Brendan, I may have had the biggest breakthrough in the last three years or so thanks to Bobby's recommendation to you around keeping your back to the target and pulling down (aka 2 o'clock drill). Years ago I received the same feedback that my downswing sequence was off and my chest was opening too soon but it never really resonated how to fix it. After spending 15 min working on this drill, balls were hissing off my club face... Nothing fat, nothing thin with a lower trajectory. And let me just say it felt very weird which is probably a good sign. I've never felt impact like this with significant shaft lean and lag (sorry Monte). Three range sessions later the feeling is still there. Wow, is all I can say. Kudos to Bobby and you for sharing. Also, just thought I add that I picked up a Direct Force putter and love it. So solid.
Hey Brendon, I've been working now like three weeks on this Bobby Lopez 2'o Clock Drill and also the Flamingo. And it really works out nice on my Irons and especially the Woods and Driver. I was struggeling a lot with slicing the big Stick and it seems to me that i found a Cure with These Drills. I think they really help to avoid coming across and to early into the ball with the right shoulder. Thx a lot!! Great stuff 👍
Hey Brendon, love your channel! I think you are being a great guinea pig for some really great golf instructors! You've got the cream of the crop in Bobby Lopez and Monte Scheinblum. It's impressive how fast they are at nailing your flaws (overswing and sway, like so many amateurs!) and suggesting remedies. They are awesome. I love it, it's like having a front row seat in an operating theater. I'd be willing to bet your swing will get well soon.
Hi Brendan. Thanks for sharing the Bobby Lopez analysis of your swing. Very informative as I have similar issues. My favourite coaching videos are from Dan Whittaker, here in England. Maybe a Skype interview with him would be good. Play well in the tournament and enjoy.
Hi again Brendon really interesting video, big shoutout to Andrew, congrats!! Bobby Lopez is a great guy, knows his stuff and also is tremendous fun ! My own recent journey (12 months) from 2 to scratch also meant me having to address a swing issue, hard work, but it can be done, good luck. Feel that you would come on very quickly if you could look at and change how the right arm travels back up to the top. In exactly how with the body turn the right forearm naturally rotates a little then folds up with the elbow then both pointing down to the ground and also being in line with the right hip pants front pocket (looked at from dtl). Which then gets you in the arms at the top (away from the head a little - with width and in front of the chest more) position Bobby is talking about at the top. So that right arm doesn't move to the top as it is doing currently in the swing which results in a bit of a flying right elbow with the elbow also outside of the right hip (looked at from dtl) Looking forward to seeing the BL lesson video, should be good ! Think the way you are looking at and tackling the journey to get better is a very well thought out one, good luck with it all :)
Hey B, great channel, love the stuff you've put up with Monte and Tony. Shortening my swing has been a BIG challenge which I've conquered with a swing focus: keep the hands in front of the sternum. Of course feel is not real so my hands feel like they're barely above my waist but on video, perfect length and no more wrapping the club around the top. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Good luck, keep up the great work!!!!
I've been practicing the 2 o'clock drill in the living room relentlessly since watching synching your swing (great vid btw :) ). The feel is slowly creeping up on me, still feels like way to much arms to early though. As far as your top of backswing position goes, i think the still on 4.55 says it all. the guy on the right has his right elbow tucked in and in synch with his shoulder turn. From that position it is almost impossible (for me at least) to over rotate the arms at the top. It feels like a natural brace from going to far. Your elbow is much more flying freely, allowing your right shoulder to rotate further, even after completing the turn of the shoulders around the spine. Some of the commenters before me referred to Dan Whittaker, he is a great teacher promoting a tucked right elbow. The teacher that made it click for me the most though as getting to stop over rotating my arms going back is Jim Waldron. I don't like everything he teaches, but his videos on the arm swing illusion really helped me with this issue. When I realized how little my right arm (well... left arm since i'm a lefty) has to move to get in the proper position at the top, i stopped over rotating almost instantly. Good luck with your swing and keep posting these great vids Brendon!
This is a great series. Even though you're a pretty good golfer, you are pretty good mainly because of your athleticism--not so much your swing. You know that, and you know that if your short game is solid you could do better. However, this is not your goal. Your goal is to have a swing that Bobby would have to really pick at to find faults etc...a swing that lacks a major fault. It appears you have basically one major fault--perhaps other smaller ones. 99% of us have a major fault, or several of them. There are not many videos/channels/lessons being posted by someone that reveals his own faults and is not basically a professional. Yet, you have a pretty good swing. This adds value to the video--uniqueness. Thank you for posting!
Brendan, Really admire your passion in pursuit of a better golf. Awesome energy and personality in your videos. We have traveled similar paths in getting the best information from informed sources. Have found more meaning and satisfaction following those grounded in the science of the swing. Teachers like Tyler Ferrell and Golf Smart Academy have opened my mind. That would be a killer interview. Keep up the great work.
Great info! I feel like I can strike the ball with the best of them, but don't have time to practice so have horrible touch around the greens that add the strokes to my rounds. That and poor course management as I tend to use weekend rounds more for practice then trying to focus on scoring. Something I noticed about your swing as I used to do the same thing that I don't believe was mentioned is that the arms tend to get long and behind when you just turn the shoulders to get the club to the top. There's apparently an element of elevation where you actually lift your arms while turning the shoulders which automatically shortens the backswing, compacts the swing and keeps the arms in front of your body coming down. So you turn the shoulders slightly for the takeaway and after the takeaway you start lifting the arms vertical while continuing to turn the shoulders. This also gets that lead arm across the chest at the top. Took a long time to learn that so I'd recommend giving it a try based on your comments. I noticed a lot more power and consistency once I figured that out.
Good luck! Relax and swing easy. I agree with you completely about getting to the next level. I know you're trying a lot of stuff and different coaches for our entertainment value, but I feel like you should go small and really focus on one or two things until you've got it down before moving on to the next thing. My crappy advice isn't worth much, but I'm thinking you should focus on two things now: shortening your backswing, and getting your right elbow in front. Monte and Bobby Lopez are telling you the same thing. Get your arms in front of your body. Get those down before you move on.
he is using the golf swing cliches that Monte doesn't seem to like but he essentially telling him the same thing: shorten the backswing and swing more with the arms.
Although, doesn't the initial drive to "pull the chain" lead to steepness which is something Brendon is really trying to stop, ie his tie-down drill (pipe cleaner, or whatever it is?)?
I would like to see an interview with Michael Hebron. I think to often the fundamentals of a golf swing like grip, posture, alignment, stance and feet pressure are over looked in the setup and could be causing a lot of swing fault issues. I would like to see videos on getting into the fundamentals perfectly every time.
I have been trying to shorten my swing for years or at least shorten it when u take my picture. I watched a video by Rick shiels/ Dan Whittaker that changed my swing forever. The key FOR ME has been my right elbow not drifting off my body. Look at the swings of boo and Sergio. Their right elbow is tucked in tight to their chest.
What pro's have said about their swing thoughts often sound contradictory. What Nicklaus said about getting the club to the ball "before his shirt buttons" would seem to suggest a pulling down hard with the hands from the top. Nicklaus also said the start of the downswing was a "gravity move" which would suggest he was in no hurry to get the hands down.
Brendon, saw your swing again. What about that "flying right elbow"? Got the same thing goin on and changed it. Now I try to keep it more behind the body pointed straight down and not so much outside. Helps for me to bow the wrist on top, lay and shallow the club and work the elbow inside. Maybe thats another part of the next step? Some pro trainers say the flying high elbow doesnt make any problems but in my changes it helped me to get the driver straighter together with the 2 o clock drill. What are your thoughts about this?
Different teachers use different swing thoughts to get at the same desired outcome. I think Monte didn't like the "ring the bell... pull down on the chain" swing thought because if "down" is taken too literally it makes you too narrow and also because it can lead to "dragging an angle" into the hitting area (leading to shanks). In one of Monty's videos he says to swing with the feeling of getting your lead upper arm "off your chest". That produces the same result of getting the arms going early in the downswing. (So does the "No turn cast drill").
Hey Brendon, another great video. ive watch almost all your videos, and can tell you have good athleticism and speed. i struggle pretty much with the same issues as you, but i was watching some videos from Shawn Clement and it occurred to me that i was setting up my shoulders too square to the target line-> check out - "How to Use the Lead Hand in the Golf Swing - Shawn Clement's Wisdom in Golf". maybe that will help with you pulling with your left side and help keep your chest from opening up too much. his drills really help with keeping head behind the ball prior to impact which i know monte, dana and bobby advocate. good luck in your tourney!
To ring or not to ring the bell, that is the question. LOL Playing a round with very good amateurs/college players/Tour pros is always welcome. And if they're up to it you could have a little session on the range where they talk about their swing (a little WITB never hurts :) Enjoy your fancy schmanzy tournament ;-)
I've probably lead with my chest and shoulders my entire golfing life and even recently purchased a video from a well known instructor that says the sequence is body, arms, then club. I've been stuck in the low 80's for 20 years with an occasional 77/78. Monte hates ringing the bell pull down move and says that's been his major fault. Now Lopez shows how you must keep your back facing away from the target while getting the arms down first like ringing a heavy chain. Just shoot me now and I'll be your D player in the once a year scramble!! Unbelievable how much the golf teaching profession continues to daze and confuse!
Golf is a sport, Dont think too much. Hands connected with the club then use hand. Tennis baseball they are all swing as a cycle. Would like to see you have more fun on golf. Btw good channel, I very enjoyed it
Problem starts at address. Butt is hanging way behind the heels. Almost always gonna early extend from there to find balance points on the balls of the feet. Perks sets up with his butt tucked under him which means he can actually correctly 'gain posture' on the way down. Set up with butt back and weight on the heels almost guarantees jumping early coming down.
Every golf teacher will show you swings of players whose downswing matches their teaching theory. But that downswing method may not be the method you use. And it is the downswing method that will control your body movement, your body motion will be a CONSEQUENCE of your downswing method. There are 5 downswing methods: 1) Bobby Lopez teaches the "pull down on the club handle" method of downswing. "Pull down" is a very good method, many pros and many of the greatest players ever, use this method. (Nicklaus, Garcia, Els, Rory, Oosthuizen, Geiberger) I don't think this is your downswing method, and I don't think you'll be comfortable trying it. 2) "Throwing the club through the ball" is a very smooth downswing method, easy to teach, produces a very relaxed body and hand motion. (Mike Austin, Paul Goydos) 3) "Flailing" is where the hands are very quiet, wide arc, and clubhead speed is produced by rotating the torso and letting the quiet hands lag and catch up. You will recognize a flailer because their hips nearly face the target at impact. 4) The rarest is the "backhander" (Trevino, Montgomery), where the golfer focuses on hitting the ball with the backhand of his lead hand, much like a backhand in tennis. You lose a little distance, but it is very accurate. 5) I think "baseball hit" is your natural downswing method (Couples, Kenny Perry, Bubba Watson, most long drive competitors). I suspect you have decent baseball swing, and are a pull hitter, which is why your natural drive is a fade. There are many great golfers who get their hands behind themselves on the backswing (Hogan), learn from them instead of trying to change your natural downswing position. The reason you jump sometimes at impact is because, since you are a "baseball hitter", you will be squaring up the clubhead to impact while your chest is still mostly facing the ball. And at impact your arms are fully extended. But at ADDRESS your chest is also facing the ball and your arms are hanging, so in order to then extend your arms at impact, you have to jump on your toes (Bubba) to create the extra space between your hands and the ball, otherwise your clubhead would pass 6 inches outside of the ball. To minimize the jump, stand a few inches further from the ball.
Try Allen Miller in Buffalo NY, Dave Pelz said he was the 2nd straightest hitter in in tour history , which he played for 15 years. His wife Cindy Miller also is a highly awarded teacher. Allenmillergolf.com
I honestly think you need to stick with fundamental and foundation instead of working on different parts of the swing. Work with sequence of winding up and unwinding. You always mention you're sliding. But I see the main thing is that your legs are not strong enough to lead the sequence. Wind in sequence and unwind in sequence. It's always the case.... At your stage, it's not really about your backswing is too long.....
You are not being too technical. The golf swing by its nature is a very technical animal. i hate when guys will tell you to just swing. But if you you see how they swing the club, obviously they follow there own advise.. Technically flawed!
BE BETTER GOLF I like Bobby’s tip. I have the same flaw. I lead with the left shoulder and muscles in the upper left back firing as my first downswing move. The opening of our shoulders early on the downswing in my view is akin to not making a full shoulder turn on the backswing ie fake shoulder turn. See the first photo when you drop your arms. I think we need to tilt away from the target and focus on our right shoulder muscles so we no longer react to our left side and then we can swing from under with the upper left arm connecting to the side of the rib cage. I love Bobby’s approach. Simple.
Brendan, I may have had the biggest breakthrough in the last three years or so thanks to Bobby's recommendation to you around keeping your back to the target and pulling down (aka 2 o'clock drill). Good stuff, Brendon. Cannot wait for the Bobby videos. I love that crazy cuban, lol.
good luck in the tournament

+100 You nailed it man.
"Pull the chain, ring the bell..." ...../kerplunk, the sound of Monte hitting the floor after an aneurism! 😜
he is using the golf swing cliches that Monte doesn't seem to like but he essentially telling him the same thing: shorten the backswing and swing more with the arms.
I know, I was being facetious!
Although, doesn't the initial drive to "pull the chain" lead to steepness which is something Brendon is really trying to stop, ie his tie-down drill (pipe cleaner, or whatever it is?)?
Yep --- as soon as he said pull the chain and ring the bell I stopped the video. Brandon will be doing a video soon on holding lag I am sure.
watch the video. its about starting the sequence with the arms rather than the hips. Its not about lag at all.
If i was to vote for someone to interview it would be mike malaska his swing model is so different from everything else out there
Congrats and good luck! Stay safe, assume you saw those riots on TV last night.
I would like to see an interview with Michael Hebron. Come to Lexington and hit up Grover at the High Performance Golf Academy. We'll get together for a round or two as well.
It seems like Gankas's swing thoughts are very effective at minimizing the hip slide. Anyway, what's that 2 o'clock drill?

Bernd Dreilich not really something I'm worried about.
Ok! Anyway congrats to your 1st place in that tournament! Great! :-)
good stuff....

Bobby,do you have a partner in Myrtle Beach ? Thanks John.
does that mean using your arms more instead of body rotation?
+Dave Oshea absolutely
Wouldnt it be the opposite. Less overswing must mean less arms. Loved the analysis amd fooey on the skinny toosh guy.
More arms on the downswing
Great teacher from Canada Shawn Clement! please check him out! good luck in your tournament
Bobby is awesome but needs some serious compression on his mic for when he laughs! Ha ha #earsbleedingnow
looks like bredons right knee works out to the ball, pros right knee works to target.
How much does it cost to get bobby to analyse the swing ? via email
Nicholas Hall $0.00 for the first one
might have to take him up on that offer
sergios swing looked crazy weird there haha
looking in a mirror at my swing too.

if sergio garcia would have that feeling "ringing the bell" he wouldnt be so flat in the downswing. never ever.
Sergio's main thought in his swing IS to ring the bell...look it up.

I think we need to tilt away from the target and focus on our right shoulder muscles so we no longer react to our left side and then we can swing from under with the upper left arm connecting to the side of the rib cage. I love Bobby’s approach. Simple.
sry, i dont agree with this guy. your arms shouldnt move down in transition - the worst thing is "ringing the bell"
Works for Sergio...
