I don't know how I feel about the CLA series, it feels like Mercedes-Benz moving downmarket. It looks better than the FWD BMW 2-Series but that's a pretty low bar.
Mercedes-Benz has had the A class in Europe and Asia since 1998, so I'd say that's when they went downmarket. However, there was a W201 compact concept in the late 80s/early 90s as a first attempt. It didn't go well.

Fun fact There was a C32 AMG w203 (pre-facelift) that hat a Forced induction 3.2 V6 and from what i have seen they are super reliable

I do believe that the older CLK hard more volume in the backseat?? The big boat CL might also have larger backseat room?
