I just found out that in legends, R2-D2 lived all the way to the legacy era. Making him one of the oldest characters that were alive at the time.

Anyways, R2-D2 is surely one of the most long-living characters.
+revan21 thats legends, yoda is technically the oldest in the Star Wars universe, but R2 is the oldest to be in all the Star Wars movies to still be alive and well

After the death of his owner, he was taken away by smugglers to be sold until he ended up on Tantooine, where the Jawa came and made a deal with the crew. They broke him,both mentally and physically,made him suffer, they stole his happiness and innocence in life and filled him with misery. 3 days he was on the Sandcrawler, 3 days of torture and horrid smell. He could not, *will* not continue on.
He switched his gears, and selected the self-destruct button...

I like how this product line follows what you could expect in real life. You have the first iteration that may be groundbreaking in ways, but isn't very practical yet, the balanced and improved second iteration that really takes off, the "pro" model that only sees limited use, then the more affordable model, then the one where they get lazy, then the one where they course-correct and have another success, then one made for the government which ends up being pretty useless actually, then a couple more designed to only to be small iterations to keep the product line alive.

I love how The Mandalorian backs up that the R6 came out after the Battle of Endor by showing us multiple R6’s. Love seeing them in live action, probably my favorite design for astromechs.
Now I wish Disney and Lucasfilm would recanonize the next three models.

Exactly. Some droids are what we'd refer to in software as "user friendly." Some are... much less so.
I remember in one comic, Darth Vader ordered one Imperial Astromech to go into space and then self-destructed.
I thought the R4 and R5 units were the coolest astromech droids ever when I was younger.
I always thought the R4 and the R7 and I still love R4s

In Legends, sales of the R3 were so big that IA didn't have enough R3 specific domes, so to save time and money, they fit the domes of retired/broken/salvaged R2 units and placed them on the R3s, hence Goldie's solid-colored dome.

I love the design of the R7 series droids. Whenever I go to Galaxy's Edge, I'll build me an all black R unit, and then see about getting the head swapped for a R7 model. I'll even see about trying to get the head in a smoky transparent head so you can see lights underneath.
It's R series because they cuss a lot, hence, auto sensors.

R7s are wildly underappreciated! Ion resistance is very useful, but most importantly, they are pretty!
The R1 series was an homage to a Chris Foss book cover for Asimov's Robots at Dawn. Bit of trivia there.

Actually thats a philosophical debate on how AI works. Droids that afe not memory wiped regularly like artoo and or C3PO tend to develop a complex sentience. Its even a debate in the real world as we are nearing singularity.

Astromechs are always cool imo
the droid that Luke said a bad motivator was actually for sensitive and saw Luke was too, so he persuaded Owen to buy him using a mind trick, but then he had a vision of R2 D2 being taken to Darth Vader and then the death star blowing up the rebels and he knew that Luke would need R2 D2 and C3PO so that they can see the transmission from Leia and the rebels would be saved after he had that vision so he sacrificed himself for the fate of the republic.

You should do a video on utility droids like all the different types of protocol droids, astromechs, medical droids, factory droids, etc... love the videos keep up the good work!

R4-P17 didn't always have an R2 series head. She started out with a conical-shaped head. On the planet Gyndine, as she was attempting to repair a trash compactor, it activated, crushing her. Anakin Skywalker found what was left of her and rebuilt her with an R2 series dome.

0:24 funny enough, the P2-Series astromech droid actually got Industrial Automaton sued due to, if i remember correctly, using parts from other companies.

Astromech names are shorter versions of their full serial numbers. So while he is referred to as R6-H5, he is a R2 model, with his full name likely being something like R2-R8B7.

You forgot that R2 units can also be modified to hold cold lomin ale, like Garrik "Face" Loran had his modified to do. Of course he thought I didn't know about it, and was quite surprised when I took his last one.
I've heard some stories about R5s that would make C-3PO short-circuit.

I don't know if you noticed it, but the R6 is canon, you see one, docked in a X-wing on the Rebell base in Epi.7.
He had a red dome, but I can find a picture, and I don't have the movie buyed yet to make a screenshot.

I think Disney is leaning more towards the idea that all the R units are pretty much the same except for some surface differences. The Droid Builder's workshop I think supports that idea. And is anyone else creeped out by the R8's lack of an eye?

Fun fact. The R5 was one of the only type of droids that could use the force. The one in new hope killed itself to help the rebels win the galactic civil war. It's too long of a story to put it in a comment section so I suggest you just check it out for yourself.

There is a not so elaborated on droid model known as the R0 Which was used by Poe damron in the force awakens before he reunited with BB8
I don't think so because when bb was in the workplace getting fixed poe had another bb unit called CB-23. He's always had bb-8 and the only droids that have the tag R0 would be the R0-GR.

This would be interesting to have when you are at the droid factory in galaxy’s edge. Either for entertainment, getting a bit of lore context, and... why not? Building your droid according to these characteristics.

Wasn't there an R-9 model that had a much taller body and was designed for diplomatic assistance as an alternative to Protocol droids and could even speak Galactic Basic too instead of Binary "Droid Speech". ?
Also what about the Dome headed model with the 3 forward facing eyes ? (seen in Imperial Service).
The odd thing about Droid designations is there technically should be Hundreds of R2-D2's and we should see other droids that look identical - as their serial numbers are so short the number of variations just isn't high enough for there to not be duplications - so the use of "Nick Names" makes sense - I can see why Pilots would want to be able to tell their own Droid at a glance via customs paint jobs and cosmetic mods though.
Perhaps another area to add visual distinction would be the hatches on the torso - if these were coloured or edged differently - also they could have more than one colour on the head and chest like a combination of green and yellow for example.
If nothing else it would be quite fun to see some model manufacturer offer a mix-and-match kit series that enables people to design their own to a degree much more so than even the Hasbro ones with swappable parts did.
The problem with Artoo is that you get attached to him and think of him as a Character so when Phantom Menace came along and wiped droids out by the skip load it was a bit disconcerting.

I’d want to own an R3 I think. I just want a friendly supercomputer following me around all the time, chirping along happily. They make frequent appearances in my Star Wars D&D campaigns
The R5 works really well in campaigns when you dint want your party to have a helpful droid
@@fallout0624 LOL yes, the R5s appear in imperial facilities very often as a sort of mellow and standoffish medium between the players and Empire. Usually in stealth missions or such. It’s fun contrasting the party’s happy little R2/3 with some depressed corporate grunt
@@darkninjacorporation using an R5 as the party's main droid is absolutely amazing because you can make them the absolute worst crew mate to have and qt times make them into the most useful
