It's nice to see a tutorial that shows what can be achieved with things you most likely already own (or can purchase readily at low cost), instead of operating under the assumption that you have an expensive DSLR camera with a high-end macro lens laying around, and an entire area set up with perfect lighting.
Thanks for making this video - I had asked my husband to make one of these stands for me, but I wasn't 100% sure I had the items rubber piece size correct, so told him to wait - I'm glad to see I didn't steer him wrong and he can get to work on making it!
Just discovered your site. Thank you sooo much. I have been using a spreadsheet I created and an elaborate setup to photograph my collection for years now. What a difference the tools on your site make!! In the process of moving my Excel info to your program. Thanks again.
Excellent - I have used the book setup and three difused LED lamps - and gotten some good pics. I thought that system was simple to use! Your system eliminates the power cords etc., and is a lot smaller.
Great info for photos.. absolutely love the mintstate idea. This is the future of coin grading without a doubt and adding the coin listing for collectors set's it above all others.
Luster is reflective. The black tube will effect the luster along with the light wavelength. If you can change to lamp color do it. Luster and toning works best with amber/red light.
Anything you do will do that as well, and why this is just to get clear enough images to translate for online purposes or to upload to mintstate.com. Thanks for your input!
@@CoinHELPu I learned a lot doing product shots of auto parts in the early 2000’s. It took a year to perfect the process. It’s amazing how well bouncing light off a paper works with macro shots. Indirect light is great for product shots.
Sorry but this is actually wrong , 4" is actually the WRONG size. The 4" version on the coupler on Amazon is actually 4 1/8" - 5" which is too big for the ring light clamp to fit. The ring light clamp is a little less than 4", so you will want to order the 3" coupler which has the size of 3"- 4" which will fit the ringlight clamp snuggily. This is not your fault, it's just the item dimensions in the listing which is confusing.
Some resourceful ingenuity led to this much appreciated invention. My light arrives tomorrow morn. This will forever be known as "The Studio"! Excellent thinking
I was using a similar lamp but much larger of 8 inches diameter, with the movement above the coin in the larger lamp you can photograph all the luster of the coin. But I am also getting these equipments that you suggest to take other pictures with out Luster, for a clearer shot. Thanks
I can't fit the light ring in the rubber piece - it's too big. I ordered the parts from amazon that you link to. I'll give it another try or else do the super glue. Can't wait to try it, I'm sure it will work well!
I have been searching and searching for a solution to how I can photograph my coins, and I believe you just nailed it. I can get the rubber tubing at Home Depot and a selfie light ring at Best Buy. Thanks for an awesome idea! I was ready to go out and spend hundreds on a new camera with a macro lens! You saved me from spending a fortune, thanks! I can't wait to go out tomorrow morning and buy this combo!
Thank you MintState.com and CoinHelpU. Much needed website and apps. 🤞That MintState.com also makes an Android app with the A.I. ! That would be incredible! All of you get 👍👍👍👍👍 !
I have the USB microscope in your thumbnail. It's ok, but I find that it doesn't do well with its built-in lighting. Do you have any luck with it? If you have a good microscope recommendation or tips and tricks, a video on that would be awesome. Keep up the good work! You guys rule!
I bought your round black 3" thing and I could not fit the selfie ring light around it. Tried for a while. Any other suggestions to use this Selfie Ring light to keep it steady?
Okay, my superglue has dried. Works absolutely fabulous for raw coins. However, for slabed coins, I get a nasty halo reflection, no matter how bright I have it. But I've only tried it on one older NGC silver dollar. Tomorrow I will try other slabs.
The light in the link has 3 color options. Which color were you using in the video? Also, do you use one color for silver colored coins and another for copper or just set it and forget it? Thanks.
Really it is a matter of trying and finding what you like. That ring had a few colors and a fade mode. Your phone also has light modes and settings. I would recommend you experiment to find what you like.
Is there a place to send coin photos of possible mint damaged or damaged 1 cent Lincoln and Roosevelt dime ; where someone more aware than I can determine what it is I have discovered ?
When you turned your Morgan dollar from obverse to reverse at 3:59, I noticed that you did momentarily hold your coin by your thumb and index finger. Unless you had washed your hands like a medical doctor before this process to alleviate any oils from these two fingerprint areas, you could have permanently marked what appears to be a mint state coin. Any comment?
For larger coins, I find the zoom on the microscopes to be too powerful for a good photo of the full coin. (Other microscopes might adjust better.) Roughly 50% of our users are mobile based, so the microscope is not their preferred option.
@@mintstatecointechnologies4057 Agreed. For large coins I had to get a very tall Leuchtturm (yes, correct spelling) stand. It's the only one I found to take Mogans, and Eagles with that USB Scope. I was just wondering if you felt you were getting better results with the phone setup
@@mbrown5494 I like the light control with the phone setup, but as far as the capture of detail (important for AI training) they have similar results. If you like the microscope photos you get, no need to change really. If you are on the move when the need arises and don't want to use a laptop w/ tall "leuchtturm", it's a good option.
Have to be honest, my setup is exactly what is pictured here and I’m getting nowhere near the type of photos your showing and I have iPhone 14, can anyone please help. Need to sell so many coins and all my pictures suck
The guy in the video is asking for help to photograph coins with 'original mint luster'. I was hoping this setup would do that, but nope. I'm back to testing other ways using a newer iPhone 13.
Coupler or light too big? Mine was a little tight, but I loosened the clamps and worked it in. Other sizes/brands of tubes can be found at your local hardware store.
@@mintstatecointechnologies4057 Not sure, I bought what was in your links. Figured they would work, no amount of persuasion will get that in there. I’ll have to super glue.
@@DougSimpsonDDS I'm so confused at your confusion Doug... You said "way too big". Mint State replies (is the) "coupler or light too big?"... you reply with "not sure"...
