Volcanoes are a lot like the weather, you can have a lot of indications that it might rain but the most certain is when you step outside and get wet. Mud slides are scarier than eruptions as it is hard to tell when or if they may occur and can be just as devastating when they occur in the wrong place.
One thing you have to remember is that every volcano eruption going on now is the most heavily studied eruption in progress. The scientists are learning more just like we are. Everyone forgets that just like archeology, volcanology is a new science.
