Dvorak, the greatest piano quintet ever; Pressler, the greatest chamber pianist ever.

I have no words for that connection. Can't take my eyes off his hands, magical.

Pressler was fantastic - I will miss him very much, but I would have loved to hear him do the Schumann Quintet op 44 with this group - HOT!

When one considers that Mr. Pressler died in May 2023 at the age of 99, this video is an important monument to his impressive skill and peerless musicality.

As a mere 89 year old this ravishing performance brings me to tears of joy. It is so many years since I played viola in it with my daughter on contrabass. Such opportunities no longer arise. Menahem Pressler is matchless in chamber music. Musicians here are all so well matched in their intentions.

I love how Pressler doesn’t play the notes - instead, it is a concept or color. These colors create his distinctive sound! Pressler understands the art of the half-pedal, and half-key that allows him to get the bell- like tones with gorgeous voicing, never banging and punching as do most. I’m reminded of the flourishes of sound, like gusts of wind as he plays the opening of the Mendelssohn Dm Piano Trio - The notes are NOT evident, although certainly not missing either. When you listen to this performance, note that you’re not aware of hearing.the vast majority of piano notes until a little sprig pops through to sparkle! This is his absolute genius!

Pressler is amazing, a true legend. On the other hand, I have a vinyl copy of Dvorak piano quintet with the Cleveland Quartet and Manny Ax on piano. In the recording Manny Ax plays with absolutely no color at all and the Cleveland quartet’s sound just blows him out of the water. It’s as if he just plays boring accompaniment.

Pressler plays all notes! The ground is absolutely different: he just know and unterstand how to play Not on tastes, but directly on piano strings.

The art of half-pedal has so far slipped away from my thoughts about this music, but now when you mention it, I can perhaps understaning it. About the half-key I have more problems. Difficult problems.

Esemplare esecuzione.

Pressler's technique was a vehicle for shaping his music. Bouncing wrists at 4:06 is just one example of how his technique followed the phrasing of the music. He made playing the piano seem so natural even at this recording of advanced age.

Most pianists playing this piece, especially Movement 2 "Dumka", seem to make one small mistake: they play their part too loudly. Pressler happens to achieve a crystalline, but ever present sound of his instrument that is inconspicuous, but cannot be overheard.
