“Dvořák explained in the preface to his Dumky Trio, that the untranslatable word dumka was of Ukrainian origin and had its roots in melancholy poetry. More specifically, a dumka was a kind of lament that had to be followed by a dance or else its true nature could not be felt. His music shows this understanding to perfection in the alternation of contrasting slow and fast sections, a combination to be found in the folk music of his native Czechoslovakia. In this dumka, the F-sharp minor opening melody suggests a lament, but with the typical Slavic rapid mood change it soon gives way to a cheerful D major melody. The main contrast to the lament “refrain,” however, arrives with the outbreak of the vivace section whose theme Dvořák derived from the Dumka’s opening. “

This performance was wonderful, and Mr Lugansky brilliant. I can't pick whom I prefer between his performance of this or Yunchan Lim's in France in '23. I fancy Lim's raw, youthful exuberant enthusiasm attracts me just a little more at times, while Lugansky's finished maturity gives clearer definition to some passages. Both of these pianists seem to draw terrific performances out of their fellow musicians playing with them. I see exciting times ahead. Thankyou for the download.

Thank God for the musicians. Life without music would be even more difficult. Lugansky is wonderful. 🌷

The 3rd movement reminds me a bit of Schubert's 3rd movement (allegro vivace) in his Fantasia for 4 hands D. 940

On aurait par moments l'envie de de dire : "Dommage que Moscou ne soit pas à Paris..." ! J'ai l'impression que les moscovites sont beaucoup plus gâtés que nous....

Beautifully performed and filmed. One suggestion for all editors: the great thing in live performance as opposed to a recording is the observed interaction of the performers. This gets obliterated by the unnecessary and distracting closeups of fingering and bowing. It would be more rewarding to the viewer to see more of the group as a whole. That said, I am grateful for Lugansky's videos, as he and his colleagues are wonderful performers!

I wholeheartedly agree. The visuals are an unwanted distraction. Music videos that show close ups spoils orchestral and chamberworks and, most of all, operas for me. In all cases all I want to see is the entire scene, be it an opera or group of musicians, with no pans or zooms etc. whatsoever.
