Owning my dobie taught me so much of what a tense and anxious person I was even when I thought I was being calm! I had to really rewire everything because my dobie was picking up on every little tense up haha But through constant work with my trainer at Petco I learned to remain calm no matter what! Living in the city we have all types of people but I love how he remains vigilant but no longer barks at them! Recently we had to pass someone with a bat and i did my best to just keep moving lol and I love how my dobie kept his eyes on this man, but didn’t bark he was just like I SEE you, but we’re passing through haha! They are definitely protective, but you do have to put in some work to make sure they know when not to react! At 11mths we’ve come a long way! But I have to stress the training and exposure! Also, my puppy was CRAZY and not calm at first, but at 6mths he got used to the routine and our chaotic mutlipet house! So if you’re in the first stages hang in there! He’s now a total couch potato and a big softie!
So great to hear how anxiety changed your experience with owning a Doberman, Jenny! It's wonderful that you have been able to work through that so that you don't have an anxious dog as well. He certainly is a fast owner and relies on you for his cues about how to react in every situation!

I've always had people tell me my Dobes were too laid back. Living here in south Florida, too, I can also attest to us having panthers. Funny that Kleo didn't look too laid back when she treed a panther and kept it there until Animal Wildlife came out. Gotta love having a Dobe.

I agree with everything in this video I’ve had three Dobermans in and you have to teach him manners and be on top of it the entire life of the Doberman I love being trained and they will listen to you if you give commands daily. Dobermans are the best breed have ever seen in my life.

Also teach your dog the word relax. Give the dog a massage and brush and repeat the word relax. Do this everyday. If you do get into a situation that’s difficult you can them give your dog a pat and tell it to relax and it will then you can gain control. It can be very beneficial. I had a rescue Doberman and I’m sure he had PTSD and this helped him through it.
Fine goal, "Relax!", but how do you show the dog what this means, or just what to do?
@@dallemon15 many dogs find brushing and massage relaxing. Repeating the word relax teaches them to associate the word with their state.

Using and training "relax" as a command makes sense. There are definitely situations where that would be beneficial!
When my Dobbie Josie starts getting too hyper while playing, I give her the Gentle command. She's normally already gentle, NEVER putting her mouth on skin (only near it to lick it), but if her overplayfulness makes her pinch skin (no blood), I say Ow!

Potty training is the only issue I am having with my 70 day puppy
I adopted a 1 1/2 year old and the previous owner did not do any of this. I’ve had her for about a month and I’ve been doing all of this and being active with her. I’m hoping she will eventually get the idea as well.

I have owned, raised until my body is falling down from age now. Made mistakes try to learn and enjoy them still. The breed is simply amazing, they do read your response and inner functions of not being calm so well. I try constantly to own one till the end of my life, valuable video!

Hi John! I’m a future Doberman mom owner, but I have a question for advice that I’m hoping you could provide some help with.
I’m currently a nurse who lives on my own, working 3-4 12 hour shifts a week. I’m worried if I bring the puppy home I wouldn’t do him any justice and will create an unstable environment and he’ll develop bad habits. I’ve looked into Rover for the shifts I’m away, but do you believe I should wait on bringing a puppy home until my life is more stable?
Of course I would love to bring him home, but I don’t want to do him or the Doberman breed a disservice.
Hi! I’ve read on Reddit many owners leave their dogs at home while they work 10 hours and come home and take them out for a very long walk in the evening and are fine. The puppy stage might be a toughie but nothing you can’t handle!!

I’ve been owned by Dobermans for over 50 years. Even though previously I got my dobes from high quality breeders, I adopted my current one when he was 8 months old. It was so nice to not have to deal with potty training and puppy destructiveness. And at the age of 2 now, he’s doing great with agility, obedience and scent work. So I don’t feel like I sacrificed by not getting a puppy from a reputable breeder. This guy is as amazing as my high quality working dobes. I’ve such a great experience that I hope to get an older puppy from a rescue whenever I bring my next dobe home.
Great question, Jahzlyn! Doberman puppies will have to go out to pee every hour for how many months old they are (up to 6 months). So, for example, your 4 month old puppy will physically be able to hold his bladder for 4 hours. Get a cat 🐈 😻. I work 3 ,12hrs shifts. I'd feel guilty leaving a dog for 12hrs, it sooo wrong . At least have the dog half day doggie day care with other dog. Alot of those places are great good socialization for a dog 🐕, some places will pick up your pet and yes drive them back home 🐶 !
Individual dogs' personalities can vary, even within a breed. There was an adult Doberman at a dog park, many years ago, who was very outwardly friendly with everyone.
Neutering/spaying your Doberman is essential if you won’t be breeding them. It has so many benefits and there are zero reasons not to do it. To me, someone who has had 18 Dobermans (that includes a litter of 12☺️), I can absolutely substantiate the fact that they are emotionally tied to their humans. My Dobes knew when I was upset and would come over to comfort me, usually by sitting in my lap. Haha! Because, as any Dobie person knows, they think they weigh 8 pounds. The best breed in the world, bar none!!🐾❤️🐾
What age was your doberman when you had it neutered or spayed?
Omg that’s a lot of Dobermans lol. I’m actually having a problem maybe you can help me out cuz you have so much experience. I have an 8 yr old Doberman and me and my husband have a baby on the way but we’ve had this trainer that lately I just think is getting too military based and very harsh with the prong collar. I want a family orientated dog but also we want him obedient. What do u recommend
People say that spaying the girls make them pee in their sleep which I'm scared of and other issues like uti

My red Dobes, Red Zeppelin and Zoso, are couch potatoes. That's just the way I like it. When we were searching for a breeder, was telling her about my couch potato Dobe and she laughed and said, yeah, like there is such a thing. Needless to say, we didn't pick that breeder. They do get a walk daily or at least 5 times a week and we have a large fenced in yard (not the same as going different places) but in the house, it's time to settle. When we picked up Zeppelin, the breeder handed him to me belly up, like you would hold a baby. He never moved. Even my vet was a bit worried at first. Now, Zepp is my vet's favorite Dobe - bomb proof. On a scale of 1-10, vet says he's an 11. Our first visit after we picked him up from the breeder was McGinley's, our local pub. He fell asleep on the bar stool. Such a good boy - I just love him. Makes me cry still to this day. He'll be 6 in December. Zoso is his full brother, just a different litter, not quite as confident - just graduated Intro to Nose Work and will be starting Intro to Odor in October. Joining your local dog club helps continue training usually at more reasonable prices and most clubs, once you're a member, you get to use the facility for free or possibly a small fee. Zepp and Zoso sound like the perfect companions for your family! It speaks volumes that the vet says that (you know how many animals they see a day!) and that he fell asleep on the bar stool. Haha. So glad you guys have each other to do life with!

Great question! You have to teach yourself to be calm as well and model the behaviors you want your Doberman to exhibit.
I rehomed a retired Showdog from the Breeder that I bought my late Doberman (as a puppy). My new Dobie girl was 5 yrs old at the time.
They never let her be a puppy and play with dog toys. I'm trying to teach her. She was crated and kept in a kennel most of the time. Even fed in her crate. Horrific! They did a bark softening in 2019. Her vocal chords grew back and she whines funny. Her bark is not normal and she howls loud like a hound dog.
Now she is completely spoiled. She sleeps with me in bed, sits next to me on the couch and follows me everywhere. . Evi is so affectionate, loving and protective. Best thing is that she is related to my late Duchess.. Evi's Great Great Grandfather was my Duchess's Father. How can I get her to play with her toys?

Our 20 week old boy is so high energy it almost brings me to tears with frustration. No amount of play time, walking downtown, etc. calms him down and now he’s becoming defiant along with it. I only have met calm Dobermans though, so I’m hopeful he calms down with age.
I’m on the same boat. On top of that he confuses discipline with play time and is biting when he doesn’t like what he’s being told. Help!
Mine is turning 1 years old next month and he is definitely starting to show more signs of maturity. He has stopped eating my furniture and actually gets tired after play time! It can be a tough journey but the patience has paid off and you will have extremely focused and valuable companion in the long run

There’s no need to neuter male dogs, male dogs 🐕 don’t have a heat cycle & there to many benefits to list here look them up , I have raise Standard & Giant Schnauzers, Shepherds & Rat Terriers never clips my males and now I’m getting ready for Dobermans for 2023
In Europe they do not spay or neuter. They think we are barbarians here in the U. S.
Lot of health benefits to not neuter. Especially before 2 years of age.

Milo, 98 lb European Line intact male, actually attacked our fireworks at New Year. No fear. They were loud and disturbing the peace in our back yard. He just went for them. We had to take him in for his safety !
Our puppy is now almost 2 weeks with us. We do something every single day. Today we went for a coffee outside. Yesterday we went to a shop, we also went to some kind of home depo. Tomorrow we are going to the water. So we do something different every day for like 30 minutes. Exposure is key, but of course in a good, safe and short time way. And our puppy does not care about anything. He lay in my lap during coffee outside and also fell a sleep. Yard work, firework training, vacuüming, he does not mind at all. He is such a good puppy.
Was wondering if u had any suggestions for ear posting. When I got cerberus the breeder had just cropped his ears, so after we got his stitches removed he was already able to pullout the posting tampons, sticks, etc. Trying to avoid the cone around his neck thing. He turned 1 Yr in July.
Most Dobermans are done posting their ears 8-12 months in. The method used on Arlo is commonly referred to as the "zip-tie method" of ear posting since it relies on heavy plastic zip ties in the ear canal acting as the posts (along with some medical surgical glue called Torbot) to keep the ears stretched and sticking up. Although John has not made a video on this method (yet), you can Google "zip tie method of ear posting" or something similar and you'll probably see everything you need to know! It is important to talk to your vet and ask what method they recommend for your specific situation. Hopefully this helps!

I may have misunderstood but I’ve had so many people tell me not to have my puppy around other dogs until he is fully vaccinated. In the video I think she said the importance of socializing between 8-12 weeks. What did I miss?
Socializing doesn’t need other dogs. It can be just like she said-taking it through school carpool line, running errands, watching people do yard work and hearing lots of sounds and sights. I’d take my pup out with me, but she’d ride in the cart while she was tiny, or get carried around. She came to family gatherings and large group youth activities for my kids at church. But she never met another dog aside from my Nextdoor neighbor’s until she was fully vaccinated.
I know from raising two different Dobermans that they need a calm owner.
One has a lot of energy and nervous from time to time. The other calm cool and collected yet alert when needed.

My 8 mo rescue is chill but not crate trained fully or house broke. Rescue that was locked in house while young kids ran around.
Crate training in HOA sucks it’s hard to calm. Dogtv is calming but it’s not widely available. I take him everywhere he’s chill but no dog likes being behind bars all of a sudden.
I expose him and put toys. Shut the door not lock it. Ughh it’s frustrating.
Caveat! not for the faint of heart or those not 100% invested.
These dogs require a dedicated training regime, love, reassurance and routine.
Minus proper education and exercise they can become nightmares. They will destroy your home and become nervous wrecks.
Only get a Doberman, if you have the requisite time to invest, have prior knowledge of training dogs a large area of land for them to roam and be free (or the commitment to exercising/ play > 2 hours per day.)
These are the most loving, dedicated dogs out there. But, you only get out, what you are prepared to invest.
Failure to engage with them properly will have dire consequences and it will be your fault.
If you’re having second thoughts about living up to these requirements, then I’d humbly suggest you opt for a more laid back, equally loving and protective dog.
Choose a dog that suits your lifestyle. Don’t expect a dog to automatically fit into yours.
He's overweight. My 110-pound boy eats two cups in the am, and another two in the evening. You should see his ribs ... not starving ribs, but just a tad.
The best way to raise a calm Doberman is to be a calm Doberman owner. They are so attuned to our energy and mirror whatever we are feeling.

Kaiser gets overzealous about almost everything. He's probably the only large dog I've ever known that pees when he's excited.
In addition we had a huge setback when he was a puppy, he got giardia on and off for months, and we couldn't really let him do anything. Trying to make up for this is... kind of a task lol
Kaiser isn't the only Dobie that pees when excited. My Dante, just turned 3 and he STILL PEES. kinda drives me crazy. Everyone says, he'll grow out of it. Not yet he hasn't. He just gets so excited over people. He loves them and kids. Being a male I have to warn people watch you feet he might tinkle on them. Lol

Have you tried any training with Dante...? We've been working with Kaiser on it for some time, and it's gotten a little better. It's less about potty training and more about not letting people approach or actively ignoring him unless he's visibly calm and in a sitting or down position. I've also taken to introducing people outside in grassy areas and not on walkways, just in case he messes up so the house doesn't smell like pee lol
@@fructosecornsyrup5759 hahaha 🤣 I've done exactly all of the things you mentioned. Yes calmness is the key. And always I let him meet people outside. I have to say he has gotten better. He used to pee as soon as my husband came in from work, but he's stopped that now. He's getting there. People at Home Depot always want to pet Dante, but I warn them. You might get pee on your shoes, but they don't care. 🤣 True dog lovers.
Apollo looks like he has the same exact demeanor as my Rottweiler. Unfortunately, my dobie wasn't able to have the same puppy experiences as my rott, but I swear, he does indeed copy after me with a lot of things. Im single and dont gravitate towards young kids, is it weird my dobie also is like uhhh nah man im good on that? XD

Good day, sir! I'm about to get a 6 month old Doberman puppy. Im still deciding whether to get a male or a female pup. My main concern is, I have two dogs already on our home.. A female mutt and a male pitbull, both 3 years old. I want them to learn to live together freely. My current dogs aren't specifically territorial nor aggressive, but they are really playful. Can you provide some tips for situations like this? It would help a lot!

I have a 7 month old 3/4 Doberman puppy and not sure how much of his bad behavior is just because he's young versus being a brat. Whenever I am out of sight he destroys things. He doesn't want to pay attention, follow commands, heel, etc. I have 3 adult dogs he is with all the time, lots of toys and bones, big yard. I can't take him to work with me because he is so hyper and disobedient. I have never had such a hard time training a dog but this is my first one to raise from 8 weeks old. I'm not sure how strict or militant to be with him. One place I read that you can't expect much from them until at least 9 months old but I see others with much more well behaved puppies. Help!

How do you feel about a prong collar? Do you use one? We have a trainer for our dog but we actually have a baby on the way and I think that our trainer is just a little too harsh with the prong collar. Can you please do a video or respond back to my question. I want a family orientated doberman. Not a military dog.
I use a prong collar on my big 85 pound strong male dobe. I'm 70 years old so I can't take the chance that he will pull and knock me down. That being said, you must use them the proper way. Just a very slight pop on the leash. No way do you yank hard on that collar. You should be able to find some videos on the proper way to use a prong collar. I only use it for my safety.
Dobermans are very willing-to-please dogs and want to make their owners happy, for this reason, it is a bit concerning that your trainer is using a prong collar. Lots of treats and positive reinforcement are, 99% of the time, going to work wonders. Cooper and Arlo have never had a prong collar.
How do you help a rescued 9 month old male Doberman stop being scared of my son who has never even done anything to him. I am his fourth home. I had him neutered and put him in basic training classes. We are walking him every day and trying to wear him out. He's hyper and strong willed. Thank you for your help.

The television is a problem raising well behaved dogs. If you cut out the noise during upbringing, it makes a calmer animal.

Heart murmurs are generally the result of an underlying condition, so depending on treatment options (which might be something you'd be fighting for life), you could tell the breeder they need to cover any and all medical bills associated with the murmur or exchange the puppy for another.

I love this video! My family and I recently adopted a Doberman and he is about a year and half. We have had him for about a week and he has extreme anxiety he became very attached to my husband and has gradually started warming up to me I can pet him and rub him but my son can’t get near my husband without him snapping on him and today when I kissed my husband he snapped at me is there anything that can help? We give lots love and affection and attention and lots of exercise we love him so much and just want him to love all of us. Any help will be so appreciated!

Don't make the mistake I did with my Doberman. Socialization does not mean meeting other dogs. I thought it did and took him to the dog park. Now he is very dog reactive. Big mistake on my part!!

Is it seeing different Dobermans and different owners that you just aren't into or is there another style change or something you don't like as much? Please! Brown bears in Florida?? Unless it escaped from a sanctuary or zoo, there’s no way that kind of bear is native to Florida. These are animals that are found in Alaska and Canada. Yes, there are some grizzlies in Montana’s and other northern (lower 48) states but this doesn’t look like a grizzly and those aren’t found in Florida either. Black bears, sure, there’s plenty of those. Black bears come in all conceivable colors from blond to cinnamon to brown, but predominantly black (hence the name). But this is not a black bear!!
Just because footage of a bear was used for the video doesn't mean it was THAT bear she saw in Florida.

Joe is right. The stock video used in this video of the bear was that of a brown/grizzly bear which is not located in Florida. The Bears that we have are black bears.
