as the closing of the third movie with George C. Scott; the sun rising here and the sun setting with his freedom. just show the whole opening up to where Lancaster Merrin was looking at the statue of the demon.
I advise anyone, for educational purposes to do research on these topics: -Jinns -Rukya (Healing through Quran) -Meanings of the Islamic Call to prayer. It would help you understand the movie on a different level. Much respect and Salam.
I remember seeing an exorcism of a woman wearing a white hood possessed by a jinn here on youtube and it was one of the freakiest things I ever saw. Her skin was almost as white as her robe and her eyes were solid black and her voice was all distorted and deep. It could have easily been faked with today's technology and editing but I swear that was the real deal.

Most beautiful call to prayer!I kept rewinding just hear it over and over it filled me with such emotion were I want to prostrate and pray to Almighty God!Allahu Akbar!Translation(God is Great!)I bear witness there is no God except the one God!I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God.Hurry to the prayer.Hurfy to Salvation...God is Great!!!There is no God except the one God!....)As a child when I saw that movie I had no idea what the call to prayer was saying all I Know is I felt something. Amazing...I was on Google searching for who was the man who did this call to prayer(He has a gift from God) I found I'm not the only one looking for this information...God (Allah) Bless you all🌹,,,
Love how the makers had the call to prayer right at the beginning in a way of blessing and protecting us from this film lol
The intro was basically my famille’s alarm clock when we use to live in Iraq lol. This will always be in my top ten movies of all time.
Thats how to make an OPENING of a terror movie! 👏 Wow
The biggest intro to a horror great movie, the Arabic chants are excellent, a great hit from William Friedkin
One of the greatest and scariest motion pictures of all time, is a landmark in cinema.
The one, the only…
The Exorcist.
the first 20 minutes have always been my favorite
What an unexpected intro. I really appreciate it I'm Muslim
Love lovel this cinematography in the opening of The Exorcist.
opening is epic
So the Lord shall return; and the sound of his voice will be heard throughout all of humanity.
This opening is absolutely genius. A prologue really that incites all that followed with zero explanation.
What does the first part of the movie have to do with the rest? Set in Iraq and random desert then to the rest of the movie
@@nicholaspiela4864 the priest uncovers the devil which eventually possesses Reagan
my favorite scene of the movie; so mysterious and foreshadowing.
My favorite horror films.....The Exorcist, Halloween, The Shining

They just don't make 'em like they used to! *Hereditary,* *Conjuring,* *It Follows,* and *Invisible Man* are solid "modern" horror films, though.
@@ComedyBros5 It follows is amazing and the Conjuring is pretty ok. Hereditary and The Invisible Man(2020) are overrated tripe imo. The Lighthouse and The VVitch are better imo.
@@Noname-ut1ye Oh my goodness...I feel horrible for ignoring those masterpieces. The Lighthouse is the most haunting film I've ever seen!
The opening of this movie is downright artistic. It's so simple and hypnotic. I've heard some critics say it's their favorite part of the movie.
I remember seeing a picture of U.S. troops at that very temple featured in this scene. This movie, in a way, foreshadowed America's now 25+ year war with Iraq.
When I first saw the film this part surprised me I didn't expect it to start in iraq with a prayer over the title
I'm Armenian and i happen too LOVE the Arabic chanting in the beginning. VERY similar too what our Armenian priests do. Except we are christian big difference.
it is islamic prayers.
Great horror movies like Exorcist & Halloween that were made before the 80s were always better because they let your imagination fill in the gaps. These things can happen in reality

@@KryptonKr beautiful explanation
It shocks you from the first scene, the cold terror that assails you, the violin that cuts and splatters blood, a distant song, an unknown language that calls to prayer... it takes away all your security. I never get tired of it. Masterpiece
the prayer is in arabic mate 😃
@@ashkooool_ It's the Muezzin, the call to prayer right? I know it's Arabic, I wrote "unknown language" I meant a language with an ancient and sacred sound, different from the usual... beautiful
It's called Azaan buddy the director wanted to bring Faith in every non religious people through this movie 50 years later this movie still gives you the chills
Best ever opening EVER! so many layers to the plot best horror movie ever father Merin prepping for his ultimate battle all of it awesome 👏🏻
Although William Friedkin almost certainly was involved in the conception of the opening scenes of the film it is not primarily his work that appears on screen. The opening sequence was filmed entirely in Iraq by Owen Roizman under the supervision of second unit director Terence Donnelly. For his work Roizman received an academy award nomination for best cinematography, one of ten garnered by the film.
I love the transition to the title here. It's like the first mini jump scare.

Allah is not God ! Allah is devil !
If you have not heard the audiobook that’s read by William Peter Blatty himself, do yourself a favor and download it. His reading of his own novel is incredible.
Sound design is amazing.
I loved the beginning since it showed my contry of iraq 🇮🇶 were I’m from
I’m so glad I looked at this when there were 686 comments and not the other number.
The Devil or demon in the Exorcist is either Satan or one of his fallen angels i.e Pazuzu. It's implied however that the demon is in-fact Satan/Lucifer and is using one of it's many names. Such a creepy, nightmare inducing film,
Lyrics:
Each phrase is traditionally drawn out longer than the last.
Allahu Akbar (four times)
Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah (twice)
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah (twice)
Hayya alassalah (twice)
Hayya alal-Falah (twice)
Allahu Akbar (twice)
La ilaha illallah
Note: after consideration, I think, for this video, each phrase is said once or twice. I believe the phrasing is stopped at the 4th phrase.
ReviewCam
"Allaahu Akbar" = God is Greater (than whatever you are busy with right now)
"Ash'hadu A(nn) Laa Ilaaha Illa'llaah" = I bear witness that there is no god except God [first part of the Islamic creed]
"Ash'hadu Anna Muhammadan Rasoolu'llaah" = I bear witness that Mohammed is the Messenger of God [second part of the Islamic creed]
"Hayya 'Ala's-Salaah" = (hence) Come towards Prayer [i.e. the canonical daily prayer]
"Hayya 'Ala'l-falaah" = (and thus) Come towards Success [i.e. God will give you success]
"Allaahu Akbar" = God is the Greatest [repeated as a reminder]
"Laa Ilaaha Illa'llaah" = There is no god except God [again as a reminder]
Its basically must to reference islam in a movie about exorcism, because Islam has an old and still on going tradition of Exorcism (Ruqyah), the Kalimat and Takbir are fundamental in it, also the recitation of quran (Ayat ul kursi, al kahf, Nas, Ikhlas etc.) Are widely popular in these cases.
This intro is masterful in building suspense.
What is the connection? Why does it show Iraq in the first part?
@@nicholaspiela4864so it’s a set up and introduction to father Merrin, and to show the origin of the demon. The scene right before the cut to Georgetown foreshadows the showdown at the end.
@@nicholaspiela4864if you can find the documentatary leap of faith by William freidkin. It’s fascinating
en tant qu’Irakien , j’aime vraiment ce film et cette intro
Sounds like the video game of hitman 2 murder at the bazaar
One of the best sunrises I have ever seen!!!
when I fist saw this film I was NOT expecting the Iraq scene , awesome precursor

I am Judeo/Christian and love this beautiful call to prayer.
When I seen this scene when i was young I knew I was watching something very powerful.
Yes it reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This is the best opening ever
Still my favourite film of all time.
film aficionados consider the opening scene to be the most intriguing scene in this movie. it's a very mysterious scene
Ant the music is chilling! I love it!
You should know that a lot of people are extremely frighten about this film after since this film existed in 1973. This is one of the most scariest films everyone has ever saw.
What a nice film about people in the middle east excavating ancient ruins.
Despite being the opening of the film, the Iraq scenes were ironically the final scenes filmed and filmed in post production.
I speechless when adzan start
I love this opening as much as the closing of the third movie with George C. Scott; the sun rising here and the sun setting with his freedom. just show the whole opening up to where Lancaster Merrin was looking at the statue of the demon.
I advise anyone, for educational purposes to do research on these topics:
-Jinns
-Rukya (Healing through Quran)
-Meanings of the Islamic Call to prayer.
