i thinks that putting them sideways works since it helps eliminate some weight, and since they only go up, they’ll make the aircraft go into a straight line position anyways
This is less of a challenge and more of a showcase of how finely tuned the aerodynamics of Trailmakers are. The fact that a 2 gimbal sound barrier busting vehicle is even possible absolutely blows my mind.
the way the bass shaker on the back of my lazy boy makes me feel like I'm in that rocket when it hits the speed of sound, i just can't get enough of it
@@rexrckr3600 He never tried it with aerodynamic pieces in front of the gokart seat, and it actually is much better with the gokart seat that way. In fact so much better you can break the sound barrier with only one gimbal glitch-less and mod-less, provided you also lay the gimbals flat parallel to the ground rather than vertical.
I like this idea, but unfortunately heli engines don't deal with high loading very well, the heavier you make the spinny thing the slower it spins. :/ Would still love to see the attempt, but I don't think it would be successful.
19:00 you litterally broke the sound barrier within a MUSCLE LEAGUE. If you manage to breke the sound barrier without the energy cores you will be a legend
I think I have an interesting idea for Multiplayer Monday: having an arena with land and water, trees, rocks, you name it. Everyone creates an amphibious vehicle that can or cannot transform, and all vehicles have a bomb spawner on them. The winner of each round has to increase engine and/or thruster speed (the creation might have both or just one), therefore making it harder for them, and the first person to reach a designated level on engine or thruster wins (I don't know what the beginning speed should be). also great video!
Without watching past the first bit about guessing the number of thrusters, I guess 36. Aerodynamic drag is proportional to the square of the velocity, so 6 times the speed would mean 6^2 times the drag. This is going to be an over-estimate though, because the net thrust with one gimbal jet is actually less than the thrust of one, since the weight of the cockpit is taking away from it.
Whoa, I'm loving the aerodynamic science going on here. I've been building planes in Trailmakers for a long while now and I did not expect putting anything on the back of the cockpit to have any effect whatsoever. Nor did I expect the aero on the sticky-outy bit of the airplane cockpit to be worse than a 1x4 wedge. That's super useful info, cause I bet you could perfect-aero a go-kart seat for less weight than the airplane cockpit itself.
I love to see things flying in mid-air. While I'm more a sailsman, I know my physics. If you put the cockpit upside down, glas on the bottom. Then 2 gimbal jets on the cockpit and some wedges to make it all streamlined. This is more balanced and still a small footprint for resistance.. Just like a boat, balance everything out, only this time it's upside down! ⛵️
as far as im concerned that leaves 2 more sound of speed challenges: can you throw something at the speed of sound, can you reach speed of sound by freefaling
I guessed 6. The 28 at the start convinced me of your 15, and then I was so proud seeing 6 work and 4 fail. Then you went and managed it with three and I am now impressed
I'd guess 6. Maybe 6-8, 8 being the MOST I think it could take. With perfect aerodynamics I'd be amazed if it took less than 5. 200~ kmph each, with perfect aerodynamics to reduce diminishing returns, means I think 224 * 6 = 1,344 kmph give or take for diminishing returns. After watching: WOW! It took 3?! I'm blown away. Aerodynamics counts for so, so, so much more in this game than I thought.
If you're going for extremely fast things you should *always* use the lightest seat you can, having a go kart seat with 4x1 wedges in front of it is not only lighter than a cockpit seat but is also more aerodynamic as the 4x1 wedge is the most aerodynamic block in the game. Also, if you see no aerodynamic arrows it means that block doesn't generate drag, that actually goes for 99% of the aesthetic blocks (only exception is the sound block) Also, you could've just turned the gimbal jets vertically so you dont need the connector blocks while also being able to place 4x1 wedge blocks on the top.
I initialled guessed 6(my reasoning being that yes there might be some diminishing return, but not enough to outweigh the fact that each additional gimblejet, have to carry a smaller and smaller % of the seat), and got really discouraged when he needed 28 initially... did NOT expect aerodynamics to have THAT big of an impact, that I ended up having overestimating in the end...
Tried to make a 2 gimbal jet version and got to 1175! So close yet so farXD! It is on the workshop if anyone wants to see it and/or try and make it better.
I reached 1131 kph with 2 gimbals on my first try Then I broke the sound barrier with 3 gimbals all set to .82 power It seems you need at least the power of 2.46 gimbals(though possibly as low as 2.4, due to added weight of the extra gimbal jet and varying craft design)
I genuinely guessed 2 because one time I was using gimbals to make a plane go forward cause funny, but at the start I was trying to see the max speed I could get and with 2 and lots of optimization I got to 1100 kph, it was a waste of time for me tho. Also, I remade your design for 2 gimbals and I got to 1138 kph so far.
My guess was 15 when I saw the first gimbal (Did not expect scrapman's guess to be also 15 lol) kinda mind blown how just aerodynamics cut down like more than 90% of gimbals
possible optimizations: rotate gimbals to eliminate 1x2 connectors use operator seat, attach gimbals to bottom so there's no extra side aero to deal with
Attaching gimbals to bottom would make it very unstable, unable to go straight kinda like over steering, vechicle would flip upside down, so weight is back at its place. What I always do building a drone is putting them as high(and wide) as possible, so they auto stabilize the drone without any logic
The point is to flip upside down so seat is under the gimbals when flying Doing the above fits vehicle into a 2x2 horizontal footprint so you only need the 4 wedges
hey for the 2 gimbal design id imagine you could rotate the gimbals to have the attachments facing upwards, get rid of all the aerodynamics other than infront of the gimbal and the seat, and replace the seat with a go kart seat, and i think that would be faster (also dont forget the rudder)
@18:30 spin and wobble are proof of imbalance. The wind resistance alone on the cockpit cover is enough to create wobble, and you aren't balancing the craft on all 4 sides.
With the gimbal checks because they automatically write you up words you could build a thing as long as you want and then when you turn them on they bring you straight up
I originally predicted 8, and was severely disappointed when it went up to 28 without aerodynamic adjustments.... I am happily surprised that I guessed wrong.
@14:10 Your cockpit is slightly heavier on one side, which creates a slight wobble... if you can somehow balance it on all 4 sides, i think it would improve performance.
My guess was 10, never expected three after the initial flight. After finishing the video, I can almost guarantee two is "possible", but it might take some significant time and effort to achieve.
