    It’s so hard to not be too negative with a negative boss.

      The worst part is
      wasting years of your life dealing with them, it effects other areas in your personal life, I don't think bosses realize it or that they care

    • @illtek25
      @illtek25 4 года назад +6

      So true. Watching this video because I "stood up" to my micromanaging leader and made my situation worse. What makes it worse is I'm working half time b/c of this virus.

    • @stevebean1234
      @stevebean1234 4 года назад +5

      @@illtek25 im kind of in a similar boat. i expressed frustration to my boss after repeated failings (unfortunately, undocumented) and he reported me to HR for something I didnt say (luckily, a third party in the room gave me a written statement confirming). I was removed from the program without any notice. the funny thing is that i am very confident I'm right and in two years they'll notice theyve wasted a bunch of time and money and will likely lose the larger 10yr strategic initiative.
      i made mistakes though, i dont know how to "stand up" for myself. i should have just gone to HR without even trying to talk to the boss. ive been bullied my whole life - my parents threatened to kill me growing up. in college, a roommate tweaked on drugs and attacked me before finals week, I told my school and they refused to change my room and they threatened to expel me... there are a few things that happen with these experiences. one, i dont trust authority - in many cases, an organization will try to downplay your emotions or gaslight you to make you think like your problems dont exist or arent valid. Alternatively, they will try to intimidate you to keep you quiet, which can come in a bunch of different forms - social ostracization, passive aggressive remarks, not including you in important discussions, removing your funding, micromanaging, etc. If the organization is truly tweaked, they will lay you off, fire you, or set unrealistic goals you "have" to meet to stay employed.
      Second, I have a scapegoat mentality - I had been defeated in so many instances (I couldnt get away from my abusive family) that I subconsciously assume its ok to be treated that way and eventually i find myself in situations where im bullied again. When is it appropriate to stand up for yourself? Psychologically, almost always - if you let people get away with things it'll often just get worse. In terms of a corporate environment, almost never. "If you wrestle with a pig you'll both get muddy".
      Anyway, I'm in a bad spot, too. I'm in a niche career and my likely options are 1) ignore my ethical/bullying concerns and hate life 2) push the issue and be ostracized for disrupting "good order and discipline" or 3) walk away from the program/company and face career suicide. There's a small chance appealing to senior management will help, but it may also get me fired.

      Hang out as long as you can and move on. If you' have less than five years of experience, try to stick it out for a year or two. If you have more than five years of experience, bounce asap. There are a lot of good companies and fantastic bosses out there. Don't kill your career by working for a bad one.

    Really trying to employ these strategies at work right now. I personally feel, or my ego at least feels, that I’ve been going above and beyond my job duties and responsibilities. Examples include working extra hours, being a proactive team member, arriving early, staying late, supporting my team etc. All of this extra effort is either not recognized, unappreciated, or somehow I get admonished by my boss for doing too much? Should I instead slack off, adopt a lukewarm work ethic, and merely meet the minimum standard in order to find success? Sometimes it seems that accolades are given at my job for doing just this, meeting the bare minimum. I recently was given corrective training for having not contacting law enforcement or CIT when dealing with a violent and aggressive youth. Mind you I was at the youths home with his family, but otherwise by myself without support. I was threatened by the kid with a large blunt object, and in short was able to resolve the situation on my own. I wrote my report and sent it up the chain of command, but got in trouble because I didn’t immediately inform the entire world what was going on? By the way I took complete responsibility for not calling for backup in the moment and told my boss I’d do better in the future. I am however extremely frustrated. I guess that’s what I get for giving an effort.

    • @esk8er900
      @esk8er900 3 года назад

      I’ve been forced to use a very similar method although a malignant narcissist doesn’t accept or even understand the concept of taking blame, instead when his instructions inevitably failed, I’d say “i had a feeling this would happen but you insisted so I did exactly what you said, maybe next time…” and of course rinse & repeat. Gladly I left for much greener pastures but keep tabs cuz I’m nosy and ugh it’s a really sad state of affairs which is actually upsetting after how hard I worked to keep a tight ship.

      John Failphins yep military is way way different than corporate even civilian government. Way different culture. The solution to this question is find a new job ASAP but try to keep good references and a good bridge. No real way to tell a boss to toss sand unless you’re in the rare position to quit on the spot. Financial independence is one way to be in that position.

    This is a good strategy overall I like it, it shows strength of character and an understanding of the overall goal. The issue is that not getting noticed for your hard work time and time again erodes motivation and morale for you and your team. If the hard work goes unnoticed for days and weeks and months and maybe even years, people are going to look to work elsewhere to get the proper recognition. People who do strong work deserve the proper recognition for their efforts and results, that is how systems and processes get stronger, more adaptable and more enduring.

    Ive got a boss thats coming back to my place of employment, that im not a fan of, neither of my co workers are either. But the one thing that does help with managing a bad boss, is picking and choosing your battles. You only go above your manager to HR if its the last thing you do ( sometimes that is the best option). Another thing is stand your ground, and pick your battles.

    It's difficult to get through a situation without feedback, support, or approval, but it can also lead to an opportunity where you keep your own methods & motives to yourself.
    If the boss wants to know how the thing got taken care of, you get to show off.
    Think of it as a Savings Deposit: taxed or not, you can withdraw from your account of the situation & either keep applying the same methods, or share the methods with those you trust.

    I had a boss that lied and blamed everything on our payroll team. When she wanted one of us gone, she would “lay us off” and replace us the next day. She was nasty and dirty. Eventually we all left or got let go. Nobody lasts over 2 years if that. It makes her look good and the company owners and her management have no idea what she does. Our supervisor didn’t stand up for us either. I’ve never worked for someone so evil and dirty. Oh and she’s been there for over 20 years and still there making over 6 digits a year. If we complain, we are disgruntled. Hopefully it will eventually come full circle one day.

    If you do not advertise yourself even a little bit, you will be left in the dark and you can grin all you want avout how much you did things. But no one knows.

A martial artist has a strict dialogue with an Olympiad. “Nicho zai in empty hands” is a strict dialogue that can be had with a baton or mace twirler. An excuse-maker has a strict dialogue with an excuse-giver. An excuser has strict dialogue with a guru. A guru has a strict dialogue with a flower. Something about a Lotus and musical notation. bad bosses get their just desserts in the end. If they don't, than the organization itself is bad and before long, from your boss up to the top, everyone will get it because the ship is sinking at that point.
    i had to leave a job once because of a bad boss. He wasn't about to fire me, but he was pigeon holding my career, setting me up for failure. Giving me negative feedback ratings without a legit explanation, and preventing me from transferring to something else. So I quit, on my exit interview I fired a few f*** you rounds his way but in a manner where I didn't lie or exaggerate. Apparently I wasn't alone in my sentiment because within 6 months my old boss got fired.

    The dislikes are from the bosses that didn't take EXTREME OWNERSHIP due to their ill intended egos that narrates their truths in order to shine a light on their accomplishments and pave the road with the blame/faults of others.
    I can see clearly through the BS.
    Even when the unbalanced EGO is knotted, twisted, and tied in a never ending cycle of BS,
    I can see still step over, under & or through it with a balanced EGO that the boss has no intention of developing the necessary discipline it takes to have extreme ownership of yourself, your employees and the residents that are under their care. Once you have that thinking, one tends (or they should) break their selves down and starts to take extreme ownership, it will take u through massive changes that will make one uncomfortable when one has been pushing down the emotions of denial, anger, hurt, jealously, trauma & so much more.

    It’s not so clear cut often times, the reality of it is that more so than not, there are other variables that come with a negative boss and are usually the ones that break the team. For one, the “let’s win no matter what” mantra is usually not there as in, the very people charged with carrying out the mission no longer care enough to make it happen, and willingly let the job crash and burn, the co-workers generally don’t like each other so that enhances the already poor leadership and to cap it off by the time a shitty boss is outed, the team doesn’t want to or have the will to rebuild and regroup, thus letting everything turn to a pile of shit with disgruntled people grinning like idiots and walking away. I’ve seen it on both the military and civilian side, I’ve seen subordinates become so disgruntled that they risked their positions to purposely ruin their bosses careers (and it worked) but it should have never got to that point. On another occasion a project superintendent was eventually bullied and threatened with physical harm by an irate employee which resulted in a transfer of that leader and termination of that employee (that boss was an asshole BTW) and it did kill 2 rotten birds with one stone. Bottom line, none of that should have happened, and I rest the blame squarely on the leader for not having the thoughtfulness, organization, foresight and emotional intelligence to deal with subordinates and also lacking in knowledge of the job they are supposed to be running. I feel the number one killer of leadership is the person charged with that duty, don’t know or understand the job they are leading in. This is a train wreck waiting to happen when trying to lead longtime experienced personnel. In the leadership schools I’ve attended in the military, there are significant gaps in how to approach situations though I understand the novelty of certain scenarios I feel that the “shut up and keep leading” method does not work if everyone in your unit, group or whatever vehemently hates your guts. Unfortunately the only remedy for it is removal and replacement due to lack of confidence. For my own safety I would not want to go into battle with teams like that. I remember the stories my grandfather used to tell about know it all big mouthed “useless LT’s” in WW2 and Vietnam that mysteriously disappeared and people in platoons just generally not looking out for one another in the field because they couldn’t stand each other.

    Jocko, I really hate my boss, he gave me a weird list. This list is filled with certain people that our side has to shove into a train outta town. Now I don't know these people they seem perfectly normal to me.
    There are 14 people with the last name Willink on the list.
    Should I take your advice and win?

    Wouldn't it be bad to win too much with bad leadership? Fool him into thinking he's a good leader.
