If Popstar was successful, I guarantee “I’m So Humble” would have got an Oscar nom. I was so stoked thinking Lonely Island we’re gonna get a second Oscar nomination and perform again but sadly... nothing.
Not only are they 3 of the funniest people in comedy, but they're so down to earth. You don't usually see celebrities being genuinely thankful for positive comments about their work.
I don't remember the marketing for this movie. The marketing I got was, "There's a Lonely Island movie coming out." Then I went to watch it in the theater.
this interview nails it. One of the reasons it took me a while, until I was bored one day at home and it was on Netflix, that I watched it was exactly cause, by looking at all the promos, I was certain it was a Justin Beiber parody and I wasn't up for that. Once I did watch it I LOVE IT. I have seen then watch it many more times, downloaded the music and became even a stronger bigger fan of The Lonley Island. It's a shame marketing affected them and they didn't went with their own instincts. It is a good, very funny movie.
I found a cinema that was showing Popstar I was there to support my boys. It's a shame it wasn't the success it should have been. It will find its audience like Hot Rod did
I missed them all so much! Thank you for this, it was so good to see them bouncing off each other again. Popstar is my fave movie and deserved so much better and I'm sad it didn't go the way they wanted :( Great interview I just wish it was at least 5 times longer, we need more Lonely Island, I love them so much!!
I love Popstar movie but i always thought like "why this name, why". Now we know: very unfornutunate marketing mistake that made this movie underrated.Thank you for interview, i think after this so many people can watch this movie without prejiduce.
Nick Bosworth aww man the fact that she isn’t even in the movie had not accrued to me at all. Or the fact most people don’t know she is even in the movie. Naw, none of that ran through my head as I made my comment. Kick rocks
Popstar is (quite possibly) the most solid gut bustin comedy... I laugh so hard, I could rarely recover. God bless the lonely island. Insane comedic troupe.
i saw the film in theaters totally expecting it to be something it wasn't and hyped for it, but ending up loving it for exactly what it is and now i watch it at least once a year.
I feel bad now. I've been a big fan of The Lonely Island for a long time, but when I saw the ads for Popstar, the whole Bieber spoof thing didn't appeal to me and it ended up on my "If I get around to it" list, which I unfortunately never got around to. It's a bummer to find out how good it actually is, too late to properly support the movie. Now I know better, don't trust the marketing. If The Lonely Island puts something out, trust that it'll be as good as I know them to be.
I loved Popstar - knew to ignore the marketing coz I trusted Lonely Island (and knew Apatow would 'get' them). I'm also old enough to remember when - and bear with me on this - Josie & The Pussycats bombed for Universal in 2001 despite being a markedly different (and better) movie than the marketing put out there. For an industry you'd assume would love to make 'the next Spinal Tap', Hollywood sure seems to be getting a rep for badly marketing its music industry satires.
Yeah. Loved this flick. But also loved that these guys were genuine but kind in their thoughts of what went on behind the scenes. I think I’m general, people want to see a level of authenticity. And it doesn’t always have to mean someone being standoffish.
This is one of the few films ive rewatched within a couple of year period, it's hilarious and ive even listened to the songs way more than I should i feel bad so many people are missing out on it
One time, I watched Popstar while tripping on shrooms, and, let me tell you, that film is a masterpiece. 😅 First time I saw it, I loved it, but I was super stoned. When I was tripping, I really paid attention to it and saw just how well crafted it is. It's legitimately a really genius film - one of the best comedies I've ever seen.
I'm so happy I got to see it in a theatre, with a friend who while a fan of Lonely Island, admitted if I didn't pull him, he wouldn't have bothered to see it before Netflix. Really funny movie
I was fooled my the marketing, so missed it until it was on Netflix, but was good I did see it finally. Was hilarious, laughing out loud a lot, great during the pandemic to lift spirits.
This is the only movie I bought on DVD since 2010, to put with Waynes World, Team America, Anchorman, Naked Gun and Dodgeball, as something I can watch any time.
This movie doesn't deserve the hate it gets, It's actually an amazing movie. And as far as comedies go I'd put it on the last as one of the best of the year it came out
I loved the movie... but it did kinda walk this weird line between the styles of This is Spinal Tap and Naked Gun, which are two genres of comedy that usually do not match, or at least do not draw in the same crowd.
On the possibility of Popstar 2 "For me, personally, I think that we probably want to do something new" "So how's the McGruber series coming?" Oh that's a good burn.
What mainly matters is that the film is amazing and it will find its audience. They could have easily have dumbed it down, less crude language etc and maybe the marketing people would have done things differently , it could have made more money but I dont think the movie would have been as good.
Definitely think this movie is underrated, but I don’t think this movie really matches up with like Hot Rod, or Jump Street. I didn’t find it as rewarding on the rewatch.
i watched it too soon. back then i didnt understand what it was trying to do or the format or the comedy. so my impression was like it's such an odd movie.
Anyone that loves Lonely Island will track down everything they do and devour it like an addict. Popstar is the best movie ever.
Woahhhh, best movie ever? I feel that's objectively wrong
@@TheFutureAwaits Yeah I'm kinda exaggerating it's rank. It's up there though.
Hot Rod was undeniably the greater film
@@joeyjojojuniorshabadoo4937 both are great, both are criminally underrated
One word for this movie
UNDERRATED
Haha. The most overused word in youtube. Lol. True it was underrated. That movie was the Spinal Tap of this century.
If Popstar was successful, I guarantee “I’m So Humble” would have got an Oscar nom. I was so stoked thinking Lonely Island we’re gonna get a second Oscar nomination and perform again but sadly... nothing.
Its number 1 at the top of the humble list.
Nah Finest Girl
@@zanechristianson5789 i think finest girl would have been to risky to win anything like that
...second Oscar nomination? They had an Oscar nomination?
Not only are they 3 of the funniest people in comedy, but they're so down to earth. You don't usually see celebrities being genuinely thankful for positive comments about their work.
Everyone also forgets that it came out at the same time as Captain America Civil War.
That was just poor planning
Damn. Goal, set...match.
I don't remember the marketing for this movie. The marketing I got was, "There's a Lonely Island movie coming out." Then I went to watch it in the theater.
Same

Genuinely a very clever movie. They packed in so many jokes
Emma Stone is so underrated in that movie. Her song Turn Up The Beef is just as good as half the stuff on the radio right now.
Yeah her 3 seconds of screen time is widely untalked about
Nick Bosworth aww man the fact that she isn’t even in the movie had not accrued to me at all. Or the fact most people don’t know she is even in the movie. Naw, none of that ran through my head as I made my comment. Kick rocks
Claudia Cantrell, the one and only...
great interviewer, got this real talk about the movie on tape. well done.
Fantastic movie, if it was on Netflix it would gain recognition then
It is on Netflix if I'm not mistaken, just not available in every country
OneTribe oh, maybe just not in the u.s
i’m in the us and our netflix is ass lmao
It has been on Netflix before
THEY’RE PERFECT THANK YOU FOR THIS INTERVIEW I MISSED THEM SO MUCH!!!
Popstar is (quite possibly) the most solid gut bustin comedy... I laugh so hard, I could rarely recover. God bless the lonely island. Insane comedic troupe.
The way Jorma kept staring off into the distance 🥺
OH MY GOODNESS, I love how honest this whole conversation is. I want so much more of this.
I have a very strange obsession wIth these three men.
I don't even notice anymore how weird it is to just listen to them 24/7
Heart is screaming....Miss these guys and their talented stuff. Is this the entire interview...I don't think so...please post more!
i saw the film in theaters totally expecting it to be something it wasn't and hyped for it, but ending up loving it for exactly what it is and now i watch it at least once a year.
This movie is so good. It's too bad so few people saw it.
The Bieber marketing really either draws people in or repels them, but once people see the movie, it's just so unexpectedly great.
I've never seen this movie, because of the marketing. After hearing this, I should check it out.
Its crazy that these guys are in their 40s. They all still look so young
Literally the funniest movie of all time
Thats me on a zoom call
...is not this movie.
You obviously haven't seen many movies then, lol.
Literally
Very insightful and entertaining, thank you.
I’m happy to see all the other people that actually love and appreciate this movie
Great interviewer. What insight, empathy and tact.

Jesus how was this only just released in 2016 seems like it was nearly 10 years old

Yeah Ive always ignored marketing for movies with actors or performers I enjoy a lot, because they almost always seem to get it wrong
I love this movie and listen to the soundtrack a ton!
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
Yeah. Loved this flick. But also loved that these guys were genuine but kind in their thoughts of what went on behind the scenes. I think I’m general, people want to see a level of authenticity. And it doesn’t always have to mean someone being standoffish.
Had to drag my friend to this movie because he had no interest in seeing it. He loved it and said "that was not what I was expecting."
I always wondered about the marketing! Really interesting to hear home it went down.
This movie is amazing.
This is one of the few films ive rewatched within a couple of year period, it's hilarious and ive even listened to the songs way more than I should i feel bad so many people are missing out on it
Give us a Hot Rod 2!!!!
Where would you even go with that?
One time, I watched Popstar while tripping on shrooms, and, let me tell you, that film is a masterpiece. 😅 First time I saw it, I loved it, but I was super stoned. When I was tripping, I really paid attention to it and saw just how well crafted it is. It's legitimately a really genius film - one of the best comedies I've ever seen.

I love the guys and I love the movie. It's funny, touching and emotional. It's sad that the movie is so underrated.
Didn’t love it as much as Hot Rod but it’s still wonderful
I listen to the soundtrack at least once a year - so good!
One of my favorite comedic movies ever
I saw it in the theater twice! It’s hilarious and holds up.
I remember it was packed when I saw Popstar in the theatre.
That Bieber Marketing really backfired. I would almost have missed this brilliant flick because of it.
The funny thing is Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is on HBO Max now!
I was fooled my the marketing, so missed it until it was on Netflix, but was good I did see it finally. Was hilarious, laughing out loud a lot, great during the pandemic to lift spirits.
I might go and rewatch this movie now that this has reminded me how funny it was
This is the only movie I bought on DVD since 2010, to put with Waynes World, Team America, Anchorman, Naked Gun and Dodgeball, as something I can watch any time.
Popstar is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. If anyone from The Lonely Island is reading this ... Thank You.
I saw it in theatres with a friend, was well worth it.
Bash Brothers is the best thing they've ever done.
Popstar is still one of my favourite comedy film..I totally loved it❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ ,disappointed that it didn’t get the love that deserved 😔😔😔
This movie doesn't deserve the hate it gets, It's actually an amazing movie. And as far as comedies go I'd put it on the last as one of the best of the year it came out
great stuff mate thanks
Fantastic interview question. Been wondering this for years.
i was just talking to my girl about this movie last week and she asked me if it was “the justin bieber thing?” noooo lmao
A lesson in how & why the machine can/will hijack a vision. It was a hilarious movie.
I loved the movie... but it did kinda walk this weird line between the styles of This is Spinal Tap and Naked Gun, which are two genres of comedy that usually do not match, or at least do not draw in the same crowd.
I was always amazed at what a sweet movie set turned out to be. It was situational comedy and the celebrity situation sucks.
I don't think I even saw it get a theatrical release in Australia.
I didn't see the film because of the Bieber focus. Now I'll have to see it
It took me a few seconds to realize he meant "script for the sequel" and not "SQL script" 2:30
Love that movie, always hated the name though.... now I know why!
Does anyone else remember their pilot for Awesometown?
They should try that again, it would for sure get picked up today.
I went to see this movie the weekend it came out because I was dying to see it. Then I bought it
Not only was the movie fantastic but the soundtrack was incredible.
I was so annoyed it didn’t get released in Australian cinemas!
It’s so crazy that I saw this movie a week ago I forgot all about it
One of my favourite movies
It's incredible
PSNSNS was great comedy and a perfect mocumentary.
cool acronym
I loved this
So, Uhhh, Don't forget Palm Springs. Great Movie!
Popstar!!! Masterpiece
On the possibility of Popstar 2
"For me, personally, I think that we probably want to do something new"
"So how's the McGruber series coming?"
Oh that's a good burn.
Conor for real the whole time ....was an amazing title
It's definitely gonna be a cult classic similar to office space or Scott pilgrim
it’s so hard to convince someone to watch scott pilgrim
I LOVE this movies music
I would’ve loved the original title UGH
I never saw this... specifically as I thought it was some sort of Justin Bieber parody as mentioned in the video... I guess I'll go check it out.
What mainly matters is that the film is amazing and it will find its audience. They could have easily have dumbed it down, less crude language etc and maybe the marketing people would have done things differently , it could have made more money but I dont think the movie would have been as good.

@@syvall Sweet, thanks!

I really did think it was a Bieber parody. Not why I haven’t watched it but I did think that.
they could have talked just about Tim Meadows as the unsung hero of the film.
Popstar and Walk Hard are perfect biopic Satire and Pastiche.
Hot Rod 2 please !!!
I love Popstar!
Omg the lonely island are heroes 🏝
🥺🥺🥺
I thought the movie was great! Loved it
Marketing fuckedd uppp
i saw it in theaters and was honestly disappointed
I love this just yes hahahah
Pop star one of the best comedies of the century?... what?... no... not even close... and i love the lonely island
